This is a short novella – around one-hundred pages.
Viscount Whitmore, Brigham Clarke grew up next door to Miss Meloria Steele, the daughter of the Baron and Baroness Montford. He had loved her all of her life and now he was marrying her. Mellie also loved Brigham. Sounds like they already have their Happily Ever After doesn’t it. Well, that isn’t the case. You see – neither of them has told the other that they love them and each feels as if they are using the other for selfish purposes. He feels that he used the death of her father and the fact that she and her mother were left impoverished to get her to marry him. She feels that he only married her so that he could save her by providing her with a home and care for her ill mother. They were married on the same day that they buried her father. He left for London that same afternoon without consummating the marriage.
For five years Brigham lived in London and Mellie lived at Hockecliffe Manor. The marriage remained unconsummated and Brigham only visited Mellie once per year at Christmastide and he only stayed for a day or two. In all that time, they still loved each other, but they never told each other. You’ll find that most of this book is taken up with self-introspection and each of them repeating all the reasons why the other doesn’t and shouldn’t love them.
Brigham has spent five years as a reformer in Parliament. He’s constantly meeting people and working for their votes. However, his bill for the reform of the coal industry has just gone down in defeat – another way he’s let Mellie down – and it is time for his Christmastide visit. He wonders how this visit will go since Mellie’s mother passed away just five months ago and he didn’t even get home for the funeral.
For this Christmastide, each of them has come to the determination that it is time for things to change. She has decided to seduce him and provide him with an heir and he has decided he wants to be through with London and come home to live with Mellie. Can she – will she – want that?
They don’t get off to a very good start – can they turn it around and get their HEA?
"I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
Communication, communication, communication. Something that seem to always be an issue in relationships and that is the big hurdle Melloria, “Mellie”, and Brigham have in their life together. They each think they know how the other is feeling, thinking and seeing their marriage. They have allowed years to add to the confusion. This is a warm story of two people that have the best foundation for a HEA, love for each other, but must reach down deep and find the courage to bring it forward.
The reasons behind their confusion are well founded and compelling. The bad health and death(s) of loved ones is no small thing to deal with. “One is not always blessed with choosing their fate or path in life.” (location 810) Mellie is dealt a hard task and bares up incredibly well. While dealing with her reality she struggles to not be upset with the things she finds lacking in her marriage. She is a strong and resilient woman who I was able to relate to so strongly!
When they do finally find their courage, it is charming and heart warming to see them realize the foundation is strong and they can make their HEA a reality. Thank you for a lovely after noon, Ms. McKnight.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
One word has the power to upset the course of everything we hold dear. The fact that so much emotion resides with a four letter word is hard to believe, but so very true. Love is a word we all know, and emotion we all feel, but still find hard to understand. Bedded Under the Christmastide Moon is a steamy tale of misunderstandings, broken hearts and second chances. Brigham and Mellie are at the precipice of happiness and heartache, but too afraid to tumble into the abyss. Will they open their eyes and listen to their hearts or will they give up before it gets too real? At the core of a Christina McKnight tale are feelings. Whether we love, hurt, fall down or get back up, we have a reaction to the experience. McKnight knows how to get a reaction.
Bedded Under the Christmastide Moon by Christina McKnight is a delightful Holiday Regency Romance. A short novella, approximately 100 pages. I read it in one setting. The characters are charming. The storyline was a quick, simple romance, with little intimacy, the buildup to the couples relationship, I felt needed more. Second chances, misunderstandings and broken hearts, Christmas surprises and finding a HEA, are the essence of BEDDED UNDER THE CHRISTMASTIDE MOON. A nice holiday read. I do look forward
"I voluntarily received a complimentary copy, however, these are my honest opinions. I was in no way required nor compensated to write a review."
Brigham Clarke, Viscount Whitmore, has endlessly championed those less fortunate than himself by introducing social reform bills in London all while his wife of five years, Melloria, remains alone in Hertfordshire. When Brigham arrives for the Christmastide holiday, Melloria has only one thing on her mind the seduction of her husband. Heart warming & so very enjoyable, I love the author’s books & haven’t been disappointed with any of her books. There was something so endearing about Brigham, a hero with glasses doesn’t sound sexy but Brigham was very sexy. Melly was a woman with a mission even if she wasn’t sure how to go about it. I read this story of misunderstandings in one session
Bedded Under The Christmastide Moon was about Miss Melloria "Mellie" Steele, the only daughter of Baroness Montfort and the late Baron Monfort, and Lord Brigham Clarke, Viscount Whitmore, her childhood friend. Having been forced to marry Lord Whitmore two weeks after having laid her father to rest in the church cemetery in order to prevent her and her ailing mother from being forced into poverty by her late father's distant relative who had inherited the man's title, Melloria was not happy. Though she had secretly loved Brigham for as long as she could remember, she did not believe he returned her feelings and, therefore, felt as though she were forcing him into a marriage of convenience against his will. For his part, Brigham had loved Melloria all his life, though he, too, did not believe she returned his feelings. So they made a deal. In return for marrying him, she and her mother would have a home and medical care for her mother, and her agreement to see him once a year when he would return to his country estate for the holidays. Neither one had made any declarations of love, commitment, or devotion to the other. The marriage was to be in name only. Immediately after the wedding, Brigham departed for London, leaving Mellie and her mother to settle into his country home where they would permanently reside. Brigham, with his reform bills and duties to Parliament being of utmost importance, would reside at his London townhouse alone. Just over five years later, things had not changed, except the death of her mother five months earlier. With Brigham's impending visit and the fact his sister and her family would not be joining them for the holidays because she was close to giving birth to a fourth child, Mellie was not looking forward to spending the season alone with him. Though she believed her childhood love for Brigham no longer existed, crushed by grief and loss, Mellie planned to seduce her husband because she believed she owed him for stealing away his chance at love when they married. So she believed it was time to give him the heir he deserved...or to step aside and let him find another wife to do so, hoping that either way she would repay him for his lost chance at love. Upon arriving at his country estate, Brigham was taken by surprise to see a holiday wreath adorning the front of the manor. It had been years since he had seen any decorations of such in his home. Weary from his trip, and the fact that his latest reform bill he'd introduced to Parliament had failed, he was not in a festive mood. He hadn't even been able to attend his mother-in-law's funeral due to his need to work on the bill, much to his disappointment. There was so much guilt stemming from both Mellie and Brigham that it overwhelmed the entire story. Neither spoke of their true feelings for the other and, therefore they both suffered in silence because of it. The immaturity of these two characters was so evident that it diminished the love the two of them shared. For them to have both gone over five years with a hidden love for the other, both too afraid to speak of it, was disappointing. All of their years of issues were of their own making because they were both too cowardly to speak what was in their hearts. This did not make for a good romance novel, no matter how it ended. Though there was a HEA, it was sad how long it took them to find it. The entire story was more depressing than it was enjoyable, so it did not earn a five-star rating. There was way too little happiness, passion, or anything to like about it.
For years, Lady Melloria Whitmore has believed her childhood best friend and secret love Brigham Clarke agreed to marry her out of a sense of duty. Knowing how important Brigham’s work with Parliament is to him, she agrees to see him once a year, when he returns to his country estate for the holidays. This Christmas, Mellie vows to give Brigham the one thing he has always wanted: an heir. For one night, she’ll share his bed, and she’ll have that memory of passion to get her through the long winter nights without him.
IS ABOUT TO BECOME A MARRIAGE OF LOVE.
Except Brigham doesn’t want just one night—he wants forever. He’s loved Mellie all his life, and making her his Viscountess Whitmore was his dream. He just never thought Mellie returned his feelings. So when Mellie begins her seduction under the Christmastide moon, Brigham receives the best gift of all: his wife’s love.
My Thoughts:
This is another enjoyable quick read for the coming holidays by Christina McKnight I read this novella in a single sitting and the only thing I can find wrong with it is a lack of build up of the characters.
We find them suddenly married as a matter of convenience when Brigham asks Mellie to marry him after her father's death left them destitute and without a home. They have become homeless when a distant relative inherits and literally throws Mellie and her mother out.
Always in love with his neighbor Brigham asks Mellie to marry him presumably to give Mellie and her mother a roof over their heads.
Mellie has always loved Brigham and of course she answers yes.
After keeping his distance for many years Brigham arrives home for Christmastide as usual but now he intends to stay.
Will a revealing of their true feelings under the Christmastide moon be enough to save this marriage of convenience or will it end then and there?
I gave this short sweet romance 4.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 2.0 of 5.0 flames. This is a sweet holiday romance story with minimal intimacy.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this title to read and review. This in no way affected my opinion of this novella which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
The book was more angst-filled than I expected. That's not exactly a bad thing, but I wish we had spent more time on how the two main characters were fairing after they decided to have a marriage based on love rather than guilt. Once again communication is the key and our characters should have realized that sooner. A lot of conflict could have been avoided if they had a serious talk about the reasons they entered the marriage in the first place.
What I liked about this story was the detail the author used when it came to the clothes the characters were wearing. For example, I don't picture the heroines in historical romances wearing gloves, but in this book, they are mentioned, so for the next few months, I will have that in mind when I read a historical novel.
The book is short and for me, it's something one might read in between other books or when they need a fast happy ending. Reading it will take about an hour or two, so you can sit down one afternoon and finish it.
Author Christina McKnight does a superb job of untangling the web these two get caught in and as the story unfolds the reader will be swept into the drama of miscommunication, wants, desires, assumptions and love. It's about not saying what you really feel or clearly stating what you mean because you are afraid of the outcome.
Both Brigham and Mellie are equally at fault. While I understand Mellie's part in it due to her situation I would have liked Brigham to have been more aggressive in changing things he wanted changed.
But all men aren't aggressive and forceful, so it was fun to watch these two dance around each other as they tried to make changes in their marriage arrangement.
Melly has always loved Brigham, the Viscount next door. For his part, Brigham always planned to offer for Melly's hand. When a sudden death forces his hand, they find themselves in what each thinks is a marriage of convenience.
Yep, they both spend five years pining over their spouse.
That might be the entirety of the plot, but this novella packs a lot of angst into so few pages. You know they are meant to be together if only one of them could spit it out. Both Melly and Brigham are well fleshed out for such a short book and I love how the author romanticised Brigham's glasses. True love really is blind!
For a short read with angst and passion, pick up this one - though be warned, the last scene left me thinking "that can't be comfortable..."
Ah this is my first book with Christmas as a backdrop for the 2018 year. It was a short and sweet read, with just enough steam to suit the title.
I love novellas that you can read quickly over an hour or so, and this was one of them. It was satisfying and absolutely perfect.
Mellie and Brigham are childhood friends that married to help take care of Mellie's aging mother. It was a marriage of convenience at the time. Now that Mellie's mother has passed on, Mellie wants to change things.
I love that both had feelings for each other, but wouldn't show them to one another right away though it was obviously causing both of them pain. The two of them have a struggle coming together after years of living apart, except for a few days over the Christmas holidays.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and want to read more of Christina's books in the future.
Oh my god what an extraordinary story. It is so completely well written and thought through. It is a short novella so my review will be short too.
This is Braham and Mellie's story. They have been married for years but they have not yet to consummate the marriage . You see they both think the other dose not love them and they are so wrong. They both have plans to seduce each other but when things get misunderstood they may never fix it. Making this possibly their last Christmastide to gather. Hope they can fix it, just read to find out.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.
I really wanted to love this book, but I could only like it a lot. Mellie and Brigham had been starting to fall in love with a stolen kiss between them before her father passed away. Their families were close, spending Christmas's and holiday's together, so there was no reason for them not to admit their feelings even with the funeral. There was especially no reason for them not to TALK for 5 years, even with her mother's illness. When they have both decided to fess up their feelings, misunderstandings abound! I do admit, my most unbelievable part of the story was the ending. I don't care how much you want someone, if it's THAT cold for those clothing needs, it's not going to work!
I read this story as part of the Anthology, 'A Scandalous Christmas' and this is my voluntary and unbiased review of it. This novella is so chock-a-block full of raw emotion and romance that there were times I wanted to kick Brigham on his butt and to tell him 'Wake-up, Man!' nice and loud and clear, but he isn't real, fortunately or unfortunately and he is merely a figment of the author's imagination. Eventually he saw the light and thank goodness for that! You need to know that the way Christina McKnight has written this story had me so engrossed and involved that when I look back I can't help but laugh at myself. Wow! This novella just has to be read!
Melloria Whitmore and her best friend wed after her father passed and her mother was also slowly wasting away! Melloria aka Mell always thought that Viscount Whitmore , Brigham Clarke have known each other their whole lives! All they had to do was have a conversation! Yes Mell was buried in the countryside by her own choice while her handsome husband was fighting for Justice and laws to be reformed in London! This was by her choice but I blame them both for the wasted time! After Mell’s mother passed they finally speak and have what should have been an easy conversation but it was not! The ending was anticlimactic and much too cold literally!
Were Brigham and, particularly, Mellie nymphomaniacs? They get aroused by just looking at each other (even if the other wasn't looking) and by touch in spite of having layers of clothes on.
Brigham was so melodramatic that I wonder if he was really a man.
Mellie was very easy. A few confession and a gift and she was ready to lie down and give herself to her husband.
I liked the writing style but the characters became annoying after a while. The constant second-guessing and hurt feelings due to lack of communication drove me crazy. Both characters seemed cowardly, but Brigham more so than Mellie. I had difficulty imagining him as at all attractive due to his personality.
Making love on Christmas Eve, outdoors, in England was far-fetched and ridiculous. For two people who had managed to tamp down on their desire for one another for over five years, it was silly to think they couldn’t wait a little bit longer to get into the warm house.
This is a very well written short novella that is filled with angst, misunderstandings, lack of communication, etc., but....after 5 years of only seeing each other for a few days during the holidays after their rushed marriage of convenience, Mellie finally decides to seduce Brigham and that's when the fun begins!
Mellie has loved her childhood friend most of her life but feels guilty when he offers (and she accepts) a marriage of convenience when her ill mother and herself are ejected from their home after the death of her father. Rather than marriage leading to a closer relationship, they lead separate lives. Can Mellie find the strength this Christmas to change the dynamic?
A story of mistaken ideas and lonely hurt people who finally reach out and find the love that they have needed, but failed to reach for out of fear. A lovely story.
I love the marriage of convenience theme. That's how I found this little novella. I have to confess, the half hour it took for me to read this was one of the longest of my life. I skipped many pages because I simply couldn't bear to read the never-ending lamentations and stupid misunderstandings... I found the hero weak and melodramatic. The hero and heroine didn't behave like childhood friends who had been slowly but steadily falling in love before family misfortune had struck, as the author kept telling us. I just saw them as bad actors in a bad and extremely boring melodramatic play...
