I'm a 48-year-old child who has no plans to ever actually grow up.

I make my living as a paramedic, clinical educator, for a busy hospital system and work as a street medic in a 911 system.

In my free time, I serve as the director of the Boulder County Paranormal Research Society, and investigate claims of haunted properties, people, and objects on both sides of the Atlantic. I love to read, particularly SF/Fantasy, history and historical fiction, the paranormal, and basically anything that piques my interest. I appear on the TV shows Haunted Hospitals, Paranormal 911, Paranormal Night Shift, Haunted Case Files, and several others.

I am an avid video gamer, table-top gamer, and love to build Lego. My wife and I are the proud humans of five adopted rescue cats and one smelly but adorable dog.

I was inspired to read this from two shows mom and I watch, Haunted Hospitals and Paranormal 911 (highly recommend btw) It got me curious and I started looking for more along the same vein.

Some stories in truly send chills up your spine.. (check status updates for some quotes). I could have quoted pages and pages of this book. There were a few that were truly heartwarming and one that had me snorting and rolling my eyes (in a good way).

Kyle's story at the end, is just.. beautiful and powerful. I won't spoil it here for you. I was awed by him and his courage.

It certainly makes you think more about the afterlife and the lives of the people who can't/won't move on. It give me comfort to think that my loved ones will be there too when its time to go.

As for the darker entities... I don't know whether it would be better to understand them or not. *shudders*

What surprised me and not surprised me was hospital's attitude toward ghost stories. Surprising in that people's careers can be in jeopardy if they talk about it and not surprised considering they don't want people uncomfortable or freaked out. (It also made more sense when I would at the end of the shows Mom and I would watch, saying some of these people who were in the medical field has left that job before telling their story).

Still, I don't think it helps to keep it silent either. Some things should be talked about more.

Would recommend, a fascinating read.

Get knocked down. Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. Get on with the job. No matter what, that’s just what nurses do.

I went into this expecting a fun book full of spooky encounters, but what I got was so much more.

Full disclosure: I've worked in a handful of medical settings when I used to do medical record-keeping for jails and hospitals, and I've had a couple of creepy and odd encounters of my own (including working the overnight shift in an urgent care where one particular hallway was definitely haunted), but more importantly, my mom (who is one of my best friends in the world) has been a nurse since I was a kid, and I have so much love and respect for nurses thanks to seeing some of the things she's dealt with.

This book fully doubles as a love letter to nurses and medical professionals and I adored that aspect of it. Quotes like the one I added above warmed my heart time and time again while reading these stories, and the author strikes me as such a kindhearted soul that it was impossible not to enjoy his writing.

I know most of you are looking at this review to hear about the ghost stories, though, and let me tell you, they didn't disappoint! There was a mix of creepy tales and odd experiences intermingled with incredibly sweet, touching stories about families and patients who were ready to move on, and I loved the fact that we got to see both ends of that paranormal spectrum.

This book also tackles mental health quite a few times, particularly in one chapter where the author discusses the long-going conversation between believers and skeptics regarding mental illness and paranormal experiences: does a person see entities because of a mental illness, or does an ongoing negative spiritual encounter cause trauma (which we all know can lead to depression, anxiety, and more)? As someone who has mental illnesses and has had traumatic paranormal experiences, I thought Estep handled the conversation with a lot of care and respect, and it meant a lot to me.

Finally, I can't talk about this book without talking about Kyle, the final chapter's subject. Estep devoted a massive chunk of the book to a cancer patient he befriended and his experiences as he nears end-of-life, and it is equal parts heartbreaking and touching. I'm a very strong believer that spirits come to us most frequently not to frighten or harm us, but to deliver messages and to comfort us, especially for people who are nearing that big step from this life into whatever lays beyond, and I loved hearing about Kyle's late friends visiting and taking care of him.

This review ended up being a lot longer than I meant for it to be, but I really cherished every single page of this book. I never expected Haunted Healthcare to warm my soul so much (though it did give me chills a few times, too!) and I'm so happy that I picked it up. I will absolutely be reading more of Richard Estep's books in the future and very highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys nonfiction about spiritual encounters.

I enjoyed parts of it, and I do believe in ghosts so none of that was my problem. I didn't get along with something in the writing and that last part...felt full of inspiration porn with how it was written and it irritated me to no end.

Spine tingling vignettes of true horror in hospitals and aged care health facilities. Skews heavily towards Hollywood fiction with well known ghost tropes but the engaging accounts make up for it. A minor gripe with the last chapter not fitting the theme but overall a decent collection.

Not what I expected. I thought it was going to be separated into short chapters, each comprising some kind of paranormal encounter, but instead, it's separated into chapters featuring individual people the author knows personally or met while investigating. This wouldn't normally be a problem, but the author spends so much time describing how talented and good and kind that person is before introducing their encounters that it feels like the reader is being buttered up to believe whatever they're going to say. Plus, the fact that a lot of these medical professionals are introduced as psychics, mediums, or religious people who believe in the power of prayer from the get-go in a matter-of-fact way really bothered me because I wanted a collection of experiences from a large variety of healthcare workers, including serious skeptics.

Unfortunately, this book instead focuses on individuals who have usually seen lots of paranormal activity in their lives - not the stories themselves - and so it usually explains more than one event for each person introduced, which seriously makes me doubt the veracity of these occurrences. Do shocking, one-in-a-lifetime sightings really happen so often to people, even if they consider themselves part-time psychics or paranormal investigators?

Most of these occurrences aren't impressive because the events are not very original or compelling on their own without the back story of the often-psychic worker.

Here's an extract below, at 14% of the Kindle edition, about Robbin, a nurse and paranormal investigator herself who also happened to be married to a fellow paranormal investigator:

Stephen was also a paranormal investigator, one who just so happened to be a priest who specialized in handling those cases that were darker and more malevolent than the standard everyday type of haunting. If anybody could help out, even from a distance, it would be him.

With her request made, Robbin went back inside and stood just outside the patient's doorway. Closing her eyes, she began to pray quietly, focusing on the fervent hope that her patient be granted some measure of respite from whatever force it was - whether medical, paranormal, or some degree of both - that afflicted her.

Unbeknownst to Robbin, her husband had managed to read Stephen in a very timely manner. The priest immediately began to offer up prayers for Robbin and her patient from his home in the mountains, while she did the very same thing from right outside the patient's door.

Their combined efforts appear to have worked, and worked quickly. Almost as if a switch had been flipped, the old woman stopped growling and flopped backward onto her pillows."

2 stars because the most interesting parts of the book were actually the discussion/commentary questioning how something could be explained scientifically. DNF'd a little over halfway through because it's not what I was looking for.

I really, really, really wanted to love this, but I just couldn't. A little bit of background info for context: I grew up in a superstitious Mexican household where everyone told Ghost stories and spooky legends. I used to stay up late at night unable to fall asleep from all the spooky stories I was exposed to throughout my childhood and I LOVED it. The older I got and the more educated I became, the more difficult it became to scare me. But I am actively searching for that same goosebump thrill. I prefer stories that have basis in reality, that are difficult to debunk (even by pure skeptics). I like stories that are about shadows out of the corner of your eye rather than the less believable violent entity scenarios. Basically just low, creepy, stories from reputable and oftentimes reluctant witnesses.

I chose Haunted Healthcare because healthcare professionals are educated and extremely logical (sometimes to a fault). I thought that these would make a more reliable story base because these people tend to be hardcore skeptics. I was very optimistic as I read the author's introduction as he said basically the same thing, that healthcare professionals tend to be skeptical people but that there are just incidents that are unexplainable. Much to my disappointment this just ended up being story after story of healthcare professionals that were not only not skeptics, but also self-proclaimed psychic mediums. (Side note:I'm not saying psychic mediums don't exist, but I'm also not saying that they do. I remain open to the possibility, it just seems very unlikely. ) I chose this collection because I thought I would get a recounting of incidents that creeped doctors or nurses out to the point they begin to doubt their logical minds (if only for just a few brief moments while they're scared) enough to think, "Could it be a ghost?" Sadly, what I got were a bunch of hobby paranormal investigators who happen to be healthcare professionals. More than that, I felt like there were moments in the book that were interpreted as paranormal when they obviously could be rationalized. For example, without giving too much away, near the beginning of the collection they describe the erratic and occasionally violent behavior of one of the patients and strongly insinuate it was an inhumane entity. The author goes on to say (and I'm paraphrasing), "well some people would say this behavior is consistent with syndrome x but the atmosphere was too oppressive to be that." Logical explanation? Yes! But going to totally dismiss it. It was a huge turn off.

Two stars because I think the stories are well written and a cohesive collection, but unfortunately for me, it did not live up to its promise. I think that this book would be very enjoyable for people who can suspend all disbelief, but not for people like me.

As a night shift nurse who fancies herself as a bit of a sensitive when it comes to the spirit world, I had to read Haunted Healthcare: Medical Professionals and Patients Share their Encounters with the Paranormal by Richard Estep. I mean, really, hospitals and nursing homes are the ideal settings for a good old-fashioned haunt, and who else would be there to witness these hauntings, but those of us holding the hands of the dying? Deaths occur so frequently in these places--often unexpectedly and quite traumatically and there are just so many highly charged emotions among the sick and grieving that it is no wonder that some of these poor souls tend to linger (which is really sad when you think about it). I thoroughly enjoyed the stories Estep compiled from the healthcare professionals he interviewed, because they were so eerily similar to things I've encountered myself (minus a few that were way more extreme than anything that has ever happened to me.) I love a good ghost story and Estep was totally speaking my language.

Ohhhh the stories I could tell...

Chilly stories about firsthand accounts of the paranormal from hospital and home healthcare staff. Very entertaining and fun, and actually fairly informative on life as medical personnel.
I was raised by ER staff and I hope to find a home in a hospital staff some day.

Interesting stories from inside health facilities. It would make sense that some would see something here, given that many deaths happen. Richard Estep has a great way of recording these stories, and sharing with the public.

As a former CNA and Emergency Responder, I can tell you stories. Growing up in a haunted house and then being on a paranormal investigation team, I can tell you these stories are eerily familiar with what I've seen and the stories others have told me. This is a great first compilation of medical haunted stories.

Yet another wonderful book from Richard, I enjoy his experiences and those of others in and out of the paranormal community. If you hold any interest in the ghostly side of the medical field, this is one book that should hold a place in your personal library. A solid 4 stars from me.

Enjoyed the book

I enjoyed the book. I worked in the medical field many years ago and am aware of such stories and have even come across of such during my time. A good read for anyone interested in such topics.

I read half this book and I’m not about to finish. The summary and even the cover of this book makes it seems like there would be scary stories. There are none. This comes off as bad fiction instead of true accounts from the medical profession. As a seasoned nurse myself, I can believe the complete lack of response from the nurses in this book. I don’t care how long I’ve been doing this, if a white tunnel opened up in front of me and my dead patient and his equally dead mother walk through it, I’m going to piss my pants, not shrug it off and keep working.

A lot where sweet stories of people dying and crossing over. Nothing at all terrifying. When I find myself skipping whole sections, it’s time to put the book down.

Great read!

I have recently fallen out of the habit of reviewing books, mainly because most self-published authors throw out thrown together material, full of grammatical and spelling errors. They are undeserving of a review of any kind.

Not so with this book.

First, let me congratulate Mr Estep for taking the time to deliver a well thought out, entertaining book. It was so refreshing not to have to correct grammar and spelling as I navigated through the stories. You take pride in your work, and it shows. Thank you!

The stories in this book are fresh and spooky. I loved every moment of it, and look forward to reading more by Mr Estep.

I loved this book! I kept getting it as a recommendation on my pinterest and made sure to pin it in my library folder. I've been studying the supernatural and the paranormal for a very long time. I had to get surgery last July and the hospital that I had my surgery gave off a very haunted atmosphere and feeling. My mom had lost my older sister Emily there giving birth and I kind of hope she's around haunting the place, making her little sister who is living and does her best to haunt the living with her appearance and beliefs, very proud. Being occult I knew there was much sinister things there than ghosts, but everyone sat in their chairs, ignoring the intense atmosphere around us. Making me smile and laugh, because I know the signs of "Don't Panic!" or ignore it and it will go away.
I was just about to ask the doctors, while they were putting me under, if the hospital was haunted. And I received my answers by passing right out. The nurse was ready to have a conversation with me while the medicine worked, she told me it could take sometime but all I saw was blackness and then I was waking up in another room and my surgery had been successful. I wasn't frightened, I'm never frightened of these things that I call my family and friends, and I know my sister Emily is amongst them (she's always haunted our home, in a beautiful way.)
I was also born in a hospital that was haunted and is now condemned because of it. So the topic truly fascinates me.
I've been doing spiritual lessons for 6 years now with my Gods, Devils, and Spirit guides, and this book actually came up as a spiritual lesson for me. I loved it, the validation was there that I was not alone in my feelings and experiences. It truly does happen, and Richard explains why very accurately. A hospital is a place where both life and death come together, life and death are manifested there all of the time, it's only natural, he explains that hospitals carry a lot of ghosts.
His books are of accounts of others experiences in hospitals. There's even a tv series on this, which I have watched a bit of in my spare time and it was truly a great show. The book is fantastic and I am very proud of Richard for his intelligence that he has constructed on his own by researching and actually delving into the world of the supernatural himself by investigating the paranormal first hand. He's also a life saver, working as a paramedic, thank you so much Richard for your service! He talks about some of his personal beliefs but the books are really about what other people have gone through. His writing is accurate and to the point, with great descriptions that get inside your mind to reveal what the person went through. He's a very talented writer and someone I've had the privilege of getting to know because he shows his fans such kindness!
I hope that everyone gets their copy of haunted healthcare!

For All Those Who Wish They'd See a Ghost

The author, as the title says, is focused on haunted hospitals in this book. He's written other books, so check them out of you hate hospitals, ambulances and hospices. From a possibly possessed elderly lady who growls at those who are trying to care for her to the little girl who is still skipping through the halls of the hospital where she died a century ago, the stories are well told and straightforward in presentation. There are shades and shadows, a man standing over his body and sobbing, a mother and grandmother standing at the bedside of a sick girl, and the spirits of children visiting a dying boy who had spent time comforting them as they died. Some of these stories are positively eerie. Some give great comfort. All point to the continuation of our life past the death of our bodies. All benefit, I might add, from the simple grace of the author, who reminds us several times in the course of the book that while he has opinions about what happens to us when we die, he doesn't KNOW what happens, and none of these stories TELL us anything beyond the evidence that death is not the end.
I found the book compelling, entertaining and too short. And WAY above most such books in every way.

4,5 / 5

I developed an interest in the paranormal around the age of 9, so I've read a lot of books dealing with the paranormal in all its forms.

Richard Estep's book brings a new approach to the subject, as he tries, as he puts it, to sort things out before concluding that paranormal activity is possible. As a paramedic and paranormal enthusiast himself (without being biased), he has collected testimonies from a dozen people - nurses, orderlies, intensive care workers - who have experienced paranormal encounters or events.
I have to say that I was captivated by this book from beginning to end.

Not only does the author have a gift for telling the stories as they were told to her, but also for providing a perspective on some people's perceptions and sensitivities when it comes to the paranormal.

Most of the stories are gentler, though some are downright frightening. From the U.S. to the U.K. to Australia, the stories are each more interesting than the last. The author shows great sensitivity, particularly in the face of death, mental illness and disease, and is also very respectful.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the paranormal stories of hospitals, hospices and healthcare centers.

An Affirmation of Life Both Here and Beyond

This is a beautiful, touching account of medical professionals who have experienced paranormal phenomena. Far from being an exploitive or depressing book, this work is a positive affirmation of life, both here and beyond. The author also works in the healthcare industry and brings his unique perspective. It is difficult to work in that industry and deal with sickness and death. It takes a special person to have the strength to handle the challenges. I was a caregiver to my late mother for over 25 years and it is not easy. The tales found here are surprising, touching, frightening and wonderful. Kyle's story is quite moving as well. I give fair warning, have tissues handy, you will need them. I will definitely be reading more from this author. A wonderful book.

More unbelievable than the actual ghost stories, were the details of medical facilities , professional attitudes and behaviours of staff and patients. Not one convincing word was uttered in this book, and the writing style was very poor; patronising and glib. It often read like an inspirational tutorial, sprouted from the mouth of a self glorifying lay- preacher to a captive audience.
Possibly this was the worst book I’ve ever read.
Disappointing really, because such a title held a promise of eerie and unexplained events from witness accounts of medical professionals who usually deal in scientific and research led attitudes, but caught off guard. Instead it read like a group of like-minded friends spinning grandiose cliche’s that simply feed their shared hobby, and second income.

Haunted Healthcare by Richard Estep (who is a paranormal investigator, author, and paramedic), is packed with spooky stories from doctors, nurses, and patients who’ve experienced weird, unexplainable things in hospitals. Think ghostly figures, strange noises, and comforting spirits—real-life paranormal encounters where life and death meet.

➡️ This is a well-written collection of real-life paranormal encounters from medical professionals. The author does a great job blending his own experiences with the eerie stories shared by others, and it’s an easy read. Some of the stories are genuinely fascinating, offering a unique glimpse into the supernatural side of healthcare. If you’re into ghost stories with a real-world twist, it’s definitely worth checking out.

One of the Best

This was one of the better books from Richard! Not nearly as many misspelled words or mistakes that I have found in the other six (6) books of his I have read. (Thank goodness!) This investigation and subsequent book isn't one that will make you run out and buy your own REM POD or IR camera, but it does address the fact that just because a location is haunted doesn't mean that everyone who visits that location will have the exact same experience as everyone else.

Most of all, the final chapter brought peace and understanding at a time I desperately needed it. Richard, thanks for sharing the gift of THE YETI!

Worth the read!

This is one of the best paranormal books I've had the pleasure to read. Paranormal stories from medical professionals tend to be some of my favorites because I know they have a lot to lose telling them and little to gain by making them up. Some of the stories in this book are truly frightening while others are heartwarming. The last story will bring tears to your eyes while at the same time hope to your heart, and a little bit of a chill to your spine. You'll have to read it to see what I mean. Highly recommend this book!

Fantastic read

I've been a paranormal investigator now for around 30years.... And found a lot of books like this to be just another book of stories already told... Not this one though..... A fantastic collection of witness accounts written so well that not only do you find yourself there but also are taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.. Richard Estep is a great asset to the paranormal field and obviously a great asset in the medical field he chose to work in.... I salute you sir and thank you.

An interesting book

Not what I was expecting. This is a lot of “telling” and a lot less “showing” type of book. Which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just not what I expected. The stories themselves are interesting and a couple completely creepy. The writing style leaves a little for me to desire but it isn’t bad by any means. Overall a interesting way to pass the time. Especially as a health care worker in the Denver Metro area. I know some of these locations, which makes the story a bit more interesting.

A Great Find!

I couldn't put this books down over the 2 nights I read it! Very realistic and relatable. I find it all very believable as I have been a nurse for many years also. I just thought the cover looked scary when the actual experiences were really not so terrifying. I appreciate the author's honesty. I also appreciated his story of Kyle. I will be downloading the second book tonight!! Thank you, Richard!

I really wanted to try this book because I wasn’t familiar with the author and audible had a variety of paranormal books so why not give it a shot. Some of the stories in this book were bone chilling while others I’ve heard versions of before. I can’t imagine what it’s like to work at a hospital during odd hours and experiencing this strange things but I’m happy this author did his research. Would I read this book again? No would I recommend it to anyone? Maybe not
