Для тих, хто раптом пропустив найкращу романтичну комедію минулого сезону про те, як хлопчик зустрічає глисти: “Веном” – це про іншопланетну фігню, яка виглядає здебільшого як глисти (крім тих випадків, коли виглядає як зубаста шняга і відкушує голови). Глисти намагаються захопити світ, вселяючись у людей, але один із глистів у своєму початковому світі був повним лузером, знайшов собі в цьому світі такого ж лузера – і тепер вони будуть рятувати світ.
Так от, “Веном. Тремтіння” не суміщається з фільмом, здається, ніяк (крім самого існування глистів, які вселяються в людей і хочуть захопити світ), але якщо не намагатися узгодити таймлайн і персонажів, то це дуже милий арктичний горрор! Зав’язка: дівчина з американської військової бази над полярним колом приїздить на сусідню приватну базу, їй не відчиняють, в інтерком тільки хриплять “Допоможіть”. Вона відкриває двері, й тут виявляється, що всередині бійня й гори трупів, випадково вижив тільки боягуз-учений, який закрився в далекому холодильнику. Солдатка хапає його і драпає геть.
І лише коли вона повертається на свою базу, постає логічне питання: якщо всі або мертві, або замкнуті по кутках, то з ким вона, власне, говорила по інтеркому? і чи варто було туди лізти взагалі?

Was aite.

Daniel Way mostly writes trash and sometimes okay stories. This one is okay. The art is unique atleast and some fun The Thing moments of guessing but everything plays out exactly how you'd expect in the end.

Right away I thought about John Carpenters 'The Thing'. And how thats what they were goin for. With Daniel Way as the writer it would of been very affective. But the art ruined that atmosphere. And just made this volume pointless. Later on reading the whole series I see how it was part of a bigger story, and very thought out storyline.

The art is fun and the story is an enjoyable fan fiction continuing from John Carpenter’s The Thing and proposing the Thing was a symbiote. There’s a Men in Black aspect which is interesting too.

I could see if there was not such a glut of Venom material as there is now where this would be annoying since it is technically not a Venom comic, but reading it now it was refreshing. However, I have completed the series and it is all one long story the progressively goes down hill and spins it’s wheels with no real conclusion, and I cannot really suggest it to anyone.

По суті, це The Thing з марвелівським Веномом у головній ролі. Але, на відміну від, у цьому коміксі інтриги з мізинчик. Є головна героїня, що втікає від Венома, є всі інші, кого Веном заражає та знищує. Тож сюжет прямий, але не дотягнутий хоча б до фільму, на який явно посилається, і навіть додавання до нього таємничої людини в чорному нічого не дає. Можливо, за цим усім було б цікавіше спостерігати, якби не робота художника. Інколи взагалі не розбереш, як дивитись на той чи інший кадр, все переплетено у кольорове місиво з гострими кутами. Персонажі-військові поводять тут себе не як військові, навіть головну героїню немає чим відзначити, окрім її здатності телепортуватися в різні локації - тут підвело планування розкадровки, мабуть. Або ж якісь сторінки були загублені, але я в цьому сумніваюсь.

Переклад українською схожий на сканлейт, але тексту (мілкого тексту невдалим шрифтом!) тут небагато, тому комікс читати недовго. Інформації про те, в який період відбуваються описані події, тут немає. І чи має це значення для такого рівня роботи? Та й взагалі, це біда всіх адаптацій коміксів "Марвел". У адаптаціях "ДіСі" інколи хоча б додаткову інформацію в кінці додають.

Ballsy take on Venom

So basically this is the movie "The Thing," which is okay with me as I love that film. I remember reading this back in the early 2000s and digging it. It doesn't hold up as much as I remember, but it was still a solid read. It was meant to be a long run, so the first 5 issues collected in this edition don't reveal much. Its literally 5 issues of setup, but it at least has some cool characters in it. Patricia Robertson is the main character, and you can tell the writer wanted to mix Alien and The Thing and just make the Venom symbiote, or a version of it, the alien. It works. The Suit is a neat character too. There are no major payoffs in this book, but I got it for $2 and some change and the next two volumes for an additional $6, so it was worth it. Pick it up if you haven't read it. It's not bad.

I'm going to go against the concensus of Venom fans and say this is a really good collection of Venom. Eddie Brock (the usual host) is nowhere to be found in this volume. Instead, we get a horror/sci-fi where a bunch of government scientists have cloned the Venom Symbiote in an attempt to control it. It, of course, excapes, kills Everyone, and ends up finding a new host who's not thrilled with being the new Venom.

It's fun, vastly different from any previous Venom story and Seemed to set up a cool new status quo for the character. If this volume existed in a vaccum, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good Venom story. Unfortunately, there are two volumes that follow this story, and they are both Terrible. So you kind of have to pretend that at the end of this volume, you never see the symbiote again, or, at least, that you won't see it again for a very Very long time.

This was one of the books that really got me into comics as a kid. I loved the hulking Venom design, and still do. Aside from that element though, the art is pretty wonky at times, and the visual storytelling suffers pretty majorly at times. There’s a panel where a character is holding a disembodied finger, and the added dialogue of “It’s a finger.” is very much needed for clarification.
The Thing meets Men In Black is very fun, but the story is pretty rough. The characters are paper thin, and there’s very little in terms of dread or suspense created within the lay up premise. Also, very little of the body horror you’d expect from a send up of The Thing. The colors by Edward Delgado are good though, and he would go on to help shape the style of coloring in big two comics until today.

Primera parte de esta historia basada en la película The Thing de John Carpenter, película que tengo que decir que me flipó hace unos 3 años que la vi y me encanta desde entonces.

Por ahora la trama es muy parecida a la película The Thing, un grupo de militares/científicos en mitad de la nada y rodeados de nieve y con una criatura, en este caso Venom que les va dando caza uno a uno.

Me he leido las páginas en muy poco tiempo y sin darme cuenta de ello, eso habla bien a su favor, es bastante entretenida

It's not a bad idea to turn Venom into a storyline ala The Thing, and this features a number of different factions vying to get to the bottom or control the entity. However, the art style in this book borders on complete caricature, perhaps it was cool or hip when this was released but it seems too exaggerated to effectively convey the story. Colors and backgrounds are good, it's just the character designs I wasn't feeling.

I love Venom, but this story is just very lackluster. The cover art by Sam Keith is epic (he draws Venom in such a unique way), but sadly it has very little to do with the story or art inside.
The plot, although having potential to be interesting is just kind of slow and boring. The art is too cartoony and is sometimes difficult to tell what's going on.
I'll finish the run, but this collection is very "meh."
The cliffhanger was good, btw.

It’s a Venom story by way of “The Thing”. That’s the John Carpenter movie, not Ben Grimm. It doesn’t fit really , in my opinion, with the characterization of the symbiote but it’s a fun story. The only thing really unforgivable here is the racist caricature that is the look of an Asian character in this book.

I liked this. It wasn't the Venom we know, but it was a cool take on the character. This is not a superhero story, but a straight up horror story. It's basically the John Carpenter movie THE THING with Venom as the monster. The art may not be for everyone, but I thought it fit the story well enough. Interesting take on Venom.

Venom as John Carpenter's The Thing is the high concept... and the only concept, alas. Venom kills and copies someone, then sneaks up on someone else, and so on and so on. With none of the inventive visual effects, creeping paranoid horror, or engaging characters of Carpenter's film, what's left is a repetitive and shallow non-story.

Not only was this a rip-off of John Carpenter's famous "The Thing" film, but it was a BAD rip-off. Nothing about this is appealing. Even the art is the ugliest art I've ever seen in a comic book.

If I have EVER seen disrespect for Venom as a character, it's from this complete waste of existence.

Do NOT buy this crap.
