DNF’d this at Ch. 12 of 29 with 4 hrs and 13 min remaining.

A Taste for a Mate is book one in the Redwood Pack series by Carrie Ann Ryan.

The prologue is very violent and shocking. The way the wolves change a human is brutal. I don’t know why the fates would give them a human mate, if this is what they have to go through, and their is no guarantee they will survive. And, last their is an overwhelming amount of violence against women in this book, which then provides the men with a lot of anguish. I didn’t care for all the violence.

As for the romance. It never felt like any type of romance. This might be classified as an insta-love storyline, but I never felt any type of insta anything. I couldn’t believe that Willow falls in love with Jasper after speaking to him once. It takes humans longer to come around. Also I felt that Willow gave in too easily to everything she was learning and seeing. She accepts it all with out any backward glance. I just couldn’t believe this.

I disliked Willows thought process. It was over the top and annoying. At one point she thinks Jasper doesn’t want her. She got this idea in her head and instead of talking or asking him how or what he feels she keeps thinking this. Then we have them sleeping together; before they even go on one date. At this point Willow still has this weird idea in her head that he doesn’t want her, but the author has them sleeping together. This doesn’t work for me.

Everything in A Taste for a Mate felt rushed. Things just come at you left and right and their is no time to process. I would have liked things to be drawn out and developed more.

Audio: A Taste for a Mate is narrated by Gregory Salinas. This is my first experience with him as a narrator. I unfortunately didn’t care for his narration. The female characters all sounded a little breathy and this wasn’t when they where in the mood, it was all the time. It was exasperating. As for the male voices; Salinas nailed them and I liked the voices for each male introduced.

A Taste for a Mate was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

Jasper and Willow

Jasper, the Beta of the Redwood Pack and Willow a human

I love their story it was a good read. The plot may be simple but it still captivated me and got me hooked to the series..

It has a little action and more on the sizzling romance😏😉😍 of Jasper and Willow.. I also love that the story revolves about Family and that Kade and Mel are now better together 😳☺

Cant wait to find out what will happen to Reed😳🤗

Fave Quote:
Damn. Life could change so quickly from one moment to the next. - Jasper

Dear Lord, please let her live. Let her survive the change. She doesn’t deserve anything that has happened to her. She gave up everything to be part of this Pack. Don’t let her give her life as well. She can hate me with every fiber of her being, as long as she wakes. I’ll do anything for her, even walk away. But, please, save her. - Jasper

This is the first full length book in a paranormal series set in our world but with supernatural creatures in it… people don’t know about them though… the whole series focuses on a family of werewolves from one of the strongest packs in America, specifically on the alpha’s family… he has seven children, and we get to see them meet their mates while at the same time dealing with a bigger conflict… technically, there’s a prequel novella before this installment, but I don’t recommend you guys start this series there… I think it was absolutely unnecessary and if you want to know more about it, I will leave the link to my review here:

An alpha’s path review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It has a spoiler free and spoilery parts, but they are clearly marked… I will do the same here… I will talk a little bit about my thoughts and feelings without mentioning any specific details, but then I will share some spoiler filled things at the very end… again, it will all come with a clear warning :) so I liked this book more than the previous novella, although it was still just ok for me… again, the relationship felt very rushed and severely underdeveloped… and again, I have nothing against this you-are-my-mate sort of instant connection, but I do want to see some build up upon that later on in the story… specifically with shape shifters… but here, it just never happened… I will talk more about it in my spoilery part… a big part of the story is the conflict with another pack… the big story arch that will unravel over the course of the rest of the series… we meet more important players in this whole thing.. both when it comes to the alpha family of the Redwood pack (the good guys) and their enemies… I’m not gonna lie, I am intrigued by some of the other siblings who will get their own stories, and I am really hoping they actually will get some sort of romantic development in their own books… and not just boom! that’s it, we’re together now… the writing style was… ok, I guess… I’m not gonna lie, the sex scenes are still pretty cringy, although a bit better than what was in the novella… but again, there were quite a few mistakes and typos that could have been easily avoided with another round of edits… usually things like that don’t bother me, but here there were just too may to ignore… it was also a bit darker and bloody than what I was expecting… over all I decided to give this book 3 stars… I am really hoping that the next installments will improve even more… ok, that’s all I can say without spoilers, so here it goes… ;)

The rest of this review will include SPOILERS from this book, so if you don’t want to know any of them, stop reading right now… FINAL WARNING there are gonna be SPOILERS discussed below :)

For a book that’s not very long, this story feels all over the place… I am seriously hoping that everything will improve in the next installment or two, otherwise I might just give up on it… which would be a shame, cause I already do own all of them, since my sister read it first and really liked it… so fingers crossed ;)

XOXO

I had a lot of issues with this book but honestly it was a lot better than I thought it would be. So that's something. Willow was a terribly weak character. She gets kidnapped, collared and beaten because Jasper's scent was in her bakery. She doesn't care. She finds out werewolves are real.. again she doesn't care. Jasper bites her and makes her come in front of the enemies and his family.. she's embarrassed but says nothing about it. Jasper made her his mate without asking.. she doesn't care. She has to close up her bakery.. doesn't care. Do you see a pattern? She just takes whatever is thrown at her with out so much as a word. Like literally she doesn't say anything about any of it! OH and the worse thing she does happens towards the end. They get back to their home from finding a dead body in the woods. They get into a fight and she runs back out in the woods. TSTL! I can't.. I really just can't handle her.

I liked the Redwood pack though. To be honest I don't remember reading the first book... But I rated it with 1 star. the only reason I picked this one up was because it was free.. and I will read the next one (it's also free) because I enjoyed the pack and I kind of want to see how the next one plays out. I know it's MMF.. so Im interested. we'll see!

Tall, dark and handsome keeps showing up at Wil’s bakery every morning, until one day he finally asks her out. Delighted she expects a wonderful night, instead she gets kidnapped, tortured and near killed and at the very last moment saved by Jasper. And let’s not forget she discovers there are such creatures as werewolves, and they aren’t all nice.

Jasper is the Beta of the Redwood Pack, he’s been dying to make a move on Willow, he knows she’s his mate, but Wil’s human and knows nothing about werewolves or about his Pack, but risking it he finally asks her out. Before he gets to pick her up she’s kidnapped by a rival Pack, The Centrals. Jasper and his brothers do everything they can to save her – with the consequences of having to take Wil to Pack lands to keep her safe, to keep her his.

The Central Pack and its sadistic alpha won’t go down easy, they have a plan of their own to get rid of Redwood Pack and their way to do it just happens to lay in Willow and Jasper and destroying everything they hold dear. No amount of blood, family or morals will stop these wolves from making pack with the devil. Literally.

A Taste For A Mate was a great continuation for the Redwood Pack Series! Dark, entertaining and passionate! Carrie Ann Ryan writes like a pro, the text is engaging the reader to react, to feel and to hope. The characters are realistic and the depth of their emotions made this a genuinely interesting read – hoped throughout the book that Willow and Jasper could get a break and just settle down, and be happy for ever after, but this doesn’t seem to be that sort of series. There is a delicious amount of darkness and truly wicked enemies that made the hairs at the back of my neck rise. I loved the darkness of the events unfolding in contrast to the love blossoming between Wil and Jasper.

Jasper had all the characteristics of an alpha, even though he was the Pack’s Beta, powerful, smart and when it came to Willow, possessive. I can’t help but love the traits of a werewolf hero, all the possessive don’t cross on my turf kind of attitude, the desperation for their mate and their protectiveness and hot bedroom manners! But then there has to be something about the hero that makes him relatable, bit weak and in Jasper’s case that was inability to express himself to Willow which caused some major drift and trouble, and after that he was even more compelled to show her that he truly loved her. Loved it!

Willow, orphaned as a child, took to the Pack life like a moth to the flame, she finally had a family and she was so genuine and happy and caring that you could not help but adore her. She had a strong side too but being only human among friendly and not so friendly werewolves, it wasn’t physical. One of the most adorable heroines I’ve read in ages!

What I loved about this novel was the time, everything happened snap quick in the beginning and then there were weeks and months between actions – which tribute so well to getting to know the Pack and letting Willow adjust and bringing everyone to connect deeply. Sometimes the insta-connection is good, but I so enjoyed everyone getting to know each other over months! I truly enjoyed Jasper and Willow getting to know each other and truly fall in love before god awful things begun to happen one event after another.

I loved all the twists in this book! Just when you thought things were settling down and people were happy, wham, the rugs off from underneath your feet and you’re on your ass with a snarling beast before you. Loved it! There wasn’t one boring moment in this book! And the cliffhangers, oh boy I loved those!

All that said, I’m straight off to reading Book 3 “Trinity Bound” which is coming out this month! Oh, and all this talk about cinnamon buns is forcing me to make some. ;)

I really enjoyed the first story in the Redwood Pack series and I absolutely loved this latest installment. First off, this story is at least twice as long as the first book. I was expecting a quick romantic storyline with a small amount of conflict...like An Alpha's Path, (which isn't a complaint because I do love quickie romantic stories). Instead A Taste for a Mate is a romance, a mystery, an action-adventure, and a touch of horror all rolled into one.

The author expounds on the Redwood Pack universe by going into more detail about pack dynamics, other supernatural beings, and the Jamenson brothers. I especially loved reading about the Jamenson brothers because hopefully they will each get their own story in the future.

Don't let my use of the word "horror" throw you off. Carrie Ann Ryan introduces several villains that you definitely don't want to run into late at night in a dark alley. Reading the conflict/violence with the villains definitely had me on the edge of my seat. I'm not a big fan of violence in romance stories but I think in this book the violence was important to the storyline so it didn't ruin the book for me.

I actually could not put this book down, which was a problem since it took longer then my hour lunch to read. Good thing I have my own office ;-). So five stars for this book. Oh and the story ends with a great teaser for the next book. I am hooked!

3.5 Star

Jasper Jamenson and Beta to the Redwood Pack, also brother to Kade and Alpha Heir from An Alpha's Path , has found his mate in human bakery owner, Willow Denton. But dark forces and betrayals are working against them and the pack and try to use Willow to break them all.

At the same time Willow, who had been in the foster care system for most of her life, though thrown into this world she didn't know existed, will do anything to make herself a valuable member of the Jamenson family and perfect mate for Jasper. She's willing to become one of them, body and soul.

Once Jasper realizes that Willow and his pack are in danger, he will do anything to protect them. Will it be enough?

Will the Redwood Pack survive the deception and the loss of so many? Will they get back what was taken?

This installment was much better. Probably because it was longer and able to speared out and tell the story more fully. But just as it was getting good it ends. I didn't realize that it's a total cliffhanger at the end. It wasn't until I heard "epilogue" that I knew the story continued on in the next book.

I'm still not sure I'm a fan of the reader. He just feels a little over the top sometimes. Not as badly in this book as the first.

I would definitely like to continue to see what happens next.

Carrie Ann Ryan steps up the anti with A Taste for a Mate. With the appearance of a conjured demon, the Redwood pack could be in some serious trouble. Experience Ryan's new and exciting twists in werewolf lore. She takes a darker than usual approach by adding magic and demons to the mix. I wasn't sure how it was all going to come together at first, but I was very pleased with the result. A delightful world of magic and intrigue hidden within our own.

The two main characters of the book are Jasper and Willow. I love the fact that Jasper waited seven weeks before asking Willow out on a date. It's so "human" that he was a little insecure. Both characters grow and change as their story progresses and as a reader I love to see those changes.

Ryan brings her story to life with beautifully vivid imagery, witty humor, and lots of sexual tension. Sink your teeth into this exciting and sexy love story. You won't be disappointed.

Sinfully decadent edge of your seat heart pumping action packed paranormal romantic adventure. The Redwood Pack is on the brink of war and it all begins with a turn to the dark side of magic and a deep betrayal.

Jasper Jamenson as the pack Beta is strong, smart and fast, but will this be enough to save his mate and the pack he has always protected? Willow Delton is sweet, funny and has an inner strength that has helped her survive so much loss and sadness in her short life. Will it be enough to carry her through this next part of her life as her world is torn apart and turned upside down? Enjoyed reading about this growing family and look forward to more Redwood Pack.

The Redwood Pack is the strongest werewolf pack around. But when a rival pack, whose leaders are pure evil, enlist the use of a demon to take down the Redwoods, there will be casualties—on both sides. The war has begun, and the Centrals are not willing to back down. Can the Jamenson family, along with the rest of the pack, take the Centrals out—before it's too late...?

Willow and Jasper seemed to be made for one another—which, considering that they are mates makes sense. The chemistry between them was spicy hot, if a bit sudden. There wasn't nearly enough romance in A Taste for a Mate, at least not for my tastes. I would have been happier watching Willow and Jasper fall in love. Instead, we see Jasper claim her as his mate and she quickly accepts it. The end. Wait-where was the romance? The love? The getting-to-know-each-other banter? I enjoy a good “predestined mate” storyline, such as this, but there should also be a visible connection and development of feelings between the hero and heroine, which I just couldn't find in this book. The sex might have been hot, but the lack of connection between them quickly threw a bit of a cold towel on the action, at least for this reader.

The characters were nothing spectacular, and by that I mean they were not the sort that I will remember long after the book is done with. Willow seemed to be a bit lacking; she tried to show how she was supposedly a strong woman who knew what she wanted, but I didn't see it. And Jasper wasn't much different. Other than the fact that he is a werewolf, with strong ties to his pack and family, I didn't get much from him either. The conversations between the two, as well as conversations between other characters, seemed a bit stiff, and didn't really fit. It made it a bit more difficult to enjoy this book, as, besides Reed (who was a bit different from the others), I didn't really feel a connection—of any sort—to any of the characters.

The story was fairly interesting, though it didn't hold my attention from start to finish. There were more than a few rough spots, and while they didn't ruin the book completely, these rough patches did take away from the story's overall quality. For most of the book, the story and pace both seemed very rushed. And yet there were other times when it dragged on a bit. I wish the pace had been just a bit more smooth and steady, though perhaps this will improve a bit as the series goes on.

Taste for a Mate

Working and owning a bakery is all Willow wants to do. Jasper, a very cute man she is attracted to has been coming in everyday for breakfast. Willow has no clue the town is full of werewolves from the redwood pack. Jasper's wolf wants to mark Willow as mate. He is afraid of frightening her. He knows she does not know of werewolves. Finally he asks her out and she accepts and is excited to go with him. When Willow goes to close up, several men abduct her. They keep mentioning Jasper and how he hard marked her. The only thing he had done was wipe flour off her face, she didn't understand. She is terrified and knows they are going to torture and kill her. The kidnappers bring her back to the leaders of a opposing pack. She learns real quick that werewolves do exist and are not just from legends. Jasper goes to pick Willow up and sees her store is torn up and she is gone. His werewolf nose kicks in and he knows who took her. Will he get to Willow in time? The drive to find his mate and to save her is over powering. But the opposing pack may be using Willow to get Jasper (the beta) right were they want him. Kidnapping Willow is not the only thing they are doing to try to take out the Redwood pack.

The story is fast paced and very action packed. The opposing pack is just EVIL! You are on pins and needles wanting Jasper to hurry up and get to Willow. Willow has a strong will and when her mind is made up sticks with it. Jasper just wants his mate and will do anything to get her to safely. Awesome read. Makes you fall in love with the redwood pack. Huge cliffhanger...mad but excited to read book 3!

Diving deeper into the Redwood Pack!

Jasper, Beta of the Redwood Pack, is everything I love in a wolf. Strong, dominant, protective and fierce. His life changed the day he walked into a bakery and smelled that cinnamony sent. Just when he and his wolf have their mate, hell breaks in on Jaspers life.

Willow is a survivor. Orphaned, she has only had herself to rely on. She made a goal and built her dream. Willow is strong, a bit timid but feisty when needed and courageous. For a woman whose life literally got a slapped into a living urban legend I would say she is doing pretty damn good.

Carrie Ann Ryan takes it up a notch with A Taste For A Mate, book two of the Redwood Pack Series. Willow and Jasper will tug at your heart as they steam up the pages trying to find how their pieces fit together. Emotional and naughty. Ms. Ryan really opens up the world of the Redwoods. Getting deep inside the pack, learning the ways of her wolves. Personalities emerge from the background, setting the stage not only for this story but the entire series.

Gregory Sanlinas voice is the piece that completes the puzzle bringing the Redwood Pack alive in the readers mind.

I was lucky to get an ARC copy of A Taste for a Mate (book #2 in the Redwood Pack series) and let me tell you...it's one tasty morsel. In this book we get to meet the whole Jamenson family and find out a bit more about the Redwood Pack. Jasper Jamenson is the Beta of the pack and is in charge of protecting it so he has no time for anything else until he comes across the yummiest scent "cinnamon/Mate," he goes in search of it and finds Willow Denton, a bakery shop owner and human.

Jasper realizes that since she is human he needs to take things slow, so after weeks of stopping by the shop he finally asks her out. Little did Jasper or Willow know that there were others at work - evil at work against them. Willow is forcefully thrown into a paranormal world of her nightmares - werewolves, demons, and witches.

Carrie Ann Ryan has done it again for me with the wonderful world she has created. I adore her characters and have become very fond of two in particular (Adam & Maddox). I can't wait for April when Trinity Bound comes out so I can see what happens next. Once again she has made me cry, but also made made me laugh through the whole book! Great job and I highly recommend this book and author.

A very exciting, emotional and sensual read that keeps you on your toes at every turn.

Willow has worked very hard to get where she is today. Being alone and on her own from a very young age has strengthened her in some areas and softened her in others. She now owns and runs her own bakery and is great at it! She has no desire for her own sweet treats though. But she does have a desire for a recent delicious customer that's been coming in daily to purchase her creations.

Jasper is the Beta of the Redwood pack and has found a possible mate in the sweet smelling baker Willow. After over a month of just dropping in to purchase some of her sweet treats, he finally asks her out on a date. Only at the time of their planned date he finds someone has taken her and will stop at nothing to get her back.

Together Jasper and Willow learn about each other and become stronger better people because of it. So much love is between them, as well as their family and pack. But is love enough to survive what is to come? You are going to have to read this fast paced goodie to find out :)

The second installment of the Redwood Pack series is Jasper and Willow's story. From the beginning I couldn't wait to turn the page to find out what was going to happen, trouble was brewing right from the start. I enjoyed reading the romance between the characters and boy did it flourish! The story has lots of action both between the sheets and out of them. Romantic paranormal lovers will find this authors take on the battle between good and evil very intriguing. I cannot wait to read about the the next Jamenson brother!

I liked the characters. Willow is a much stronger female lead than Mel was in book 1. However, I feel like she just gave in a little too easily with everything. She had only spoken to Jasper once before she was in love with him. It just was a little too rushed for me. The chemistry there and so is the romance it just needs a little extra push.
I did like getting to know more about the pack and the inner working of what goes on with them. I think this will help set up for the other stories. I really want to love this series. I think it has great potential.

Carrie Ann what a wonderful read! I loved that Jasper finally got it right & that Willow never gave up!
It was truly a pleasure to get to know the rest of Jasper's Family! I am thrilled for baby Finn, heartbroken for Reed and I want to know if Adam will come back home (maybe with Corbin's sister???)
I will be getting book 3 right away! ;0)

I'm a sucker for urban fantasy series, so when my friend told me the epub was in sale, I immediately bought it, because i was intrigued by the werewolves and the meet cute in a bakery. Sadly, the book was bad...ridiculously bad to a point it even became funny in its own way. I want to point out that I read the french translation and maybe halfway through the story, i had to pause and look up the original version to compare...the original was bad too, but the french one made it worse because it was translated in a way that was too formal, and long story short the translator had too much fun with it.

still, the translation isn't the only one to blame: the structure was non-existent, and the world building was mediocre. The two main characters, Willow and Jasper, were so bland and weak it was painful, but then they got stuck in an insta love relationship with no development. I'm not kidding by chapter three or four, she's introduced to Jasper's sister-in-law and he tell her that they are now sisters, and Jasper and Willow quickly act as if they were married. They finally talked a few days ago. After the "meeting", everything is spoon-fed to the reader and Willow, there is no suspense and every time something sightly interesting happens, it is cut short.
- Someone is kidnapped? fade to black and you learn like then chapters afters when it's not relevant anymore, what really happened as if you, the reader, were aware of that.
- Someone almost die because they want to be turned into a werewolf and it's a major conflict for the couple? it's immediately forgotten and only brought up in passing.
- Willow learn their enemies' plan while she was kidnapped for the third time? it is, once again, never brought up
- in the last few pages i learned that the pack has a witch population...i had no idea there were witches present

so not only the story lacks details and could benefit from "show not tell", it is repetitive but the so called climax falls short.

It all sounds so bad, but after a while, like I said, it became funny. To be honest i'm quite sad because the story had potential but i don't understand why it got picked up for a translation. I'm also sad because book 2 seems interesting on paper (a m /m/f relationship between a wolf, a witch and a human!) but considering how book 1 was...i'm not sure i want to suffer again

Shifter goodness!!

I just have to preface this by saying I just love Carrie Ann Ryan’s writing. I was so excited to dive into the Redwood pack series and I have fallen in love! (As I knew I would). After reading the first two books in her Aspen pack series (set 30 years (if I remember right) after the Redwood pack series takes place I knew I had to go back to the beginning and I’m so glad I did.

In this book we meet the beta of the Redwood pack Jasper, and his mate Willow. Jasper knew from the moment he walked into Willow’s bakery that she was his mate. His plan was to date her and slowly introduce her into the world of Werewolves, but, an unknown evil had other plans and Willow was literally thrown to the wolves (see what I did there?). On the night of their first date she’s taken by a rival pack and Jasper has to rescue her and this, begins the start of their relationship.

There is a LOT happening in this book. We have a rival pack, The Centrals, with a literal psycho Alpha and heir bent on destroying anyone who gets in their way for more power. They call upon dark and evil magic and are rewarded with Caym, a demon so evil who will happily do their bidding (for now at least… I get the idea that Caym will have his own agenda) and help them in their rise to be the most powerful pack. Their first stop, the Redwood pack.

Can Jasper and his pack win against this unforeseen evil? All the while trying to form a relationship and secure his mating with Willow? I won’t give too much away but, there are so many moments when I just wasn’t sure if we’d get our HEA but, ultimately I knew Carrie would give it to us. The books ends on an intense cliffhanger, leaving me wanting so much more and I can’t wait to read the next book!!

Sexiste, misogyne, creux et pas crédible pour 2 sous, une plaie.

Jasper and Willow's story is intense and makes you a fan of the Redwood Pack. You have to wonder if Jasper will ever really learn not to speak his mind out loud when he is thinking. The Central Pack is causing major trouble for the Redwood Pack. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend.

What a disappointment !!
The beginning was cute (he invites her after a long hesitation, she is a pastry chef ...) but quickly it becomes rubbish !! It's well written and the plot could have been good (I loved the cohabitation of the two souls wolf and human in the same body) but I didn't like it at all ...

What particularly bothered me :
- everything happens very quickly at the beginning and after that nothing happens for a long time
- the heroine finds herself violently plunged into the world of werewolves ... And she takes it pretty well (and when she doubts, the other werewolves told her she shouldn't doubt as if it was her fault !! No empathy !!)
- the heroine finds herself in a mating in two seconds without anyone telling her how it works and she spends three quarters of the book thinking she is not good enough for him
- the heroine acts like a child incapable of making a decision alone and all the others treat her with such paternalism ...
- from 28%, it's even worse !! She becomes pathetic and he displays hyper-retrograde ideas (women are only here for children ...)
- BADASS WEREWOLVES CRIED ALL THE TIME (after the first sex scene ...)
- The Central Pack attacks them ... And nobody reacts for several months (OH if someone would have done that to the Marrok, they wouldn't even have seen the next sunrise !!)
- expected end and finally we realize that not much happens ...

I liked only Adam (especially the scene where he yells at Jasper because he behaved like an assh*le ...)

In short, I don't know why I keep trying reading books with shifters because I'm almost always disappointed and I have a big tendency to compare them with the Patricia Briggs books that I love ...
