This book was a lot like The Unwanted Undead Adventurer: Volume 1 in that the protagonist is an undead hero who can't reveal who they are to the wider world as they try to meek out an existence and slowly build a party while they are at it.

That said, this book is an isekai where the other book is not. Not only that, the protagonist follows the route of being over-powered much like other isekai. This isn't a fun over-powered like other books unfortunately, but rather at no point in this entire book did the protagonist ever feel like he was in danger. Everything goes smoothly for him, and by the end point of the novel, he hasn't really changed as a person, nor has he displayed any flaws other than their skeletal appearance. (and in the end, that doesn't hinder him either)

There is also a level of brutality in this novel that caught me by surprise. Rape, more rape, and beatings. Each time these events happen, they are quite brutal, and though that fits a realistic fantasy world, compared to the rest of the book, they feel very, very out of place. So much so that it actually took me out of the story quite hard. It would have been different if the rest of the novel shared the brutality in how things went about, but it didn't. Even the combat, with all it's violence, didn't touch that realism like the rape did.

All in all, there were parts in this novel that were enjoyable. I liked the beastman ninja, and the dark elf warrior, but overall these elements were not enough to win me over completely on the series. I did purchase the second book in hopes that maybe the series gets better, but time will tell. If you are looking for something similar to this book but without the rape, etc, check out The Unwanted Undead Adventurer: Volume 1.

Yet another entry to the crowded isekai genre, Skeleton Knight differentiates itself by having judiciously playing around with the usual tropes without directly using them.

For example, the protagonist claims that he was sucked in to the game that he plays, but interestingly enough there is no convenient game menu to access or some other nifty narrative tool to show it. Additionally, the protagonist seems to never mention specific memories or experiences from the 'real world' and never falls in to the usual trope of showing off his otherworldly knowledge.

Slavery is topic that is explored extensively too, but here our titular protagonist actually works to free them instead and there's no slaves conveniently falling madly enough with him to pledge their life to him or such wise, rescued slaves just go back to their own lives (presumably).

That said, the usage of tropes here are still quite heavy even if it avoids falling in to the worst of them. Our main heroine is definitely quite the charmer, being the exotic dark elf stereotype, but comes with enough character and sass to stand on her.

As far as isekai titles goes, Skeleton Knight is a decent but not ground-breaking read that tends to try and avoid using the worst ideas that plague this genre but still being familiar enough to enjoy a brief fantasy power trip.

Arc wakes up one morning on top of a grassy hill as his main character in a popular massive online RPG - his maximum level PC with skills not being limited to the current active class. In other words, he is massively overpowered. Two things limit his power though. One he appears to be a careful naïve teenager exploring a world very unlike modern Japan. He knows it and tries to keep a low profile. Two, he bought a skeleton skin for his character, explaining it as a curse and using it as the drive for his character to wander around. At least he is wearing full plate and nobody can actually see his face or body. What follows are Arc's first steps in a new world, a rather dark one with racism, slavery and a couple of attempted rape scenes (all disrupted before proceeding beyond the ripping clothes away).

Most of the story is from Arc's perspective, but there are occasional short switches to other characters, mostly the villains. It shows more is going on then meets the eye. Arc might not be in the overarching story yet, things are likely to change. For now it is mostly a slice-of-life type of story of typical length for a light novel.

Characters appear to deviate from the standard templates, but except for Arc we do not stick to other characters long enough to know for sure. I like the main character, and feel his personality helps explaining why he does not just steamroll over the opposition. He keeps his distance from others, but that is because of his curse. When interacting, he is polite, kind and helpful. He also does not immediately rush into a fight except when to directly help others. Still, it might not be for everybody. There are no game mechanical elements despite the cause of Arc's trip.

Still, the MCs power is also the potential weakness of the story. It lacks the light hearted entertainment of similar novels. It makes me a bit worried about future novels. I can handle OP main characters, but only when the story is not about overpowering enemies and as of yet I can see too little of the story to know what direction this is going...

I've been reading a lot of isekai the past year plus, and this is yet another. This is fairly by the numbers and I can see this first volume turning people away. I found myself overall enjoying the read, but wasn't particularly invested. By the end of the book, the various characters and stories start weaving more together and that's when I found my interest rising. This first book is a slow burn basically focused mostly on getting to know the major players, and some world building. While I give this volume 3 stars (more like a 3.25), I look forward to seeing if this series can build upon what it has set up as a foundation.

Life would be so much easier if one were a top-class Holy Knight with ridiculous weaponry, magical abilities and archival knowledge—unless, of course, one is a top-class Holy Knight with no freaking idea where the hell one is or how is one goes about getting back home. SKELETON KNIGHT IN ANOTHER WORLD is a mid-range fantasy isekai light novel that gleefully merges consequential violence with the brittle humor wrought by a guy who, again, has no real clue what he's doing.

Arc is over-powered. Readers know this from the start. He's a hulking mass of shiny armor, possesses an enormous sword of untold strength and has a knack for skill-recall that enables him to cast or call forth spells and strategies for almost every conflict or occasion. Arc, simply put, is a flawless character. Well, technically, he's a flawless character type, and that's where the storytelling of SKELETON KNIGHT IN ANOTHER WORLD is truly at its best.

No cultured consumer of literature enjoys a character who is perfect in every way. Fortunately, Arc isn't perfect; he's naïve, more than a bit ignorant and his tendency to go with whatever works for any given scenario regularly shortchanges him in the long run. If Arc was smart, then he'd be making inquiries of the royalty he saved and he would interrogate the ninja cat girl he nearly scared half to death. And while Arc is kind and sincere, his wait-and-see approach with this strange new fantasy world leaves him empty handed: that princess's kingdom is under siege, in secret, from neighboring lands; that ninja girl is cruising the shadows in an effort to free her kin from slavery.

This novel is one massive self-insert; it's a book that hinges on the eternal what-if regarding gamer life and the mid-range fantasies so many indulge on a daily basis. On this point, it is not at all surprising to find the novel oddly overwritten and dry. A buff knight? With untold magical knowledge? Who is equally charismatic and violent? To admire such an archetype is not uncommon. Arc inspires awe wherever he goes and through whatever actions he takes. He is perfect. Ideal.

It is most appropriate, then, that beneath the veneer of armor and swordplay and magic, the man is nothing but idle bones. . .

SKELETON KNIGHT IN ANOTHER WORLD has a good deal of physical violence, multiple scenes framing sexual assault and a fair amount of greed and depravity. The book also contains an enchanting undercurrent of social apathy that manages to rise to dickish hilarity from time to time. Why, after all, should a super-powered Holy Knight care about being charged with murder when he's so strong he decapitates bodies by accident?

The book's linear storytelling make such random adventures fairly enjoyable. Arc meets all sorts of people as he travels the Kingdom of Rohden—farmers, bandits, elves, nobility, metalsmiths—it is to the novel's considerable advantage that he doesn't settle down and conjure a path forward out of artifice. Arc's ignorance fuels his curiosity, and it is his curiosity that propels the story forward. And for the most part, it works. This is a great novel for those whose desire for dangerously naïve characters has yet to reach its fever pitch.

If you took 'Overlord,' stripped it of the vast majority of its humour, and added a mascot, this is roughly what you'd get.

So, gamer falls asleep at his computer and wakes up as his character, but with more power. Unfortunately, his character avatar is a skeleton with flaming blue eyes in a massive suit of plate armour. He figures, probably rightly, that the majority of the residents of the magical world he finds himself in would be a bit freaked out by a knightly skeleton, so he determines to keep a low profile. That lasts about two minutes, of course...

It's not as much like 'Overlord' as either the cover art or the basic premise might suggest. Here we have a generally nice guy playing a generally good knight, who happens to look like the walking dead. In 'Overlord,' Ainz is a good guy at his core, but pretty much nothing he does has entirely pure goals and he's surrounded by a cast of frankly purely evil subordinates. There are hints here that Arc (our skeleton knight) is afflicted by a similar emotion-dulling effect as Ainz, though it's difficult to see why; Arc's backstory (which he made up) is that he's a human cursed to look like a skeleton, rather than being an actual undead. Whatever.

The first half of the book is kind of tedious. I lie. The prologue is pretty good. A bit cliched, but pretty good. Nice pacing. Some tension. Not bad at all. Then we step into Arc's brain and it slows right down into a drag as Arc establishes himself as a travelling mercenary. Things pick up again later when we meet the elves. There's a regular switch between first person POV as Arc, and third person recounting of the events away from the MC. Under other circumstances, I might say this was annoying, but the third-person prose reads better. I admit that I prefer third-person stories to first, so this may be my own preference speaking.

'Skeleton Knight...' is due out as an anime in April, and I sort of got the idea from the trailers that it was a more comedic 'Overlord.' Maybe it will be, but if that's the case, the screenwriter has done a bunch of work to rewrite things from the novel. I don't think I laughed once. I could see how it could be funny, I just didn't think it was. If it actually tried to crack a joke (and there were some pop culture references; those are supposed to be funny in general), I didn't find them laugh-worthy. I think, given all the dark themes (slavery, sexual assault, political intrigue, racism), 'Skeleton Knight...' is trying to be two things at once, and it's not quite pulling off either.

I may try the second volume to see if this is first volume problems hiding a more readable series, but I couldn't say I'm hugely excited at the thought of reading on.

This is a (Teleported into another world using my Over-Powered Game character). This is one of just a few Japanese Light novel series that are on the "right side" (ethical side) of trying to stop abductions, rapes, and slavery of beast-spirit-kin in another world. The main character is really not described (his personality, his emotional intelligence, values, etc.) Maybe the author does not have words to describe a character that is a "skeleton knight". The themes are for adults, the politics are corrupt and depraved, and yet there is no warning for adult situations and parental guidance for minors and underage Young Adults reading this novel series.
The illustrator includes a map of this other world, includes color illustrations and BW (grayscale) illustrations on the inside. Missing are the character summaries. The stories are fairly straight forward. The action is constant and way too easy for the main character because of his Over-Powered abilities and skills (starts in this other world at level 256)...Although Arc does everything "right", helps out, saves damsels in distress, elf-kids being kidnapped and physically tortured and abused, elf women being raped and such, the subject matter is always a little too violent, too much blood and gore, decapitating bandits, without any kind of remorse or ethical doubts...Where I'm going is that, I think the author is a little too practical for the story's own good. There is substantial world development, a lot of varied characters, but little or no description of the characters themselves... Subject matter is almost all adult oriented even though it is a light novel series, with "anime-style" illustrations that "targets" kids and Young Adults...

So the book opens with a rather strong sexual assault. The rape is barely stopped before consummation by the titular Skeleton Knight who happened upon the bandits. Of course being a generic isekai he's so over powered that a couple of bandits are hardly even an itch to scratch let alone a problem. His one problem -- he looks like a skeleton so is afraid if he takes his helmet off in front of humans he'll have a hard time.

And there you have it -- Skeleton Knight is too strong (physically), his gear is too good, can use magic (that other characters later being described as something they thought was a legend). Because of this strength some of the bad guys he faces have their heads knocked off (literally), skulls crushed under his fists, and other rather gruesome things. Because the book involves slavery of elves and beastpeople of course the sex trade comes into things and so there are more descriptions of it. Not actual sex acts, but a fair bit of naked flesh (or nearly so). And then top it off with the rest of the fantasy world that is... well, generic.

While it didn't feel overly original, it was still mildly amusing. I don't know where the main character can go from here because he's about as good as it gets. Sometimes reading about or playing an OP character can be fun or entertaining -- but it can also get boring after a while. Certainly the author has a bigger story in mind than just what happened in this book. So I'll give it at least one more. But as this point I'm expecting middle of the road.

Verdict: It's ok. I'll read another one or two, but am not expecting it to be stupendous.

♪Just when I thought I said all I can say, I came up with more crap to, tell you today♪

You know when you see a man sitting under a tree and instead of saying that a man is under the tree, you first had the bright idea of telling the audience what a fking tree is like a 6 year old? Well imagine that, AND you're speaking an Asian language, and it's doubly so.
Constantly patting yourself on the back for explaining what's in your organic bacon while the annoyed look on your brunch mate's face grows as they refuse to eat and just have a coffee to try and speed your ass up so you guys can move onto more important shit. Yet, after loosing your line of thought and FORGETTING what you yourself have just said, you proceed to repeat EVERATHANG you've just said. Congratulations, you've just sunk into the shithole that is this light novel and many more like it.

When reading a synopsis now, instead of focusing on the character and plot to see if it aligns with my interest, first I try to figure out whether the author has a brain or not from the grammar. And If I see more than one exclamation mark in the same paragraph, somebody has premature alzheimer's.

No bones about, this one has the skeleton of a good idea. While the character is transported to a new world, a couple of interesting variations are introduced to the process. There is no explanation and no "in game" menu. This does make things different from the usual.

The main character starts off kind of boring. The action around him, gets things moving but the main character really is not setting the world on fire. Honestly, he really needed to be fleshed out more.

That is the second really bad pun and I promise to stop...

The elves and the ninja add a little bit of spice. The scenes describing political maneuvering are, at best, lame. Politics in this type of novel is challenging. The author might want to either tone it down or do some research. The setup is nice. There are sensible, realistic competitors wanting different incompatible goals. How those situations are described is the part that is lacking. Great idea, poor execution.

If you are looking for a Isekai that is a little different, this book might be a good choice. If you are looking for good writing, maybe not.

Good little isekai book. Seems to be inspired by overlord for the land and characters involved but the plot is totally different. Who they wrote for the reader to want to die dies in a part they don't tell you he is one of the many dead in.
The girl on the cover might be Ariane but it is unclear hos they look. She has the closest physical description though. The skeleton dude him being a skeleton dude really isn't important to the plot until towards the end when he is refusing to take off his helmet.

A couple of years ago, I read a digital preview of a light novel where the protagonist died in battle and was reincarnated as a skeleton... a bottom tier monster. I thought this was that book. Unfortunately, it is not. It’s another pedestrian guy-wakes-up-in-his-online-game-world power fantasy. Like Momonga from Overlord he wears a skeleton face and also like that series, he’s grossly overpowered. Given all the tools and wealth he needs to get out each situation, Arc, our hero, rescues some problematic trope damsels, frees elven slaves, and finds himself in the middle of a noble family’s succession power grab conspiracy. Every thing goes according to plan... As expected of the format, combat is sparsely embellished (that’s the responsibility of whomever gets the anime rights apparently) and physical descriptions are limited to an adjective or two with particular attention paid to the bosom of female characters.

Really fun fantasy-themed light novel. This was my first read of an isekai novel and it seems that the trope is that the main character is transported from the real world into a gaming world, but I just enjoyed this novel for the fantasy tropes. It was a straightforward fantasy world and the adventure moves along as expected.

I liked how you learn the world at the same pace as the main character, Arc. He is familiar with the world, and explains what he is seeing to the reader; "It's just like in the game!" The book has typical Japanese quirks such as buxom fantasy chicks described as such, cute Pokemon-esque creatures and some obligatory rapey scenes....(at least the villains get their comeuppance and it's not graphic, just heavily implied). As usual with light novels, it's a quick read and I plan to read additional in the series.

Action, politics and a great story.

Is hard to find original and good stories in this gender. An overpowered main character being transported to an alternate world, tons of novel has been written about, but this one excels among those. The ma I n character is just great, with a cool personality and lot of fun moments. Side characters are nicely introduced and hopefully will be developed in future books. The best part is how to author introduces politics and intrigue, with several plot lines running parallel. This book is a great introduction to this setting and is looking like a really fun read.

Enjoyed this one quite a bit. There is action, but also a slow pace to the main story. I read a lot of reviews talking about rape....maybe i read a different book, but there is no rape, just "attempted" and regarding brutality, yes there is that, but mostly against bad people, so I don't mind. I don't mind the MC being OP either, I know that is a turnoff for some readers. I do hate nobility/government storylines, so I'm afraid that going forward, the plot will turn political. I enjoyed this one, so I will give a second one a try. Fingers-crossed, the politics are kept to a minimum. On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Slightly different from the web version but still good

If like me you’ve read the translated web version (it’s further along the the light novel) you’ll notice slight differences in word choices and also different scenes or altered ones, this is nothing all that unusual but every now and then it jars me. The difference between the two versions is clear in parts however I’d say the alterations for the light novel with this series make a more sense over the web novel, as such I look forward to the rest of the series.

Nothing transcendant, but a nice and light read for my isekai needs. There is some interesting world-building that will thicken the plot as the series progresses, but the story itself is nothing pretentious, following yet another OP protagonist who tries to get by in an unknown world - being strong is good but that's not all there is to life! The element of hiding is realistic and doesn't get too redundant. The writing is simple and not very stylish, but it's easy to read while not being childish. Overall: a good start.

A good beginning

I like the overall story and think it has a interesting premise. I debated buying this book due to the higher cost for probably 4 or 5 months. I am glad I did as it was an enjoyable read. Only thing about the light novels is the length. Would like it if the cost went down some. Will read the next book.

Another classic Japanese anime series.

Yes this is another classic Japanese anime the main character gets sucked into another world and gains all the abilities of his online role-playing game character. Despite all of these clichés the overall story is actually very good and although simplistic it’s very exciting to read.

Not a bad start

I was going to give it fewer stars since it makes the MC look like the only competent person in the story but I really like how it shows the interconnection of characters you see thought.

Pay it forward

I like how Arc actions influence the outcome of the people he directly interacts with and the ones he knows nothing about. I also appreciate how the writer shows how one individual can influence a nation's future without even knowing it.

Can get too descriptive; it does something many authors should avoid, using lots of pronouns. Other than that, really enjoyable story. I became hooked starting at halfway through the book.
