The Lonely Planet Story

Once While Travelling: The Lonely Planet Story

Rate this book
The highly readable Lonely Planet Story: Once While Travelling is a unique mix of autobiography, business history and travel book. It traces founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler’s personal story as well as the often-bumpy evolution of their travel guide business into the world’s largest independent travel publishing company. In 2007, the Wheelers shocked the publishing industry by selling to BBC worldwide. For the first time, they explain their reasons behind the sale, and their hopes for the future of the brand. Above all, their memoir reveals the spirit of adventure that has made them, according to the New York Daily Times, ‘the specialists in guiding weird folks to weird places’. Lonely Planet Publications was born in 1973 when the Wheelers self-published a quirky travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. This was quickly followed by what soon became the backpackers’ bible, South-East Asia on a Shoestring. Going boldly where no other travel publisher had ventured, they catered to a new generation of independent, budget-conscious travellers long before the advent of mass tourism.

Dari perjalanan itu lahirlah South East Asia on A Shoestring.

I really enjoyed this book. Part travel guide, part discussion of making guidebooks, publishing industry and business.
It made me reminisce about my backpacker days and made me want to travel more.

What I love about this book is that the founders of Lonely Planet tell us about how it started, a snippet here and there about their travel journeys and a whole lot about running a business and the insider information on what it really means to be a travel writer and writing travel guides.

I, for one, love to travel recently. And I've always envied those who make a living in the tourism industry, whether it be flying the aircraft, being a stewardess or writing about it professionally. This book is a good wake-up call that, although travel writing is fun and definitely an enriching career and experience, all jobs come with hardships.

This was a very good read indeed. The only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 is because the years mentioned are rather all over the place. They went from the 70s to millenium and back again.

Enjoyed reading this one, for about 10 out of 14 chapters. The growth of this travel-focused publication is interesting and endearing to read as you go through their shared journey as twenty-somethings, with not so much stable finances, and still backpacking. This made me quite nostalgic about being in that stage as well, and there are more fond memories than bad ones. As it moved to their lives as a married couple, to having kids, and engaging with fellow travellers who ventured into publishing, the book was stronger in this sense. I thought that it lost its steam towards the end where the narration became more hurried in wrapping up what happened after the height of their adventures in getting a well-known brand that caters to people who also caught the travel bug.

So glad I read this book. I can now die safe in the knowledge that I do not in fact regret not having pursued my dream career as a guidebook writer.

As an avid reader of LPs with dozens of books still piled in place of pride on my bookshelves it was a riveting and satisfying read. The company and founder Tony and Maureen sound exactly like you'd expect them to be based on the vibe of their books. Except for the Ferrari maybe!

A great rollicking tale, that really captures the innocence of travels past and the real adventure that was the pre digitalworld.

The 2nd half becomes a combination of fledgling business misadventures mixed with travel, whilst the first half, really captures Tony & Maureen's individual journeys that brought them together and their love of travel together.

The structure of these memoirs was the biggest mess I've ever seen. Did this guy insist on doing his own editing too?? Thank goodness he doesn't write the guidebooks anymore.

Despite the current downtrend in travel guides and independent bookstores the Lonely Planet has just opened its first shop in the UK, at Manchester airport (http://www.thebookseller.com/news/lon...). This book is an old account of the founding of the company, but that doesn’t make it less relevant to the current situation.

The authors Tony and Maureen Wheeler founded Lonely Planet and in this book they tell both a personal and a business story. The majority of the narrative (and you sense probably the driving force in the business) is Tony, whose enthusiasm for travel and confidence as an entrepreneur is a charming mix of slightly irritating bombast and genuinely impressive action. The interjections from Maureen often give a radically different perspective on the same events, as she presents more of the challenges and gritty practicalities of their business. Their contradictory relationship is perhaps one of the reasons for their success in publishing; the idealism and appeal of setting up an indie for an area that was virtually uncovered seems both incredibly brave and stupid. As do many of their adventures. But then, I am probably more of a Maureen than a Tony, and without an enormous amount of hard graft and strategy over a long time this business would not have been such a success. They tell some wonderful tales of remote places and people that are probably totally changed today, as well as some dramatically close shaves with finances and staffing that must be more secure now. There is a real sense of the optimism and wonder of first arrivals and fresh starts that may have been part of that period in time, or perhaps is intrinsic to these two personalities.

Despite tough competition from the Rough Guides series and now increasingly bloggers and online sites, The Lonely Planet remains fondly thought of as a reliable and all-encompassing brand of go-to adventure travel guides. I arrived in my current flat to find an Africa guide in the loo- as far as I know none of the other people who live there have travelled to Africa- but they obviously enjoy it vicariously. Although I’m not likely to travel through Manchester I’d love to see the shop, just to get a sense of the scale of this publishing house now. I’m sure I’ll need Lonely Planet in the future, so I wish them all the best, but after reading this I’m pretty sure they can handle anything.

This the story of a couple who made a living from travelling. They really lived it. And it'll make you really jealous, heheh. It chronicles their beginning (Chance encounter at a park in the U.K., then marriage), their early adventure from Europe, across Asia to Australia, their setting up a travel publishing company, the challenges they faced with work, each other, and with raising children... Everything. And it's got lots of memorable pictures of their travels.

I had no idea Lonely Planet was such an old, established company with a very colourful and interesting history before reading this (I thought it was just the TV show and a series of books). This is really recommended for backpackers and people who love to travel (Or who love to dream of it). Tony also has a penchant for talking about history and relating technological advancements throughout the 40 or so years that the book spans, which makes it even more interesting.

A word of warning: You might be bored reading about the company's problems, and sometimes the description can be a little too hurried (e.g. Maureen flew to Frankfurt, left the kids in London, then when the book fair was over, she met them in London and flew back to Australia to join me before we went to...).

Makanya saya suka.

Overall, cukup menarik.

The book I brought with me to Thailand (author autographed, from Wide World Books in Wallingford).

I had hoped the author(s) would have spent more pages on the original overland trip across Europe and Asia in the early 70s than on the nuts and bolts of the publishing empire that resulted from the trip (although with my own publishing background, that part was not without interest to me). Some good bits of writing here and there from both Tony and Maureen. (See quotes.)

Brilliant Book. It traces the the travels that ignited the global brand of Lonely Planet. It all started with SE Asia, and this was their first guide book "the yellow bible". We go on travels with these two, as well as settle in Australia as the overcome obstacles to launch their hand printed guide books in Australia. I loved this book and would read it again.

who says that one must choose between family, hobbies and career? Tony and Maureen have shown it all through their, as seen in the book, wit and courage to hold fast their marriage, their passions to travel round the world and their prospective business along with their family and friends.

Actually written by Tony and Maureen Wheeler, this is the story about the founding and operating stories of travel publisher Lonely Planet. Thoroughly interesting, this books functions as almost a de-facto autobiography, a book of travel stories and a fascinating insight into a publishing company.

If there was one word to describe this book, I would use 'rambling'. Although the content is interesting, the book lacks structure and that makes it a little confusing/frustrating to read. I was glad to reach the end of this book and am not sure if I would recommend it to others.
