This one was so much fun! There was a lot going on here and it was all intriguing, humorous, and entertaining. Pepper has a lot on her plate but she takes it all in stride and comes through, learning a little more about her powers as she goes. Looking forward to the next.
I adore this series and this one I think is one of the best. Though I had guessed who might be the murderer the book was such a great story that I kept turning pages and couldn't put the book down. I love Pepper and Axel and all the side stories. I am so intrigued to find out what the next book holds since a new development started at the end of this one. A great fast read.
This book in the series was really fun, the ending had a nice resolve and Pepper shines once again. This is the 9th book I've done and I'm still really enjoying these, I'm going to be lost when they run out.. maybe a reread is in order..
"Southern Potions" is the nineth book in the "Sweet Tea Witches Mysteries" series by Amy Boyles. I can seriously read this series forever. Each book hooks me right from the first sentence and keeps me reading until the very last word. Pepper has definitely grown as a person and has been in some wild situations. She never gives up on those she loves and will try to figure things out. I absolutely love her and Axel's relationship and how Axel is right there with Pepper throughout the book. In this story, Pepper's cousins find out about their dad's and her Grandmother, Betty, had some things happening to her. I enjoyed when Pepper was at her shop and talking to the animals about what was in the potion. I also liked it when Pepper and her cousins pretended they were with the wait staff to get into the school.
This was fun to read and I like\ recommend the series. Pepper is learning some magic and story line moves along. The mystery was entertaining as were the mini side stories.
My one weird peeve, or mumbled complaint is the jelly beans. They must be magic beans because if she drops a few in a drink and then waits til they dissolve she would be waiting a long time. Jelly beans do not dissolve successfully. Now eating them all day long.... More power to her, but dissolving them to sweeten\flavor your drink, not so much. Yes I realize I am being really picky about something that takes place In a book about magic, witches, werewolves and other similar persons, places or things. I don't know why.
Awesome. Light, quirky but with a plot that will keep you guessing. Okay I had entertained the notion of who the culprit was but went for another one as the most likely. Great to renew our acquaintance with the regulars plus some newbies that made the book come alive. The potion competition is apparently a big deal and most of the witches are entering. However when one contestant says she can make a transformation potion without using dark magic, most don't believe her. Her own wish is to make potion to give her and Axel means of communication. Her potion complete (but untested) is ready and waiting on the day of the competition. Only to have things come to a grinding halt when Betty is transformed into a toad, the witch is murdered and the potion has disappeared. Now the task is to find out how to turn Betty back. Communication with her is impossible and the longer she stays as a toad the more she forgets her human self. Plus the twins genie fathers have returned to town but no-one wants to tell the girls what their power is. Can she drop a hint that will open their eyes. Perhaps having white hair isn't so bad? As they investigate they come across more and more likely suspects. Can they find the real culprit and stop the mayhem they want to unleash? Will Betty be transformed back? Will her own potion work? Will the twins be able to deal with their dads and their new powers?
I usually begin my reviews with the most recent occurrence I’ve read about and in this one… I don’t think the Council’s decision will be something bad. I believe that based on the last couple of books that there was a change in a particular Magical that won’t cause havoc like Pepper and Betty are thinking. Well, except maybe that a particular person’s heart may be confused. If you’re reading this series along with me you’ll know what I’m talking about.
So, Betty is a toad. No, I don’t mean that she’s ornery and I’m not using the term to mean she was acting like a jerk. I mean that she is a literal toad and boy oh boy a lot was involved trying to change her back to her human self. And the person who did change her, she was actually granted permission to do so by a sorceress. But goes Who the murder victim is in this story? Yup, the sorceress.
Pepper can communicate with animals, so it should be no problem because Betty can just help Pepper, right? Nope. Betty is in that toad body somewhere, but she isn’t close enough to the surface to remember her human-ness.
And Axel the wizard can’t help on the night where it counts to change Betty back because that night has a full moon. Oh dear. But Pepper has come up with a potion to help Axel in his animal form that may just work. Or not.
It’s a race against time to get Betty the grandma back before she’s Betty the toad forever.
Next is book 10 of 28 in the Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries: “Southern Fortunes”.
Ok I enjoyed this book more than the last. The potion making element is really interesting, and the whole thing with Betty being a toad was kinda weird but it worked. I guessed the twist again- that Anthony was the murderer. Also, they said poppet so many times in this book it started to feel like a fake word. I'm sooo glad Rufus is coming back though, like FINALLYYY. Another thing I liked was that they actually talked about magic school, which I've been wondering about like the wholeee series. Also- can Axel and Pepper just like get over themselves for two seconds? I'm tired of them talking about a MURDER case and then Pepper being like "we gazed at each other. his manly werewolf eyes and his muscles are so handsome blah blah blah". Like come on guys both of you have a fully developed frontal lobe, I think you can move past all of this weird like longing stuff (because you're literally dating). I do feel bad for Pepper though, like she's probably had, what, two weeks, if that without any murders in town? Even all the major holidays have been ruined by a murder and other family drama, like give her a break.

There's going to be a potion contest in the town. A master potion-maker will be the judge and there's a lot of contestants. One of them is a sorceress and that doesn't sit well with some people. She claims to have a potion that can turn a person toad.
It turns out that Betty herself will be the 'test' subject. Yep. She turns into a toad. Now there's a potion that can turn her back but that's kind of hard when the sorceress ends up mysteriously dead and the potion is stolen.
Then there's a witch that seems to be trying to attack Pepper while she's riding her dragon, a school of magic that wants her to teach about familiars and her on-going attempt to find a way to communicate with Axel while he is in wolf form.
There's also a part-genie problem, changes to Pepper's hair color, the animals at the Familiar Place store knowing something that could help Pepper and a dinner that could prove to be most problematic to all those attending, not counting Pepper who could end up quite dead.
This book in my opinion was one of the most humorous installments of The Sweet Tea Witches. In this book Betty Craple is the victim of heinous magic and of course there’s a murder! Every year there’s a potion making contest and this yeah someone has a little too much confidence in their magical brew. The potion contest results in a murder and one of the most powerful witches in all of Magnolia Cove to lose her powers. There are so many fun twists and turns in this installment and we get to really see all of our favorite witches strut their magical stuff. What I also loved was the incorporation of school of magic. I also loved the character development and love story brewing between Axel and Pepper. But I will warn, this book ends and a secondary spin off series begins. I personally am not going to read the spin off series set in a magical town in Alabama. Now hear me out; The Sweet Tea Witch Series has about 25 books in it; and I like to read other books. So, I won’t be starting another series within the same magical universe. But, I absolutely will keep reading The Sweet Tea Witch Series. This was the last installment in the last box set and I thought it was a wonderful reflection of where the story is and all the fun twists and turns it will take in the future.
This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Pepper is a witch who owns and runs a familiar pet store. She matches witches and wizards with her new familiar‘s. Her grandmother is a matriarch of the town and her cousins poop ever lived with also work in the town. The whole town is full of witches and wizards and other supernatural‘s. Peppers boyfriend is a half werewolf half wizard and a private detective. Her cousin Cordelia is the girlfriend of the local sheriff. Since the first day Pepper came to town she has been involved in solving mysteries and crimes another bad things going on in their little town. This book is another mystery that must be solved as Something Happens it is detrimental to pepper and her family. Read on and find out what is going on.
3.5 Oh I wish I loved Pepper Dunn, but she annoys me! She is oddly childish and sheltered for a almost 30 year old women. But I love her family and the town. Her romance with Axle is also a little too...prudish for the world today. But the mysteries are usually always fun to read. So, again I will continue the series. In this book, there is a magical event where all witches can sign up to bring their best potion. A women that seems to be someone no one likes comes up with one to turn a person into a toad, with out black magic. She convinces Peppers Grandmother Betty to be the her volunteer, however once Betty is changed, the women is murdered. So Betty is stuck as a toad until Pepper and Axle can find out how to turn her back before better forgets she is actually a person. This all while Pepper is trying to help communicate with Axel when he is in Werewolf form. Fun short read.
It's time for the New Year's Potion Competition in Magnolia Cove. Pepper Dunn is ready to compete until another murder occurs. Unfortunately, the victim transformed one of her relatives into a toad. And, when the smoke cleared, the potion was gone.
This Witch & Wizard Mystery is splendid. The tale maintains a moderately high level of tension throughout. The tension extends in many directions: to find the murderer, to learn wish-crafting, to restore the toad, and to strengthen Pepper's bond with Axel. Not all of the goals are achieved, but the crime is solved. The ending is sweet.
Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Page-turner. Romantic. Scary. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.
Part of "Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries Books 1-10: Hysterical Southern Cozy Mysteries."
This installment brought a surprising mix of growth, chaos, and pure fun. Pepper and Axel both have some really nice character development, which adds a little extra heart to the story, but the real showstopper this time is definitely the toad-turned-family member. The whole situation spirals into delightful mayhem as everyone scrambles to figure out the solution to turn them back into a human. Between the laughter, the chaos, and the sweet moments, it’s exactly what I love about this series.
I can’t think of a better way for the quirky residents of Magnolia Cove to welcome the new year. Each book in this series somehow manages to top the last, and this one was no exception. It has that perfect balance of humor, charm, and just enough mystery to keep me hooked. I absolutely adore this series and already can’t wait to see what kind of wild adventures the next book will bring.
If you haven't read this series, I strongly recommend it! Any Boyles does a great job of expanding on a basic cozy premise, the one where the down on her luck young woman suddenly finds out she's a witch, gets a new family and solves a bunch of mysteries. This series has so much more to it! There's her family for one, a funnier more dysfunctional group you just can't help but love. Then you have the town itself, which is quirky, and the mysteries! Pepper is as southern as they come and sweet as can be, a bit naive but smart, and incredibly likable. There is a ton of humor, even in the midst of chaos, confusion, and peril. Really a wonderful series!
There's so much to like about this story. Pepper may be the newbie to the family and to Magnolia Cove, but she's all in! She keeps their secrets and imperils herself to rescue them. She works tirelessly to help Axel get what they both want most. She sacrifices a chance for the two of them in a long shot effort for Grandma Betty, and it doesn't even work! The author has created an enchantingly quirky, easy to love heroine and the perfect world for her.The murder mystery didn't hold my attention like the amphibian dilemma did, but this is a fun read with plenty of side mayhem. And wait until you read at the end how the town thanks Pepper for her trouble...!
A good book but this one dragged a bit. It was an interesting plot twist with the spells and the toad.
Amazon synopsis: It’s New Year’s and Pepper Dunn is ready to celebrate. She’s been hard at work creating a potion for the annual Potion-Making Contest. All she must do is present her creation.
Pepper’s plans go awry when a sorceress claims she can turn a witch into a toad—all she needs is a volunteer.
But when the sorceress is murdered and the potion stolen, all Pepper wants is to stay out of it. She’s had enough of murders.
Problem is, one of her relatives was transformed into a toad. With the potion missing, Pepper must act fast to find it before her family member is stuck living as a toad—forever.
It's time for the New Years Lotion Contest. Amelia and Cordelia's fathers come to town and they find out that they have genie blood in them. Amelia's first spell as a genie turns Pepper's hair white. Shelly says she has anew spell that can change a person into an animal without using dark magic and proves it turning No into a toad then back. Surely wants to use Betty to demonstrate her new spell. Betty watches her create to potion and as soon as Betty became a toad Shelly was dead and the potion is missing. Now Pepper and family must find a way to turn Betty by into a human. Funny story good characters.
Love this entire series!! These stories are well written. The males, (Axel and Ruffus), are not generic "Fabio" type characters but are portrayed as both gorgeous yet flawed. The sexual tension is sweet and intense, wholesome but appropriate for the ages of the Characters. Pepper could have chosen either of the males and I would have been happy for her. Pepper makes a great female role model. She is a woman that is strong enough to be independent, soft enough to be lovable and puts others before herself when it matters.
This time we learn about the nearby magic school, further expanding the creative world surrounding Magnolia Cove. Pepper continues to learn and grow stronger as a witch. Axel continues to grow as the supportive boyfriend and private investigator. Amelia and Cordelia get nice surprise visitors that maybe aren't so welcome after all.
The finale was a bit rushed but still a solid ending that was fun to read.
How did Pepper’s world go from a simple Potion contest to a murder investigation? When the most infamous Sorceress comes to town to be in a Potion contest and ends up dead... that’s how. Unfortunately, she dies right after turning Grandma Betty into a toad!! Now times is ticking to find the potion to turn her back and find the murderer. This is the best book in the series so far! Definitely one to put on your ‘to read’ list!
Sweet, loveable, ditzy Amelia has her wish come true, for a while anyway. Pepper entered in her first-ever potion contest, but it had to be suddenly postponed due too the unexpected death of the first contestant, right after she had turned Pepper's grandmother into a toad and before she could turn her back. Mysteries and magic potions weave around the murdered contestant. Great read! 😍
I enjoy the characters in the series enough to look past the easy to figure out mysteries. This one was pretty obvious but Pepper was clueless until it was too late. And I found it ridiculous that Betty put herself in the position to be transformed into a frog; even her explanation was eye rolling as she shouldn't have trusted the witch to abide by the agreement. Regardless, it was still a fun book to read.
A sorceress witch is killed at the potion contest after she had successfully changed Betty into a toad. Of course the potion is stolen and Pepper and Axel have to try and finds the potion to save Betty from being a toad forever. Each step of the way was paved with fumbles and missteps. Excellent read that keeps your attention until the end.
These books are so good! I am really liking this series and these book and the characters, they are so well written and interesting . Even though I started reading this series out of order i am really liking it and I am excited to read the next book in the series and to continue the story and see what happens next.
Amy Boyles did it again. She pulled me in the story and I can't wait to see where she goes with Pepper in the rest of this series. A sorceress is killed at the contest after she turns Betty into a toad. Pepper didn't want to get involved but must do so in order to save Betty. I couldn't put this book down.
Southern Portions (Sweet Tea Witch Mysteries book 9 by Amy Boyles
This was another winner. I highly recommend all her books to everyone who loves paranormal mysteries. She has wonderful characters and great storylines in every book. I can't wait to start the next book. Ordering it now. Diana Romano
Amy Boyles has totally ramped up the drama and amped up Peppers need for training in this one. If it can go haywire or fuzzy this is the book it happens in and I have to admit those shenanigans are hysterical. Keep it coming Ms. Boyles.
Family friendly and certainly one for the collection shelf.
Betty spends most of this entry in toad form. Pepper desperately seeks the guilty potion and does eventually find it. In the meantime, though, she gets to visit the School for Southern Magic, where she has been invited to give a lecture series on matching familiars. Hugh is growing. Cordelia and Amelia deal with wishes.
