Keno Don Hugo Rosa, known as Don Rosa, is an American comic book writer and illustrator known for his Disney comics stories about Scrooge McDuck, Donald Duck, and other characters which Carl Barks created for Disney-licensed comic books, first published in America by Dell Comics. Many of his stories are built on characters and locations created by Barks; among these was his first Duck story, "The Son of the Sun" (1987), which was nominated for a Harvey Award in the "Best Story of the Year" category. Rosa created about 90 stories between 1987 and 2006. In 1995, his 12-chapter work The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck won the Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story.
By this point in his career, Rosa was quite polished but still produced fun, imaginative and fanciful stories, most of which I had never read before. The standouts for me were the long form adventure that gives it title to this volume, and "A Matter Of Gravity" which takes one of my favorite forms of duck stories in which one of aspect of reality is altered creating the opportunity for all kinds of crazy gags and consequences, in this case a change in the direction of gravity for Scrooge and Donald (but no one else). As usual, the volume itself is beautifully produced and printed, giving the artwork plenty of space to shine.
I rarely re-read books, but I welcome this series for a chance to revisit the Don Rosa duck stories I first read in comic book format twenty years ago. So many artists have imitated and paid homage to Carl Barks, "The Good Duck Artist," but only Rosa truly rose to be a peer. These stories are quirky, inventive, thrilling and laugh out loud funny.
"A mater of some Gravity" is one of my favorite Don Rosa stories, but there's also a couple of stories here that's not that interesting ("The Last Lord of Eldorado", "Space-Varmints") or that I might have read too many times ("A little something special").
As always, I still really enjoy Don Rosa's duck tales. These ones all were stories I had never read before, and they are a bit of a mixed bag, but when they work, they are great. The gravity-defying story with Magica is especially memorable, but the anniversary story with Scrooge is pretty great too. The title story, for me, did not work very well, though.
One of the things that was really interesting was to learn of Rosa's celebrity overseas, especially in Europe, as the Donald Duck comics remain extremely popular over there. According to Rosa, the Duck comics are the best-selling comics in the world due to their abiding popularity in these European nations. And yet, if you look up sheer numbers of sales on Google at least, usually one hears things like how, for example, One Piece is a current king. I am not sure how to measure this.
Another great Don Rosa collection! I should have reviewed this immediately after I read it but I remember enjoying all of the stories - especially the titular story, which is full of history, booby traps and other treasure-hunting goodness.
It’s hard to know what to say about these. Binge reading them isn’t the best format as they can be a bit exposition heavy. But the stories are fun, the humor layered, the art great, and the extra material is dense. Love these books and so does my son.
This was a present from my brother - we used to love reading Don Rosa comics as children. Reading this anthology really took me back to those times. Such fun adventures full of humour and detail.
Tässä oli monia suosikkitarinoitani ja pidin myös lopussa olleesta elämäkerrasta. Se tuntui poikkeuksellisen henkilökohtaiselta, kun Don Rosa kertoi suhteistaan faneihin.
