The bodies of vulnerable young women keep piling up. And every one of them reminds him of his own failure…Detective Chief Inspector Ronald Carlson thought he’d seen the worst of it. But nothing could have prepared him to discover his own daughter hanging by a knot she tied herself. So when his first case after a leave of absence is a strangled prostitute of the same age, he vows to redeem himself by bringing her murderer to justice.

Repulsed by the grisly scene, Carlson follows the trail of clues… to another dead sex worker and a mocking video from the depraved madman responsible. As the body count rises, the beleaguered detective races the clock to catch the killer before more parents lose their daughters.

Can Carlson get inside the mind of a monster before more women end up in the morgue?

Tangent is the first book in the gritty DCI Ronald Carlson police procedural series. If you like strong characters, twisted villains, and graphic crime, then you’ll love Caroline Goldsworthy’s atmospheric thriller.

What a brilliant debut novel!
It's dark, but if you like a gritty crime novel, you'll enjoy this book. Once I started reading it, I was hooked and couldn't put it down.
Looking forward to seeing more books from Caroline Goldsworthy in the future.

Fast-paced crime thriller, I couldn't put this one down.
DCI Carlson is a worthy addition to the lists of fictional detectives, clever, committed and world- weary, he is appalled, to once more be pitting his wits against a cold blooded, sexually motivated, serial killer who's crimes seem to mirror those from twenty years before.
Helped by Shazza, who inhabits the dark world of the girls being killed, he races against time to solve the case and prevent more deaths.
All the characters had depth and were completely believable, drawing me into their maze convincingly. Caroline Goldsworthy paints a stark picture of the working girls who are at risk and their back stories which make them vulnerable . As we profile the killer and the girls, the truth is they are all victims of victims, but it's the girls who are being terrorised and killed.

A brilliant debut novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this atmospheric crime thriller full of characters that drew you in and made you care about them.
A senior detective leads a murder investigation to capture a sadistic killer while still trying to come to terms with a personal tragedy. He is befriended by former drug addict and prostitute, Shazza, and hindered by an an ambitious reporter who hatches a plot to catch the killer herself, oblivious to the danger she is about to put herself in. This is a book you won't want to put down until you reach the last page! I look forward to the next instalment in the series.

Beautifully crafted

Tangent is a surprisingly well crafted, well written story. The plot is strong and the characters, although a lot of them, each had a strong voice and personality.
Well done Caroline, cracking debut novel.

An excellent first novel, compelling right from the first page, well researched and with characters who felt supremely real. The first book for my new book club; I'm not usually a big fan of crime writing, but I really enjoyed this one and it's made me re-think my stance on crime fiction!
