Manhunt is a translation of Ushnaraashi - Karappurathinte Ithihasam which received the 2018 Vayalar Ramavarma Literary Prize.

A book that unravels the story of the punnapra vayalar revolution. It gives the reader a unique feeling of being with the revolutionaries of the time and be a part of their struggles. It fulfills the responsibility of awakening the current generation to the yesteryear struggles of great humanitarians who sacrificed their lives for a future that was more humane, and which they could never enjoy. ഇതിഹാസതുല്യമായ പുന്നപ്ര-വയലാർ വിപ്ലവത്തിന്റെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ അഖ്യാനമാണിത്. ചരിത്രത്തിനൊപ്പം  സമകാലിക രാഷ്ട്രീയവും ചേർത്തുള്ള എഴുത്താണ് അവലംബിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.
വേലയെടുത്താൽ കൂലിക്കു പകരം ജന്മിയുടെ അടിയും ഔദാര്യവും വാങ്ങി ജീവിച്ച ജനങ്ങൾ ഒരുനാൾ ചിന്തിക്കുവാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അവരിലേക്ക്‌ അവകാശബോധത്തിന്റെ അറിവുകൾ പകർന്നേകി ഒരു പ്രസ്ഥാനം ഉയർന്നു വന്നു. ജന്മിത്വത്തിനെതിരെ പോരാടാൻ കരുത്തും മനസാന്നിധ്യവുമേകി കീഴാളജീവിതങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉയർന്നുവരാൻ കൈത്താങ്ങേകി  അവർക്കൊപ്പം മുന്നിൽ നിന്നു നയിച്ചത് കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ്‌ പ്രസ്ഥാനവും കരുതരായ സഖാക്കളുമായിരുന്നു.

തൊഴിലാളികൾക്കെതിരെ ജന്മികളും അവരുടെ ഗുണ്ടകളും അവക്കൊത്താശചെയ്ത് അമേരിക്കൻ മോഡൽ അധികാര മോഹം മനസ്സിൽ പേറി സി പി രാമസ്വാമി എന്ന ദിവാനും ദിവാന്റെ പോലീസും പട്ടാളവും ചേർന്ന് അക്രമം അഴിച്ച് വിട്ടു. തീ തുപ്പുന്ന തോക്കുകൾക്ക് മുന്നിൽ ചുവപ്പ് നാടകൾ കെട്ടിയ വാരിക്കുന്തങ്ങളേന്തി ചെറുത്തുനിൽക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ച ധീരന്മാരായ സഖാക്കൾ വെടിയുണ്ടകൾ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി രക്തസാക്ഷികളായി. അടിച്ചമർത്തപ്പെടുകയും  ആയിരങ്ങൾ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സമരമായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും അധികം താമസിക്കാതെ അധികാരികൾക്കു  അടിയറവു പറയേണ്ടി വന്നു.  പിന്നീട് തിരുവതാംകൂറിൽ പ്രസ്ഥാനം വളരുക മാത്രമല്ല പടർന്നു പന്തലിക്കുകയുമുണ്ടായി.വായനയിൽ മുഴുകിയപ്പോൾ അന്നത്തെ ആ കാലത്തേക്ക് തിരികെപോകാനും നിസ്വാർത്ഥരായ ആ സഖാകന്മാരോടൊപ്പം വാരികുന്തവുമെന്തി സി പി യുടെ പട്ടാളത്തിനെതിരെ പോരാടുവാൻ തോന്നിപ്പോയി.

സഖാവിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം എന്തായിരുന്നു എന്ന് ഇതിലൂടെ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഒരുപക്ഷെ പാമ്പ് കടിയേറ്റ് മരണപെട്ടില്ലാരുന്നേൽ, കൃഷ്ണപിള്ള സഖാവ് കേരളത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ആവേണ്ടിയിരുന്നു.

സമര നായകൻ കുന്തക്കാരൻ പത്രോസെന്ന കരുത്തനായ കെ വി പത്രോസ്  പാർട്ടി സെക്രട്ടറിയിൽ നിന്ന് തരംതാഴ്ത്തപ്പെടുകയും പിന്നീട് പുറത്താക്കുകയുമുണ്ടായി.
ദിവാനെ കൊല്ലാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുകയും അതുവഴി സിപി തിരുവതാംകൂർ വിട്ടു പോകാനും കാരണമായ കെ സി എസ് മണിയുടെ അവസ്ഥയും മേല്പറഞ്ഞതിൽ നിന്നു വല്യ മാറ്റങ്ങൾ ഒന്നുമുണ്ടായിട്ടില്ല.
അനഘാശയൻ എന്ന കുട്ടിസഖാവ് മനസ്സിൽ ഒരു നൊമ്പരമായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു.

രാഷ്ട്രീയഭേദമന്യേ എല്ലാ മലയാളികളും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട പുസ്തകമെന്നു തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു നിർത്തുന്നു.

Manhunt is the much needed English translation of the Malayalam novel Ushnaraashi-Karappurathinte.
.
It is the emotional take that the author has chosen to bring this history to us in, that makes the story so much more real, convincing & impactful! The illustrations only add to the emotion the story carries.
It has a people's history touch to it, which is personally something I like to read. It is also unique in the sense that the story is of the present seeking its roots, its past, in search for answers. Read on to find out why yesterdays are important for our tomorrows.

സുഹൃത്തുക്കളിൽ ചിലരുടെ വായനാക്കുറിപ്പ് വായിച്ച് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഏറെ കാലമായി വായിക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു പുസ്തകമാണ് "ഉഷ്ണരാശി - കരപ്പുറത്തിൻ്റെ ഇതിഹാസം". ഐതിഹാസികമായ പുന്നപ്ര-വയലാർ സമരത്തിൻ്റെ ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ചരിത്രമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. ചരിത്രവും വർത്തമാനകാലവും ഭാവിയിലേക്കുള്ള പ്രതീക്ഷകളും ഒരു പോലെ ഇഴപിരിച്ചുള്ള വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു ആഖ്യാനശൈലിയാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ സ്വീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. പേരുപോലെ തന്നെ, ഒരു നാടിൻ്റെ, നമ്മുടെ കേരളരൂപീകരണത്തിൽ നിർണായകമായ പങ്കു വഹിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള പുന്നപ്ര വയലാർ സമരത്തിൻ്റെ ജ്വലിക്കുന്ന ഇതിഹാസമാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകമെന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാം.

കൽക്കത്തയിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന സഖാവായ സത്യദാസിൻ്റെ മകൾ അപരാജിത അച്ഛൻ്റെ ജന്മനാടിൻ്റെ ചരിത്രാന്വേഷണത്തിൻ്റെ ഭാഗമായി കേരളത്തിൽ വരുകയും ആ ചരിത്രമന്വേഷിച്ച് അതൊരു പുസ്തകരൂപത്തിൽ എഴുതുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് നോവലിൻ്റെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. അപരാജിതയുടെ കൂടെ വായനക്കാർ ഓരോരുത്തരും 1930 - കൾ മുതൽക്കുള്ള സമരങ്ങളുടെയും കിരാതമായ രാജ-ദിവാൻ ഭരണത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള നമ്മുടെ പൂർവികരുടെ ചെറുത്തുനിൽപുകളിലൂടെയും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ നോവലിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി സഖാക്കളായ പി.കൃഷ്ണപിള്ള, ഇ.എം.എസ്, വി.എസ്. അച്യുതാനന്ദൻ, ടി.വി. തോമസ്, കെ.വി. പത്രോസ്, എ.കെ. ഗോപാലൻ, സി.കെ. കുമാരപ്പണിക്കർ, കെ.സി.ജോർജ് തുടങ്ങിയവരും കടന്നുവരുന്നു.

കേരളരൂപീകരണസമയത്ത് ആദ്യ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് മന്ത്രിസഭ അധികാരമേറ്റപ്പോൾ ആ മന്ത്രിസഭയിലുണ്ടാകേണ്ടിയിരുന്ന, എന്നാൽ ഒന്നുമാവാൻ സാധിക്കാതെ പോയ പത്രോസിൻ്റെ അവസ്ഥ നമ്മെ നൊമ്പരപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതാണ്. ഇന്ത്യക്ക് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം ലഭിക്കുന്നതിൽ വലതുപക്ഷത്തോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പാർട്ടിയും സഖാക്കളും വഹിച്ച പങ്ക് വളരെ വലുതാണ്. എത്രയെത്ര സഖാക്കളും അതിനുവേണ്ടി ജീവൻ ത്യജിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നുള്ളതും നാമോരോരുത്തരും അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. കേരളീയരെന്ന നിലയിലും നാമോരോരുത്തരും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട, അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കേണ്ട ചരിത്രം തന്നെയാണ് പുന്നപ്ര വയലാർ സമരത്തിൻ്റേത്.

സഖാവ് സത്യദാസിന്റെ വേരുകൾ തേടി മകൾ അപരാജിതയുടെ യാത്രയും അതിനോട് കൂടി ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന ഐതിഹാസികമായ പുന്നപ്ര-വയലാർ സമര കാലഘട്ടവും ആണ് കെ.വി. മോഹൻകുമാർ ഉഷ്ണരാശി: കരപ്പുറത്തിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം എന്ന ഈ നോവലിലൂടെ പറയുന്നത്. ഒരു പക്ഷെ പുന്നപ്ര-വയലാർ സമരത്തെ ഇത്ര അടുത്തുനിന്ന് ഒരു കഥാഗതിയിലൂടെ നോക്കിക്കണ്ട വേറൊരു നോവൽ ഇല്ലെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. സർ സിപിയുടെ പട്ടാളത്തിനെതിരെ നീതിക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള കുരുക്ഷേത്രയുദ്ധം. ശത്രുപക്ഷം പ്രബലമാണ്. അനീതിയുടെ ആൾരൂപങ്ങൾ. ആയുധബലംകൊണ്ടും ശക്തരാണവർ. അത്തരത്തിൽ ആർത്തിരമ്പി ആഞ്ഞടിക്കുന്ന കടലിനുനേരെ മനക്കരുത്തും വിപ്ലവവീര്യവും ഇൻക്വിലാബ് വിളികളുമായി അലറിപ്പാഞ്ഞ ഒരു ജനത. കഥയിലുടനീളം വില്ലൻ സ്ഥാനത്ത് സർ സിപി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. നായകൻ തീർച്ചയായും കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് പ്രസ്ഥാനം തന്നെയാണ്. യാഥാർത്ഥങ്ങളായ ചരിത്രപുരുഷന്മാർക്കൊപ്പം തന്നെ മറക്കാനാവാത്ത കുറെ കാൽപ്പനിക കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ. ഈ നോവൽരൂപത്തിനു വേണ്ടി നടത്തിയ പഠനങ്ങൾ ഏറെയുണ്ടെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു. കാല്പനികതയും ചരിത്രവും വേർതിരിക്കാനാവാത്തവിധം ഇഴചേർത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. 2018ലെ വയലാർ അവാർഡും കേരളസാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡും അതിനു പിന്നാലെ മറ്റനേകം പുരസ്കാരങ്ങളും നേടിയ ഈ നോവൽ തീർച്ചയായും കേരളരാഷ്ട്രീയസാഹിത്യചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു നാഴികക്കല്ലാണ്.

Haven't read a such well researched novel in recent times. Ushnarashi is the story of the Punnapra Vayalar uprising against the Diwan CP by communists that happened on Oct 26-27 1946. It is also intertwined with a contemporary story of people getting attracted to Maoism. I was skeptical picking this up coz it was awarded the prestigious Vayalar award at the time when LDF govt was in power in Kerala. But the book justifies that. The amount of research and thinking that goes into such a book, which is written in an extremely non linear fashion, is tremendous. Hats off K V Mohan Kumar. A must read for all Malayalees to know the history of their State.

നിലവിലുള്ള നോവൽ ഭാവനസങ്കൽപ്പന്നങ്ങൾക്കപ്പുറത്ത് ഒരു കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്കുള്ള പലായനം ഒരു നോവലായി പരിണമിക്കുമ്പോഴുണ്ടാകുന്ന അനുവാചക കൗതുകം താളുകൾക്കൊപ്പം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ഒടുവിൽ സമൂഹതിന്റെ ഉച്ചനീചത്വങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ പ്രതികരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സഖാവായി ഓരോ വായനക്കാരനും സമരസപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന രീതിയാണ് ഉഷ്ണരാശി പിന്തുടരുന്നത് . പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് നമുക്ക് മുമ്പ് നമ്മുടെ നാടിനു വേണ്ടി ജീവൻ ത്യജിക്കാൻ തയ്യാറായ വിപ്ലവ സമര നായകന്മാർ ആരാധനാ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി ഉള്ളിലെവിടെയോ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നവോത്ഥന കാലഘട്ടത്തിനും അതിനുശേഷവും വന്ന പല കൃതികളിലും കേരള സമൂഹ രൂപീകണവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ തിരു ശേഷിപ്പുകൾ കണ്ടെത്താൻ കഴിയുമെങ്കിലും കെ വി മോഹൻ കുമാർ വരച്ചിടുന്ന കരപ്പുറത്തെ കഥ ഒരു ഇതിഹാസനോവലായി സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ആസ്വാദന പാരമ്യത വര്ണനകൾക്കപ്പുറമാണ്.
ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ആധിപത്യത്തിനെതിരെയുള്ള സമരങ്ങൾ അതിന്റെ അവസാന ഘട്ടത്തിൽ എത്തിനിൽക്കുമ്പോഴാണ കേരളത്തിൽ ഫ്യൂഡൽ പ്രഭുക്കൾക്കും ദിവാൻ ഭരണത്തിനുമൊക്കെയുള്ള കർഷക ശബ്ധങ്ങൾ ഉയരാൻ തുടങ്ങിയത്. അതിൽ നിരവധി പേരുടെ ജീവൻ ബലിയർപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഐതിഹാസ സമരങ്ങളായി അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയ സമരങ്ങളാണ് കരിവെള്ളൂർ, ഒഞ്ചിയം, പുന്നപ്ര വയലാർ തുടങ്ങിയവ. ‘ഉഷ്ണരാശി- കരപ്പുറത്തിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം’ എന്ന നോവലിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലം പുന്നപ്ര വയലാര്‍ സമരമാണ്. കരപ്പുറത്ത് ജനിച്ച് അരക്ഷിത ബാല്യത്തിന്റെ തീപിടിച്ച നാളുകളില്‍ അമ്മയില്‍ നിന്നു പുന്നപ്രവയലാര്‍ സമരചരിത്രം കെട്ടുവളര്ന്നത ഒരെഴുത്തുകാരന്‍ എന്ന നിലയ്ക്ക് ഇതെഴുതാതെ പോയാല്‍ ചരിത്രം എന്നെ കുറ്റക്കാരനെന്ന് വിളിക്കും’ എന്ന ആമുഖത്തോടെയാണ് മോഹന്‍ കുമാര്‍ നോവലിലേക്ക് വായനക്കാരെ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നത്.

മലയാളിയായ സഖാവ് സത്യദാസിന്റെ്യും ബംഗാളി ഏഴിത്തുകാരി സ്നേഹലത ചാറ്റര്ജി്യുടെയും മകള്‍ അപരാജിത അച്ഛന്‍ സത്യദാസിന്റെക മരണത്തിന് ശേഷം കൂട്ടുകാരി ദിശയോടൊപ്പം സ്വന്തം വേരുകള്‍ തേടി പുന്നപ്രയില്‍ എത്തുന്നതും ആ നാടിന്റെ സമരചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം ‘കരപ്പുറത്തിന്റെ ഇതിഹാസം’ എന്നപേരില്‍ എഴുതുന്നതുമാണ് എനോവലിന്റെ പ്രമേയം. സമരനായകന്മാരുടെ ഓരോ മുന്നേറ്റവും ഒന്നും ഒഴിവാക്കാതെ ഡയറി താളുകളിലെന്ന പോലെ പറഞ്ഞുപോകുമ്പോൾ വ്യക്തമാകുന്നത് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെയും അദ്വാനത്തിന്റേയും മാധുര്യമാണ് . അപരാജിതയ്ക്ക് അച്ഛൻ സമ്മാനിച്ച ബൊളീവിയൻ ഡയറിയുടെ താളുകൾ ഇടയ്ക്ക് എഴുത്തിനെ ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെയും ഓർമ്മകളിലേക്ക് കൂട്ടികൊണ്ട് പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. അവളുടെ മനസ്സിനെ കവർന്നെടുത്ത ആരാധനാ കഥാപാത്രം ചെഗുവേരയെപ്പോലെ നിരഞ്ജൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ ഒരു വിപ്ലവ കഥാപാത്രം അവളുടെ ഉള്ളിൽ കയറി കൂടുന്നുണ്ട് എഴുത്തിന്റെ വഴിയിൽ.

പട്ടിണിയും അടിമത്വവും തൊട്ടുകൂടായ്മയുമൊക്കെ അനുഭവിച്ച ഒരു ജനത ദിവാൻ ഭരണത്തിൽ മേലധികാരികളിൽ നിന്നും ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങേണ്ടിവന്ന ക്രൂരമായ പീഡനത്തിന്റെ വിവരണങ്ങൾ ഇതൊക്കെ സംഭവ്യമാണോ എന്ന് പുതുതലമുറയെ കൊണ്ട് ചിന്തിപ്പിച്ചാൽ അതിശയോക്തിയില്ല. കരപ്പുറത്തെ വിപ്ലവ നായകൻ വാസുദേവൻ മാഷ് പലപ്പോഴായി എഴുതിയ നോവൽ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ അപരാജിതയ്ക്ക് എഴുത്തിൽ പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട് . സഖാവ് കൃഷ്ണപ്പിള്ള, ഇ എം എസ്, എ കെ ജി, ടി വി തോമസ്, ആര്‍ സുഗതന്‍, പി കെ ചന്ദ്രാനന്ദന്‍, കെ വി പത്രോസ്, സൈമണ്‍ ആശാന്‍, വര്ഗ്ഗീപസ് വൈദ്യര്‍, സി കെ കുമാരപ്പണിക്കര്‍, അനഘാശയന്‍, രാഘവന്‍, അച്യുതാനന്ദൻ തുടങ്ങിയ കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റ് നേതാക്കളും പട്ടം താണുപ്പിള്ള ആര്‍ ശങ്കര്‍, സര്‍ സി പി, വേട്ടക്കല്‍ കോച്ച, അപ്ലോണ്‍ അറൌജ്, സത്യനേശന്‍ നാടാര്‍ (സിനിമ നടന്‍ സത്യന്‍) തുടങ്ങി അധികാര/ജന്മി വര്ഗ്ഗീവും ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവരും മണ്മനറഞ്ഞവരുമായി നിരവധി കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ നോവലിനെ പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യുന്നു .

കേരള ചരിത്രത്തിൽ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തികൊണ്ട് മൺമറഞ്ഞുപോയ ധീരയോദ്ധാക്കളുടെയും, പട്ടിണി പാവങ്ങളുടെയും , സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഉണ്മൂല മാറ്റത്തിന് നാന്ദികുറിച്ച സംഭവവികാസങ്ങളുടെയും, വ്യകതവും അതിലേറെ കൃത്യവുമായ വെളിപ്പടുത്തലുകലാണ് ഈ നോവൽ. പ്രത്യശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളെ മറന്നു കൊണ്ട് ജീവിക്കുന്ന ആധുനിക കമ്യൂണിസത്തിനു ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മപ്പെടുത്തലോടുകൂടിയ ഒരു പാഠമായി മാറാനും കെ വി മോഹൻ കുമാറിന്റെ ഈ നോവൽ ഇതിഹാസത്തിനു കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട് .

And the writer is convinced that “Every person has a mission in life. But most of the return without realising that. Few who realise that, reach the cross roads and get struck. At the end, life ends up as a quiz question asked to a fool!”

The Manhunt is a historically based fiction starts at the note of Aparajitha’s POV, Daughter of Comrade Sathyadas and her 4 friends. Interweaving the journey of writing her university research papers digging her roots that leads to the core of the uprising that happened in the Seashore villages of Punnapra & Vayalar has been told by eliminating the complexities in retelling the history with picturesque details of the involved scenarios. Like from how the leaders have gathered to fight (outlining the elaborated instances in 45 chapters) for their freedom from landlords & administrators to the final call of actual revolt had happened is what this story is all about.

This book is totally appealing and obsessive one since not only had it painted the portrayal of people movements with its latitude and longitudes from the Diwan system to colonial, the author has also sketched the sensitive modern age issues like mafias and environmental crisis which has to do with the current political conflicts at large. While outpouring the assaults of the suppressed and low caste people struggles, this book equally offered insights into the formation of Maoist in India.

Usually reading the historical based, the reader may find it hard to contemplate the events, but the author's poetic skills sufficed the same. Almost without one realising, the Characters of Disha, Mrinalda’s and Niranjan have renders the readers mind with the depths of the human bonds. I bet this book would shed its light widely among the Non-Malayali readers as well.

Towards end, the novel has turned into more of communist/maoist propaganda. Novelist even does the claim that India won its independence from British due to communist agitations. This may be quite good portrayal of Punnapra Valayar during that time.

Surprised to see even a book of average quality can win Vayalar award these days. Really the quality of Malayalam literature has come down so much these days.
