Well shit!!!

I am actually scared to pick up the next book Deadly Vows, this ending gives nothing away, it tells you what is coming and it is coming quickly!!!

I love this series with a passion and the characters are so addictive... obviously Lizzie, Belle, Aiden, Ashworth, Eli and Monty are all part of the growing journey and I feel like I know them all!

The great thing about these books is the mysteries (yes plural) keep on coming but you know how they keep happening but still need solved and there is always more than one in each book... whether said mysteries are the same one or separate issues depends on where you are in the series.

I love how Lizzie is developing, I am excited to see what happens with her and also what happens with her and Aiden - all of this remains to be seen.

I am definitely scared to pick up the next book but it has to be done!!!

Highly recommended!!

What the hell? I am so freaking annoyed and frustrated. I hate when series drag on like this with no end in sight. The only reason I stuck with this book is because I wanted to know what Lizzie was and how she dealt with her past. But instead of that being the main plot, there's just too many subplots dragging on. And what the hell's up with the romance with Aiden? I wanted a really strong love and even that's disappointing. I thought, finally, I'd get the truth and showdown but apparently not. What a waste of time.

Delving into the past

This was an odd instalment in the series, because although the murder mystery was very intriguing and had all the hallmarks of a great antagonist, Lizzie and Belle’s secrets have finally run their course and the domestic drama overshadowed the creature hunt this time around.

Now, while I didn’t have a problem with that, it was definitely noticeable - however Keri Arthur has more than compensated for this by revealing more about the whole Clayton fiasco, and in recruiting help and support from multiple sources. On the other hand, Lizzie is also dealing with the likely impermanence of her relationship with Aiden (say it ain’t so!) thanks to his mother making herself known.

A real mixed bag of current plots mixed in with hints of what’s going to happen next. Still loving the characters and the setting of Castle Rock - immediately brings Stephen King to mind - and I can’t wait for the next book which Keri Arthur has just tweeted will be out in June 2020! Woo-hoo!! 🥳

We are getting into the nitty gritty here and I am loving it.

I am so rooting for Adian and Lizzie but I fear it is all in vain. Shifters/witches can have fun no more/no less. Kids don't fare well. But Lizzie's magic is different. Hope springs eternal.

In Wicked Wings Lizzie and gang discover some picked-clean remains, determine there's a shapeshifting demon killing on the reservation and make a deal with a White Lady. On the personal side, Lizzie continues to grow closer to Aiden and learns her past is finally about to catch up with her.
I was forced to admit the one thing—if only to myself ... I hated the man I was married to, and loved the man I could never marry.
I'd thought there would be some confrontation in this installment, but instead there was only more buildup to it. I found I was fine with that though as it allowed Lizzie a chance to reassure herself that those she's grown close to will be there for her no matter what, come what may. The girls are learning more about their abilities and they're ready to face their past head-on. I'm anxious for book 6, 'Deadly Vows' (unknown release date).

Set in Australia, this is the fifth in the Lizzie Grace urban fantasy series revolving around a witch and her human familiar in hiding from their families. It's been two months since Demon's Dance , 4.

My Take
There's been definite growth in Lizzie's character arc, starting with her doubt about her weak abilities, abilities which have grown so much stronger. Of course, Arthur does provide those coincidental events that test Lizzie's powers and expand her knowledge of using them as well as incorporating Belle's abilities. Huh? I wonder how that happened *grin*

Arthur uses a mix of character and action to drive the plot with first person protagonist point-of-view from Lizzie's perspective, so everything we know, see, and hear is with Lizzie present. Well, okay, I suppose Belle too, since the two can read each other's minds.

One of the series conflicts is Aiden unable to marry a non-werewolf...which definitely disqualifies Lizzie. To up Aiden's problems, we finally meet his mother. Shudder. Arthur does sprinkle in the tidbits, the foreshadowing, that might lead our protagonist couple into the ending I'd like. We'll have to see. I hate waiting.

Lizzie has her own series-long conflict: a man she was forced to marry from whom she fled. As for Belle's "conflict" with Monty — I do enjoy their interactions, lol. That boy just won't give up, and I'd be curious to know what his "high-falutin'" parents would think.

Whoaaa, we do find out why no one is allowed into the werewolf compounds. A very practical concern! One that the "adventure" Charlie and his friends have embarked on emphasizes. That mother of his! It's no wonder Charlie is such a feckless idjit.

Whew, this particular demon is just plain nasty...and much too powerful! I do love it when an author sets up the seemingly impossible and then bashes right through it, *more laughter*

I do enjoy this series. Arthur has created a cozy set of characters who settle into this initially hostile setting and has kept me coming back.

The Story
Evil is stalking the reservation, picking men's bones clean...and neatly piling them up. There’s a demon with a taste for human flesh on the reservation, bringing another problem in the form of a White Lady — a ghost who wants her bloody revenge, and demands Belle’s assistance to get it.

And she won’t take no for an answer.

But the greatest threat of all might be the witch who is a magical bloodhound. A witch who’s been sent to the reservation by one Clayton Marlowe…

And Lizzie will have to take the fight out into the open...and attack.

The Characters
Lizzie Grace is a, well, had been, a weak-powered witch from a royal line of witches (she's really Elizabeth Marlowe) who happened to have prophetic dreams, to sense evil, to have a strong gift for psychometry, and who has been infused with the wild magic. Isabelle "Belle" Kent, a telepath and strong spirit talker who has acquired the ability to see and use her talents through Lizzie), is her familiar and best friend. Nell had been Belle's grandmother with a very impressive library of magic books.

The Psychic Café is...
...the business Lizzie and Belle have opened, determined to stop running. Frank is their kitchen hand. Penny is their full-time waitress. Mike is the cook.

Lizzie's mother, Eleanor, is one of the strongest blueblooded witches alive. Julius "Juli" is Lizzie's jerk of an older brother; he has four kids. Cat had been Lizzie and Juli's powerful sister. Lawrence is her jerk of a father, who pushed Lizzie onto Clayton Marlowe, a friend of her dad's and Lizzie's second cousin.

Monty Ashworth is the new reservation witch...and Lizzie's cousin. Eamon is Monty's cat as well as his familiar. Monty's not too keen on Lizzie. Ira Ashworth, the Regional Witch Association representative, is stepping in, again, to help out. Eli, Ira's significant other, is now coaching the local kids' cricket and football teams. Eli also used to be a rally driver in his younger days.

The Faelan Reservation is...
...one of seven werewolf reservations in Australia and the only one in Victoria. The O'Connors are gray wolves. Émigré is a club owned by a vampire.

The Rangers are…
…the police force on the reservation and elected by the elders. Aiden O'Connor is the head ranger, a werewolf, and Lizzie's lover. Tala Sinclair is his second-in-command. Ciara is Aiden's sister and the reservation coroner. Other rangers include Mac, Jaz, Byron, Duke, and Maggie, their dispatcher and a ranger-in-training.

The demanding Karleen Jayne O'Connor is Aiden's mother and a pack alpha; Joseph is his father. Katie had been Aiden's younger sister who died; her soul integrated with a well of wild magic, becoming its guardian. Gabe Watson had been the previous reservation witch and Katie's husband. Dillon is one of Aiden's seven still-living siblings. Mia, a nurse, had been Aiden's previous girlfriend, the lying one. Jude had been/is her husband.

Jaz and Lizzie are becoming friends. Jaz recently married Levi Marin, a barista who is opening his café next week. Rocco Marin is one of the Marin clan alphas. Terrell was in a fight. Jeni was out for a night with one of the Sinclair boys. Sean and Ryanne Marin are Jeni's parents. Jimmy had been a friend of Jeni's. Rene Marin.

"Vita" is a White Lady who makes a bargain with Lizzie and Belle. Aldred had been Vita's son.

Kash is a tech friend of Belle's. Marion Hardwick manages The Red Door, a posh restaurant and has lost her son Joe, an apprentice painter. The clueless Judy Rankin is an idiot who expects freebies, er, a mother who has lost her son, Charlie, who thinks he can do anything he likes. He and his friends really need to work on their orienteering skills. Joseph Banker went missing four days ago. Gerard. Joel drives for the auto club.

Daniela Sarr is a tracer, think of her as a magical bloodhound.

Peak's Point is...
...where the Fitzgerald brothers, witchy carnival tricksters, were left with a "gift" of rats.

The Black Lantern Society is...
...a secret organization intended to right wrongs and bring justice.

Wild magic must always be guarded, as it can draw darker forces to it. Ghosts are souls trapped in this world. Specters are like ghosts, but out for vengeance. An Empusae can take on several forms: an owl-like Strix or a young woman.

The Cover and Title
The initial impression of the cover is of black and reds, for it's the red-haired Lizzie, her long hair curling past her shoulders, standing in profile to us in her black jeans and tank top, her head turned to watch us. Her right arm is bent with pink flames balling up from her hand, the wild magic. More black and a bluish-gray mist represents a night in the reservation's forests. The author's name is in white at the top while the title (also in white) spans Lizzie's knees. The series information is in a minty green at the very bottom.

The title is all about the Empusae, the demons with those Wicked Wings.

Still riveting, still absolutely LOVE the characters and relationships in this series. They are honestly the reason I am loving each book and devouring the series. In this story, Lizzie, Belle and the gang are pretty much a strong family with love and support, fun and danger shared. Aiden and Lizzie are also strong - although the deeper their feelings are (and at this point it is definitely a deep love), the strain of his pack’s (ei: his mother, who is introduced and is NOT happy) expectations and that cloud of an end date, is looming sadly (something I’m really not enjoying).

The only reason this story didn’t rate a full and enthusiastic five stars is the method and callous attitude towards the most gruesome deaths. The villains in this installment not only tear people apart, but eat them and leave their bones… and sometimes their intact heads. Awful to be sure but one of these actually turns out to be a friend of Aiden’s and Lizzie’s. Yet everyone just went on with their days and lives. That just seemed off and incredibly out of character. A little bit of mourning time or lasting effects in the emotions needed to be shown, IMO. As it stood, it really threw me out of the story.

Obviously that one problem didn’t upset me enough not to eat up (ugh, NO pun intended!) the rest of the book and jump right into the next story, though! *gosh I love it when we can binge!*

Very interesting creature/villain I'd never seen before, but they called her a bitch over 20 times and that got a little tiring. Like "Let's go get this bitch" and "That bitch will rue the day" just... a lot. But I'm excited to read the next one because a longtime threat from the past will finally show up.

Hmmmmm... I still think the crimes are awesome and lead the story (just like Keri intended) because the books literally start and end with them. The entire thing must require so much research. I would like to clarify my appreciation for such grunt work.

BUT the relationship of Aiden and Lizzy is taking a toll on me. Despite the morsel at the end thrown in the form of Clayton, I would have liked a direction for this We-care-deeply-for-each-other-but-we-both-know-this-can't-lead-anywhere tirade. Enjoy a good relationship while you can is all well and good, but for me as a reader it's a loose thread for the fifth book now.

Just saying I would like the resolution...even better if the thread is tied in a knot. (I jest)

I felt like much of what happened in this book was overshadowed by what Liz and Belle found out, a blast from the past, one who has all the reason in the world to hurt these two so very much. Sure the demons skinning people were horrible and it was tough for them all to track them down and kill them. But the bigger threat coming this way is much more interesting, making me wish I had the next book in my hands now. It will be intriguing to see how Liz and Belle fight back, because fight they will, probably for their very lives.

I like the story. I like the adventure, I like Lizzie, I like Belle, I like Aiden, I like Monty, I like all the peeps. I don't like that we are reminded constantly that the relationship between Lizzie and Aiden is temporary, blah, blah, blah over and over. In. Every. Stinking. Book. Lizzie says she's alright with it, but trust me. If it bothers you so much all the time then you are not ok. I've had problems with Arthur's written relationships before and it was the reason I actually dropped one of her series. I just hope this one is not headed in that same direction.

3.5 stars?
Another good book in the series. Very interesting enemies in this one, flesh rippers, a white lady and dont forget the tracer sent by none other than Clayton himself. Seems like its finally time for the past to catch up to Lizzie and Belle.
I did quite enjoy the fight scenes and determining who, what and how to deal with all the enemies. There's lots of magic being thrown around and some incredibly touching scenes with the Ashworth, Eli, and Lizzie. While the Aiden and Lizzie scenes are sweet and there is a lot of good in that relationship, I am still frustrated by all bashing over the head foreshadowing of how it has to end. At least we did get to learn about his ex finally. Also annoying with his mother. I just dont appreciate the constant reminders almost everytime they are together. About how much she loves him and has to get her heart broken and how witches and werewolves are for a good time not a long time.
I'm hoping with Clayton being what should be a large part of the next one, we have some more movement in the overall storyline. I do still love the magic battles and the cool beings, I just want to get passed certain parts of the story.

I am looking forward to the next one in the series hopefully we will have some resolution on Lizzie's back story. Although, I have a feeling the author may torture us on the Lizzie/Aiden home front in the next book. I'm also starting to root for Monty's quest to win Belle's affection. That was a fun part of this story.

In the fifth installment of the Lizzie Grace novels, Lizzie, Belle and Aiden are fighting a flesh stripping demon, and then a White Lady (revenge seeking ghost) appears. She is after the demon as well and must be dealt with. Of course the witches, Monty, Ashworth and Eli are a great help in the fight, as usual. Lizzie’s relationship with Aiden is getting stronger, but it’s bitter sweet because she knows it can’t last. And then as if all that isn’t enough, a tracer witch arrives who has been sent by Clayton Marlowe, the man Lizzie has been hiding from for so long. It looks as though a showdown is coming, and I can’t wait for the next story to find out what happens.

Good

I liked this story a lot. Lizzie and Belle are really growing and improving their magic skills. I like the way all the witches and rangers are working together. People are being ripped apart, eaten and reduced to a pile of bones at crossroads. They must stop the shape shifting demons responsible and deal with the white lady ghost that has been following Lizzie. Lizzie and Belle’s past is fast catching up with them. Luckily their friends are standing with them for the showdown that is coming.

Misleading

Another demon, another fight
I read the book summary and it was misleading. I thought they’d finally deal with her father and Clayton instead it’s more like an honorable mention. Then ends with the same ending as the last book.
We did meet Aidan’s mother though. Just wow. She’s a piece of work.

While taking care of her cousin Monty's cat, which needs to be mentioned more frequently, Lizzie stumbles upon a pile of bones. However, the kill was recent. They have a supernatural on their hands that can strip a victim of its flesh in a matter of minutes. Furthermore, a ghost takes an interest in the proceedings. Can Lizzie and her minions find the monster and bring it to justice.

The Lizzie Grace series follows many urban fantasy tropes. The books follow a monster of the week structure like a TV series, and Lizzie is in hiding. Unlike other books, the author only hinted at the secret of her past instead of telling you downright. Only in the fourth book did we learn that Lizzie had to marry a powerful witch. Her charming groom, Clayton, then tried to rape his drugged and underage bride. He was thwarted by Bella, and the two of them had been on the run ever since. This background is frequently alluded to in this book. But, if you don't remember the details, the author won't repeat them until the end. I found that vastly annoying.

Another big chunk of the book is devoted to Lizzie's relationship with Aidan, or rather it's impermanence. Aidan is basically heir to the throne. As such, he has to marry a werewolf and father many werewolf babies. His deceased Katie only was granted permission to marry Gabe because she was dying anyway. Aidan can't expect such leniency. And the author stressed this point. Two events, in particular, emphasize this and also hint at future events. I foresee great tragedy on the horizon and can only hope that it won't be as bad as Cecy Robson's Weird Girls.

The case itself involves less investigation than usual. Between the ghost and practically stumbling over the solution in a book, it is more about hunting down the monster, the finding the culprit. It was interesting, but I felt that the book was less about the week's supernatural and more about relationships in general.

Which is my main criticism. While I enjoyed the book, for the most part, I couldn't help the feeling that it was just meant to tie us over until book 6. The author lay down the groundwork for future developments about Aidan and Clayton and didn't focus enough on this book. If you like the series, however, you will like this one.

The werewolf reservation is still attracting dark creatures due to the elder council not having their Wild Magic wellspring protected for over a year. They do have a protector in the form of Lizzie's witch cousin, Monty. However, it will take time for the magical message to filter out that this wellspring is no longer up for grabs from dark sources. A new dark creature is on the reservation and is able to completely consume a person in a short period of time often leaving the bones neatly stacked near a crossroads. What kind of creature is this? Also, troubling to Lizzie is that that the Wild Magic within herself is getting stronger and she feels like she is being altered genetically. Lizzie recognizes that the Wild Magic is in her DNA most likely due to the fact her mother had been exposed to it while pregnant with her and instead of killing her in utero it altered her DNA. Something everyone was unaware of until Lizzie was exposed to the unprotected wellspring. Then there is the witch "tracer" that has come into town trying to locate her whom Lizzie and Belle suspect is working for the man Lizzie is hiding from . . . the man she was forced to marry against her will by her father. The fact that her eyes are no longer green due to the exposure to Wild Magic but silver may not be enough to convince the tracer she is not the person she seeks. While she is worrying about the consequences of Clayton finding her the priority is dealing with the creature that is murdering people. She has come to love the people in this town. The retired witches Ashworth and his husband Eli are always willing to assist and she comes to see them as surrogate grandparents. Added complication is that she is falling in love with Aiden, the werewolf Ranger, even though she knows she shouldn't. She has forseen her own heartbreak because werewolves can only marry other werewolves and although they do care for each other she believes there's no future for them. Can she keep them safe from Clayton if he arrives as well as from the creature winging through the forest? And how does she do it without killing because the Wild Magic is so intertwined with every magic thing she does? Any killing would contaminate this source turning a neutral power source into a dark one.

"You're the scrawniest, most ungrateful pig of a cat I've ever had the goddamn misfortune to come across, you know that?"

This is book five in the Lizzie Grace series. Lizzie discovers remains that are cleaned to the bones and must discover what type of demon is killing on the reservation.

There seemed to be so much going on in this book. We still have Lizzie and Belle trying to maintain their secrecy about their past. i think that is getting to be a bit wearing for Aiden. I'm afraid that Lizzie and Aiden will not make it as a couple. The constant reminder that werewolves and witches don't marry makes me sad. The introduction of Aiden's mother throws a whole new set of problems their way.

Monty, the new reservation with and Lizzie's cousin brings a bit of humor to the story. His constant pursuit of Belle brings a smile to my face.

In addition to the demon, we have a White Lady that wants Lizzie to help her get revenge.

The character building is very good in this series. It was only as I began reading that I realized I skipped book 4 so I had to listen to it before starting this one. It has been a Lizzie filled week! I enjoy learning more about the reservation and the werewolves. The plot keeps me turning the page to see what will happen next.

The ending took me by surprise. While not a true cliffhanger, it definitely makes me want to start the next book as soon as possible to see where the storyline takes us

This is a good solid series that I recommend.

Of all of the Lizzie Grace installments, "Wicked Wings" is my favorite. The overall plot is really hearing up but I must say that Ms. Arthur's choices in paranormal villains are getting a little too similar to the ones from the past. There are so many myths out there that there is no need to repeat those with similar traits.

This time Aiden asks Lizzie to go to a surprise dinner with him but before that happens Lizzie stumbles upon a watch with human skin on it. As she digs further she finds bones. While she waits for the rangers to arrive she hears a blood curdling scream and upon investigation discovers another set of bones picked clean. Now, she and the gang have to find out who or what is doing the killing before anymore people are killed.

If that isn't bad enough, there is a tracer in town attempting to find Lizzie Marlowe. Despite all efforts to keep her at bay, the tracer's interest in Lizzie grows. To make matters worse, the surprise dinner Aiden has in store for Lizzie is with none other than his mother. Jeez, the girl just can't seem to get a break.

This read is a foreboding of the trouble to come forcing Liz to reveal her past to those she cares for most. She will not run this time. She has chosen her battle ground and it is the reservation. However, what's different from her past is that she has a bevy of friends at her side who will not allow her to fight alone.
