Two killers are prowling Manhattan. It's double duty for Erin and Rolf.
A detective doesn't always have the luxury of giving all her attention to just one case. Erin O'Reilly and her K-9 partner, Rolf, have just started to sink their teeth into their latest investigation—a pair of Scottish gangsters, tortured, executed, and washed up on the rocks—when another mystery intrudes. A beautiful young woman is found dead in a locked hotel room, posed with a bouquet of fresh roses. It looks like a carefully staged suicide, but Erin isn't so sure. Soon she's juggling two cases at once, dodging bullets in a budding mob war while trying to nail down a cunning serial killer—one who just might be stalking her in return.
Steven Henry is the USA Today bestselling author of the Erin O’Reilly mysteries and the Clarion Chronicles.
Steven learned how to read almost before he learned how to walk. Ever since he began reading stories, he wanted to put his own on the page. He lives a very quiet and ordinary life in Minnesota with his wife and dog.
A fast-moving action and quick read that hold your attention throughout the book as Erin O'Reilly and Rolf are working to solve 2 cases in the fourth book of this series. This is a good police procedural showing the work of a K-9 dog. Two men bodies are found in the rocks in New York's harbor. The Special Crime Unit was called to investigate the death. The men have been tortured and killed education style. Erin is visiting the Corner Pub when bullets and an explosion occur. As the investigation continues Erin is told to look into the death of a young girl found in a locked room that looks like suicide. Is a serial killer at work? Rolf is able to pinpoint the smile of the perfume. Will Erin and up like this girl? Meanwhile, members of the Special Crime Unit discover that the killer is probably a German wanted by Interpol. Again Rolf is able to show Erin where the killer is to be found. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND of for a fast easy read.
I love this series so much! And Steven Henry did not disappoint in his latest book Double Scotch. The relationship between Erin and Cars is wonderful and I think Cars is my favorite character in the book. What you say! An Irish mobster? Well yes he's such a gentleman and he is so good with Erin. Double Scotch begs to ask the question how many times can one little bar get blown up. Well my friends we'll just have to wait and see. I can't stress enough if you haven't already please start this series ASAP!
I really enjoy this series and following Erin's story. I felt really bad for Kira through most of this book and I really enjoy her as a character so hope she sticks around. Also got introduced to the department shrink this book who seems like a nice enough guy that I suspect will show up more. I remember thinking when Trevor appeared that he seemed a little 'forward' and strange (flirting with a police officer on duty conducting work) so I am not surprised he was the bad guy. As soon as Rolf went off their track and Trevor appeared at about the same time I had a sneaky suspicion he was the killer. I also had this thought every time Rolf was acting 'off' like Erin please listen to the dog would you. Once again I get the feeling Webb is like a exasperated parent when dealing with Erin and Vic. I feel like Rudel will show up again despite the fact that everyone thinks he is dead. Erin's interrogation with Trevor was interesting to see it was her first real interrogation. On unrelated note I think it is interesting that all the titles of the books have been names of various 'Irish' or at least whiskey acholic beverages. I wonder if this will continue.

Two young men drift ashore in Manhattan, identically dressed in warm sweaters. One wears a watch cap, the other doesn't. Their hands are zip tied behind their backs and both have been shot in the back of the head. One's fingernails have been pulled out, as a form of torture. And then, in a nice hotel, a beautiful young woman is found dead. She is dressed in a black dress, her makeup is perfect and she lies peacefully in bed, a bouquet of roses in her arms. The cops say suicide, but Rolf's K-9 nose smells something else, and Erin starts to think it's the work of a serial killer. Once again she's caught in the middle of a deadly shootout over the dead men, who are Scottish seamen. In between that, she works the serial killer angle alone. And of course, she and Cars grow closer, something that isn't going unnoticed. Another enjoyable read. Happily, there are about 20 of these books, so I have a while to savor them. By the way, it took me a few books to realize the titles are all the names of alcoholic drinks and the subject of the story.
Things I like about this book in particular and the series in general: the conversations between the detectives and Erin’s verbal fencing with Carlyle and Corcoran, the sense of place, and the straightforward way that the detectives investigate the crimes. Things I don’t like: Erin’s constant and apparently unreasonable belligerence and the gigantic chip on her shoulder, ditto for Vic. This is the fourth book I’ve read so far; I’ll read the next one, the. we’ll see.
This one was a bit predictable. Well, maybe more than a bit. I liked it, none the less. I think one of the things I like about these books is the dialogue. Steven, if you're reading this: a toast to your skills in writing snappy and authentic-to-the-character dialogue. (Even though I don't drink alcoholic beverages, I'd quaff a root beer in your name!)
Can't put these books down! Love how Vic & Erin work together, you can feels Jones's fear,. Steven brings this group together, throw in Webb (semi groff) boss, Cars (half teddy bear, half father figure or not) add great writing, you get a great read.
I love all of the books about Erin. I worry about things she gets into. I really like Cars!! I hope there are many more books about Erin and her dog. I also love the other people because they are real.
Totally fantastic read. Amazing from start to finish! Impossible to put down once I've started this book. I am eagerly looking forward to many many more books by him. Please keep them coming !
This is my favourite so far! Absolutely action packed and i could not put it down! Her and him (you know who) oh i am here for it! 🫠 I am practically obsessed with this series 🫠
I thoroughly enjoyed the book as Erin and her police dog try to solve two homicide cases. The plot is full of drama, intrigue people and a good dose of humour.
I love this series. It's fun, it's funny, it's just plan good stuff. That said, some things happened late in this book about which I feel I really must address the author. If you are not the author, you can skip the rest.
Steve (may I call you Steve?), my dude, what's all this with Glen D being a scotch? You can't have Irish gangsters running around drinking scotch, when there's fine Irish whiskey in the world! Unless that's actually why someone is trying to kill Cars, it makes no feckin' sense. A fellow like that would be drinking Midleton, or Knappogue Castle 21 Year, or something like that. All this time I've been thinking Glen D was an Irish whiskey you just made up for your books, then it turns out to be scotch? No. Just no. That's like having a Russian mafia chief habitually end his days with a glass of gin instead of vodka.
Also, near the end you called Jameson (one of the most popular Irish whiskeys in the world) a scotch. Them's fightin' words, Steve.
I am enjoying this series a lot. The authors style & his twists & turns get exiting & have me looking forward to each new book. Some scenerios are a little fantastic but that is what makes it good reading.Elizabeth Flynn
Steven Henry has delivered yet another high-paced, engaging read as we follow Detective Erin O'Reilly and her K-9 Rolf. This time around they have two cases to solve: a locked room hotel guest found dead and two Scotsmen who washed ashore who'd clearly been tortured and then murdered. Diving yet again in the murky waters of the criminal underworld in Manhattan, Erin and Rolf are hunting a wanted terrorist AND a serial killer, hoping to bring in both before they kill again.
Just like the previous books this was an enjoyable read, however I found the two main investigations less convincing and I’m afraid Erin irritated me a little bit during this story. Solving the cases seemed to rely too much on coincidences and I got a bit tired of her protestations of been perfectly fine. However the story was still worth 4 stars.
Two unrelated homicide events keep Erin and crew busy. As I am coming to realize happily, Mr. Henry keeps a taut rain on excessive verbiage and a fine-tuned handle on police action and investigations.
A good continuation of the prior 3 books. The plot is fairly straightforward but not without twists to keep the reader interested. The book is well written and easy to read and seems to be over way too soon. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Wonderfully rich in entertainment. Characters are brilliantly crafted. The mix of emotions and motivation are fascinating. Fast paced. Impossible to put down.
It’s a fun police procedural with Erin trying to solve two crimes at once. I enjoyed Erin’s evolving relationship and witty banter with the Irish mobster Carlyle.
This one was kept me on my toes with having two cases running at the same time. It never got convoluted or muddy which is a testament to Steven’s ability to be organized and clear in his writing. I did feel that Erin’s character was a little whiny and she had a bit of a victim mentality in this book which drove me a tad nuts, but she came around in the end. Another fun read.
