Creatures, conjurers, and...cosplay?

Protect Sefu. On paper it looks simple.

Only I have no idea who Sefu is, much less how to find him or her. And my magic’s not talking. But with demons on the hunt, and fiendish whispers of Sefu being some sort of ultimate weapon, failure could spell apocalypse. One of those demons happens to be an enemy I cast into the Pits, a former vampire lord whose twisted mind drips vengeance. Worse, he knows about my relationship with Detective Vega and her son. Meaning I have much more than Sefu to protect.

In the Order’s absence, I’m scraping together what help I can. Let’s just say that with the hunt for Sefu tracking through a major sci-fi and fantasy convention, my new teammates and I will blend right in.

That is until a shadowy conjurer threatens Epic Con and its thousands of costumed attendees.

A conjurer whose name might be Sefu…

Brad Magnarella writes urban fantasy for the same reason most read it – to explore worlds where magic crackles from fingertips, vampires and shifters walk city streets, cats talk (some excessively), and good prevails against all odds. It’s shamelessly fun.

His three main series, Prof Croft, Blue Wolf, and Maddy Deeds, make up the growing Croftverse, with nearly a half-million books sold to date and an Independent Audiobook Award nomination.

Hopelessly nomadic, Brad can be found in a rented room overseas or hiking America's backcountry.

What do you get when you combine a wizard, a professor, New York City, demons and vampires, the police force, a group of demon hunters with a rock band, and a girlfriend who is a police Lieutenant with a big family of brothers and a young son? Another kick-butt Everson Croft adventure!
Even if you haven't read any of the other Prof Croft or Blue Wolf books, you can slide right in and really enjoy the action and snarks complete with a cast of characters who truly are. But you'll probably want to stick a crowbar in your wallet and get all the others for a really spectacular binge read!
A terrific series!!!

Professor Drift and his Scoobies

Arnaud is back and more evil than ever. Add a fanatical nebbish computer need who thinks he's a wizard, a depressed cat, a goblin in live, and well it is the battle of the century, or in Everson Croft's world it is Monday. Great story, love this series.

Here, the best kind of name dropping:

“He broke into a huge smile. “Ha-haa! I love it!”
“Love what?” I snapped.
“John Constantine, right?”
I played dumb as I kept walking. “Who?”
He hustled to keep up, the shield strapped to his arm pumping back and forth. “C’mon, man. Snarky wizard in a trench coat?” His smile faltered as he looked down at Tabitha. “I don’t remember him having a fat cat, though.”
“You’re one to talk, pork chop,” Tabitha muttered.
Captain America didn’t hear her, though. His eyebrows were working furiously as he tried to peg my costume. “Dresden, then? But his cat’s gray.”
“Look, I’ve gotta go.”
Even Tabitha seemed in a hurry to get away from him.
Panting, Captain America began to lose ground. “Slim?” he called after me. “Verus?”

𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝑮𝒂𝒎𝒆, Prof. Croft, Book #6
by Brad Magnarella

This book was a great read. There were only two reasons I knocked off a star, but we'll address those later.

Plotting and pacing are stellar, flow is very fluid. The proofing and editing were good (not perfect), and for the most part, so was the background research (we'll get to that flaw later). The characters are consistent, while still showing growth and depth. I loved that Tabitha was more involved in this case and look forward to seeing more of her as the series continues. Bumper to bumper action, along with true, and sometimes fatal, danger to characters we've grown to care about. New information on old characters helps deepen reader connections, while new characters are introduced for readers to care about. Interesting interactions with Vega's family keep the everyday human threads vibrant. The ending isn't exactly a cliffhanger -- maybe more a hillock hanger -- but it certainly alerts the reader to more intrigue to come. BTW, I didn't mark off for that as the reader could walk away from the series at this point, satisfied that the main characters are as safe as characters in this world would ever be.

I especially liked that ala Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen King in their movies, or Clive Cussler in his Dirk Pitt novels, Magnarella inserted himself as a cameo appearance in this novel. I saw what you did there, Brad, and I liked it..

So, why did I not give the book 5 stars?

One of the reasons is very personal, so I actually didn't take anything off for this. The mention of Shayne Silvers in the same sentence as authors such as Jim Butcher. (See Kat rolling her eyes so hard it gives her a headache). I will readily admit that I've only once attempted to read any of Silvers' work, the first in the Nate Temple series, 𝑶𝒃𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑺𝒐𝒏. I got it for free, something Silvers was offering as a come on to purchase other of his works. However, it was so riddled with errors, both in historical fact, grammar, and spelling, as well as being the worst bit of misogynistic, entitled tripe I've ever tried to read, that I gave up about 1/4 of the way through. Ugh! I see the novel is now being charged for on Amazon. I can only hope that it has been pulled, proofed and edited, before some poor readers get suckered in to spend their money. As 60 people have liked my review of that book (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) and many others have reviewed it similarly, I cannot imagine why this author seems so popular. Perhaps he is a wizard at mind control? It's definitely not because he attracts discerning readers. The acceptance of tripe such as he writes truly kills any hope for an intelligent and/or literate future. (Sigh) However, as I said, that is my personal opinion, so I took no stars off (but, boy, was I tempted) for Magnarella's poor taste in fellow authors.

What I did take a star off for was for not knowing that an Afrit (eefrit, ifrit, efrit, efreet, etc.), when a female being, is an Afrita. This Arabic entity I've seen described many ways. As a mischievous djinnie in the movie 𝑨𝒇𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒂 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒎 (starring Samia Gamal and Afrid al Atrache https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkEH4...), as an evil ghost whose who was not properly buried or prepared to enter the afterlife (See the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters, pen name of the late Barbara Mertz, who WAS an Egyptologist, so I tend to give her definition credence), and as a djinn. Shrug -- maybe all of them are correct. But there is no question that as Sefu was a female being, she was an afrit𝐚 and her gender should have been so reflected. Tsk, tsk, Brad.

So, I'm not giving up on this series. I still have the last book at this current time on my Kindle, so I'll move on to it. Don't disappoint me, Brad. I actually write reviews.

SO FREAKIN GOOD!!!

I'm over you, Harry Dresden. I don't even know where to begin! Bree- Yark, Mae, Tabitha, Vega and Croft are the perfect team. I don't know how this separate bunch w/ Malachi and the rest are gonna play out. I'm not excited, we'll see. I think too many want to be the leader and there can be only one. 😀
Arnaud. If you're tired of Arnaud, please raise your hand? (My hand is up) Brad, please kill creepy Arnaud and all his mental instability (Zarko) off? FINISH HIM!!!
Dude! Then we have Comic Book Guy, from the Simpson's as a villain. LOL! Like, really dude? For deals? (me lookin' rom side to side) Brad, you shoulda had Croft just B---hslap him.
The entire Epic Con was AWESOME! It was like this whole book was written specifically for me. If I keep going, I'm gonna have to do spoilers. I'll stop here. READ THIS BOOK!!! READ IT!!!

These stories are good and the only reason I don't give 5 stars is because I am able to put them down without feeling compelled to keep reading until the end. I do, however, immediately go on to the next book.

The majority of this episode involves a fantasy com event at a hotel. Croft is challenged to a duel by a wannabe wizard. The challenger's magic does not manifest itself, much to his dismay and ridicule of the audience. That does not curtail his boast that he is the real thing and Croft is a pretender.

Croft is mystified as to how this character does summon demons and other beings from the netherworld so he spends a lot of time figuring this out.

Let us not forget that Arnaud is lurking in the background. He is a lot smarter and more powerful than Croft gives him credit for.

Yet another twist at the ending regarding Croft and Vega's relationship.

I have greatly enjoyed all of the books in this series.
It was hilarious that the author included himself in the story, in a not particularly flattering portrait. The portrayal of SF&F conventions was a bit much, but I still like the story overall.
On the other hand, the old lady with the pet monster is getting on my nerves a little. I would prefer that the author bring back the James character, currently wasting away in Wyoming (particularly given that Croft needs more firepower against the demons).
The regular humans in NYC seem to be extraordinarily stupid in this book, but given the city where it is set, that may not be saying much.

Almost jumped the shark

With half the story read, I was thinking the highest rating I could give this was a three. I had several problems with it. First, it was moving pretty slow. There wasn't much punch at first. Secondly, I thought the author's cameo and the mention of other writers of this genre diminished the story some. Then there was the jumping from first person to third person, which I thought was kind of cheating. It also hurt the flow of the tale. These problems aside, when the story finally takes off, it becomes a very fun ride and the punches become fast and furious. Hopefully the next recovers to the 5 stars I've grown accustomed to.

Croft has been ordered to rescue Sefu but given they are an elemental held in thrall to a magic object, like a djinn to a lamp, Sefu is not going to be helping him do it.

And the holder of the object is a deluded man who thinks he is a magic user. But in the middle of a full on sci-fi convention it’s hard to pick real from cosplay.

Meanwhile Vega’s protective brothers warn Croft off.

this one did not work as well for me. I am also not sure why he is trying to literally resurrect the same vampire bad guy; I mean, I assume it has something to do with the accord and the agreements… but let him go, Brad.

I am going to pause reading the series for the moment.

I'm very happy that Magnarella didn't put the Prof Croft books on hiatus as he threatened to do when he began the Blue Wolf series and I'm pleased with the continued world-building, character development and snark levels of the current storyline, but the truth of it is, like many good and successful urban fantasy series, the Prof Croft books are a wheel and nobody's going to be re-inventing it any time soon. In other words, if you liked Prof Croft books 1-5, you'll like this one too. And I did like it. Professor Croft is an interesting character with a convuluted backstory and a deep bench of supporting characters who are almost as interesting to read about as he is. In Power Game, there's a demon infestation in New York and it spills over onto the Epic Con, a struggling comic and sci-fi convention that seems to have made a deal with the Fae. This allows Magnarella to have lots of meta-fun with his own celebrity and his fandom and as well as the fandom of Shane Silvers and some of the rest of his peer group. Is Power Game reinventing the wheel? Nope, but when the wheel runs this smoothly, why would anyone want to?

Everson Croft matures?

Power Game, Prof Croft book 6

Everson Croft is growing in confidence, magical control and skill, while he is learning to play well with others. His relationships with The Order, The NYCPD, Vega, Mae and Tabitha have matured to the point of becoming symbiotic. As his foes increase in size and strength, Emerson has to learn to trust in others to get the job done.

Brad Magnarella has done an admirable job of character and world building while juggling plot lines and character relationships. I’m looking forward to book seven in the Prof Croft Series.

Good

I liked this but it didn’t grab me like some of the others. The order seems a bit disorganized and has put a flighty older wizard in charge of the messages that don’t seem to get through. Crofts trainer is unreachable in fairy but has left behind a goblin. Croft has to use his army of misfits to battle the demons, fae and fake magic users to avoid the calling of a mythical dragon leader and to keep an elemental out of the hands of the demons. In short, he has to save the world.

I was surprised

I was a little unsure about this series when I first started reading it. I usually don't read male authors. But the more I read the more I enjoyed the stories. Prof Croft reminds me off a grown Harry Potter without the benefits of Hogwarts. You can see him grow as a wizard the plots are ingenious and I like the addition of the team. I am looking forward to the next book.

Read it , if you have low standards. Dresden? Constantine, Verus? Nope, just another shabby wizard in a trench coat, lesser quality wizard. Lame. Writing not so good also, feels like the authors first writing attempts. Characters have flawed logic circuit, must be from all the bashing over the head. Magic system bland, not interesting. Even the cat is inconsistent, like several other characters looks like same character sheet is used by several people.

Have recently begun this series and am loving it - pratically reading one after the other. The Prof is a fantastic character that we learn more about with each book, and the cast of monsters and villains is brilliant.

Loving the interaction with Vega and Hoffman, learning more about his heritage and the 'others' all make for great strong story lines and leaving you wanting more. I'm now on Book 7!

Great , awesome story

What can I say except, Great job once again you deliver a kick ass story. Almost making forget the slow start. I'm glad I stick to the end cuz it was worth it.!! Listen I purchased the entire story books. So that's commitment. Specially so when purchased in advance by reading only the first three books. I already love the story. Great job you never disappoint

More!!!!

I want more now.

While Emerson builds his team an old enemy plot revenge. Magic users without a hint of magic, paranormal cons, Dragon worshippers, and heart sick goblins. What else does a story need?

There are parts that are sadder than previous books in the series. I just feel that's a warning readers should have.

Amazing

Just finished the 6th Prof Croft novel, and the last for now, and I loved it. My favourite by far, even though the other books are fantastic, the characters are developing and new ones are being added to flesh out the team. The story is amazing, no spoilers, and runs along at such a fast pace I couldn't put it down, really looking forward to what comes next.

It's not just Croft anymore. He's put together a team and they bring the laughs along with the firepower. Everson has grown a lot stronger and while I was disappointed that we don't see a lot of new incantations the ways he used them were pretty fun. Still developing plot lines with Arnaud and the greater demonic threat to spin off into the next book. Solid entry in the series.

Oh this is by far the best book I have read to date of the series. The support characters are delightful and quirky and I hope that they get more development in future novels. I can only say this is by and far one of my more enjoyable paranormal authors I follow. Certainly his dig at himself at a Con was hilarious, well done.

Never been much of a fan of split narratives. Doesn’t feel like it adds much to the story besides the word count.

There’s a really good self aware joke that pops up when a con attendee attempts to guess who Croft is. Unfortunately it’s followed by the author inserting himself into the story. This one wasn’t as bad as the last 2. More playful and less trying to take itself seriously.

I noticed that I am finding myself approaching each new book in this series with the attitude of just reading it in order to remove it from my TBR pile and by the end I am immersed in each story. Not sure how the author manages it but I am somehow proceeding to book 7. Beware of authors with this skill who have written long series🤦🏽‍♀️

Tabitha moaned.
“What?”
“I’ve seen the way you work. If this were a book, you’d run around like an insufferable fool for three-quarters of the thing, enduring one beating after another, before your showdown with the big, scary monster. Which you barely manage to overcome. And you think I want to be a party to that nonsense?”

well yeah. Else it will be a very short book!

A great read

With Artaud back from the dead Croft has bigger and badder things to deal with, including finding and saving a fire elemental that the demons are searching for. If they find Sefu it would be the end of the world as we know it. By far my favourite of the series.

Arnaud is back, and he's at least partly demon and looking forward to revenge on Croft. Croft is gathering his team together and he's up to 5. He must survive demons attacking and the fae. Magnarella has spun another harrowing tale for our hero and lets see how he does against a dragon

Good but too much detail

I skipped through a lot of Power Game. Way to much detail. Also tired of the vampire. Kill him off. Like how Prof. Croft has matured and his relationship with Vegas has grown. I hope next book does not go into so much detail.
