Kitty is just a normal girl trying to find her way in the world when she runs into some trouble that brings her right to a traveling circus. The three insanely hot guys take her in and give her a safe place, and soon she realizes the Circus of Night is far more than it appears.
So another year begins. My first book of the year comes from an author I already love Emma dean This Read was part of my 2020 bingo challenge with the cake house. It covers the stand alone bingo ✔️
Vaundeville runaways is a shifter RH set in the paranormal council universe. This story is SUPER DUPER easy to read, a fun shifter book for a lazy afternoon. Kitty is young early 20s woman who chooses to be a stripper /dancer despite having a business degree out of passion for dance and expression through movement. However misadventure befalls her and she ends up at a dodgy strip joint with a boss who tries to kill her- among other things !!! (This is not a dark book, don’t worry nothing bad happens on page) And then COMES ALONG the hunky shifters! Yum! There is a little magic but honestly this is more of a simple love story don’t think too hard about it. Everything really falls into place with a HEA ending.
Multiple supes ✔️ Circus theme (no clowns) ✔️ RH stand alone ✔️ HEA ✔️ Short shory✔️ Sex on page steamy build up ✔️ The harem kind of blend but have some distinctions ✔️
Would 100% recommend a really great book to start the year off!
Vaudeville Runaway is my first Emma Dean book but won't be my last. This standalone reverse harem not only had multiple perspectives but was set in a magical circus filled with shifters, witches, vampires, demons, and who knows what else, how could I not love this book.
Calvin, Adam, and Damien are three lion shifters who run the circus that they consider their pride, it's a generational thing so these people are family. Calvin is the alpha and he gives off some serious and dominant vibes while Adam is playful, the one people can come to, and Damien is the third, the enforcer who may seem gruff but is a softy underneath. These guys are protective, caring, patient, and supportive, and the exact things that fmc, Kitty, needs.
Kitty is very independent and unapologetic about who she is and while she may have snark for days she also has a big heart. Kitty is the perfect fit for the circus from her name to her talents as a dancer. However, Kitty also needs a family, connection and that is just one of the things the circus provides for her.
This isn't a shiny story, it's a little gritty but has a HEA. The plot was great, a magical circus that travels and helps out who they can. The descriptions are fantastic and the circus seems magical even when you don't count the actual magic. There was very little relationship drama, Kitty and the guys are made for each other. The circus is the family that Kitty didn't realize she needed. I can't wait to jump into more of Emma Dean's stories.
This was my first book by Emma Dean, and I was pleasantly surprised. Vaudeville Runaway is a reverse harem paranormal / shifter romance. It also features a circus. Which I adore.
We meet Kitty, a stripper who seems to have the worst of luck. We meet her in the book as she's being chased down by her ex-boss and his bouncers. She severely injures the ex-boss with her heel, but the bouncers catch up to her and almost SA her. THANKFULLY, her "knights in waiting" find her before anything else can happen to her. And that's how she meets her 3 men - Adam, Damien, and Calvin. These 3 men just so happen to be shifters. Each of the men have an unique personality, and they know immediately upon meeting Kitty that she is their mate. Even with that knowledge, they're patient and supportive with her, even if she chooses to leave them and not agree to their "mate match." The remainder of the book is their journey in falling in love, kitty's legal issues with the ex-boss, and her making her decision to join their mate bond or not.
This is an amazing, easy to read book. I was thoroughly engaged to this book, and I hope there's more to this series at some point.
Set in the council of paranormals universe, a stripper with an ironic name and three lion shifters in a circus.
Multiple POVs Three guys Confident and outspoken MC Bonding
With the exception of the abuse and attempted rape this story is light. It’s more focused on the will she won’t she which did get a little boring.
I liked the friendship with Laura. The MC is overconfident and the story itself felt too easy which took a little of the enjoyment out of it. Other than that the circus is magical and I liked the plot.
I’m going to preface this review by explaining I’m a really big fan of this literary universe. I started with Spotted Her First (standalone), then the Chaos of Foxes series (trilogy), and the short in an anthology. I mention them all not because you need to read them, but in the other books in this universe a lot of the characters usually make cameos between books, and I’ve read some reviews where people complain about it (personally, I’ve never had a problem with it). While this book is set in the same universe, you don’t see cameos like with the other books. There’s mention of things here or there from other books, but it in no way detracts from the story and is done in a way that there is no doubt what’s being discussed.
Now, the story. Kitty is fantastic. She knows what she wants, she knows what she enjoys, and she has no qualms being true to who she is. Circumstances may have been hard for her, but she rolls with it, straight into the Cirque and a world she knew nothing about. I genuinely feel that the world building in this universe of books is one of the author’s strong points. Yes, the books are contemporary in some ways in that the books aren’t high fantasy and are in the modern world, but there’s this whole society hidden in the shadows that’s had to be built. Every time I pick up a book in the Council of Paranormals universe, I get sucked into it. This book is no different, and as a standalone, it’s a nice change from the series that tend to be the prevailing storytelling format in the RH genre. Don’t get me wrong. I love a series, but sometimes you want a standalone, and with this standalone being part of an existing universe, it’s actually kind of a great mix of the familiarity a series offers and the newness of a standalone/first book of a series. The storyline is fun and sexy, it’s well-paced, and the characters come into their own. Loved it. Brilliant and entertaining read from Emma Dean.
I loved how realistic this book was. Kitty reacted to situations the way a normal person would react which is refreshing to see in paranormal books. The circus environment was described wonderfully and I really hope there's more to come from Kitty and her lions.
Kitty has ambitions to be a star dancer in Vegas. She’s talented but life has knocked her down more than a few times until she finds protection in her three lion mates. This was an easy read, all the characters are likeable and it followed the normal RH storylines, a bit more mid burn with a focus more on plot than steam. It was a good read for our book club pick
So it was a unique enough take on a shifter series, being that they were in a travelling circus 🎪 with no inhuman treatment of animals as the shifter we were the animals & I loved the fact that they did an adults only second act.
Our female protagonist Kitty is an okay character, she’s a woman who is true to herself and ended up stripping just to get by before her boss tried pimping her out. *trigger warning ⚠️ there’s the mention of attempted rape & other women forced into sex trafficking*⚠️
Our girl was saved by three hot lion shifters who she ends up being mated to. They take things very slow, she gets to get the family who treat her better than her own did.
I wasn’t a big fan of her guys they were sweet enough but I’ve literally never heard of such a shy and almost submissive Alpha & his enforcer and 2nd were similar. I liked that they didn’t push her into anything and that they travel north America helping people but they were just lacking a real presence.
The witch who is also the doctor I found it strange that she dated the alpha all through her teens until she went off to university & now she’s best friends with kitty.
Also I hated the conclusion of the ex strip club/ pimp boss. Like with magic could no one get him to confess???
I don’t know the spice wasn’t even that good for a reverse harem, I was kinda disappointed. Oh well
This book is probably my newest favorite stand-alone. My favorite thing about this book is that the conflict is not centered around misunderstandings and hard feelings with the romantic interests, like so many romance novels. The characters are honest and forthright about their intentions and needs and it's refreshing. The conflict involving the villain Matteo is realistic and believable in our world but the magic of the Circus is still fantastic. Usually, I would wish for more of this group and their storyline, but I think that this time I'd like to imagine it for myself. Just a beautiful life full of magic, lion pups, and sexy trapeze artists. Highly recommend for a fast and fun read.
I really liked Kitty and the idea of a magical travelling circus that was a sanctuary, but the rest was meh.
The world building was overdone, and I was wondering when we would stop reading about Kitty getting to know the circus and start reading about her getting to know her mates. There was barely any relationship development. Nearly all the conversations they had happened off page. As a result, there was a lot of "telling" and very little showing.
The spice was underwhelming for an RH. The group mmfm was awkward. The MMCs felt manipulated into touching each other rather than out of genuine desire. The men were bland personalities that were disposable. There was more of a connection with side characters.
The last act drama and resulting criminal justice situation was difficult to swallow and just weird. Plus, how it was solved made no sense even with 'magic' involved, I was left wondering why they didn't use magic in the first place?
Loved the FMC, the circus and the RH idea, but I was left wanting better details.
Catching up on reviews. Didn’t realize kindle wasn’t marking these completed.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Emma Dean has become one of my favorite authors! Her characters are so real you feel like you know them. Kitty was a professional dancer trying to make her way to Vegas. Of course, her bad luck wouldn’t make it easy. After breaking down on the way, she got a job at a sleazy strip club to try to make enough money to repair her car and make it the rest of the way. Until her sleazy boss insisted she have sex with a customer. No way was Kitty going to do that, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. She took off with her tips and tried to run, but his bouncers caught up with her and decided to have a little fun of their own. Lucky for her, the circus was in town and someone heard her screams. Want to know what else happens? Get this must-read book and find out!
I loved the characters and the story, but I had to ding it one star because of ignorance of how the law works. She was tried, convicted, and sentenced in a criminal trial - and at that point, charges can no longer simply be "dropped" just because the plaintiff changes their mind. It’s the state that brings the charges, and without a mistrial or successful appeal, the charges hold.
The only reason I am making a big thing of it is that it's how the author saves the day and resolves the big crisis. It’s a flawed and clumsy deus ex machina, like a magician pulling a rabbit out of her hat only to find that it's a smelly dragon who flames her hands.
But it was otherwise a fun story, and made me want to read more in this world the author built.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was sweet standalone. It wasn't anything super original, but I liked the circus aspects. A big portion of the plot revolves around Kitty being charged with assault and battery for stabbing her employer with a high heel when he attacked her. A lot of the legal proceedings were dead wrong and it really bothered me. Of course, I'm a law student so it's quite possible that others might not notice this. But I'd implore the author to do better research about legal proceedings if she's going to use them as a plot device. But I do recommend it as a quick shifter RH with an interesting circus spin.
Good Interesting, consistent world-building Enchanting, atmospheric setting Strong, confident, self-determining, sex-positive main female character Heroic, respectful main male characters Well-fleshed out secondary female character/female best friend Realistic straightforward coherent villain motivations Enjoyable smut
Neutral Black and white morality
Bad Relationships between the main female character and main male characters were undeveloped. EVERYTHING involving the human judicial process/system was inaccurate which made it very difficult to suspend disbelief and be invested.
DNF (did not finish). What made the book unfinishable, in your opinion? I tried to give this book a chance because the main character was different from the average female lead I've read in reverse harem books. However, she came off as too crass and unrelatable for me. There's nothing wrong with being a stripper, and occasionally, I like snarky heroines, but I think the author took her attitude and tweaked it too far. In addition, the romance between the characters seems very hollow. Especially with the whole faded mate cliche that has been a little overdone. Overall, it's not a bad book. It just wasn't to my taste.
One young woman who is willing to risk it all to make it where she belongs. She may of been a stripper but she didn’t sell her body. Now if her new boss didn’t think he owned her and could make her sell her herself. Her knights in shining armor will come as a triad of lion shifters. No one expected she would be so special to them besides a damsel in distress. I love how Kitty really tells how she feels and has no problem letting others know. And the circus theme makes it even more of an adventurous journey for her.
Such a good story with phenomenal writing and I didn’t want it to end. I guess I was a bit let down by the ending because the whole book kept building and building up to something but I guess I wanted more. Not giving anything away but some of the court items had me questioning if that was right, it seemed a bit much and a really quick turn around for a few things but it’s all good. Definitely one to catch, if you like alpha shifters and a good sweet romance. Happy reading.
Definitely will add this to my “super sweet PNR list” that I use for recommendations. It isn’t super spicy, what I wouldn’t give for an epilogue that included her being claimed, but it has that heart achingly sweet romance where the men are completely adoring and willing to do anything for their mate. I loved that it wasn’t instalove, like mate bonds can be sometimes, and that they took time to get to know each other and to sort out the FMCs problems before she decided they made her happy and that “running away with them” was what she wanted.
This book surprised me. Not in terms of the reverse harem and Kitty adapting well to the paranormal life and the circus (thos were pretty standard, especially for an Emma Dean RH), but the court case was surprising. There aren't often real world implications for a lot of stuff done in paranormal books, understandably so. So I found it an entertaining read to her go to court over the attacks. The management and running of the circus was interesting, though I have no idea how accurate it is in real life.
Loved this circus shifter romance. Kitty is a great character, her story sucked me in right away with the made dash she made and then it all just kept getting better from there. This was a wonder read, great characters, heartfelt story arc and and a tearful HEA. Emma Dean is a wonderful writer and this was just another amazing story added to her portfolio. Also I just straight up love this shifter series, after reading the prequel I was instantly hooked!
What a great read from Emma Dean. I get so much into the series that finding a good standalone is a nice change. And Vaudeville Runaway is just that. With a great plot line and characters that are easy to love. Kitty was a great leading lady. She is strong female lead, that sets her own path that she follows. The guys are freaking hot and perfect for her. I really enjoyed this read and look forward to more from Emma!!
I was actually hoping this would’ve been sexier. There was a lot of slow burn going on, but with 3 men and 1 woman, I was hoping for more than 2 sex scenes. But overall, it’s a great story. 3 men help a woman escape from being attacked and take her into their circus lives. Oh, and they’re lions! There wasn’t much for shifting in this, but I love the idea of having mates.
Enjoyable RH story of a girl down on her luck who actually gets rescued by a circus, as opposed to running away to join it. It has all the steam of an RH theme, but also danger and a court case and circus acts and shifters and other paranormals. I would have given it five stars if it weren’t for the forced drama of the court case. That just didn’t feel right in the story at all. I did enjoy all the characters though.
Once I started reading this story, I could not put it down until it was finished. I loved it. I love Kitty personality at all times. The males were just great and i really like Adam the most. He was dreamy...to me. Not saying the other two weren't dreamy, they didn't pull at my heart strings like Adam did.
This was my first book from Emma Dean. Yes i would read more from her as well. Would love to read more within this series.
3 & 1/2 stars rounded up. There were some things about this story I liked, and some that I didn't. I really wanted more time with the lions. The beast side is why I like to read the paranormal shifter stories, to see the beast be tamed by their lover. The main characters weren't really fleshed out enough for my tastes, though better than in another book by this author. I did somehow like the heroine, she just seemed so strong for a human living in the paranormal world. I would have liked more explanations for some of the things going on in the story. It intrigued me enough to pick up another book by the author, but not enough to want to continue with this series.
