Lyman Frank Baum was an American author best known for his children's fantasy books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, part of a series. In addition to the 14 Oz books, Baum penned 41 other novels (not including four lost, unpublished novels), 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema. Born and raised in Chittenango, New York, Baum moved west after an unsuccessful stint as a theater producer and playwright. He and his wife opened a store in South Dakota and he edited and published a newspaper. They then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a newspaper reporter and published children's literature, coming out with the first Oz book in 1900. While continuing his writing, among his final projects he sought to establish a film studio focused on children's films in Los Angeles, California. His works anticipated such later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk and action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane's Nieces at Work).
I Finished the Wizard of Oz and are nog well underway with the first sequel The marvelous Land of Oz Which is magical and perhaps more amazing as it is new territory for me, Baum had a truly amazing imagenation the first book from 1900 and the second one from 1904, with briljant illustrations. This is a reprint from the original first two books from Oz series the first containing the original story which was made famous by the Garland movie, and me like everybody else was captured by the vision Hollywod gave us. My kids included. The book is different from the movie even the major storylines were well used. It is in essence a childrens' tale and actually a pretty easy and fast read. The second book is devoid from Dorothy even if the Scarecrow and Tin Man play a part in this tale about a boy who ran away from home and walks into a female uprising against the patriarchy in this fairytale country. And is also accompanied by the original drawing from its original release.
This two for one book is a welcome addition to my collection and both books were wonderfully written and should be read by children today when they grow up.
The first shock was when Dorothy defeats the Wicked Witch of the West...and the story keeps going. It's amazing how much the movie dominates awareness of the series.
Baum prefaces Wizard with a curious introduction stating that it was time to strip fairy tales of their moral lessons and their gruesomeness, and to create new ones solely for light entertainment.
I read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in just 10 days! It was really a fantastic book. It features the original illustrations in black and white and also coloured illustrations. I would advise Reading chapters 8,9 and10 in one day before you read the wonderful Emerald City of Oz or The search for the wicked witch as those two chapters are quite long compared to all the others. I read the first three chapters in one day. All in all all a wonderful adventure story. As for The Marvelous Land of Oz (the sequal L. Frank baum wrote 4 years later)... not a very interesting book. It was a lot of the time very dragged out. I kept waiting for the fun part to come but it didn't. After 5-days of reading it I stopped. If other people want to give it a chance fine. I however would not recommend it. The second book gets only one star. The first book however gets 10 out of 10👍😊. I got this book in the bookshop called chapters in Ireland. They have lots of interesting books.
I got this book on my 6th birthday and have treasured it ever since. I hadn’t actually read it in years, but since I’ve been too ill to read serious novels lately, I decided it would be a good time to revisit this. I still love the first book so much, especially because it tells of many more adventures than the movie could hold. The second is not quite as good as I remembered. It seems to sag in the middle but still has many entertaining parts. I might try to find the next book online. It would be totally new to me, as my parents never bought me the rest of the series.
I am so glad that I read this classic book to see how it (very much) differs from the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The second book, The Marvelous Land of Oz, did not hold my attention as much. It was interesting to see where some of the characters come from in Return to Oz, but I was not as invested in the story as the first book. Both are an easy read to escape after a long work day.
This is a lovely warm book, it just feels so magical. Dorothy and her newfound friends journey through this magical land. Pip and his newfound friends go on an exhilarating adventure. Just overall amazing, couldn’t recommend more. Age group would be anyone over 1 day old
The first two books of The Wizard of Oz Series completed. A rather fun read, although lacks some substance in parts. It is well worth reading, especially books that go beyond the original movie.
The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite books of all time so this review is definitely biased. If you're the type who likes fairy tales or is a fan of the famous MGM film I would say to give Wizard of Oz a read as well as it's sequels. The benefit of this copy of Oz is that it has both the original story that began it all and it's "Sequel", though it actually isn't about Dorothy. More unique is the manga / anime inspired artwork which makes me say that this is the version of Oz to buy.
This is a weird gripe but I didn't own any Oz books for years because I never liked the artwork. Not that they were bad but the illustrations of prior iterations were not interesting to me. This one however breaths a life into its drawings. And it's kind of surprising how well the anime like artwork fits with Oz and fairy tales in general. Overall everything is drawn very pretty and nice and clean. Expressions are clear on characters and the designs of each one is very cool. I loved Dorothy's design and it was both a homage to classic interpretations of Dorothy but also it's own thing.
My recommendation is to buy this copy of Oz if you ever wish to read the Wizard of Oz books. The only shame is that the rest of the series isn't (yet) released in this same vein, but maybe some day.
I really enjoied this book. It holds very similar plot points to the movie, but they happened in diffrent sequence of events. Overall a great childhood classic that really cute. But I only read The Great Wizard of Oz and not the second book in the series that part of this bind up.
Reread The Wonderful Wizard of Oz-3 stars This is a whimsical story that feels like your on the adventure with the characters. The side characters were amazing, however Dorothy upon reread is an unlikable character, because she is selfish, mean, and cruel to the companions helping her. Dorothy behavior made this book feel tedious.
The Marvelous Land of Oz-2 stars I expected another whimsical adventure, but this time only with the side characters I enjoied from the first novel. However that is not what I received. The side characters I had so enjoied in the first book turned into arrogant, rude, cruel, self-centered, self-righteous dislikable characters joined for the most part equally as dislikable and unpleasant characters. It felt like the whole book was a bunch of petty people one upping each other and insulting. This turned painful towards the end. The only character I liked at all was Jack and he was treated horribly. And the sexism and stereo types was extream.
Both of these children's books are not that well written, but they show children that it pays to be polite and kind to others. Helping friends is very important. Dorothy and her silver slippers defeat bad witches and help her friends. We do have magic within us to help us when it is most needed! The Marvelous Land of Oz is rather silly with silly characters: more bad witches, pumpkins and saw horses which come alive with magic, evil women who do great work, but want to take over the world, and jackdaws who feather their nests with money, which later saves the scarecrow's life, as it were. Again friendship is very important here. Not great, but given the 75th anniversary of the movie, everyone should read the parent and original before seeing the movie again. Not to worry about the flying monkeys. In the book, the monkeys are good!
Both of these books kind of dragged on, to me. Very different from the movies -- both Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz. They were good, but just not the style of writing that I can imagine I would have read, when I was a kid. The TinMan is much more violent than I ever would have expected.
Honestly I didn't much like this group of companions and the intended to be funny stuff, like the disgruntled housewives who overthrow the government so they can pry out the emeralds and make the men cook didn't really amuse.
