Jane Rhynehart has a cosy shack in the pumpkin-obsessed town of Willow Creek, and a new job—if only she was able to write like the other women in the local writers’ group. But how can Jane write the perfect romance when she’s never experienced love? After a lengthy stay in hospital, budding singer and songwriter Sam Marshall ends up as a resident in Willow Creek Nursing Home. Jane soon becomes his guiding light. But how can he be a man for her when he relies on so many others day-to-day? Will Sam turn out to be the perfect muse to help Jane write her epic romance? Will Jane be the one to teach Sam how to truly live? Does love truly know no barriers?
Jennifer Ryder is a bestselling romance author who loves to write about small towns, swoony heroes and strong females who aren’t afraid to fight for what they want.
Born and bred in Canberra, now living on a rural property in New South Wales, Australia, she enjoys the best of city and country. Her loving husband is ever willing to provide inspiration, and her two young cherubs, Jack Russell named Buddy and sheep that don't see fences as barriers, keep life more than interesting.
This was an amazing read that has left me heartbroken ...
"We didn't get our time."
I LOVED Sam I LOVED Jane Together they were UNFORGETTABLE! Even considering how the book crushEd me in the end this couple is hands down the best hero/heroine I have read so far this year <3
Despite the heartbreak I went through with this story, it was beautiful. Jane was such a giving and adorable character and Sam was a young lost soul who was dealt a bad hand. I was swooning with the development of their relationship, their feelings, their happy moments, their dreams... However, the story plot had a really slow pace during the first half of the book and there were plenty characters involved.
Dont understand why people recommend depressing books, then suggest that you read it without knowing anything. Most people don't want to spend an entire day sad or crying, unless they're in the mood.
This book does NOT have a happy ending, its a heartbreaking love story, and not a romance. The H is very ill, if you get my drift.
First read by this author — but it definitely won’t be my last. I highly recommend that you read this heart-melting story, but go in totally blind. A box of Kleenex should be within reach at all times. And be prepared for a story that will not only melt your heart, but shred it as well by small town characters that are so charming and unique and lovable that I haven’t stopped thinking about them since I finished the last word. Sing It, Sam made a huge impression on me in so many more ways than I could begin to imagine. The lovely cover drew my attention first and then the blurb yelled, “Read me – you won’t regret it.” And believe me, I don’t — even though I did need a half box of Kleenex getting through Sam and Janie’s story.
Jane Rhynehart has returned to the small town in Australia where she grew up. At twenty-three, she’s just come through a break-up with her boyfriend of several years. She has aspirations of following in her grandmother’s footsteps to become a writer. But first, she needs a paycheck to keep a roof over both her and her beloved furbaby’s heads and food in their bellies. That’s how she ends up employed as the Administration and Events Coordinator at Willow Creek Nursing Home.
Sam Marshall, an up and coming singer/songwriter, never imagined that he’d be living in a nursing home with round-the-clock supervision at the age of twenty-six after being struck by a mysterious disease with only his older brother, Ben, to support him. On her first day on the job, Janie is approached at the front desk by a man not much older than herself who she quickly dubs “Mr. Fantastic Forearms,” requesting that she let grumpy Sam Marshall, who’s a resident, know that the “sheriff” was there to pick him up. Not realizing Ben has left out a particularly important detail, Janie sets off to let Mr. Marshall know he has a visitor awaiting him at the front. With no knowledge of what lies behind the door to Room Number 10, an unexpected and surprising first encounter awaits as Janie knocks.
There are so many delights to treasure as you watch and learn all the things Janie and Sam share in common, from the way they challenge one another, the support they offer each other, and how they each seek out special ways to express their feelings for the other. The kind of love filled with simple and caring acts – those unforgettable and priceless gifts. The ones that make a day brighter by just sharing her Nutella sandwich, a trip to the park, surprising him with his favorite cinnamon donuts for breakfast, reading a book to each other or sharing a first dance. Sometimes it’s those simplest acts of thoughtfulness and the giving of one’s self that bring us the greatest joy and pleasure.
Sing It, Sam is an angst-charged book that will send your thoughts and feelings moving up and down the emotional spectrum. The storyline makes you want to flip the pages as quickly as possible, but then again, always fearful of what comes next. Every word is beautiful, poignant and heartfelt. It makes you stop and consider the significance of life and the meaningful elements that make it so. A love so uniquely sweet and true, yet painful from the start — one that made me feel so deeply as it left its meaningful impression on my heart.
And I’ll just add that, in my opinion, this book is more than worthy of a place on the podium next to the likes of The Bright Side, Me, Before You, and A Thousand Boy Kisses.
Tackling a heartbreaking issue that not only affects those in Australia, but here in the United States as well, Jennifer Ryder focuses her spotlight on nursing homes, their patients – young and old – and the quality of care and costs affiliated therewith. I want to stress that Ryder doesn’t monopolize the story with this subject, but she does direct your attention to it and by doing so, gives deserving justice.
The use of “Aussie” lingo went right over my head at times – thankfully not enough to lessen the vibe or intentions for this out-of-tune American. I’m sure it added an extra dose of delight and realism for those who “get it.”
Life is better for both Janie and Sam after they meet and share themselves with each other, but it’s not all happy sunshiny days. From the failures to the triumphs, through laughter and tears, highs and lows, Sam and Janie will capture your heart. They each sparkle with personality that immediately draws people to them. An amazing, but bittersweet, and uniquely told love story that definitely left me with a book hangover of epic proportions. I would be thrilled to see a sequel to this book being released!
It has been a few days since I finished reading Sing It, Sam and I am still an emotional wreck over it.
What a beautiful, heartwarming yet heart breaking journey Ms Ryder has taken us on.
Jane and Sam's story drew me in right from the start. I couldn't help but become attached to these amazing characters.
This is a small town romance - but not your usually small town romance. And our lovelies are not the usually cookie cutter kinds of characters. I loved that Ms Ryder did not take the Australian-ness out of the characters or the story.
I don't want to say too much about the story, as I feel that this is one story that you need to fall into a little bit blind and become completely enthralled in.
A word of advice though? Have tissues and alcohol nearby, as you will need them.
THIS. BOOK. WAS. AMAZING!!!! OMG I am so glad Goodreads reader Jennifer Kyle recommended this book to me! Thanks, Jen!
Janie & Sam. A perfect couple. Strong, amazing, sweet characters, astounding hero & heroine. Jane Rhynehart starts her job in a nursing home while she secretly works on becoming an author like her grandmother. It is there she will meet a resident unlike the others, in more ways than one. One that will change her world.
Sam Marshall isn't much older than Janie, and he sees not only her physical beauty but the beauty inside with the way she treats the other residents and especially him. Recovering from a debilitating illness he is known as Mr Trouble at the home. That is until Janie starts to work her magic. This is a slow build, heart felt, all the feels romance. You will laugh, cry, smile, frown, be happy, get mad. Honestly one of the best Ugly Cry books I have read in a long while. This will stick with me, weeks, months, likely years later. I will remember Sam, Janie, even Ben his brother.
I have to think about how to write the review to this... ... I was 19 when I moved into a nursing home (this is the truth and not a joke).... the things I saw there made me choose this book for review. Half of their huge attic was converted into a furniture storage and I remember choosing my first furniture there thinking about the persons that used to own these things and the reason they were now in that attic. They had a morgue in the basement right next door to a bowling alley - I don't know how often I saw a coroner's wagon drive around to the backside of the building in the dead of the night ... so you would think I was prepared to read this book - right ?
Wrong ...
I thought I knew what this would be about ...
If you think I am not making much sense? well, you should read the book then you would be at a loss too... The thing is ... There is hardly anything that I can write about the story because every sentence might give away something - especially the comparison to a certain book that lingers in my mind .... (not so much because of the story but more because of the effect it had on me) ...
It is my first book by this author and now I am scared and there is only are only two other authors that scare me this way ... One is Colleen Hoover and the other is Jojo Moyes ... In mentioning these two I think I am saying a lot. Especially to people that read books of these two. Such an innocent Blurb .... #shaking my head no ....
I loved each and every character in this book - but I would have loved them even more if I could have changed certain things that I can not name here. The writing was well developed and the author did a great job at attempting to kill me - which is not an easy feature given the number of books I read that should have prepared me for just about anything by now.
- for now? well, for now, I will take good advice I received ... I opened a bottle of wine and replaced the empty tissue box - and even though I "hate" what the author did - I kind of love it too... shortly before the author's last words I was wondering if I should open my review with the words "Is it true"? Because everything felt like it was becoming full circle...
You know when you read a book that claims a piece of your soul…even while smashing your heart to smithereens? A story that by novel’s end changes you IRREVOCABLY? Well, SING IT, SAM by Jennifer Ryder is THAT book.
THE PREMISE: Aspiring romance writer Jane Rhynehart yearns to follow in her late grandmother's footsteps but is struggling to put words to paper. She finds her muse in the most unlikely of places when she moves back to her small Australian hometown and accepts a position as the Administration and Events Coordinator at the Willow Creek Nursing Home. On the first day on the job, she is told to go inform the occupant in Room 10 that a visitor is waiting out front for him. But if Jane was expecting a cranky old geezer to be living in that room…she’s in for QUITE A SURPRISE!!
Especially when he steals a kiss!!
Sam Marshall, a handsome, up and coming singer/songwriter finds himself stuck living in a nursing home at the age of 26 after being afflicted with a rare, debilitating illness. He is all alone in the world, save his older brother Ben, and to say the broody young musician is a bit bitter and disillusioned is an understatement! Dubbed “Mr. Trouble” by the other residents, Sam rarely strays from his room and prefers to wallow in silent misery. But his life is forever changed when he becomes hopelessly smitten with the sweet, bubbly girl “with the cherry lips” who brings him back into the light.
Jane challenges and confounds him, bewitches and disarms him. And, miraculously brings out the playful, impish side of this broody recluse. They lose their hearts to each other, and against all odds Jane and Sam fall into perfect harmony. Their sweet courtship is riddled with challenges and hardships but also is the fulfillment of all their hopes and dreams! Can these two lovers defy the odds and make beautiful music together that will last a lifetime?
MY MUSINGS: SING IT, SAM , a beautifully life-affirming story that celebrates the healing power of love, struck an indelible chord in me! Gah…the hope! The heartache! The tears! The love. SO MUCH LOVE! Where do I even begin to describe the maelstrom of feelings that churned through me while living and breathing this remarkable story?
Jennifer Ryder is a new to me author and I was blown away by her talent. Her writing is engaging and eloquent, the tone soulful yet whimsical, and there’s a realness and warmth and wit to her writing that's truly infectious. Her novel, which is set in the quaint rural town of Willows Creek, is rich in Aussie flavor and overflowing with a wealth of emotion. The sigh-worthy romance that blooms between Sam and Jane is POWERFULLY PROFOUND, ACHINGLY SWEET AND IRRESISTIBLY CHARMING, AND SO HEARTBREAKINGLY ROMANTIC it will give you goosebumps!
And while this is not a cookie cutter romance that follows a predicable path, this story about two soulmates who are miraculously brought together by fate, is a journey you will nevertheless REJOICE in. I found this book to be perfectly balanced from start finish, and even though there are pivotal plot developments that gutted me and had me weeping uncontrollably, there’s also felt an abundance of joy and sweet bliss throughout as well.
When we first meet our moody broody musician hero, he may be broken in body and spirit, but Sam is a true champion in every way that matters!!! I worshiped and hurt for him in equal measure. On one hand, I lamented over his excruciating pain and suffering, the utter unfairness of having been robbed of the life he once had after being afflicted with Guillain Barré Syndrome, as well as the loss of dignity he endures on a daily basis from being confined to an old folks home. But on the other hand, this hero, who can be quite the shameless flirt, has such a magnetic, gruffly charming presence and a sweet, sensitive soul you can’t help but swoon!
Before he met the heroine, Sam was merely going through the motions, isolating himself from everyone around him. If anyone deserved a sweet slice of happiness its him. And Sam finds just that it in the pretty nursing home events coordinator who turns his world asunder. She gives his life renewed purpose, gets his creative juices flowing again, revives his libido—and his heart—and restores his faith in humankind again!!
As for Janie aka “Wonder Woman,” she was a BREATH OF FRESH AIR! So kind and caring, sweet and nurturing, she finds such joy in helping others. And as the granddaughter of “the queen of historical Aussie romance,” writing has always been in Jane’s genes. but how can she pen the perfect romance without having experienced love firsthand? As it turns out, Sam’s the muse she’s been searching for her whole life. And through the course of this novel, we discover she has as much to learn from this brave, beautiful man as he imparts from her.
Their tender-hearted journey together is filled with highs and lows, gut-wrenching setbacks and gloriously sweet triumphs. And while these two kindred spirits experience the kind of heartache in their young lives that truly make them wise beyond their years, at the same time, there’s a purity and innocence to their soul-deep connection that left me enchanted.
Without getting heavy handed, Ms. Ryder explores some compelling issues throughout that made me look inward and reminded me that EVERY life has meaning, and that no matter what the circumstance, we all deserve to be treated with kindness and compassion. I particularly thought she did an exceptional job shedding light into the management of the nursing home system, and the emotional and psychological impact of the quality of care that it's residents receive. Speaking of which…I adored how the vibrant members of the Willow Haven nursing home were woven into the story, infusing the novel with warmth, buoyancy and charm!
My ULTIMATE takeaway? First, that life is fragile and fleeting, so every day we have on this beautiful green earth should be treasured. Secondly, that love is a RARE AND PRECIOUS GIFT and that even in the darkest of times there’s always a silver lining. And finally, that small acts of human kindness are truly what make the world go round!
BOTTOM LINE: SING IT, SAM is a resplendent romantic tear-jerker that resounded deeply! It packed an emotional wallop that left me reeling yet also lifted me up and MADE MY HEART SING!
JR has delivered an exquisite small town romance. Following Jane and Sam on their journey to love was sheer delight. As usual JR’s writing was flawless, the character development spot on, the plot real, honest, and full of soul. The emotions between Jane and Sam felt so real I found myself reading with a smile on my face and sometimes fighting a futile battle with tears.
I would also like to applaud Jennifer for tackling an issue that here in Australia we’ve been battling for too long. Too many young people with high care needs are finding themselves in nursing homes, away from family, friends and people their own age. ALL young people, regardless of their care needs, deserve the freedom to choose where they live, to choose who they live with and to choose how they live their lives. It’s a freedom we all deserve. It’s a freedom Sam yearned for. Thank you, JR, for helping to spotlight this heartbreaking issue.
I absolutely recommend Sing It, Sam. #bringtissues #fivefabulousstars
Where to begin with this review...... I have no idea because I have so many emotions going through my head and heart that I don't want to give anything away because this is one of those books that you have to read and go into it without any spoilers. This is one ride you want to take with a bottle of liquor and a huge box of Kleenex because you are going to need it.
Jane and Sam are to lost souls that come together to help each other out. Only what develops is so much more and what Jane and Sam go through is not a pretty picture but it all flows so smoothly that it will leave you breathless and wanting no needing more.
This story is heart wrenching and so emotional but it is a wonderful no that is not right it is an EPIC MUST READ that it will leave you in tears and breathless saying WTF did I just read..........
I devoured this book. Jane and Sam's story was captivating and I really adored all of the characters. Jane and the world at the home were brought to life really well, and I loved all the quirks of the residents and the things they all ended up doing.
Whilst Jane and Sam might not have the most common type of romance, they still worked so well together and I was rooting for them until the end.
There was a huge surprise that I didn't see coming at the end of the book, and it'll leave you emotional, so be warned. These two go on quite the journey, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I'd love to come back to this world in the future, maybe see Ben get a book, although I'm not sure that is on the authors cards. One can only hope right?
For the last few years each January, I seem to stumble upon a book that leaves me thinking 'nothing else will top this for the year'. And once again it's an intro to an author I don't know and yet I feel I won't forget in a hurry.
About this book, yeah I'm still numb. 'The feels', the highs and lows, the laughter and the tears wrung from me. A small town, quirky characters and real life situations. I can't go on about this story without spoiling for you. I've been touched deeply by it and absolutely recommend you come on this journey with me and fall in love with Jane and Sam.
I finished reading 'Sing it, Sam' about a week ago and this is one of those books that I know will stay with me for a long time. A small town romance with a difference, and a different that I most certainly loved. Jennifer Ryder has stepped outside the box and created characters and a storyline totally unique that you'll be hooked from the first chapter. 'Sing it, Sam' revolves around Jane, who has just started working in a nursing home and is trying her best to write her first book. Sam is a young resident in the nursing home, recovering from an accident and illness that has him needing constant care. The chemistry between these two characters is evident from the first time they meet and I was reading continuously, wanting to know how their story would unfold. The authors writing is exceptional and it is obvious she has done a great amount of research on this topic, down to the finest detail. I felt so many emotions while reading this book. I'd been told by some reader friends that I might need the tissues, and I'll admit, I did cry (a few times), but I also laughed many times, I cheered their achievements and I swooned, because let me tell you, Sam is one fine book boyfriend that I just know you'll fall in love with. I have recommended this book to so many people, and I will definitely be rereading it again and again. 5 beautiful stars.
Sing It, Sam I don't know where to start, I would like to tell you that this book has a happy ending, or that you are not going to shed any tears, that it will not break your heart, that this book is just a romance in a small town but that's totally wrong. This book is much more than that !!!
These 345 pages are simply magical, sublime, beautiful, extremely difficult to read, I do not have the words to describe this book fully and correctly but know that it is worth it. Despite all the tears I have shed, it is a real gift from the author.
The universe of Sing It, Sam can be summed up in several themes. There is the music, writing, love, pain, death, life and the acceptance of it all. From one page to another you will go through brilliant moments while others will be much more complex to read but also you will not come out unscathed from this reading !!!
This book will change you! Sam and Jane are two protagonists who are part of those characters who give you a smile on your lips but also those who break our hearts in the space of a few seconds! Sam is a musician who Is sick and after a long moment in the hospital, he's sent to a care home in Willow Creek where Jane was just hired after returning to her hometown. From the first lines I fell in love with Sam, as soon as his lips rested on Jane's at the very beginning I understood that this story was going to be unforgettable.
And I was right, throughout the novel my love and admiration for Sam only grew to the point of no return. Sam is kind, funny, and he loves passionately. We cannot, not love Sam, this character is a real crush, we cling to him, to his fears, but also to his joys and his sorrows, his musical notes, his humor, his difference that makes him beautiful. For Jane, she's probably one of the sweetest, true, and heartfelt characters I've read in a long time, if not the nicest of all. She's blessed with such kindness, that we have to love her and to want to see her smile and be happy. She deserves it, her way of seeing life, the people around her and the world is sublime and we realize a lot of things inside.
I appreciated that for once there were NO bad characters, just characters broken by the life and death of their loved ones around them and it was very beautiful to read. I also appreciate than even if we have one scene of love it was still magical and unbelievably good.
Even though my heart has suffered greatly. This novel is worth the detour, it takes the handkerchiefs I used, the tears I shed and so much more. Those characters were so beautiful and good that I already miss them. Jane and Sam deserve more and all the gold in the world. They deserve to be happy together in heaven and even if I suffered as hard as I could while reading each page of this book, the beauty and the greatness of this book remains immense, unbreakable and unforgettable!!!
I hope I have the chance to find my Sam or my Jane and thank you again to the author for this breathtaking and dazzling novel! I recommend this read to anyone who wants to learn more about life, death, love, and disease!❤❤❤
Sing it, Sam by Jennifer Ryder “Grab the tissues, 4 stars”
Jane is at a new point in her life. She has a new job and she’s finally trying to write a novel. Writing is in her blood she just has to figure out how to work her muse. Then she meets Sam, and everything starts to change. Life is better with Sam but it’s not all sunshine and roses. Will Jane get a happily ever after with Sam? Sam never thought he would find himself in a nursing home when he was young. He didn’t see a lot of things that he is experiencing currently. He’s simply going through the motions until Jane. Jane gives Sam purpose and reason. They fall hard and fast. Will Sam get to be with the girl of his dreams or will their love story be cut short? If your looking for a light, fluffy happily ever after turn around right now. Do not one-click. If you want a heart wrenching story that is bound for disaster, then click now. Jane is amazing. She has all the traits we want our children to have, she’s kind, she’s compassionate, etc. Sam is swoon worthy in his own way and falls hopelessly in love with our dear Jane. Then you add in Sam’s brother Ben and sigh. I never say this, but I really hope there is a follow up to Sing it, Sam. I need more than the ending I got. Ryder is a new to me author and I was impressed. The only reason really for the 4 stars is a bunch of the Aussie speak was lost on me. I got what she meant but it just didn’t sound right in my head if that makes sense. Other than that I can’t wait to see if she follows up with Jane. Plot-4/5 Characters-4/5 Heat-4/5 Writing style-4/5 Overall-4/5
This is my first book by the this author and what I found was a sweet and beautifully written book that will tear at your heart strings.
What I especially loved was that it was quintessentially Australian from the language to the setting and the characters.
Jane is very sweet and innocent (you could even say protected) having grown up in a small country town. She has a heart of gold and is generous with her time and money all in an effort to make a difference in every life she touches. She is a wonderful heroine.
Jane brought light into Sam's heart and turned him into a better person and I enjoyed reading about their interactions with each other. Actually I would have liked to have seen more of them in the book. Sam was an easy man to fall in love with even in his darkest moments.
I also loved that Ms Ryder touched on some very real and serious issues currently facing many young people in this country that need long term care. It was interweaved seamlessly into the story.
This book resonated with me on a personal level on a few fronts. Having a parent in a nursing home with dementia, a close friend whose partner developed the same illness as Sam and being from Sydney's outer suburbs.
The supporting characters added to the story each in theor own special and touching way and I love how the reader is left to ponder and interpret for themselves what the future holds for these characters.
Book: Sing it, Sam Author: Jennifer Ryder Type: Standalone Genre: Contemporary Romance POV:First Person (Jane) Rating: 5 Heartbreaking Stars!
This was my first time reading a book by Jennifer Ryder and she blew me away with this heartbreaking and emotional story. Her writing is exceptional. I simply couldn't put it down.
I don't have any words to describe this book. I was an emotional mess after reading this masterpiece. I would definitely read it again.
Wow!!! I hope that my review will give this book the credit it deserves. Very well written and extremely emotional.
Set in Australia, Jane was a small town girl. She started to work for a Nursing Home as an Events coordinator. She was very good at her job and took a lot of pride in it. In her spare moments she also had to work on the reception. This is where she met the very handsome Ben, who had come to visit his younger brother Sam. Jane made sure that she visited all the residents and knew what activities they liked. When she got to Sam's room 10 (which had been her nan's room when she had been in here), she found him laying on his bed looking up at the ceiling. She made it her mission to get him to talk to her, like his brother he was very good looking.
She had joined a writing club wanting to carry on her nan's legacy. She wasn't doing very good as the characters were just not talking to her! She spent more and more of her time trying to get to know Sam, little did she know that she was falling in love with him. She found out that he was a singer/song writer before this disease called GBS, which he caught after having gastro, it was a paralyzing disease that also hits the immune system. They spent so much time together that she was helping him to get better and they were both falling in love. His health improved that much that he could leave the Nursing Home and be looked after by community carers, the only thing was Ben had to live in the city for work and the care package they could offer. This would not stop them though, her writing picked up when she started to write their story. Sam had even started to write songs again.
This book makes you giggle and cry!!! It is a very recommended read. (And yes I did do ugly crying!!!)
I am lucky to have come into this endearing, sweet romance from Jennifer Ryder with a unique perspective; as a paramedic I have a thorough understanding of the condition which has struck down the hero of this heart breaking story, and am very aware of the plight of young people who find themselves in aged care facilities in Australia.
I also have family under nursing care whom I visit on a regular basis and am often called to aid the elderly in these facilities through the course of my work. So to say that the author has captured the issues and setting of this book with intricate perfection is no gushing embellishment.
Sing It Sam is a poignant, heart breaking tale of innocent love in a setting you least expect, but nonetheless only adds to the beauty and tragedy of Jane and Sam's story.
There's a innate purity to both of these characters that makes them so endearing. Jane is a simple country girl not tempted by the big smoke; her gentle giving nature has lead her to pursue work in the nursing centre that was her beloved grandmothers last home. Sam, a talented singer songwriter, has lived the fast life of the city music scene, his life now derailed through illness and his resultant rehabilitation; he finds fresh hope for life with Jane as his muse.
The gentle build of their relationship is woven into the everday of life in a care facility and the comings and goings of its colourful residents and visitors, all of whom add to the development of their journey, though at times was a little distracting and I found myself looking forward to more interactions between Jane and Sam.
Whether it was unfortunate or not that I could forsee the ending to this story or that I found the final pages lacked a little impact, it did not detract from the wealth of emotion I felt reading it. This is a tear jerker in every sense of the word, but it is so stunning in it's portrayal, and the message of love so powerful it is well worth the piece of my heart I left with it. 4.5 stars.
Sing It Sam! Sounds like an encore is being called, because we are always left wanting just one more song! This is one of the best if not the best book I’ve read for ages. I can’t make you read this book, but you absolutely should grab a copy and read it! This book covers a topic that is becoming increasingly more prevalent in our communities.
When we think of nursing homes we think about old, frail, grey haired men and women. However, numerous young people are permanent residents in these homes. Which brings us to what effect does that have on them? They are first hand witnesses to death, with no common interest or understanding of the aged.
Sam is 27 living in a nursing home recovering from a debilitating disease. He shuts himself in his room, isolating himself from the other patients. He is angry at the life that he’s lost and what the future holds for him. Depression is setting in and his recovery is stilted.
Jane’s an aspiring writer, her grandmother was an author and she wants nothing more than to make her proud. She meets with a discussion group of writers who help one another by talking things through. Jane seems to be at an impasse, she’s started outlining her characters, but they aren’t telling their story. When Jane starts working at the local nursing home, she tries bringing the patients together by using their common interests and hobbies. What she didn’t expect was to find love.
My eyes have finally dried enough to write my review … But I must say that Sing It, Sam by Author Jennifer Ryder is so phenomenal that I can justify every last tear I cried. This love story begins with a frustrated 23 year old budding singer, Sam, residing in Willow Creek nursing home, recovering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Jane is a struggling new writer and a new employee at the nursing home, dedicated to making the resident’s stay more pleasant.
The storyline is so beautiful and emotional that (even though I had a head’s up to grab tissue) I still read it at my office because it kept calling to me. This book drew me in, and gripped ahold of me and wouldn’t let go. The developing relationship between Jane and Sam is so delicately and deeply written that every time something happened you felt like you were there in the room. The medical aspect was so well done. The supporting characters of the story were a perfect blend of nursing home residents, writers, family, pets and co-employees!
The way the author, Jennifer Ryder, wrote this story is so wonderfully written that I will definitely be remembering and recommending this book for a long time forward! The scene from the river, the scrapbooking group, the luncheon, the hospital…WOW! Just so many memorable scenes. There are minimal, but present and perfectly done, sex scenes. Sing It, Sam was absolutely fantastic! Grab a box of tissues and curl up and read this! You don’t want to miss this one! 5 singing stars!!!
This book brought the FEELS. It has the flavor of Me After You in all the best and most painful ways. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and it's always nice to get a different perspective on things; Aussie in this case. Sam is a resident at the nursing home Janie has just been hired on to work at. He lives in the room her nan had when she was a resident. He's angry to her friendly, and watching her coax him out of his shell is a very sweet, entertaining thing to watch. Janie is odd, and lovable, and just super relatable. Sam is quite handsome, and swoony in his own ways. His big brother Ben, Kathleen and the residents of the home are all wonderful window dressing that add to this love story. And it is, despite the leaking that may happen from your eyes. If you need a good love story that doesn't necessarily go the way you want or hope - this one's for you!
I love it when an author steps outside the box either with the storyline or character. Sam in "Sing it, Sam" is a gorgeous out of the box character and I loved reading his and Jane's love story. The author pulled on my heartstrings and I really enjoyed the journey.
Sing It, Sam was a beautifully written and heart-wrenching romance. I love Jennifer Ryder's books and man did she deliver an amazing story.
Jane Rynehart is working at a small town nursing home while also trying to write her first romance novel. She's struggling because she's never experienced love before but when she discovers that not all the residents in the nursing home are elderly her heart starts beating for a whole new reason.
Sam Marshall has GBS, a debilitating disease that's forced him to learn how to walk and do everyday tasks all over again. After spending nearly a year in hospital, they moved him to the nursing home to continue his rehabilitation. When Sam thought all was lost, Jane starts making visits to him and overtime their relationship evolves into something truly beautiful.
This book will have you reaching for the tissues multiple times over but it's so worth it. I highly recommend reading Sing It, Sam.
Sing It, Sam was a bit different to what Jennifer Ryder usually writes, for this one, I needed tissues. Sam was diagnosed with a disease which landed him in a nursing home to recover. When Jane started her new job at the nursing home, where her nan the 'well known author' resided in, until she passed, Jane was not expecting a man a few years older than her to occupy her nan's old room. With a curious mind but reminding herself 'it's none of her business' Jane slowly but quickly, became friends with Sam. This heartfelt, soul searching, struggle and love of Sam and Jane shows how some people can meet in unusual places, yet feel as though they have known each other for an eternity! Really enjoyed reading this book, a part from needing the tissues. I was gifted this ARC by Jennifer and I'm really happy to say that I've read this book and would have purchased it anyway.
4 1/2 Stars of goodness...... Jennifer Ryder has given to us in Sing it, Sam, a gorgeously written story full of Aussie humour and quirkiness. This story, though simple in it's telling, has a myriad of emotional levels that will speak to every reader in their own special way. I cannot in good conscience regale you on the amazing characters that make up this story, as I believe that would take away from the absolute enjoyment you will experience as you are reading this one for yourself. Suffice it to say that the charming and captivating way that this author has woven an unusual reality into such a piece of magic will leave you not only with tears, but with a heart wanting more. A beautifully beguiling read that hit a raw spot within me, but was so worth the emotional outpouring. Jennifer Ryder...a job well done!
What a uniquely beautiful story! I’ve never read anything quite like this before. I loved the small town setting, the way some very real issues are dealt with and the fact that it is so very Australian.
Jane is young, sweet and has a positive, hopeful outlook on life, and Sam has been through more than any 26 year old should have to. Their journey is beautiful and heartbreaking at times, and it really makes you stop and remember exactly what is important in life.
