I am so conflicted :( I genuinely want the authors to answer some questions for me cause this is / was a PHENOMENAL 5 star read for me.
I couldn't put it down.... but one thing ONE PROMINENT THING that you hate happens and I just can't love it anymore.
So Archer and Belle's relationship is beautiful and I loved watching it blossom. Archer goes to the army and comes back broken and takes it out on everyone.
That's not my problem ... this is a spoiler so pls don't read if u wanna read the story. But it does answer whether this book is safe or not.
To my safety gals (and I have many on my friendship list so this is for you), don't read this book.
During a 3 year separation, she's celibate and is disgusted by the thought of kissing someone else that she ran away from the date ... she didn't even kiss someone else.
And him? He had sex with Bartie
Now I genuinely want to ask the authors this (and I mean no harm I'm curious at the rationale), why was it that Belle's love was so strong she wasn't able to be with anyone else but He was able to have sex with someone else ?
I get that he used Bartie to get off and he was an ass to her and there were no emotions. this book would've undoubtedly been my favourite book I read since 2017 (including 2017) had he also stayed celibate OR if she was also with someone else.
So how was he able to be with another woman and not feel bad ? Guilty? Horrible? How?
And was it only when he was still being horrible or was it also when he started working on himself ?
For my friends who know me, I'm not against MCs being with other people when it's justified and explained and fits the character.
I also dislike that she slept with him right away ... I'm really curious about the decision making of the authors when they made him sleep with Bartie regularly.
Why can he use peopl to get off but she can't ?
If anyone else who loved this book understands more than me ... pls do telll. And I'm sure the authors are reading this review .. so I'd really love to understand...
I believed in te soul mate love they had ... that's why it PAINED ME SO MUCH that this one aspect turned their love ugly to me :( and made one of my favourite books one of those I regret reading in the end cause I feel such actions were unfair... one thing I can say is that these authors can write love and it's testimony how much I loved this story in the beginning that I feel so so angry about the turn of events with Bartie :(
I'd love to understand more ... why allow him to move on sexually and not her?
I would've given him 10x more shit cause of the Bartie thing. I wish she did too.

🙄I’m already disliking this h for this 👆🏽AND her decidedly inappropriate relationship with the kid she used to babysit. Eww…no…why? The whole damn town thinks it’s off. 🤮

The way their relationship and interactions are written is what draws me to my Hxhs in Romance, but it’s totally wasted on this heroine.
I try to ignore the fact that she is unlikable to me. It’s hard work replacing an unlikable MC in your mind with a more tasteful one. I wish I didn't have to, since reading shouldn't be a chore, but I want to give the book a solid shot.
I doubt she’s meant to come across as anything other than the sweet and sassy; caring and loyal person that she is. But that god-awful body-betraying nonsense she had going on from the start put me off her immediately and set the tone since then. If I only got his pov, I’d thoroughly enjoy this book as Chicklit.
PLUS, her inappropriate behavior with a minor is even worse. She’s 21 and Jake, whom she babysat as a kid is now 16.
She revels in it:
I drop my head to hide my amusement. Call me strange but I love this part, the confusion. Jake and I are affectionate and while our relationship is completely platonic, most people can’t help but make more out of it than there is. I see it as their problem, I love Jake, as he does me and I don't care for the judgement of others.”
The possessive hero is an absolute waste on her:
Mocking me with a wink, she bends at the waist to plant a hard kiss on his lips. This isn't unusual behavior for them, she touches her lips to his every time she sees his stupid fucking face.
Hero and said minor on the topic:
He must see the questions in my eyes, the uncertainty I feel at their shared touches. “It’s a habit we’ve never grown out of. Annabelle craves affection Archer, she didn’t
have much of it growing up, except from Janie and me. If I can make her feel loved, make her feel part of my family with a hug or a brief kiss, there’s no hesitation from me.”
Except, its kissing on the lips.
I love age gap tropes if it's done well but here it’s just icky.

So no. Another book where the hero is broken, supposedly loves heroine, but is screwing another woman during their separation. He constantly disrespects the h, chose an ex (to basically cheat with) and doesn’t care how this would hurt her. The heroine is celibate because she couldn’t even stand to kiss another man, she felt like she was cheating. What I don’t get is how authors are this dumb? You just told us that he doesn’t love her as much as she loves him. He didn’t just have a drunken one stand, this woman was a regular hookup. And his excuse that it was “just to get off” is bullshit. He has two working hands right!?!? Who needs a man that is screwed up, but supposedly loves you, but his problems and “love” don’t keep him from sticking it in another woman. I guess I should say thank you to author for letting us know their hero’s don’t care about the heroines as much as the heroines do the heroes? It saves me a lot of time on this series and probably anything else they write.

💔 4 BROKEN STARS 💔
I'm torn. Broken. Ripped raw open.
I don't know why I do this to myself. I always know stories like these will destroy me, still I jump in and later I scold myself for it.
I resent her. I despise her. I need her. I hate her. But fuck me, I love her.
Cold, ruthless heroes has always kind of done it for me. Archer was a whole new level of asshole tough. I mean, at one point I wished I could just reach in and give his brain a little shake to put some fucking sense into him.
Annabelle Edwards lost both parents at a young age. Since then she's been raised by her gran. More than often, she babysits Jake who is little brother of Archer Dean. She's very close to their mother, Janie, and Jake and she loves them like family. She despises Archer for his attitude, and how he doesn't put his family first makes. But after years, when Archer returns home, he's different and kind towards her. She's always found him attractive but he's always seen her as his kid neighbour. Not anymore.
"What do you think will hurt less? Could you do it? Break your own heart? Or would you make me do it?"
Archer Dean is damaged. He's angry and mean. After a tragic loss, he leaves his family and home and joins the army. He returns to Carnation five years later, a little happier, a little lighter. That's when he sees Annabelle again. Older and beautiful Annabelle who lightens his world with her sass and jokes.
When their relationship has grown from hate to love, it's time for Archer to leave again. Only when he comes back he's more damaged than ever. He's drinking and starting fights, sleeping in a jail cell, hating on Annabelle.
I applaud Annabelle for her commitment to stand by Archer and for trying to help him. She was strong. Having to face the love of her life treat her like shit for years. This is a love story you will hate and love. At times I wanted to hit Archer with a chair just because of how he hurt Annabelle and his family.
Archer treats me no better than a doormat, hoping he's break through whatever he's dealing with. Wishing with everything, that even the smallest snippets of my Archer would return.
This story was full of pain. So much pain it suffocated me. I got sucked in from the first page and I knew I was in for a angsty ride. I cried while reading their story. It was angry, beautiful, passionate and confusing but it was so real. I loved the minor characters and absolutely adored Jake and Annabelle's friendship.
"I refuse to give up on what we have, Archer. I love you," She finishes on a whisper.
If you love your heroes distant and cold, this is certainly a story you will love. WARNING: Have tissues close 'cause you gonna need 'em, honey.

Angst overload!
This is a hard book to rate. It's not a light and easy read, it's an angst loaded rollercoaster. It's not sweet and cute but it's a love story nonetheless.
I liked the first two parts of the book. I was actually enjoying the story even though it's a little more drama than I usually like. The authors really made a point in conveying Annabelle and Archer's love. I bought it. I felt it. I liked both characters. I loved Annabelle. Her strength, her centeredness and assertiveness. So sure of what she wanted and didn't waver in her love and strength until she was forced to. She loved Archer deeply and fiercely.
I liked Archer too, because I could see he was broken, but when he finally saw Annabelle, really saw her and how strong she was, he just fell hard and he too loved her. It really broke my heart what he was going through, how completely lost and utterly broken he felt and I think the author's (at least in part two of the book), did a good job at portraying what PTSD can do, the damage it can Inflict and the destruction it leaves. It destroyed Archer and he destroyed Annabelle. I really felt all their emotions and understood their actions.
But then we get to part three of the book, it all went down the drain for me. I think the author's tried to show how broken Annabelle was, but in the process they killed her character. They turned her into a fickle mess, who lost her determination and her spine along the way. She was silly, immature and a wavering fool. I won t give too many spoilers but her actions were really stupid.
As for Archer he was kind of disgusting to me. He blames her for everything HE did? He resents her for not sticking around after he literally pushed her to her breaking point. Then he claims he loves her so deeply, but he was with OW. Not just any OW, but the one he had a history with and knew that it would be the one that hurt Annabelle the most. But he says it's ok, because he only used the ow to "get off", he never even cared about her. Nice. Even though they were technically broken up at that point, when you claim to love someone as much as he did Annabelle, you don't do what he did. It still felt like cheating to me. Come to think of it he never even apologized to Annabelle for that betrayal. He was actually mad that she wouldn't just get past that. I found Archer selfish and selfcentered. He only really cared about HIS own feelings.
One thing really bothered me. PTSD was supposed to be a central point in the story, playing a huge role in what happened to Archer and Annabelle. It was actually a bit overstated in the second part of the book. However in the third part of the book, it was gone like magic. They just used it as a plot device when it served its purpose only to discard and disregard it completely in part three. Archer hit rock bottom then poof, he wakes up the next day and decides he's going to be better, so he is. After years of suffering from it to the point of destroying not only his own life but Annabelle's too. I didn't buy it. PTSD is a serious mental issue, and it takes a lot of medical attention, therapy and work to get better, learn to cope or at least manage it. Here it was treated in such a way that it deprecates and minimizes the struggle of thousands of people who actually suffer from it. Shame on the authors for doing that.
I honestly don't have any desire to read the next book. Based on the blurb, the reviews and the characters we already got to know in this one, I don't like we're it's going and I will just be aggravated.

This book really disappointed me. I didn't so much see it as a love story but as a story of unhealthy obsession. When we meet Archer, he is an immature, self-centered guy. That is easier to excuse when someone is younger but he resorts to his selfish, self-centered ways even as he ages. He speaks in a controlling way with Annabelle and we are asked, as readers, to accept this as sexiness on his part. Their story plays out with lots of angst as Archer suffers PTSD after returning from his tour of duty. He treats Annabelle horribly, berates her, gets drunk all the time, refuses to come home many times, embarrasses her, is seen with his former lover hanging all over him, and despite her pleas he seeks no treatment or help. He even blames her for leaving when he explicitly demanded she did so.
There is a separation and upon her return he pretty much demands that she get over things and resume their relationship without respecting her need to take time to think on things. Annabelle is a doormat for him continuously. And the cherry on the cake is that while she remained celebrate during their separation he was having sex with his former lover, knowing how hurtful that would be to Belle, and then justifies it by telling her he was just "getting off."
None of this was romantic to me. And it was difficult to find anything redeemable in these weak characters.

I still can't quite grasp my feelings about this book. For starters, I want to kick myself in the a** for taking this long to read it. No joke. I can't imagine a time where I will not remember this book. If I try to think of one word to sum it up, the best that I can come up with is...wow. Just wow. One word that can sort of semi-adequately convey my feelings. Archer Dean and Annabelle Edwards are two of the most deep, personal, heart-grabbing characters I have ever read. Again, no joke. I have had a peachy keen life. I am truly lucky. I shouldn't be able to relate to Archer and Annabelle’s complex devastation, but I do, simply because Haley Jenner's writing is that real. It's that relevant. It's that effing good. And don't even get me started on the secondary (though in many ways, not secondary!) characters—there is so much to come from this world and I can't wait!
Lots of books make me feel, but VERY few books make me cry. I welled up reading this story. The history between the two main characters is everything. The way that Belle makes Archer finally get his life together and make something of himself is everything. The way that they reunite and fall in love is everything. Their flaws are everything. And their complete breakdown, and heart annihilating loss IS everything. I know I'm being extra with this review, but I don’t care. These authors deserve extra. They have written a truly captivating story of love, loss and survival. Archer deserves all the stars. <3 <3 <3

This is one of those books where I repeatedly asking myself, how come people aren't reading this book? READ THIS BOOK, PEOPLE!!!!!
I was blown away by Archer. Completely blown away. I've read a handful of books since this one, and none have compared to this story. It's heart wrenching and beautiful and will stay with me forever. These two authors know how to bring the emotion and angst. They build three dimensional characters with a developed, moving plot. But the writing? Please. The talent they have leaves me speechless. I didn't want for anything while reading this book.
Archer is raw emotion and phenomenal written. I highly recommend this novel.

Ooof, this book is HARD to rate!! The first 65% or so was fantastic. The story was angsty, steamy, entertaining, addicting and it was detailed. We got to experience so many highs and lows with the H/h. But there were definitely flaws as well. The STORY was good, but the writing needed help. There are SO many grammatical errors, this book is in desperate need of an editor, even simple spell check could've helped a bit. I really did love the chemistry between Archer and Belle. They moved very quickly, both physically and emotionally but it wasn't quite insta love b/c they had a shared history before becoming involved. Archer was always a bit of a asshole, Belle was always a bit of a doormat, yet they both remained likable to a certain degree for the first part of the book.
Then we get to their downfall...the buildup was lengthy and watching Archer become a complete douchebag, asshole to Belle was frustrating. Watching Belle take his horrid, emotionally and verbally abusive treatment was a tough pill to swallow. Especially at the end when he FORCED Belle out of her hometown and out of his life and all the while he was blaming HER for not being able to fix his issues. Yeah, I didn't like him much. Then she moves in with Aubrey...this is where the book went from a 4 star to a 1 star (if I'm being generous). Belle lives like a ghost for THREE YEARS. Look, we've all been in love. Some of us have been married, been in long term relationships, had childhood sweethearts, first loves, you name it. After being so badly treated, we would all move forward after some time. I literally know parents who have lost children (there is NO greater pain or loss possible) and after 3 years they are still hurting of course, but they return to work, they socialize with friends, they LIVE. Because life goes on, no matter what happens. But not idiot Belle. She literally cannot have dinner with a man b/c he's not Archer. She can't kiss anyone. She can't go back to visit family or friends in her hometown. She does NOTHING. EVER.
Then she's forced back b/c Janie has an accident and she learns that Archer is doing FINE. He's no longer suffering from PTSD, alcoholism, abusive, reckless behavior. He's working a steady job. He's helping his family. AND HE'S FUCKING BARTIE ON THE REGULAR. Well good for him. At this point I wanted to chuck my kindle as hard as I could, preferably at Belle's stupid head. HE MOVED FORWARD. But of course the heroine did not. WHY do authors do this? Are we supposed to find it swoony when a hero sleeps with people he doesn't care about b/c he has NEEDS?! And treats them like garbage b/c he doesn't give a shit about them and they aren't the heroine? OMG, HOW DREAMY AND ROMANTIC. Be still my fucking heart. I really hated Archer AND Belle at this point.
On top of this, Archer has been doing well for about a year. He had NO counseling, NO AA meetings for his massive drinking problem that no one seems to acknowledge. And he never once reached out to the woman who he LOVES SO MUCH and DESTROYED. Once they see each other again, they fuck like rabbits immediately. Because idiot Belle is so hard up for Archer's magic peen that she all of a sudden doesn't care that he's been living the good life while she's been suffering and living in an emotional coma for 3 years over his abusive treatment of her. Who cares about DIGNITY when there's DICK to be had?! So she fucks him TWICE, without condoms of course, even though she knows he'd been sleeping with Bartie. What kind of name is that btw? Afterward Belle hates Archer for 4.2 minutes and then is contemplating getting back together with him b/c you know...HIS DICK makes her stupid. And let's be clear here: ARCHER NEVER SAYS SORRY FOR THE WAY HE TREATED HER OR APOLOGIZES IN ANY WAY. He literally is blaming Belle for abandoning him in one breath and then saying he doesn't want her to repeat his errors in the next breath.
The last 25% deserve negative stars. Truly. It was garbage/whiplash/offensively stupid and awful. I couldn't be happy for their HEA b/c I now despise them both and hope they make each other miserable for all of eternity. And for the record, NO BFFS behave like Belle and Jake. Especially if she babysat him growing up and they think of each other like siblings. Not to mention that Belle has been fucking Jake's brother for 7 years. I can't even. So I'm giving this train wreck 2 stars b/c I really did enjoy the first part of the book, but the last part killed it for me and also killed the chances of me reading anything else by these writers. Dnf. sorry i couldn't make my self read it, i didn't like it at all.
I hate see a couple separate after years together and then get back together after years apart, for me it's not working, for me, it's all now or never. I don't believe in second chances , not at their ages, i can understand felling apart in teens years but not in late twentys it killed the story for me,..

Excellent
The book I read just before this dealt with similar subject matter - loving a man with PTSD. The authors depict a much more realistic situation here (speaking as a military wife). The proper amount of weight is given to the disease's impact on the individual and his or her relationships. Parts of this story completely shattered me. This book will hang in my heart for a very long time. Definitely worth reading.

Anabelle and Archer's story started with an all-consuming burning, and deeply in love, then it became toxic and eventually it just fell apart. its a vicious cycle of pain and suffering.
nothing. I still feel empty, hollow. I love her. My god, do I love her, but I'm ruined inside.
Because 7 years ago I saw you and I couldn't control the way my heart quickened in its pace. A pace that when I'm with you, never slows down.
I don't have high expectations diving in to this book, yet I'm bewildered how the storyline flows naturally and impeccably. Its maddening to watch how the seemingly perfect love story burns down right before your eyes. promises, dreams that you build together just wash away. they perfected the art of anguish that you can feel it piercing in your heart. Its a roller-coaster ride of emotion.

I am absolutely rung out. This book was about the best of relationships and the worst. It is also about the times in our lives when we must realize that fighting might not be as easier as once thought. This is a story about two people that have known each other since their youth and grew to love and possible hate each other. This is the story of Archer and Annabelle, and the path they took to get where they are now. This is such a beautiful, heart wrenching, amazing and emotional story that was written beautifully. Thank you for allowing me to read this and write about it.

Absolutely loved this sooooo much!! This story took you on a journey over many years, through Annabelle and Archer's lives, through pain, fear, anger, hurt and sadness!! At one stage my heart was broken in two, l felt for both Annabelle and Archer!! A love story like no other!! This is a must and a novel you won't want to put down!!

As their debut novel, the writing duo of Haley Jenner have completely blown me away with this heartbreaking love story. These ladies are such amazing storytellers that I'm looking forward in reading more of their work. Archer was such a addictive love story that had me hooked from beginning to end. This story was such an emotional roller coaster that was filled with so many twists and turns that I didn't expect. I can honestly say that this romance will definitely give you all the feels! I couldn't help but be immersed into the world of Archer and Annabelle. Archer Dean was such a complex character that would have me loving him one moment and then hating him another. Despite his shortcomings and insecurities, Archer is such a lovable character that you can't help in falling in love with. The chemistry between Archer and Annabelle was off the charts especially in those steamy love scenes. But the drama and banter between these two characters was one the aspects of the story that I found most entertaining. Even though there were moments that I felt frustrated with these two, I truly enjoyed their journey of healing and forgiveness. Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed would have to be the secondary characters that we meet throughout this story. I am very excited to see how their stories will unfold throughout this series. Overall, Archer is a captivating romance and definite must read!!

This book was amazing from the start. I was drawn in immediately. That is what I crave in a book and don't always get. Haley and Jenna made me feel like I knew Archer and Belle. I always know I'm reading a good book when I feel what the characters are feeling. When I'm shedding tears of happiness or sadness. When my stomach hurts with nervousness. I had all of this going on when I read this book. For first time Authors, you did a phenomenal job. You brought out so many emotions in me as I was reading along. The same as when I read M.Robinson, Abbi Glines, Penelope Ward, and S.C. Stephens to name a few. I fell in love with Archer and Belle's love! This was not always a feel good love story. I felt his pain from his PTDS. They way you dug into how he was feeling. I was right there with him. I felt her helplessness. Not knowing how to fix the love of her life. I was her while reading this. You painted such a vivid picture I was able to place myself into the story. I appreciate the lengthy epilogue very much. You built me up, then you shattered me only to heal me in the end.
I look forward to reading the next installment in this series and the full emotional roll a coaster that is sure to come.

Archer is a story for the ages! A truly timeless and heart wrenching story of true love, loss and hope. Haley Jenner are new to me authors and I will absolutely read whatever they release. I'm hooked to their beautiful words.
I guess this can be considered enemies-to-lovers, as Annabelle and Archer meet as kids, but it's much more of a second-chance romance as Annabelle and Archer's love is fast and hard and burns just the same.
Written in three parts, I found myself laughing, sobbing and swooning throughout. I'm going to be honest, part two is utterly devastating and was almost hard to read, but love is messy, right? Real-life situations aren't always bright and shiny.
Without giving anything away, I urge you to read this book! Archer and Annabelle are spectacularly written characters that won't leave my mind anytime soon.

Oh man..Archer and Belle stole my heart!!
I love those broken alpha males and boy Archer is right up there stealing my heart!! All that bossy ass and dirty talking had me turning that air conditioner down to its lowest setting lmao
One of my book besties kept telling me I had to read this book and gahhh I am so glad I did. I read it in about 24 hours..I didn't want to put it down. I may have even snuck a bit of reading in at work lol
New authors for me and they definitely have a new stalker for sure!! Loved Archer and now onto Jake!!

I had really good feedbacks on this book so I decided to jump in, but was left really disappointed.
The major problem being that the author NEVER explained what Archer went through during his contracts. As a reader we are just expected to imagine what happened when he got deployed and accept his PTSD without any background story or details/flashback whatsoever.
The drama aspect of the story is only based on the idea that soldiers at war automatically equals PTSD.
This is like the magic recipe when the author is unable to create characters with a minimum of depth and elaborate facts.
Mainly because the author obviously didn’t made any researches on the subject. You can easily find records and actual stories about deployed soldiers and their experience on the internet.
If you take a good movie dealing with PTSD in the army (like “Brothers”, a 2009 movie directed by Jim Sheridan), you have explicit scenes that are made to explain what the character went through and WHY his deployment affected him so badly.
For a book it’s exactly the same thing.
The reader need to UNDERSTAND the reasons behind a character’s evolution and in this book we had NOTHING except the cliché phrase : “I’ve seen terrible things, I’ve lost my brothers at war”.
As a reader I needed more development than that to feel invested, especially when the couple entered a major crisis totally overnight with Archer treating Annabelle like shit for unexplained reasons.
With the big story void surrounding Archer the drama really felt out of nowhere.
The writing was quite alright but at the end everything felt so rushed, some passages seemed written by a 12 years old and felt so inconsistent with the supposed “dramatic” tone of the story.
For example : “I can’t stop the shit eating grin that takes over my face as I make my way back down the stairs. Baby still thinks about me when she fucks herself.
HELL. FUCKING. YEAH.”
I mean, seriously, Archer is supposed to be 30 and he thinks and sounds like a 9th grader.
I also couldn’t relate to the heroin, I think the author tried too hard to make us feel sympathy and pity toward her, she was depicted as this orphan-with-a-sad-childhood stereotype.
The h also got on my nerves with that inappropriate relation she had with Archer’s little brother. You can’t be physical (kissing on the lips, cuddling) with a “friend” who is 16yo when you are 21, you have to have a minimum of decency, especially when the big brother of your “friend” is your actual boyfriend.
And she even justified it with the excuse “I was lonely growing up so I needed that level of intimacy with a minor” (I mean c’mon...)

I stumbled on this story by happy accident, I saw the cover and loved it. I read the blurb and was intrigued. I knew going in this would be a hard read.

A really good romance that follows Belle and Archer through the years and their many ups and downs. This is a really enjoyable romance with characters that you’ll fall in love with, probably will hate certain ones at times but they’ll win you back over. The chemistry between these two is perfect but their story is so much more than just that. This is my first book by Haley Jenner and definitely won’t be my last
