To save his best friend, Alonzo must return to a life he thought he left behind.

When his plan to locate Aria fails, Alonzo Gonzales must join forces with the enemy if he ever wants to see his sister again. A sinister organization holds her captive, and the only way to break her out is with help from the inside.

Chandra Singh is a woman on a mission. She can’t let anything get in the way of rescuing aberrations from those who would exploit them for their abilities. Not even someone as irresistibly distracting as Alonzo.

Alonzo is willing to do anything to save his sister—even double-cross the woman he can’t get out of his head. The clock is set, and if Alonzo can’t betray his heart, Aria will pay with her life.

This is the second book in a new series by Madeline Freeman. The first book was a futuristic version of The Little Mermaid- and the second book is related to Aladdin. The author has a very interesting storyline going with a well developed setting, world and society as well as interesting characters who are unaware of some of the issues going on in their society.
As I’ve come to expect from this author, the story is well written, organized, easy to follow and holds your interest. The story and characters are enjoyable, creative and relatable. While the main character is the person you are rooting for, he is not perfect and makes his share of mistakes throughout this book. In my opinion, this is is part of what makes her writing ideal for young adult readers, while the hero is still young,, you are rooting for him to be successful even though you may disagree with choices that he makes. does impressive things but makes mistakes and has some growing up to do.
So now we see how the story lines from Books 1and 2 areconverging... I anxiously await the next book. Who can they trust? How can they find their way through the seemingly impossible maze of tasks ahead of them? Thanks for the wonderful story and I’m so glad I discovered this author. I’ve read everything she has written and am excited to see what’s coming next.

Truly unique post-apocalyptic take on the Aladdin story. I loved all the creative nods to the essence of the traditional story completely re-imagined in this world full of high tech, conspiracies, secret organizations and aberrations - or anomalies. Fast-paced, action filled read that gives a new perspective to Aria's companions as well as introduces a whole new set of players to this complex story. The romance was cute and feisty in this one, lots of natural growth, and took a backseat to the action and plot line.

I really enjoyed Speechless - and it ended on such a cliffhanger! I wasn't sure how the story was going to continue with a new main character - I was concerned Aria's story would take a back seat to Alonzo's but truly the two stories were masterfully drawn together.

This is the second book in the Unfortunate Souls series, each book has a full story arc but is also part of a building overarching plot - so the major conflict in this book was solved, but another was left open and the larger overarching conflict is still building.

I was not expecting all the twists and turns in this book, but Fearless is a fantastic continuation in the Unfortunate Souls series! There are a lot more characters and story-lines to follow in this second book. Aria is till being blackmailed by the organization she was forced to help in book 1. Alonzo is desperately trying to not only help Aria, but also his sisters back home keep their restaurant while also keeping himself out of trouble. He doesn't do the keeping himself out of trouble part very well though. We are introduced to an new organization whose soul purpose is to help and save captured people with special abilities, or aberrations. And lets not forget Enrique and all those still trying to survive on Mars. With most of these groups on Earth discovering that they all are on the same mission to save (or destroy) a weapon meant to identify all the aberrations in the world, it is a fight to get to this weapon first. I am so excited to find out what is next in book 3!

Interesting

Aria has been kept by the Dolus order they are collecting aberrations with specific skills to be used when needed. Threatening her family ensures she stays. But Alonzo is home....for a while. He goes on a secret mission with one of the people who has Aria in search of the "asset" . No one knows what this is. At least not at first.

Aria is sent on her own mission with the understanding that if she messes up, someone she loves will pay for it. That's a motivator!! It's an interesting story with a bit of action. Want to know more??

This book took me on quite a ride. Between the many different point of view characters and everything going on with the plot, this book wove a massive web of intrigue and entanglement. My heart was racing more often than not and while the conclusion was about as satisfying as an unfinished series can be, I'm anxious to start the next book and see what else will happen.

He has tried everything to find his missing sister. He will need help from an enemy to find and free her. One big issue the enemy is a female and he thinks this will complicated if he calls for them. Can they find his sister? Can he betray them to save his sister? Can he get both? Follow him to find out

Good

I am enjoying this series much more than I thought I would. The story is a unique retelling of several stories.

Very inventive, it's well written for the genre. It is what it aims to be. It reads decent for an adult reader, i wish I'd read it 20 years ago.

As opposed to the first book in the series, this one has very little to do with the supposed human colony on Mars. There are a few scenes there, but by and large this book is about aberrations living on Earth. The main character here is Alonzo, and his main goal is to find and rescue his sister, Aria (the MC of the first book in the series). It is also a retelling of Aladdin, with Alonzo taking the role of Aladdin and a new character, Chandra, taking the character of Jasmin. Alonzo is given the task of infiltrating an organization and locating a particular asset using hacking abilities borrowed from another aberration. Once he does this, he will be given the information he needs to be able to rescue Aria. Meanwhile Aria is still held captive and forced to use her abilities in service of an organization that she doesn't really agree with.

This was a good, fast-paced story. I enjoyed learning a bit more about how this world works and what sort of lives aberrations have. I also liked the new characters that were introduced as part of Chandra's storyline. Still intrigued enough to keep reading this series.

Another great book for the series. I enjoyed following the various characters and find the overarcing plot engaging. I can't wait for the third book. My biggest quibble was that this didn't stand out to me as having strong "Aladdin/Arabian Nights" themes. I think calling it a retelling was (unnecessary) a stretch and I typically like something to BE a retelling and have several obvious parallels if it's going to call itself a retelling. I didn't think this had that but I also don't think it needed to make the claim since it was a really strong book and didn't need a "this is a retelling" hook.

This book kept me entertained throughout. I loved seeing the characters again, and am a sucker for anything Little Mermaid (within the realm of it actually resembling the original). It was great seeing more of Alonzo and the romance between him and [redacted]. It's done really well, and is an easy read. The author keeps it clean, and the story is engaging and had me on the edge of my seat. Truly loving this series, and I can't wait for the rest of it.
