Like all the Rislandia books, this is about young people trying to deal with normal human feelings in the midst of a war. Unlike the Von Monocle novels, the Steam Knight books are on the sidelines of the main conflict, where the enemies are spies rather than soldiers. The author has an uncanny memory of what it is like to be young and uncertain about the way the world works, and so the characters feel very real. You do not need to read the whole Rislandia series to understand the story, but the first book Knight Training is highly recommended. Despite the espionage plot, the main story in this book is the developing romance, and you will be happy to know it finally comes to a satisfying resolution. Hopefully, that does not mean we have seen the end of the Stram Knight stories, as I am looking forward to more!
James has been appointed guard for Princess Reina. His vigilance thwarts assassination attempts on the Royal Family. I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
