A proud geek and video gamer, and champion of complex female protagonists, Jo brings her page-turning screenwriting style to books to weave well-crafted, suspenseful stories with twists you don't see coming. She writes YA books under Jo Ho and adult romance books under Joanne Ho - most of them featuring dogs!
A self-taught screenwriter, Jo's writing life began when she created the groundbreaking, critically acclaimed CBBC action fantasy television series, "Spirit Warriors," which introduced leading actress, Jessica Henwick ("Game of Thrones," "Star Wars: The Force Awakes") to the screen. Granted the biggest budget ever given to a CBBC show at the time, it was nominated for "Best Children's Programme" at the 2011 Broadcast Awards, with Jo herself, going on to win the Women in Film & Television's "New Talent" Award in 2010. Jo even made history for being the first East Asian person - man or woman - to have created a British television drama series.
Since then, Jo has worked with some of the most acclaimed producers in the world with several television shows and movies currently in development, she also writes for games. When she isn't working on her own stories, Jo helps others with their work - she is one of the BFI's (British Film Institute) recommended script consultants.
Jo suffers from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivities), a debilitating condition she has developed over the last few years which has left her mostly housebound. Unfortunately, it is still not officially recognized in the UK despite the World Health Organisation listing it as a physical disability. There is currently no help for sufferers of MCS in the UK. Unable to travel or attend meetings and writersrooms, she has lost many screenwriting opportunities but has refused to allow the condition to rule her life. Despite the wrench life has thrown at her, Jo started to write and publish books.
Her debut novel WANTED, Book 1 of the Chase Ryder series has been a bestseller in 15 YA categories. It also won top prize in the YA Sci-Fi category for the 2018 Readers' Favorite Book Awards. It is her dream to bring all of her book series to screen and she believes she can make it happen with her readers' help!
Jo lives in London and hopes to travel across America one day in a super kitted out, MCS-friendly, Zombie-apocalypse-ready RV with her lovely fella Matt, and three equally lovely kitties.
The box set consists of eleven separate books in the Twisted Magic series. It starts the main character, Marley Gray, as her father drops her off at her dorm room at college. The first time being away from home and her father who raised her as a single parent. He has moved across the country and got a job at the college, to support her, but also to allow her to have her own space. She doesn’t know anything about magic, witches or even think they are real. The university is very old and one of the main areas of the grounds is Copley Square, which features a lot in the books, from present day and the 1600’s.
Her roommate is a very rich girl with famous and well known parents, called Cassie. She hates the limelight around her parents and even though she loves them, she feels ignored by everyone else in their circle. She has little to no confidence and is very reserved. The girl across the hall has a weird run in with the person who should have been sharing with her, but took one look at the room and who was to be her roomie and stormed out. The surprised roomie is called Tyler, who lost both parents recently and was shocked by the state of affairs her parents left her and her younger sister in. Her sister Ally ends up fostered nearby, but has to have a lot of medical interactions.
The other girl who stormed away, was Eve, who had come with her older brother, SI, who runs a bar and lives nearby. She packs on the make-up to cover her face and dresses in black like a Goth, but has no other links to their life than her looks. She had been at the college the previous year and dropped out due to an event that affected her badly. She wants to avoid the cliché of girls she used to mix with then.
For what was listed as a safe area, there have been two dead bodies found recently and the girls are warned to stick together when out at night. The four girls, once brought together, start to notice something strange occur after their first night out together before classes start. They see something odd when walking back to the dorms and quickly find out that magic is real and that they have all been born with special powers, which have now been triggered by their coming together in such close proximity.
Add to that the presence of a strange young man called Christian, who knows more about them and their future, than they know themselves, they have a lot to discover. The books go on to cover events from a fight they tried to stop between Christian and someone called Michael, to a famous hanging tree in the grounds of the college, made famous for hanging witches in particular, through the daily events the girls go through as they discover more about their powers and their own family histories.
The girls will have to learn to work together to defeat a great evil that wants to destroy them and that will keep killing until they stop it. I loved the fact that all the books were included in a box set and it is also at a fantastic price right now! Each book can be purchased separately and are each quite short reads. Having all of them together was definitely the best way to read them, I just hope there will be some more of them soon! All the main four characters are young women, but there are equally strong male characters in Si and Christian. I liked the way the storylines took you from the present day, to the murders, back in the past to the time of their ancestors and the witch trials in Salem. The beginning of the girls mastering their powers leads to more and more danger and lively situations for readers. I received an ARC copy of the boxset from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the boxset.
The pros and cons of listening to his entire book. The story is great so I hate for it to end but on the other extreme it didn't happen in one sitting but a few chapters each day. Most likely I will listen again, one book at a time. The characters are real and a bit quirky. The writing is great. Between the authors words and the narrators performance it kept me listening and curious.
The story surrounds four college girls, none who know anything about magic. They're all very different coming from different walks of life. It turns out they are witches, powerful witches. The story follows their journey as they understand and take on their powers and fight a powerful enemy.
This is very much a character driven story. The author never lost me once switching from one girl to the next. For anyone who enjoys urban fantasy this is a great book.
This story in not just about Marly, but also about 3 other girls that circumstances or fate bring together. Even thought it can be confusing and unexpected in the first couple of chapters, you soon get to know all the group and what connects them. I loved all the story and all the characters and their personal dramas. Each book ties with the next in such a succession that I truly recommend to read all the collection at once. You will love it (do not be scared by the fact that it could be long, it is totally worth it)! The story still doesn't end with book 11, and there are some amazing plot twists. I really, really, would love to continue the story with volume 2. I've listen this book on Audible.
The Twisted series is a young adult paranormal series that follows four young college age women who unknowingly are destined to play a role in saving the world from evil using undiscovered powers. This is a coming of age story for four girls with very different backgrounds who are brought together by faith. For me, it felt very drawn out and had a hard time keeping interest in the story. I wound up just giving up at about 60 percent. Some of the girls were needy, whiny, and very naive, which doesn't sit well with me as a reader. The supernatural aspects of the story I have come across in other books. This was just an okay read for me.
The Twisted Saga books 1-11 is the epitome of a book made for TV. This series is written as a TV series with each book being a week’s installment. All I can say is WOW!!!!! Jo does it again. Her descriptive writing creates imagery that really puts you in the scene. I LOVE THIS STORY!!!!!! The scenes are so descriptive and freaky in a good way. I could picture the scenes and where they would put the breaks and everything. Descriptive scenes put the reader in the story as we (well I) find ourselves talking to the characters as if they could hear us. Each of the girls and even Christian is completely relatable. The girls, Cassie, Eve, Taylor, and Marley, are coming into more knowledge and learning how bad habits can lead to bad trouble and weaknesses are openings for bad. Some of the girls are becoming stronger in their powers and others are finding out what they can with their powers other than make mistakes. Jo Ho continues to develop the characters, both main and supporting, in such way that the reader is anxious to what will happen next. Who is this 5th member of the coven???? Who can the girls really trust??? Will they ever really learn to trust and work together or are they destined to fail?? I love how Jo Ho has turned coming of age into a powerful metaphor of fantasy, magic, mystery, and intrigue that everyone would love to read or WATCH WEEKLY(HINT HINT PRODUCERS). Every single girl if honest with herself should be able to relate to these girls. These college girls are not just silly girls who immediately bond because they are in the same dorm and roommates. They each have their own baggage who makes them leery of the others. As the story develops things happen that change how much they trust each other until finally they are almost forced to trust at least a bit. The girls are slowly realizing that they need to be careful what they wish for and that they need to decide what route their powers will take them. The "Trouble" is so encompassing as each girl comes into more turmoil both with their powers and their lives as a whole. Just as all young adults start to come into their own without really understanding how they can become an adult, which is scary, while not wanting to lose themselves. We all go through this time in our lives, often multiple times, when we want to turn to a loved one but a) don't see how they could ever possibly understand since they never had it this bad and b) not wanting to worry or bother them. Who all really knows of their powers?? How much of what has happened to them has been orchestrated by a greater power??
I love the mystery Jo Ho adds to each book. While she exposes a little bit more about each girl, she also leads us to more questions. Being older I have to remind myself of what my friends and I were like as freshmen in college when I read how the girls are acting. Part of me is wanting to tell them to knock it off and then I remember they are still growing as humans and have only just been thrown this added responsibility. Everything I was expecting was turned upside down as this story gets even more twisted than even I could imagine. Just as in real life, the girls took so much for granted and are now paying the price. There is no way anyone could read what happens and not be affected and want to scream, "NOOOOOOOO!!!" Jo Ho brings everything to this story. Her writing brings all the characters to life. Just as with any season cliffhanger I can't wait until the story continues. If anyone in the TV industry is reading this, YOU DEFINITELY NEED TO MAKE A SHOW OUT OF THIS SERIES.!!!!!!
This is a most awesome series since it is based on real-life situations young women can become involved in. No, not necessarily the magic or demons. I'm talking about the body shaming, mental illness concerns, petty back-stabbing done by so-called friends and other real-world struggles. Add to that the awesome storyline that involves magic, demons and handsome young men (and a handsome young ghost), and you've got a fit-for-television series that I would love to watch. I loved reading this series and cannot wait for next episode. Each episode has shown to be better and better. The character have grown into people I care greatly about. I am hooked on this series!

Total Score: 5/5
Summary: Like most girls Marley, Eve, Cassie, and Tyler have never felt like they fit in leaving them isolated and alone. Now going to college means a new chance, but what they find will forever change everything. Marley was told that the things she sees are not real, but that isn’t exactly correct. Cassie has never lived up to what her famous parents expect. Eve’s past tragedy flavors every action in her life. All Tyler wants is to get her little sister back. Now you would think they have nothing in common, but when you add magic to the equation nothing will be the same. With magic comes gifts they never expected and an enemy bent on their destruction. This is an incredible journey as the girls struggle to master their gifts as their world spirals out of control. Each book or episode builds on the last allowing the reader a glimpse into their world. I for one loved listening to each audio-book that brought each of the characters unique personalities and quirks alive. I will be waiting impatiently to see what happens next. Will they survive or will their enemy Michael have the last laugh?
This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
First of all, it's a good story, with characters that feel real, all of them being rather ambiguous, showing both the good and the bad in them, the four girls especially so... One moment you like them a lot, the next you start wondering why they seem so self-centered, uncaring, sometimes downright foolish, and at yet another moment you feel compassion for them.... The tale is as twisted as the title suggests, nothing is obvious, nothing and nobody stays totally good or totally evil. And that's what makes you listen on to the story.
The biggest drawback? CLIFFHANGERS! Right from the start the books in the box set feel like episodes of a TV series - each book ending abruptly, forcing you to jump to the next to find out what happens then... At the end of the box set the author herself explains that it's a series intended for TV, and I can easily imagine it on screen, as both the plot and the world created are indeed very filmy, very cinematic... I do hope one day it will be put on screen as it would definitely make a good show. BUT when I read my books I like to have a complete story, or at least each book in a series to have a smaller plot completed in that one individual book, with a larger plot continuing throughout the series... Otherwise I feel cheated somehow... And this set is just season one - you get to the middle of the story and that's it - another cliffhanger waiting for you there...
That's why it's only 4 and not 5 stars for the story.
As for the narration, I generally like it a lot ; the voices are well done, the emotions ring true. The only thing that makes me again give it 4 not 5 stars is the speed of Ms Voller's reading - it's definitely too slow, I sped it up quite a bit (after all, it's over 29 hours of listening material....).

I really enjoyed this collection! It pulled me in from beginning to end and I absolutely need the next ones! This is written like a TV show. Every book is like an episode. And yes, just like TV, it does leave you hanging book to book, sometimes worse than others. I really enjoyed the way that it was written. It flowed very well, had plenty of action and intrigue to hold my attention the entire time. I loved getting to know the characters as well as we did. We change character point of views often. We even get to follow around some of the bad guys and get into their heads as well. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing on what's going to happen next. There has not really been any sex in the books, just some kissing for the most part. This would be appropriate for teen/young adult readers. I was very happy to have been reading these in the collection because I absolutely wanted to continue to the next book every time. I had to know what was going to happen next. This story does end on a cliffhanger. I desperately need the next books to find out what is going to happen and how things are going to be resolved. I loved that the story is so long because we really get to know the characters and get plenty of details. The pacing is fantastic as well. Everything keeps moving forward and never felt like the details were just dragging things out. Hopefully the next books are coming very soon! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
From the beginning it is an easy flowing story through the lives of four young girls that find themselves in a very unlikely story, as it had walked out of these fantasy stories. I love the way the girls slowly start to built the trust in each other and in their ability. I was most attracted to the story of Cassie. Even though I liked what everyone was thinking, but I must admit, sometimes I lost the plot of the story. Still I loved how the girls discover their abilities with the little help from Christian who helps them in his unusual form. Also a little history is thrown in the mix of what their ancestors had to go through. These awful witch trials, that condemned everyone that was perceived weird or not conform the standards of that time. Just as in modern times where there is still that stigma, that is why the girls are not openly displaying their talents. It is an addictive story that ends dramatically at the end of this epic last book, because the very evil they are trying to destroy is trying to get them destroyed. It gives a realy Twisted end to it. And by the looks of it, it's working. This is a thrill to read this box set of 11 books, and it does right how the story ends, wanting to read more of what happens. Are they going to survive this onslaught of evil on them?
Four girls, Marley, Eve, Cassie and Tyler, are starting their college experience and are brought together by something strange and mysterious. An Accidental death and a past they know nothing about are the catalyst to the girl’s new normal. The powers are exciting, but the responsibility they bring is daunting. The four must stop the seals from being broken which will bring the apocalypse. But, you know, no pressure…. For the most part I found this story exciting and entertaining. I have to admit though, the character Cassie got on my nerves. She was so insecure and had zero self esteem. She fell for the dumbest tricks and just bugged for the most part. But in the last few books she started changing into a person that was way more tolerable. The other girls were ok, they all had their strengths and their flaws. And the story itself was pretty good. There were times it felt like the story started to stray away from the whole preventing the apocalypse thing, but maybe the author was just setting up some future plot twists. All in all, I enjoyed the books and I think you would like them if you enjoy urban fantasy and stories of witches and demons. 4 stars *I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
My review is based on the audiobook. This volume contains the first 11 books in the series and does end on a cliff hanger. Overall I enjoyed the story. Each of the 4 girls has their own story as well as their story together and the author does a fantastic job blending their journey's together. Cassie's insecurities grate on my nerves however I understand why the author wrote her this way. The narration is perfect in pacing and distinguishable character voices. There is alot going on in this series but the story is always moving forward and kept my interest through out. My only negative is the cliff hanger ending. I prefer that an author note in the description that it ends on a cliff hanger, I am not a fan of them and will normally wait for the full series to be out before purchasing. That being said this is definitely worth the read for fans of YA magical/fantasy/paranormal and I look forward to the next volume.
I really enjoyed the story and adventure but really struggled with how we jumped around into characters heads. There was no clear break or indication who’s head were in until you started reading the next paragraph. In saying that it was still a great read and could see it as an awesome tv series.
I liked that the characters all came from different backgrounds and circumstances and faced everyday real challenges. Seeing how their lives and themselves were viewed from the other girls to how they viewed their lives and selves is exactly what occurs everyday and it was fantastic to see that in a book.
This is an awesome series! I listened to this audiobook night after night until I finished all 11 books and I cannot wait for the next book in the series! The narrator does a fantastic job with all the voices and emotions. The books are well-written with diverse, fully-developed characters. There's a ton of action and supernatural elements. I'd actually love to see this made into a TV series. Jo Ho is a new author to me. I first read/listened to her Chase Ryder series and moved on to this one fairly quickly. I'll definitely be purchasing more of her work.
This was the first time listening to the author and narrator.
I would definitely listen to more books by this Author, and I would gladly listen to the rest of the books in this series, I am disappointed at how the books have ended so many unresolved story lines. I have so many questions.
The narration was average, the narrator didn’t do anything wrong, I could listen to her again. Maybe it was that all the characters sounded the same!? She still brought the story to live, just that the characters was lacking.
I would suggest this story to fantasy readers/listeners.
WOW 😲 what a fantabulous series! This should totally be made into a tv series as fans of supernatural, charmed , vampire diaries would definitely tune in! The writing is so good that you find yourself lost in this complex world as if you are actually in the episode that you are reading and the girls you get to know in each passing episode as they master their magical capabilities! A truly magical series filled with action, mystery and twists and turns that I would definitely recommend!
ARC received. Wow! This brought me back to high school, despite being college aged girls in the book. Lots of drama, as in vicious, petty, girls attacking weaker, less popular girls. Plenty of supernatural elements to keep things exciting. The ending was a bit of a shock.
Great series, each books ends almost like a chapter ending, like an episode of a show. I was left wanting more after each book. Four woman with completely different personalities and from different backgrounds and stories, are put together and have connection that they are forced to deal with.
I wish I could give three and a half stars, I’m really torn. The characters were well developed as is the plot line. It was fast paced and I read it relatively quickly. I’m not a fan of the end though, it kind of made me mad. I think I would continue reading though if there are more books.
*10/5- I’ve been thinking a lot about this book, more specifically Eve, with it being Domestic Violence Awareness month, I have never been close to even guessing what a victim feels, but this book got me a touch closer.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I was excited to start listening to Twisted Magic, obviously for the story line, but I liked that each of the 11 stories were little story nuggets. I thought I could sit down and knock one out in a short sitting. However, I found that each story lead me right into the next story. There was maybe a slight conclusion at the end of the "book," but really I found it to be more the end of a section or part. I adjusted to that format after the end of the third book. The story itself is great. It combines magic and religious hints. The first book is a huge intro to characters, and at first I had a hard time keeping everyone straight, but that ironed itself the further I listened. I found the characters were very unique and not stereotypes that are often portrayed in books. The stories were exciting, and the cliffhangers at the end of each book immediately strung me into the next book. The 11 "books" though made listening to 30 hours of story much more manageable.
Allyson Voller did a great job with the narration. With all the characters, she manages the various voices well.
I received a copy of this audiobook at my request, and I have voluntarily left this review.
I enjoyed these stories, but not as much as I would have liked to. It took longer than necessary to finish and I wish it was more concise. If it was shorter, I would have enjoyed it more.
