* This is PROSE not a GRAPHIC NOVEL!* Alicia McTravers, a young and violent pyrokinetic, is carving a bloody path of revenge through the city. By chance, she meets Violet, her opposite, employed as a 'superhero' by the government. Attempting to overcome their animosity, they start to suspect that seemingly random events are anything but. Alicia has forgotten something important; knowledge that may well prevent the apocalypse. Something evil is waking up, and time is running out.

First off - I don't really like superhero books, the only reason I picked this one up is because I happen to know the author although this review is my complete honest review. Therefore as a book reviewer when you meet someone in daily life who has written a book I felt like I just had to read it (even if it is on a subject matter that I don't tend to read about)
In this book we follow Alicia, a young but incredibly powerful girl. She accidentally meets Violet, equally as powerful but whereas Violet is an official superhero for the government Alicia is the exact opposite. Together they must work to fight the evil that is waking up before time runs out
I wasn't expecting much from this book, I don't like superheros and this book was so chunky I thought it was going to drag so much I was worried I wasn't going to finish it (sorry!). Now admittedly it did take me longer than expected to finish this book however it was because so much was happening I kept having to take breaks to try and digest what had just happened. We are dropped into a world where having superpowers is normal, not everyone has them however if you do then you have the chance to be employed by the government to keep the peace (aka law enforcement). Some however decide to use their powers for evil and rebel against the system. Alicia is leaning towards this rebel side, she will do whatever it takes to get revenge.
In this book we have superhero fight scenes, good vs bad and a little bit in between. There is a mystery going on throughout the book as to what the evil is and it isn't revealed until the very end. There was a lot going on and at times it did get a little confusing however ultimately it does all wrap up in the end and does make sense. I think for a first novel it was really well done and definitely took a lot of work to fit all the pieces together and to make them all tie in well.
The characters felt very real and I think the world was really well built. Everything was described so vividly and I loved reading about the different abilities of the characters. Also something that I do love seeing in books - the characters had flaws, they couldn't continue fighting for hours on end, they did eventually get tired and even though this is a small thing it just made the whole story seem a bit more believable.
Overall although this isn't a very well known book I would definitely recommend it, it is full of superheroes who are realistic, they each have their own personalities and abilities. If you like reading about superheroes and want something a little bit different than just good vs evil then definitely check this book out!
