Zombillenium Park has never been better. Its popularity reaches new heights following demonic reforms by Behemoth, who then decides to play his property in a very special competition: a witches' Sabbath! Gretchen, Aurelian, and Von Bloodt, meanwhile, have set up an underground escape network in order to offer the damned the chance for reconversion, far from the nine circles of Hell, a dangerous secret operation not appreciated by the park’s board of directors. Determined to clean this out, they hire the services of a formidable enchantress who will turn into an arch rival of Gretchen. Underground as in the air, the fight promises to be epic! The resistance is organized in this fourth volume of Zombillenium, the monstrous bestselling and award-winning series by Arthur de Pins, eagerly awaited by fans after a long hiatus! What are Gretchen’s true intentions? Will the undead succeed in asserting their rights? Who will be the future happy owner of the Zombillenium Park?

I was expecting this volume to have some sort of resolution, or its own internal arc, but that wasn't really the case. By the end of this volume there are more questions than before. Plots are thrown in and never finished. Little bits of world-building are thrown in that never get expanded upon. There's hardly any time for jokes or fun gags, meaning the series has lost all of its charm in favour of some big conspiracy theory corporate espionage plot line that was never the draw for me in the first place.

A Short Sprint to Multiple Cliffhangers

This is the fourth volume in the Zombillenium series, and has only arrived after a very long wait. I enjoyed it well enough, but it didn't bowl me over the way the first three volumes did.

Gretchen and Aurelian are the main characters this time, or at least the action revolves around them. A new main character arrives to challenge Gretchen and to enchant Aurelian.

The story screams along, often with some new element introduced and then abandoned in only a few panels. Except for a very amusing board meeting of the demons that opens the book we don't have time for deadpan throwaways or funny bits of business like we did in the earlier books. There's so much plot to be set out. And after all of that, everything is left hanging. NO SPOILERS, except to note that at the end of the book, which arrives very quickly, every single character is left up in the air, no questions are answered, and lots of new plot wrinkles are introduced.

The art is still arresting and clever. And the characters are fun and appealing. But after one reading you could read the whole book again in ten minutes. That would be fine if this were being published as a monthly comic with maybe annual collections, but it's been three years since the last volume, and I'm not convinced I'm willing to hang on to the cliff that long between books.

(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

I won this book on goodreads. Please don't go by my review. It has been highly praised. I am a grandmother and don't think this graphic novel was for me. You may be different.

->My copy is titled "Royal Witchcraft" across the hat's brim<-

I went ahead and read this before tome three and it wasn't a good idea because I didn't understand enough of the whys involved with they were doing but it still was a great read and the confusion did not effect my rating at all. But I was forced to read the first two over again to get enough of the overall picture- which I enjoyed also. Why did that annoy me then? Because I could have re-read two of any number of incredible books that I own instead. This story is very entertaining but it is by no means legendary and I'm not going to mark that I read them twice in this system because then I will remember that I committed such a personal faux pas.

This new-fangled tech-art is tricky for me to rate because I detest computer assistance... unless it tickles me for some reason which is the (very) RARE case here. For some reason it is endearing and even sexy (Gretchen and especially Deborah from a previous tome) but I simply cannot identify it as the same caliber as 100% human because it's inseparable from the help of a machine and has that "too perfect" look to it. My sensibilities are tender and old-fashioned and I'm damn proud of them so bugger off with your 21st century mechanics you cheaters! I do not care one bit if it is just as difficult or involves tremendous skill.

A larger format, taller than your average picture book, graphic novel.
The reviewer has not seen any of the previous volumes in this series and the story line for this volume would be easier to understand if there was some background information. That does not take away from the colorful computer generated illustrations and humorous individual moments. Michael Jackson’s thriller is even referred to.
The reader starts with a board meeting of red faced, devil horned men and women in charge of drugs, unfair trade, wars, dirty energies and fossil fuels to name a few of their departments. They are discussing souls. One of them, Behemoth, is setting up “ a millennial competition between your devoted children up above…”. The next scene has a girl snowboarding on a broomstick working together with a muscled horned man with wings to free the soul of an amusement park employee. This park, the Zombillenium, uses missing people to fulfill the attractions with zombies. Their operation is interrupted by another snowboarding broom flying witch.
To the reader who is familiar with the series will recognize some of these characters fighting over the park. The whole series will appeal to fantasy graphic novel readers. This is an ongoing series.

Gretchen, Aurelian and former park manager Von Bloodt build a secret escape network to free damned souls, but their work gets disrupted by Behemoth's new plan: A duel between witches.

I read the first three installments of this series quite some time ago and enjoyed the colourful pictures with the macabre story about damned souls entertaining people to gain more damned souls. I like the characters, especially Von Bloodt and Gretchen, who seem very three dimensional and quickly had me invested in their storylines.

My problem with part four is easy to pinpoint: It's too short. We have an annoying cliffhanger, but that's hardly something that I can blame anyone for - as long as there will be more.
Despite having had a break between reading the third and the fourth book, this one had me drawn in very easily in contrast to other graphic novels I recently read, and I am looking forward to read on.

I'd recommend this series to people who like their stories about demons and undead things colourful, or like their shiny bright stories to have their macabre side.

I recieved this book in exchange for an honest review.

My thanks to Papercutz for a digital edition via NetGalley of ‘Zombillenium, Vol.4: Royal Witchcraft’ in exchange for an honest review.

This is the fourth in this popular graphic novel series by Arthur de Pins. I loved the first in the series, which I read a couple of months ago. I have since caught up with Vols 2-3 as well as watching his 2017 animated film, Zombillenium.

In this instalment Gretchen, Aurelian, and former park director Von Bloodt have set up an underground escape network to assist souls who wish to leave. The park’s directors bring in Charlotte Hawkins, a powerful enchantress, to replace Gretchen and shut down this operation. Charlotte and Gretchen quickly become deadly rivals.

It’s full of action and the dark, quirky humour that distinguishes the Zombillenium series. The artwork is stunning. As it ends on a cliffhanger I can hardly wait for Vol.5!

I have been given an arc of this title from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

Although not as compelling as some of the earlier volumes this volume helps add to the story of Zombillenium the monster theme park. Compared to earlier volumes the action felt like it moved too fast but did set itself up for more volumes to come.

After the events of Volume 3 it seems Gretchen and Aurelian have set up an escape network for the souls trapped in Zombillenium. Working with former director Von Bloodt to help take down Zombillenium once and for all. But they are thwarted when a new witch enters the park and pulls Aurelian under her spell. I look forward to the next volume to see what happens now that it seems Gretchen is no longer in charge of Aurelian (or his feelings).

In this 4th volume of Zombillenium, Gretchen and Francis continue to smuggle out theme-park employees right under the nose of the new boss. His new right hand, a powerful harpy-witch scuppers their plans. She brainwashes Aurelian and with it Gretchen's dream to replace Aurelian with her father Behemoth as head of the park thus freeing all the indentured souls including that of her mother. We get a witch bitch fight showdown which is quite fun. However this ends on a bit of a cliff hanger, and sadly we have to wait until the end of January next year to find out what happens next.

The highlight of this one has to be the depiction of hell as a stock exchange, and I love all the different, competing demons with their different departments.

I love the style of this graphic novel series, as well as the ever-present sarcasm. Unfortunately I have only read part one so far so missed on a lot of action in between these two volumes, but it was quite easy to understand what was going on in this sequel. My only complaint is that it was too short (again) - once I was comfortably immersed in the realm of Zombillenium, the story was already over.

(Thanks to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for a copy of the book, all opinions are my own)

'Zombillenium 4: Air Girl' by Arthur de Pins is a graphic novel that takes place in a theme park run by the dead.

Things are going well in Zombillenium Park until Behemoth decides to bring ina witch to fight Gretchen in the skies overhead. Meanwhile in the secret tunnels, the damned have their own fight for freedom going on.

The volume ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but has the quirky charm and good art of previous volumes.

Finally find it in french, and I have to say I prefer reading it in it’s original language !
I loved Lucie, and the witch arguments, Gretchen is my favourite character so I was happy to read more about her, and read more about her relationship with Aurélien.
Loved Bunny, (Leonie) I hope she keeps her ears because she is cute and I like that she is a policewoman.
The french references are as always amazing!
Loved this
