How did I get here? It's a question we've all asked ourselves. When the Devil asks herself the same question, she begins to recollect her tragic fall from grace. MY SOUL BURNED is a brutally atrocious tale of violence, sex, and despair. Narrated by the Devil herself as she elaborates on her extraordinary transformation from God's most beloved angel, to curst outcast, to the epitome of all that is evil!
A bold concept that struggles with execution and clarity.
While this book attempts an ambitious, gender-flipped reimagining of biblical figures, the narrative unfortunately feels disjointed and difficult to follow. The story is "all over the place," lacking a cohesive plot or a clear central hook to keep the reader engaged. Without a strong sense of purpose, I found it hard to invest in the characters or the world they inhabit
The story jumps between scenes—like the "Atheist with a Code" and Umeko’s arc—that don't seem to impact the main plot. The ending is quite abrupt, leaving many questions unanswered.
The female lead feels underdeveloped, and the dialogue is often dominated by long, monotone speeches from the Devil that stall the momentum.
There are several plot holes and a lack of world-building. Traditional biblical context is discarded without enough "in-universe" explanation to replace it, leading to confusion regarding the roles of the angels and the protagonist’s motivations.
This story has a unique premise, but it requires a significant structural overhaul and deeper character development to truly land. As it stands, the lack of emotional stakes and the scattered timeline made it a difficult read although there is potential.
Dark, disturbing, and definitely not for the squeamish … Depravity & Temptation at its most horribly evil!
Stories don’t get much more ‘full-on’ than this. From the very first line, it’s clear this is going to be a pretty dark and explicit book that doesn’t hold back or pull its punches in the story it wants to tell. Told from a somewhat blunt and colloquial first-person perspective (excellent choices here I think), the reader really sees into the darkest recesses of the central character’s mind, in this case, the Devil herself. Whilst My Soul Burns certainly falls into the general category of horror, featuring as it does the Devil, Hell, and soul-stealing (among other even more disturbing themes), the reader will find no hellish monsters, demons, or any of the more traditional horror characters. The real evil and horror here has more to do with the all too real varieties that exist among us mortals, both in the mind and the extreme evil and cruelty of which humans consistently prove themselves capable: murder, explicit rape scenes, and even more horrendous crimes to name but a few—with a little help and temptation from the Devil at times. Amid this horror I refer to, the author does interspace it with snippets of dry humour, moments that definitely make the reader chuckle, both of which the author does extremely well when sometimes lightening the tone of the writing.
Much of the story is written in the form of successive incidents/anecdotes of the Devil’s soul bargaining efforts throughout history - some successful, some not so much - revealing too, another side to the Devil other than that of being the personification of pure evil. Alongside all the sickening depravity we might expect, and believe me there’s plenty of that in abundance, we see the inner torments, guilt, and self-doubts the Devil has—only to see her put them aside time and time again in her needful quest for ever more souls. Nonetheless, this is a story that encourages the reader to think about and question many different concepts: good and evil, free will, the idea of some eventual reward or punishment for the life we lead … a lot will depend on the character of the reader just what though.
Although I gave this five stars, in truth, it’s closer to a 4.5. I think the litany of ‘derogatory terms’ that filled the opening paragraph was probably a bit over the top in trying to establish the tone—a few lines would have been enough. There were a few instances too where I thought the explicit description of some scenes could have been toned down a bit and left to the imagination without any loss of impact, adhering to the adage less is more. With this last point in mind - and I do I feel an author should be free of any moral constraint to write what they like - I would say the author might be advised to provide potential readers with a clear and definite advance warning of extreme and potentially offensive content in the book’s description. Other than that, a highly original take on the Devil, her fall from grace, and the evolution and nature of Hell itself. Though there can be no doubt this book won’t be to every horror fan’s taste, it will certainly appeal to those who like their horror raw, extreme, explicit, and even abhorrent at times.
Wow! The first chapter has the Devil getting gang banged and it only gets darker and more wild from there. That may sound stupid but I assure you, once you read the story it makes complete logical sense. In this story, the Devil is cursed from Heaven but she doesn't just become evil overnight. She has to consume souls to ease the pain of being separated from God and she becomes more and more desperate as time goes on, slowly becoming more and more evil. The transformation is so fascinating to see unfold and again it really adds up. I was skeptical of this story because it is very hard for any author to take a concept everyone is familiar with, take it in a new direction, and have it work out well. To my surprise that is exactly what Nathan Crockett did. This is a Devil I have never seen before but hope I get to see again as this is my favorite interpretation of the ruler of hell.
~ Mr. Crockett please add a thorough list of trigger warnings as this is not a typical “horror” novel.
If you can read past the prologue, then I have a slow hand clap for you. Pad your knees, ready your “Hail Marys,” and buckle up, buttercup, because this story isn’t for the timid. Nathan Crockett weaves a tale that will have you squirming in your shorts. *Triggers, triggers, triggers! If you have ignored the warnings, it’s your own fault. This book is pure degradation and nightmare fuel of the human kind.
“My Soul Burned” is a raw, crude, violent, unhinged curiosity about human souls and how they tick as seen through the eyes of the devil in female form — Lucy. She chooses visit after visit to Earth in human form to experience the things God has bestowed upon his creations. This story is not about puppies and sunny days at the beach, but the sickness, the fear, the brutality, the despair and desperation many humans suffer.
Around 38%, the narrative changes and I was no longer reading Satan’s personal journal, but seeing through her eyes what someone else was enduring at the hands of a psycho.
Around 40%, I felt my face contort with disgust as I was caught off guard by a description of child grape. Evidently, I have a limit to my emotional boundaries. 😔🤮 *Did I mention triggers? Didn’t know that was one.* Pretty sure I could’ve done without that very vivid scene. Fade-to-black or closed-door scenes can be just as impactful if written well.
Once Lucy meets Arthur, the story takes on a more complex quality. Who’s good? Who’s bad? Who’s to blame? Can they change? Who’s in control of that change? Free will? Destiny? Unfortunately, the ending left us with many questions to debate for ourselves.
Do I feel better having read this book? No. Do I question my life choices after reading this book? Sure. Would I read this book again? No. Would I recommend this book to others? Only if that “other” is a unicorn. This book is not for the squeamish or idle reader. This is for a very specific audience — psychologists and theologians with emotional control.
*After a long sleep:
After writing my initial review, I closed the draft and scrolled through others’ reviews: Seeing their thoughts made me realize that my response was a visceral reaction to Nathan Crockett’s story. I was appalled by the despicable acts written throughout — complete degradation of people of all ages. Were they for shock value or simply a culmination of Crockett’s research of all the horrible things serial killers have riddled the world with for decades?
While considering this, I put myself in Lucy’s shoes: WWSD? (What would Satan do?) — I may be an ethereal being, an angel, a child of grace, but I am a “woman” scorned, rejected, and ignored by the only being I’ve ever loved. Why would he throw me away for asking one thing of “him” — can I have free will, too? Would I accept my fate, be cast aside, and simply do nothing but figure out how to exist in a new place, alone, and misunderstood? Or, would I be so angry and desperate for “his” attention again that I would commit every horrifying act possible against “his” creations to be noticed? How far would I go trying to regain “his” love for me? How far would “he” let me go before stopping me?
“My Soul Burned” is one disturbing version of a woman yearning for a man’s attention. I want to feel sorry for Lucy, but I don’t. I find her sad and offensive.
Every one knows the story of Creation, God, Adam and Eve and the fallen angel who was cast out of Heaven to the fiery pits of Hell, where he would then reign for eternity. There has also been many variations on this, the oldest story ever told by various authors and screen writers over the years, all putting their own slant on it. But not like this.
My Burning Soul is not your typical horror novel. It is not even a horror novel in the strictest sense, there are no scary scenes or blood and guts here, it is more of a morality tale. Told from the perspective of the Devil, it's part monologue, part demonic therapy session (with the Devil on your couch) and part confessional. For this to work the main character has to be a fully fleshed out, believable protagonist able to carry the book. Otherwise this could have ended up just sounding like a twisted diary or a stage play. Nathan pulls this off admirably, infusing the Devil with enough personality (angry outbursts, signs of guilt, black humor) that at times it does feel the character is actually in the room with you. You even find yourself warming to the Devil, whether you believe what you are told, like the character or not.
One thing I should point out, without spoiling anything, is that this isn't just the Devil yapping on about how God is in the wrong, and how bitter the Devil is about sitting in Hell all these years. Because that's not the case. I'll say no more. The author has come up with a very clever, original and unexpected premise that unfolds as the story goes on. Nathan has obviously put in quite a bit of research in to the history of mankind's morally dubious past too. There are some grisly details concerning some of the worlds's most famous monsters over the years that were both interesting and disturbing.
I should point out there are themes used here and graphic scenes of sexual violence that are not for the squeamish or easily offended but if you are a fan of dark fiction with an open mind, willing to read authors who think outside of the box, you should give this novel a go.
Hell, you've got nothing to lose but your soul, right?
"That’s the problem with the world. They don’t understand that bad guys really just need a hug."
I love going into books blind. I honestly had no idea what this was about when I first started reading it. The first chapter alone had my eyes bulging out of my head.
This book is not a "light" read. Its dark and pretty morbid. Dark humor. it's not your typical horror book... We aren't talking ghosts and haunted houses but rather a book about morality.. how we were created.. God's free will that we were gifted.. and the devils journey from the beginning and her fall from grace taking over hell being told in first person by the devil herself.
I thought this was pretty genius and extremely entertaining. I personally found the devil to be quite funny at times. The author did a fantastic a job with her character and the telling of her story. She reminded me of the show Lucifer and his character how he's full of sarcasm and wit. I feel like each ch of this could be its own episode of a show. Everyone is familiar with Adam & Eve, Satan, etc but this isnt just a casual retelling of all that. Honestly this was a fresh, creative. I thoroughly enjoyed the premise of the book. It reeled me in with the soul stealing, and the stories of the individuals that bargained with the devil and those who were just plain evil.
So enjoy this dark, funny, soul taking read while you go on this journey with the devil herself! and do your best to keep yours intact while reading because "everything burns." This definitely won't be for everyone. It's extremely descriptive and there are definitely some gut wrenching, eye popping, cringe worthy parts that could easily trigger someone. (It is still horror after all.)
Shocking, repulsive, and depraved – but a strangely compelling read.
A list of possible Trigger Warnings for this book goes off the scale: murder, rape, torture, sexual abuse, self-harm, suicide, violence, gambling, PTSD, drug and alcohol abuse – I’m sure I’ve missed a few!
Read ‘My Soul Burned’ at your peril, fully aware of what you’ll encounter within its pages – the full and frank confessional-type outpourings of an extremely depraved female Devil who is addicted to consuming souls she’s corrupted and regaling you with every appalling, gruesome, horrific detail in the process.
If, however, you are intrigued enough to read on, you’ll discover a complex character with all too human-like emotions, jealousies, flaws and sins, and a backstory to her angelic days as God’s beloved—albeit biased from her point of view—which explains such a lot about her behaviour and actions. (Not that it condones them, though—or does it?)
My feelings towards her mirrored Arthur’s attitude—I was fascinated to discover what the outcome between their sparring would be. Needless to say, it wasn’t what I’d hoped/anticipated for either of them! Nor was the book’s ending…but you’ll have to come to your own conclusions about that! The story is clever and well written, with touches of dry humour and pathos to lighten the repugnant, soul-sickening scenes. It’s thought-provoking, especially on the subjects of free will, the nature of evil, and whether it’s ever really too late to ask for forgiveness.
I’ve rated this story 4 stars because many scenes were just too full-on raw, violent, abusive, disturbing and depraved for me to stomach—I’d have preferred grim hints and the rest left to my imagination. Other less squeamish readers will relish them, though!
Firstly, there are no trigger warnings and there should be (the little blurb saying "Warning! Graphic depictions of violence and non-con sex" is not enough. It needs to also be IN the book before people read, with a detailed list, so they can decide if they want to continue. There is murder, rape, sexual assault, cheating, PTSD, self-harm, child abuse, torture, suicide, violence, gambling, drug abuse, addiction, alcohol abuse and other things in this book that could serially trigger someone struggling. This is an issue.
While the overall idea sounded interesting, I feel like this story strayed from the original plot and just kind of jumped around.
What was supposed to be a story about Lucifer's fall and how she slowly became more "evil" as she became addicted to taking souls, it turned into a story about many different people and how she corrupted them, and then into an unexplained obsession with one man that randomly went into his POV a couple of times.
The story was written like a teenager writing a diary, the grammar was all over the place and confusing, and there were even some inconsistencies where it would say one thing and contradict itself in the next paragraph.
It's not the worst book I've read.. but it's not one I would recommend either.
I would have loved to drive deeper into this and wanted to love it, but it just kept me frowning. I contemplated not finishing it many times but wanted to give it a proper chance. I'm sad this isn't what I was expecting, but still thank the author for the time and effort to try to create something so unique.
I received a copy of this book from the author for free and I'm choosing to leave this review myself.
Wow. What an amazing read. Honestly, I haven’t read a book this good in a long time. I usually read paranormal romance, but this was something completely different—and unforgettable.
This book is written from the point of view of the Devil himself, following his descent and the choices that led him to become who he is. It almost felt like a reverse Bible in a way—not on the same level, of course—but more like a dark retelling that makes you question everything you thought you knew.
Please check the trigger warnings before reading, because there are many. This book is not for the faint of heart. It’s heavy, dark, disturbing at times, and very intense—after all, the story is told through the Devil’s own perspective.
What surprised me the most is that by the end, I found myself understanding him, or at least seeing him differently. Not excusing his actions, but understanding the pain, the pride, the loss, and the anger behind his fall. That’s something I never expected from a book like this.
The writing is powerful, emotional, and unapologetically dark. This is not a comfort read—it’s a book that makes you think, feel uncomfortable, and sit with it long after you’re done.
If you enjoy dark, philosophical, morally gray stories and aren’t afraid of heavy themes, this book is absolutely worth reading. It won’t be for everyone, but for the right reader, it’s incredible.
Reviewed by Dee Layton on behalf of the Plot Thickens Book Club. Title: My Soul Burned Author: Nathan Crockett Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Please read your trigger warnings this is another book that will be hard for sensitive readers. It is dark, disturbing, and definitely not for somebody that is very sensitive when it comes to things of such nature. Now getting into the good stuff I personally love the first person perspective because they were very blunt and honest and to the point. In the very first part of this book The devil she's being violated taking advantage of. She also has to now since she is no longer in the presence of God has to consume souls to ease the pain of the separation. I personally like how the story evolves it all makes a lot of sense. In the beginning the devil she isn't evil at first but she slowly becomes desperate and evil as time goes. But if you had to go through what she's been through you'd probably be the same way. I absolutely loved this book. It is very fascinating to see how all this does unfold. It's mind blowing in a sense which is what I guess that's what I find the most fascinating. I personally like the way the devil character is written It makes sense. I truly hope to see more of this character in the author's writing because I'm digging this.
I loved this book. Some may get caught up on the fact that they are grammatical mistakes and even a few typos. However I feel those were intentional since it really adds to the story. This doesn't feel like a story written by a pretentious author who went to some fancy college. The story is narrated by the Devil and it truly feels as such. This is a unique style with lots of raw emotion. There are some slow parts of course, mainly chapter two but the writing style and the way the Devil speaks is very griping and most of those pages really fly by. The journey the Devil goes on throughout the story is something I have never seen before however it makes so much sense I often asked myself, "Why hasn't this been done already?" Despite some flaws this is still a fantastic piece of work and a great first outing. If you like stories about the Devil, human psychology, stories that go deep into the mind of a character, or anything that is very dark and twisted then I would highly recommend this book.
This was definitely a fun read. Comedic Horror is one those genres that you want to take seriously because naturally it's dark, but there's just so much nonsensical stuff going on that you can't help but laugh; if you have a twisted sense of humor--which I do.
I honestly love when Satan is cast as a female, in this case, we have Lucy. She's twisted, she wicked, she's downright evil; but there's still a smidge of goodness in her that she tries very hard to ignore because she would rather suffer than admit she misses God and Heaven. And tormenting God's favorite creations is just how she chooses to spend her endless life.
I really like Lucy as a character. She's about the most carefully crafted character in this book, and I think that's deliberate. I hope we get to see a sequel to this. I'd love to see Lucy and Arthur's game continue and see who ultimately wins. I'm not sure Lucy realizes how evenly matched they are.
I think I'm going to look out for more of Mr. Crockett's work, this was a fun read, and fun reads are always a great reprieve from the heaviness of life.
Gender bend devil story! You know how the devil went down to Georgia? What if it wasn't a male devil...what if in fact the devil was a female?! Want to know the story of how she fell? How twisted the story becomes? Dive right in! This isnt your typical no frills story. Youre going to need to like gothic, dark, amd depraved things to sink your teeth into this novella! Highly recommend even if its just a break from longer reads, it truly makes you think differently about how the devil may act. Because what if, the devil isn't truly a man...
Love, jealousy, revenge, attention-seeking behavior, brutality, humanity or lack thereof are all themes you’ll find in this story. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you can get past your pearl-clutching, you’ll enjoy it.
This was a wild and memorable read that blends dark humor with deeply disturbing horror. It falls into that strange space where you’re not sure whether to laugh or feel uncomfortable, and sometimes you end up doing both. If you enjoy twisted, comedic horror, there’s definitely something here to appreciate.
First time reading this author. I was glad to have to opportunity. This book grabs your attention quick and keeps sucking you in. The FMC is great and her story was interesting. It goes many years and shows different aspects of human nature and what we are capable of. I look forward to reading more of his work.
Without spoiling anything I hope... the devil really can be the calm before the storm and show what we are want and what we will do to get it.
This is an intelligent, highly believable take on an old entity told from the Devil's own lips. Portraying the Devil, not just as a female but a woman wronged by her love who is none other than God, introduces us to a character who is believable, and understandable in her sense of betrayal and rage. The development of this character is so insightful and quite frankly brilliant. You will actually finish the story feeling sorry for the Devil.
Not what I was expecting. But fell in love with the story. It has a bit of Ghost Rider in it. Male the deal with the devil and sign the contract with your own blood. But then I think of the show Lucifer. Where he came to earth for a vacation. Read for yourself and see. It makes you think and wonder about what you learned about God and the devil in a way that sticks in the back of your mind with questions hopefully to be answered one day.
What a great read. Lucy aka the devil was definitely a innocent but trying to be very very evil. Lol the fact at first she was having a hard time getting people's souls made me laugh at times. Also the fact that she went to earth as a human and ended up getting rapped by a serial rapist was crazy. I loved this book

My Soul Burned is a raw original story of life through the Devil's eyes and it ain't a pretty. The Devil gives us some insight into her existence, her opinion of humans and God. I enjoyed the book, it seems to be a direct creation of an eccentric mind. It was funny, disturbing and dark. I think there is no redemption and the Devil's soul has burned too much.
This book had me hooked pretty quickly. Character build was great. The progression of the story moved quickly. It has been a really long time since I've read a book that kept me interested. Very well written. Glad to see some original thought given to a storyline.
4.5 stars. That was completely interesting and not at all what I expected. The story kept me wanting to know what was next and was easy to follow. I really enjoyed the writing style and I would definitely read more of his books!
It wasn't what I expected. It had vibes from two shows. Lucifer and ghost rider. But damn good. I now have questions about God and the devil though. Being raised catholic i can see this in my mind as a short movie playing and damn so true on so many levels. Read for yourself and see.
I picked it up and couldn’t put it down. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Definitely caused a WTF reaction NUMEROUS times. Audible gasps. You name it.
Definitely a little different then what I'm used to but I have to admit its on my reread list for sure!! It was a page turner for me I read it in one sitting.
this was one of the best books that I have read in a while as someone who has always played the devils advocate it was cool reading the devil's side of the story I always believe and instill that into everyone in my life that you need to tkae a step back and think about the other persons side of the story. It is graphic for sure so be aware some stuff it was like oh boy and i don't get uncomfortable often, but it did not make me upset it was just part of the story I will be recommending this book to my book friends.
