Alexandra Ascher isn't your usual private investigator. She lives on the fringes, making a living by doing odd jobs and aiding clients with problems that would raise eyebrows. Despite the unusual nature of her clients, as far as she knows she is simply a normal human.
On the eve of her 21st birthday, her apartment is completely trashed. Tracking down the perpetrators leads her into a growing web of mysteries. Turning 21 adds a fresh wave of complications and a reveals a dark heritage that she would never have seen coming. To make things worse, a new client brings even more layers into the mess.
Somehow, Alex has to find answers to all the chaos in her life and stay alive while doing it. Whatever happens, her life will never be the same again.
Note: This book contains scenes with explicit sex.
Based on all the amazing reviews this novel has I was expecting to adore this but it just didn't happen. I was almost an hour into the novel and the story was still just beginning. There was nothing interesting to hold my attention apart from her apartment being ransacked. It just wasn't enough for me. When she starts talking about how amazingly good looking and model-esk she is and how every guy that sees her wants her everything seemed to go down the gutter even faster for me. Overall, this book just wasn't for me and I'll be moving on from it!
The Halfblood's Hoard By Devin Hanson A half demon woman finds out this fact on the eve of her 21st birthday. Her mother died when she was born, and her father died when she was a child. Once she finds out, this new world offers new jobs, more dangers, and some very interesting characters. It is very interesting and entertaining, and I like the different paranormal creatures. It has some hot scenes, but the main character is a succubus, so it fits.
Like many "firsts" in a series, it throws you right into a world the author has in their head, however as the reader you are pretty clueless so it takes a few chapters to get used to, especially when said version of the supernatural is a new twist on things. (which gives this book its first star).
There are 3 types of beings in this book, beings made of light/dark, beings made of fire and beings made of clay. This translates to Angles/Demons (light), Djinn (fire), humans (clay/earth).
Demons are the fallen Angels from prior to when God abandoned earth. Said demons (who can posses humans by ejecting their soul) can procreate with humans creating half-bloods. Once said half-blood reaches maturity his/her sire/mother starts offering a deal of strength/power etc. Once the bargain is accepted the half-blood effectively becomes evil. Our MC is the daughter of Mahmet who in turn is one of the 7 daughters of Lilith (ie one of the Lilin). Of course she doesnt know this in the beginning.
Djinn in this book is like a catch all term for different types of sups. There are magic users, shifters etc. There also also a group of Djinn ( called the Red) who apparently are tasked with exterminating any half-bloods . Reason being that all half-bloods eventually succumb to the lure of power / strength so they proactively kill them on sight.
In this first book of the series our MC learns she is a half-blood. She was aware of the sups prior to this knowledge as she is a private investigator dealing in minor cases to do with the djinn. The book starts with her having been made homeless as something broke into her appartment and trashed it, like completely to the point of flattening spoons. She spends the night at a friends house who is also a private investigator and he introduces her to a client.
This was a great start to a new urban fantasy series! Alexandra isn’t your normal private investigator and makes ends meet with some weird and messy jobs, especially the one from her newest client. Turning twenty one has complicated her life and also reveals her heritage and the world she actually lives in. I really liked Alex’s spunky and crafty personality and that she was bisexual. Yes, this book has quite a bit of sex in it, but it actually fits the story and doesn’t feel like page fillers. The world that Devin has created is intriguing and well developed. I loved the idea of there being three type of beings- made from light and dark (angels and demons), made from fire (Djinn/ supernaturals), and ones made of clay (humans); also there are half-bloods that are created by demons and humans. This book was filled with suspense, twists and turns, and a lot of action! Jessica did another great job with this narration! She spoke at a steady pace, used distinguishable voices for every character, and really brought the main character to life. Her performance added to the action, steam, and suspense of the book! *I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This was a great read! And I cannot wait for more!
+ The series went a way I didn't expect + Grown ass MC who isn't 150% snark and sarcasm + A unique urban fantasy world (and with over 800 books read this is rare for me)
For a lot of people, a negative is sex. This book got it. I've read some of the paranormal romance books out there that is 80% just pure erotica and honestly it's too much for me. Several chapters describing one sex scene? It's too much for me. This is partly why I loved this book here, it has sex, and it isn't just the fade-to-black type either, it's descriptive alright. But it is at top a few pages, and not 10-20 as some books do. It wasn't as.. crude as some of the paranormal romance out there.
This was a grown ass MC who sometimes had grown ass sex, and as someone who is turning 30 next month I can relate to that. It also isn't just a pagefiller, there are story relevance here that I cannot get into because they're major spoilers.
I really loved the universe, I loved that I didn't instantly know what someone could do or their limitations by simply hearing their name. I mean... sure there are dozens if not hundreds of variations on how people write the fae, or werewolves or vampires, but most of it.. it's pretty cliche. Hey! I love urban fantasy, I ain't dissing it. It just gets.. familiar.
In this universe, it started all the way back when god created the world. First there was light, and then there was fire, and then there was humans made out of clay. Light. Fire. Earth. Angels. Djinn. Humans. From what I can tell most of the supernatural entities walking around earth in this book are djinn. Which meant everyone I met was new, unique, and did different things. Now, they had djinn types, and one djinn type was kind of like a werewolf so there are similarities here. But I don't know very much about the djinn lore, where it originated from (unlike fae lore which is hugely overdone) so when these djinn names got tossed around I had no clue what to expect and that was.. fucking exhilarating.
Also, minor spoiler, there was mention of vampires and even ghouls in the book. And in book 2 we even encounter one of them, and I was.. so surprised. because even that was twisted into something unique and refreshing.
Devin Hanson needs to write more books. Needs to write more female perspectives. I haven't tried his other series but I was SO disappointed when I saw it was a male MC as I usually prefer the female ones. Like for me to enjoy a male MC the books have to be top quality tier. And this halfblood legacy book 1 and 2 was so good that I will be trying out his male perspective books.
READ THIS! It's almost a must unless the small amount of erotica displayed is a huge turnoff (which I know is true for some urban fantasy fans)
There is a good book in there, but the execution is lacking. 2.5 stars
The premise of this novel is a familiar one to Urban Fantasy readers. A PI specializing in the supernatural gets a new case and investigates/ fights/ stumbles towards a climax at the end of the story. Wich is much as it happens here. Alex comes home only to discover that her apartment, and everything she owns is destroyed up to the last eating utensil. Now she has to find a place to sleep, find out who ruined her home and also do her regular job.....
In all this sound like an OK setup for a UF novel, but things go a bit wonky right from the start. The plot starts off with contorting itself to fit the narrative end-result and bit by bit throws out logic and likability. Alex is supposed to be a good investigator, with several years of experience, an orphan, have supernatural connections, be confident, competent.... and only just about to turn 21? Add moments of unwarranted jealously, spitefulness and you end up with a character that sticks out because of unlikability with few redeeming qualities.
In addition to this there are multiple disjointed story treads concurrent to each other that muddle the water rather than add or deepen the main plot. As such the world building is rather Ah Hock and only just set up, just as the plot requires it.
In summary this was not a book I enjoyed reading. It felt as if this book took a lot of narrative shortcuts and would have better served with a bit more breathing room.
If you like a harem Style Supernatural Adventure, this is the story for you. Our heroine has sex with supernatural beings of both genders and tackles monsters and Archangels with aplomb. The action is non-stop although a bit confusing and you will not be able to put the book down until you're done with it. It's a great way to spend a rainy day. Devin Hanson has created a believable universe populated with all sorts of interesting characters.
What an awesome first book in what is going to be such an amazing new series!! I chose this book on a whim and boy, an I glad I did!!! Fantastic storyline, engaging characters, couldn't put it down! A definite MUST read! Can't wait for the next book, I WANT IT NOW😀😀😀
I tried to like this. The premise sounded interesting, but none of the characters engaged me. I really didn’t care what happened to them, and I wasn’t engaged in the story whatsoever.
This is a great bisexual heroine and urban fantasy novel with lots of twists as well as turns. Alexandra Ascher reminds me a lot of Rachel Morgan from the Hollows series but she would have ended up with Ivy as well. I liked her relationship with the various characters around her as well as the heist storyline. I will definitely be picking up the sequels.
An ok read that I have to admit veered into my least favourite supernatural trope of angles/demons/heaven/hell, which probably did it no favours in my view. It suffered with the typical confusion often found in a first in series book and my biggest suspension of belief was the protagonist's age with her so called brilliant ability/experience when what actually happened on paper was falling from one disaster to the next, with no actual investigation work being done, another of my least favourite things. However that being said the story kept up a pace, Caradoc was a great character and I would have loved to see more of him and I would have liked to see more of the police angle work out. Some good things going on but possibly not for me.
I know you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but this one piqued my interest immediately. I'd not read anything by Devin Hanson before this book. I made some snap assumptions about this book immediately that were incorrect and I was pleased to be wrong. I assumed that since the heroine was only 21 there was going to be a lot of YA drama, which is not my preference - I generally steer clear for just that reason. There was none of that to be found. Also, I assumed Devin was female, it seems the majority of authors in this genre are. I was wrong again. I found that Devin brought a fresh perspective and a strength to the protagonist which I was appreciating all through the first book. It had a different enough feel that it was noticeable to me. He brings a toughness to the characters that I really enjoyed. As a prolific reader, I can tell how difficult it is to write outside of your own perspective. He really nailed it in my opinion.
There is so much good stuff in this book! At one point I thought I must be close to the end, because there's been so much action! I was really only 60% through. Oh, man...that's such an awesome feeling! Knowing that you've been on this crazy adventure and so much has happened - enough to fill a whole book in itself - and you still have almost as much yet to go. I couldn't put it down! I immediately went and read books 2-4 on KU and am eagerly awaiting book 5. When is it coming Devin?!?
This series has a unique take Fae, vampires, and other goodies and baddies. I don't like to recite what the book was about in my review - i think that's up to the reader to discover and enjoy for themselves, but I can't say enough good things about this book and the other's I've read in the series. Pick it up, you won't regret it and chances are, you'll be addicted just like i was :)
The book was an engaging action read from beginning to end, I loved the world building, and it had some pretty hot smut scenes, but I had a few big issues with the plot.
1. Our FMC Alexandra only just turns 21 in the book. She's supposed to be an amazing PI, but that's a bit young, IMO? Plus, she seemed to be pretty incompetent at actually investigating on her own, made a ton of mistakes, and needed a ton of assistance from others to unwrap the mystery.
2. F/F warning: As far as I could tell, Alex was supposed to be straight, and there was no indication that she swung both ways. However, because she turns out to be a half-blood , she finds herself attracted to another female, and her lust gets blown out of proportion. I'm not a fan of these sudden magical attraction changes.
3. The addition of a sybil/seer to the team was a bit too much of deux ex machina guiding their actions, but it was interesting how the actions eventually tied into the rest of the mystery.
Minor nitpick, but I found it a bit misleading to co-opt the term djinn to represent all the types of supernatural in this world, but at least they were supposed to represent beings of fire, which is canon.
Overall, I still enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the next book.
This was a hard book for me to get through. I picked the book because I liked the cover and it sounded interesting enough. It popped up on my list as a Romance book, however, I would not call it romance at all. Sure, theirs lust and sex, but no actual romance. I did enjoy the storyline, however at times it seemed like it was a bit allover. Alexandra (Alex) is a PI and her apartment gets broken into. With this, she gets entangled deeper into a world she's all to familiar with, only now, she soon finds out she's actually apart of this world with being half human, half demon. She meets new people, takes on more jobs - watching her back at every turn because someone is out to get her, only she doesn't know why. Their are multiple love interests. I really enjoyed Ethan and Detective Friday.
*Overall the entire story is 3/5 for me. *HEA? Yes. However the series continues but this particular problem Alex faces comes to a close in book 1. *Romance? No. Lust/Sex - Yes. MF and FF. *Action-Lots of action, but its all over. Too many different things were happening
I try not to be too negative on reviews, but there were too many things that I could not overcome with this book. I very RARELY am unable to continue on with a book due to the narration but this one proved that wrong. The narrator was not just not good, she was awful. She attempted several types of accents that were truly HORRIBLE. Seriously awful. I tried. I really tried. Coming back at least three or four different times to continue in an attempt to finish, but I finally gave up.
If the narration wasn’t enough, the book was extremely difficult to get through on its own. The pacing was irrational, the writing was clumsy and the attempt at sexual tension failed on so many fronts. I found that I really didn’t care what the plot of the story was. I didn’t like any of the characters and realized that I even disliked the female MC quite a bit.
In the end I just realized that there are way too many good books waiting to be read to waste time on ones that aren’t.
The writing was awkward, and the plot was hazy. But aside from all that, this was not at all for me. I'm not into young girls sleeping with guys they consider to be their father's age. Also, I'm not into girl on girl. Honestly, though, I've never really been a fan of djinn either. And pairing them with angels and demons didn't really help. Alex is a shitty person, too, so an unlikable main character just adds to the pain of this read. On top of being awful, she's horribly stupid and naive. I'm not convinced she belongs in the supernatural world she's supposed to be a part of. The character interactions are awkward. Nothing feels like it should go the way it ultimately goes. Alex's mother is weird, and her behavior is childish, but she doesn't come across as an ancient being. Neither does David, for that matter.
Then there's the awkwardness of accusing a character of being racist for insinuating that Chinatown is dangerous and then immediately describing Chinatown as being dangerous and shady.... unbelievable.
Alex is a struggling investigator in Los Angeles and takes on a wealthy client through a friend. She thinks this will be a straightforward job but it is anything but, filled with unexplained and seemingly random murders, crazed magical beings and shocking details about her parentage that were previous hidden from her.
It’s all connected in disturbing ways and as she turns 21, Alex learns to work with the powers she has that are being revealed, she and her ragtag misfit friends have the power to change the world for good if they can get there In time.
This novel is an u expected and FABULOUS find, a true jewel (oooooo I hope there are MORE!) and an absolutely worthwhile read
I liked this book as it introduced "new to me" types of magical beings. Alex's demoness mother pops in and out a few times but seems to disappear when she might actually have been helpful. Even though she's half succubus, Alex doesn't seem to have the raging hormones that the heroines do in some other books I've read. She manages to stay sensible and focused on what she wants to achieve. Love to hate her so-called cousin.
The only thing keeping me from purchasing the next book in the series is that I own so many other books already. I need to be responsible and read at least of few of them before coming back to this storyline.
This book really surprised me as I did not know what to expect. I absolutely love the characters and the story line. The book kept me going, wanting to find out what was going to happen next, and ultimately not put it down! All I want to know after reading this, is when is the next one coming out! :) This reminded me a lot of Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum books, but with an urban fantasy twist! The whole concept is really awesome. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
This is a interesting paranormal. Alexandra is a PI with unusual clients. Someone hires her for an innocuous job which seems to lead her down a rabbit hole. All kinds of things start happening to her and people showing up. She has always had a gift but she didn’t know how big of a gift it was.
This Entertaining and the author does a good job describing but yet makes it enjoyable to listen to. Nicely done. I did listen to this on audio and Jessica M Hepburn did a good job.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this, but I'm deep in an urban fantasy groove at the moment, and when I saw that this was about a supernatural investigator based in LA - one of my favourite settings for private investigators, I had to give it a go. I was;t disappointed. It was surprisingly well written despite being sleazy and trashy (none of those are criticisms). Exactly what I wanted from it. Will most likely be picking up book 2 at some point.
Alex is a PI who deals with the supernatural side of things from the point of view of a human. At least she thinks she’s human. She’s a few days away from her 21st birthday when she has her apartment broken into and everything in it destroyed.
Homeless, she reaches out to a competitor/friend who allows her to stay with him and introduces her to a potential wealthy client. The client gives her an incredibly well timed job and reveals that she isn’t human after all and on her 21st birthday she will come into her powers as a lilin, a descendant of Lilith.
I really like all the plot and mythology surrounding this story. The plot was complex and the world building was interesting. I just felt I couldn’t connect with Alex. She didn’t feel real to me, sadly, because I loved the premise of the book and the plot pulled me on.
I may read the next book in the series because I’m curious as to how the character develops and if she reveals more depth to her emotions.
I liked it more than I thought I would. The premise sounded good but the disclaimer made me hesitant. Glad I read it. I liked Alex and look forward to seeing more of her. Good character development. Lots of action. Yes, there was sex but it fit into the story. Recommended.
Loved Alex and her wit. Love that the book takes place in LA where I lived for 20+ years. Love the world and how the author has crafted a paranormal society that is different than other's I've read. This was a fun book with lots of twists and turns. I'm excited to read the next in the series to learn more about Alex and the world that she lives in!
I actually really loved this book! I was hesitant at first, but damn I'm glad I read it.
**** Possible Spoiler****
I also was reminded that I love when a male is doing the writing on oral sex. They are always do it much better than a female. Weird right? Seriously though they go into more detail that is much more believable. About smell and taste...ect...
There was plenty of action in this book, both of a sexual and violent variety. Alex comes into her powers on her twenty first birthday. She teams up with different supernatural creatures to try to save people from what she thinks is an attack by Vampires. I can't wait to read the next book.
