Rogue magic and runaway mice were not what Brynn had in mind for a quiet life running a shop…
Everyone seems to have an opinion about what Brynn should be doing with her life. Her father wants her to go on grand adventures while her best friend believes that a wealthy fiancé will solve all her problems. But all Brynn wants is a quiet life, a well-run shop, and maybe someone to share it all with. Too bad the boy she has a crush on is even more shy than she is. However, when Brynn’s placid routine is disrupted by knick-knacks come to life and some unexplained magic, she enlists the help of the boy next door and finally gets the chance to see what’s under his bashfulness. Now if only they can get the knick-knacks to stop trying to escape.
Books have been Kendra’s escape for as long as she can remember. She used to hide fantasy novels behind her government textbook in high school, and she wrote most of her first novel during a semester of college algebra.
Older and wiser now (but just as nerdy) Kendra writes retellings of fairytales with main characters who have disabilities. If she isn’t writing, she’s reading, and if she isn’t reading, she’s playing video games.
Kendra lives in Denver with her very tall husband, their book loving progeny, and a lazy black monster masquerading as a service dog.
Again, I want expansion on all these little shorts! I love the world we are in and the ties into By Winged Chair. Just want more and more and more from all of these.
A short, sweet story with another peek into the world of the Mark of the Least series. Brynn is a shopkeepers daughter living a simple life. The her family and friends tell her what she should want but she knows who she is and what she wants and she's true to that. Another example of the consistent quality, sweetness and happy endings we see in all of Ms. Merritt's wonderful works.
Not every life wants adventure, sometimes the best things are right under your feet and nestled in close to your heart. This short work is a refreshing glimpse into the beauty of mundane moments.
