Dragon Thief: A Firethorn Kingdoms fantasy novel was a super fun, fast-paced fantasy story that I would certainly recommend to YA readers!

The novel itself feels a bit like an exposition, but even though it is quite short, it got me excited to learn more about this fantasy world and the political plot unfolding in future books. The characters were enjoyable to read about and left me curious about their backgrounds and motivations in the end.

I don't think the split perspective between the two main characters worked particularly well in this book because it often felt like all I needed was Jurelle's narration and then Lyo's shorter sections were either repetitive or unnecessary until the very end. But, I can see for consistency's sake how this structure would work to further develop the plot in the sequel.

Comparable Titles:
The Star-Touched Queen
The Winner's Curse
The False Prince
Mask of Shadows
The Queen of Ieflaria

Palace intrigue, wicked kings, and best of all, magic

Princess Jurelle of Muirland was set to marry King Zalar of Surran rumored to have murdered his first wife. Jurelle’s father, King Haran, wanted a peace alliance between the two countries and and was willing to sacrifice his daughter to accomplish it no matter how wicked King Zalar was. But the princess wouldn’t go willingly and she had a secret she could use to thwart her father’s plans for her, magic. Women were forbidden to use magic so the princess had to keep her ability a secret. This story was filled with lots of action which kept my eyes riveted to the pages. How was the princess going to get out of this arrangement? Well, this author has shown her ability at writing lots of twists and turns to this story. It was well written. I liked her descriptions of palace intrigue. Her characters were fascinating such as her wicked father, a mother who tried whatever she could to help her daughter without being caught, and a brother who was also her friend willing to help her in whatever way he could, plus many others. And it goes without saying, the great world building. Also, magic and magical creatures were involved so my interest was piqued. I’m sure if you pick up this story and read it you also will love it. Highly recommended.

This is an exciting YA fantasy that introduces a new world and well-described characters of the much anticipated (by me) series The Firethorn Kingdom. I was sucked into this world in the first few pages and didn’t come out again until the last word. I love the female protagonist and especially enjoyed how her mistreatment and abuse became justice. Want to know more? Quickly, go buy this book and read it tonight! I highly recommend it to anyone that likes fantasy, not just young adults, as I am far past that age and enjoyed it immensely. I can hardly wait for book 2 to be published and I only have to wait less than a month- please hurry Katy ;-).

I read this first as a gift from the author and then purchased to read it again, it's that good!

I was only mad that it ended. I wasn’t expecting it to end there. I’m definitely drawn to this story, and not at all what I expected. I thought Lyo wanted to kidnap the princess to begin with, this egg is throwing me for a loop. The kingdom seems to be well established and the family dynamic is good. The idea of princess wanting to get away from an awful family and awful life to come is pretty standard, but the dragon twist is enough for me to want more. (If there are similar stories, I haven’t read them yet)

A great story. Jurelle went through a few hardships and learned about herself and her powers. I hope we learn more about Pell and Kiri in the next book. As well as hopefully Lyo!

Dragon Thief is the first in a young adult fantasy series that follows Princess Jurelle of Muirland, a princess with blossoming magical abilities living in a world where the practice of magic by women is forbidden. To make matters more difficult, her father has set her up in an arranged marriage with a royal from a neighboring kingdom who has a terrible reputation and a gruesome past. Jurelle is not one to get pushed around and accept the fate laid out for her by her father. In protest, she dragon naps her father's prized dragonette and tries to smuggle it out of town to a better life. On her way out of town, she runs into Lyo and things get interesting as Jurelle's life takes an unexpected turn. The author does a good job of introducing the main characters and laying out the beginning of the world building in terms of the various kingdoms and their politics and the magic system. It will be interesting to see how this all develops in future installments in the series. The pace was good as a first book in a series. I think the author should take a bit more time in developing the characters and laying out details regarding the magic system in future installments of the series. Promising start to a good young adult fantasy series.
