For those who have no understanding of economics, the Great Economic Thinkers is great book to begin with the history of economic thoughts. It is a remarkable introduction to the greatest economic thinkers of all time.
Decent overview, but falls short of delivering any meaningful critique or depth. The writers present each economist’s work in an overly simplistic, almost celebratory manner, without diving into the nuances or exploring the contentious aspects of their theories. Instead of examining any criticisms, limitations, or ongoing debates surrounding these ideas, the essays read more like high school summaries—“who is this economist,” “what did they do,” and “why are they famous.” While the basics are covered, there’s no engagement with the counterpoints that would give readers a more balanced understanding. Adding perspectives on why certain theories are flawed or controversial would have made it far more insightful.
There are hundreds of the books on the captioned subject. For those who have relative or no understanding of economics, the Great Economic Thinkers is great treasure to begin with the history of economic thoughts. This book is a remarkable brief introduction to the greatest economic thinkers of all time, from Adam Smith to living legend on inequality studies, Joseph Stiglitz. Taking analogy of Schumpeter's history of economic thoughts, this book justifies its content as it goes through biographies and development of economic thoughts of the thirteen thinkers that the book considers merit for.
This is a very interesting book which presents succinctly the ideas of 13 Economists from the origin of the field to this day.
I would have given it 5 , but far from it being an introduction - it sounds more like a review of their lives. Not easily accessible to someone with basic or no understanding of economics. From the title, that should have been the case IMHO.
I really liked this because I learnt a lot of new stuff and that’s one of my main reasons for reading. I have very little knowledge of economics but this book is a great introduction to the most important thinkers. It’s not overly complicated so accessible to many.
