Cavo is a hideous monster with a pure heart. Liam, on the other hand, might look like the perfect gentleman, but he's a beast on the inside, and he has an eccentric personality to boot. When Cavo rescues Liam from an unfortunate situation in the forest, the paths of the monster and the beast cross for the first time. Will their meeting be a fleeting encounter or a timeless entanglement? And will Liam succeed in leading the innocent Cavo astray?
Have you ever thought "Man, I wish there was a manga about a middle-aged pansexual thirst-trap and an anthropomorphic demon falling in lust and love respectively" then this is the weirdly specific book for you!
Liam's nearly insatiable lust was a little off putting at first as "horny" seemed to be his one character trait, but as this volume and the next developed we get more from him so it stopped bothering me.
Cavo is precious in a Quasimodo "Out There" sort of way that I always enjoy and kind of reminded me of Elias from Ancient Magus Bride as they both are emotional noobs.
Huh. That was... odd. Though at least it's not Japanese high school students this round.
Continuing this week's Beauty & the Beast explorations, in this version a lonely monster in a woods rescues a passing traveler from menacing thugs; said traveler, a middle-aged, dapper-dressed (in the woods, right) fellow with white hair, purple eyes, and wide-ranging sexual appetites, and the big, but maybe naive, monster Cavo strike up an unlikely friendship. The traveler Liam presents as human, but I'm beginning to wonder. Six chapters isn't enough to get unto/uncover/invent (I'm thinking invent) the angsty backstories yet, so it could play out a number of different ways. I would read another volume just to see where it's going with the characters. Liam, at least, seems a potentially fresh take. Liam is being pursued by hostile someones for reasons not yet revealed, so it may even grow a plot.
Hmmmm... this was pretty, but not for me. I love the concept of this massive, hideous demon being the gentle, sweet one, while the human is the "beast", but I'm a little too soft-hearted for just how unkind Liam is to Cavo (and I don't love how little regard Liam seems to hold for consent). I don't think I'll continue the series, but I can see why others would love it.
✨ Representation: Liam is pansexual, Cavo is queer (unspecified)
With a cover and premise like that, I've been meaning to get to this one for a while and I definitely think it delivered. Everything about this is beautifully strange but very soft and sweet at the same time.
I can definitely tell that this volume acts as more of a set up for the remaining volumes but I adore our characters! I love the juxtaposition of Liam having the appearance of an innocent middle-aged man but really, he's horny as hell and clearly has a mysterious past and then Cavo is this scary-looking monster but he's really just adorably naive and sweet. A golden retriever demon if I ever saw one.
(c/p from my review on TheStoryGraph) This is the start of what I'm sure will be a favorite for me. I like the characters because they are flawed and I like the world that's being built. I am excited to see the plot really get started because it does drag just a tiny bit. Still, really enjoyed it!
TW for this book include: Sexual assault (including attempted rape), Gaslighting, and Blood
This...was not what I was expecting. I think it caters to a few fetishes that I definitely don't partake of. Bonus points for a pansexual main character who is unapologetic about his sexuality, though!
The author really said they wanted to read a boys love fantasy manga featuring a middle-aged man and an inhuman creature, didn't find one, so they just wrote/drew it.
Amazing.
This was really unique and entertaining! Cavo is the sweetest, innocent giant af demon to have every walked around whereas the human man is the scandalous one of the two.
I initially didn't love how horny Liam is in the beginning because those kinds of characters tend to be very one dimensional, but he's slowly growing on me. I'm intrigued by the reason he's on the run and I can't wait for the deflowering of Cavo lmao.
I’ve had my eye on this for some time. I always love beauty and the beast tropes, unfortunately in this our beast is the beauty (or monster) and our beauty is the beast.
It must be a yaoi/manga thing to always have a player in the story... maybe idk... I’m not very versed in them I just enjoy them occasionally. But I can easily hate some so undeserving of our beastly demon, and in this case that was Liam. Anyways I might pursue Volume 2... not to sure yet.
Well this one snuck right into my heart without warning.
The premise of this certainly caught my attention. We have Liam (bold and a little naughty, reminding me of Bardugo’s Nina Zenik on the confidence scale) with his handsome looks and rakish behaviour and Cavo, a ‘scary monster’ with a heart of gold, hitting the wholesomeness charts so high he breaks all measuring devices. It’s so nice to get protagonists that are that bit older, middle-aged, so they’ve lost that at-times-frustrating-glow-of-teenage-naivety-my-goodness-what-are-you-doing veneer that can leave your teeth grinding after a prolonged manga reading binge.
It may be the pandemic and my own lingering lockdown loneliness, but the kindred air of loneliness to both Liam and Cavo (a roving existence for the former, looking outwardly terrifying and living alone in the woods for the latter) really sucked me in. It’s a tangible presence in the story, peppered with humour as Liam pushes Cavo’s boundaries, and that made the warmth of them discovering their desire to remain in each other’s company really glow off the page for me. Plus the social tangos between the two because of their differing requirements... This whole volume just ticked all my boxes.
All in, a real hug in book form. It may be a little niche, but this is top tier for my preferences in romance.
I really wanted to enjoy this and was excited for a story with both a monster and an older person in it. In the end though I feel like didn't quite hit the spot for me.
The world building fell a little flat for me, you can tell there's a fantasy setting but there's nothing really concrete other than a little bit of demon lore. I know that's not the point of the story, but I was hoping for a little bit more.
I'm really not sure how to feel about the dynamic of the two MCs. I get that Liam is supposed to be an ass and that's kind of the point, but ultimately he wound up annoying me a lot. I don't mind complicated characters that aren't nice all the time, and I don't mind characters that are just outright jerks. There's just something about Liam that rubs me wrong.
Cavo is a sweetheart but since he's been sheltered he doesn't really have much of a personality yet. It seems like his main character trait is going to be that he's devoted to Liam without fail and while I think that can be done right it's not really a trope I enjoy that much.
There's a lot of little cute moments in this that I liked a lot! But as a whole I don't think it hit the right notes for me in the end unfortunately.
This one is so, so damn good, like wow! I'm in love.
An older MC, like hes around 40 or 50, and he is SO HORNY - he has fun sleeping with all people, who he likes, hes super charming and quite direct, and hes an egoist, he's really pretty normal, and he's not falling in love. This is so good.
The monster is a real monster, not just a big human - and he is SO HUGE, like holy shit. Hes double the size of Liam. And hes shy. It's so fucking cute, how shy he is, about all of it - touching, kissing. He finally had a human to talk to, of course he falls in love. The monster is just so damn sweet.
Their dynamic is also great - it's so more realistic than the whole school BL mangas, where they fall all over in love within the first chapter. Yes, the monster is falling in love, but for Liam it's well not a nusiance, but he loves how he lives. Free, sleeping with people, bcs its a pleasure for himself. This will be a slower burn than normal BLs.
And it has a fantasy setting AND some mystery backstory, because Liam is being followed and searched for.
I wish there were more storys and mangas with this dynamic and this slow burn and this "Well yes, ur nice, but why should i love you? give me reasons." thing.
I actually quite like this. I'm keeping in mind that this is the first volume of this manga and the author is a novice by their admission, so it will have hiccups along the way. I think what a lot of reviewers don't like is that Liam is a bit of a player, and in their minds, an asshole. He makes it clear he doesn't want a relationship, just sex, and I like that he's clear to his partners. Cavo is a tad naive, and we don't know his backstory, but his attachment makes sense in that he is mistreated and ignored so it stands to reason that he might glomp onto the first person who is nice to him. Overall, I think the author leaves a lot of questions in vol 1 that I'm hoping will be answered in subsequent volumes. I'm thinking there will be magic involved among other things.
Didn't like this at all. When it comes to characters, Cavo was alright and has potential, but I found Liam unbearable. Even if he gets better, I was bored reading this. The humor didn't land, I didn't care for the "romance", and since I don't like the characters, I didn't care for what we see of the adventure plot. Will not continue this series.
Reread 3/15/24: Still agree with my past assessment but I know things get better in the next volumes.
2021: This is an odd first book and I'm not sure how to feel about it. I'll give one more book a try and go from there. Contains dubious consent (non sexual).
I devoured the first volume and I'm trying to pace myself and not immediately devour the next two. Tomorrow, at least. 5 stars for Cavo, -1 star for Liam.
Right away I really love Cavo. What a sweetie. I love his hair, love his curiosity, and would love to give him a big cuddly hug because he could really use one. I've love to be his friend and show him the world and travel with him and hang out in the forest or wherever and just provide unconditional love that doesn't see him as a terrible monster.
I'm not sure about Liam yet. Jury's still out since by the end of this volume, it's still a mystery on what exactly is Liam's deal. Why are people after him? What did he do? Why is he a beast? Why is everyone charmed by him? Does he murder people ? Steal their memories? Working with some kind of forbidden magic? Or is he just sexually ravenous? I also of course don't care for the way he treats Cavo at times but I can't tell if it's because he's genuinely a cold-hearted self-serving twat or he's aromantic or what.
I'm a little anxious to read volume 2 with that in mind. I've only known Cavo for one volume but if anything happens to him, I'm tearing Liam apart and cursing the author/artist.
I wasn't very impressed with this entry volume, though the aesthetics are so appealing to me, I will certainly finish the entire series.
I think there is something surely to be said for the contrast between a worldly character with no apparent soul meeting up with an earnest character who has nothing but love in their hearts. I mean, that's part of the grumpy x sunshine magic. But Liam is quite cold and Cavo is so very innocent, so while I am hopeful there will be satisfying developments in their relationship, it was just kind of meh to read right now. Cavo is quite child-like, which makes me a teensy bit uncomfy as well, considering Liam is a bit pushy about physical touch and doesn't seem to care the ways that makes Cavo uncomfortable.
So, yes, with a lackluster storyline thrown on top, this gets just two stars from me.
3.5 stars. I went into this with super low expectations, since this isn’t a title I hear people talking about. I was pleasantly surprised. I just hope Liam has some character growth later in the series.
Very slow start, but lovely. Sweet Cavo is a wonderful monster, and although Liam is definitely not completely honest, he also sees Cavo as a person, not just a monster.
