A local businessman’s plane crashes into bogland killing all three occupants… Galway’s detectives investigate.
It’s not long before experts establish that the small aircraft’s engine had been tampered with. From dealing with a tragic accident, senior DI Maureen Lyons is suddenly launching a murder inquiry.
The initial police investigation centres on the pilot, the local property development tycoon, Gerald Fortune. The other occupants, Fortune’s daughter, Emma, and his architect, are seen as unfortunate bystanders.
It turns out that Fortune did not always play fair, and many individuals were left out of pocket by his business dealings. But was that enough to kill? Could there be a different motive at work?
The police inquiries set off a chain of events that lead to an assault, a kidnapping and a whole load of intrigue. Who would go to such lengths to see off the plane’s occupants? Who was the real target? And why?
This could be the hardest investigation yet for Maureen Lyons and her team. And she’ll have to light a fire under the sleepy west coast Garda to catch the killer.
If you enjoy classic whodunnits in the vein of Agatha Christie, you’ll love this series with its sprinkling of Irish wit and the beautiful backdrop of the west coast of Ireland. All of these books can be enjoyed as standalones, or you can read the whole series. The full list of books is, in order of publication:
1. MURDER ON THE OLD BOG ROAD 2. MURDER AT THE OLD COTTAGE 3. MURDER ON THE WEST COAST 4. MURDER AT THE PONY SHOW 5. MURDER ON PAY DAY 6. MURDER IN THE AIR
Murder in the Air is book six in the DI Maureen Lyons series by David Pearson. DI Maureen Lyons caught a case of the death of local businessman and his daughter and architect in a plane crashed. At first, it looks like pilot error until DI Maureen Lyons dig deeper and find out it was murder. The readers will continue to follow DI Maureen Lyons to find out who murdered Gerald Fortune, Emma Fortune and Fionn Devaney.
You can read all the books in the DI Maureen Lyons series out of sequences. Murder in the Air is the sixth book I have read in this series and an enjoyable book to read. I love the way David Pearson portrayed the characters and their interaction between each other throughout this book. I like the description of the settings of this book by David Pearson. Murder in the Air was well written and research by David Pearson.
The readers of Murder in the Air will learn about Garda training programmes. Also, the readers of Murder in the Air will learn about the role of form teacher in schools.
A very good detective story with a sense of humour running through the entire story making it enjoyable. Loved the description of the place and how it mixed with the crime.
Definitely something missing in these stories. Good idea but sometimes a bit of a stretch of the imagination. The characters are pleasant but not strong and although I want to finish to book to find out what happened, I do tend to roll my eyes a little too often to say that I thoroughly enjoy the read. Too much extraneous information that seems to pad out the story, and a little bit too much of the same old lines, from previous books. It would be okay if the novel was completely one off, but as a series, saying exactly the same phrase book after book to describe a character or a region, or a police station....or anything, becomes a little tedious. If we must have an explanation, perhaps the approach could be slightly different in each story.
A developer, his teenage daughter and an architect lose their lives when their sabotaged plane crashes.DI Maureen Lyons and her team must discover who would do such a dastardly deed.
This is a slow-paced story. There are too many characters and I identified the doer early on. Lyons is no much of a supervisor. She lets the newest addition to her team, an educated man with virtually no practical experience. become the odd man out. Her boyfriend and supervisor is not much better. Even though he had exigent circumstances, he couldn't resist bullying his way on a boat and getting physical with the suspect. Compounding the wrong he had a fellow officer back up his version. Yeah, the bad guy was bad and deserved punishment. But police brutality and misconduct go a long way in derailing justice. There are parts that were just boring, like the pilots and ground control communicating back and forth. It is okay but not memorable.
Again, a really good read from David Pearson. Really liked the very interesting story line with lots of detail about airplanes and about the Irish landscape. The interplay between characters was really interesting. In this one the dialogue didn't trip me up nearly as much as previous books in this series. The "introductions" and such didn't seem nearly as detailed, which is good. The story moved along at a good pace.
As this is the 6th in survey that I have read I am disarming the lack of development of the cha raised plot. It was all too easy. I did not believe that the teacher would react the way he did to the threats to his career. The timing did not ring true, the access to resources and suspects all tied up with a ribbon unbelievable. I would hope that Pearson would slow down, develop the plot and characters as he did in early works.
Good book and concept but the timelines in the book need to be checked. Example is we were told the architects wife knew of his death and her sister was with her when the garda rang, but a few chapters later we were told that the garda had to call the sister to the house when he told her.... that also happened the day after the crash?
Also Hays mentioned in an interview with the suspect something he found out later, after the interview.
A few edits needed here and there but a good story

A good mystery. Three people die when a light plane crashes, a father and his teenage daughter, plus anothet man. Investigators find prima facie evidence that the crash was deliberate. Who might have wanted to kill either of the two men? A complex but credible story unfolds as the detectives search.
It starts out with a flight of a Cessna 182 & moves on at a fast pace. The new character hums things up a little but the rest of the crew handles it very well. There is a small surprise with the villian but it all gets rectified in short order. I like this author and the crew of players.
A plane crash with 3 dead and suspicious evidence . A fire destroyed the evidence appears like arson . Seems like bits and pieces . A young female student disappeared in the middle of the night . While parts of the story seem laid back , the crew works diligently to find answers .
Sixth book in series is another five star read. Each of the six has been better than the last. teaming up once again, Maureen Lyons and Mick Hays must solve another improbable murder. Bringing in some new supporting characters help make this read really excel. Maureen takes the forceful read as primary protagonist and controls the plot. A must read in a must read series. Check it out.
This book was fascinating to read. It had well developed characters and plenty of surprises, especially the identity of the killer. I highly recommend it to other mystery readers.
Good characters easy plots to follow. Good series of books if you have just finished a complicated compelling thriller. I do recommend this author and his books to anyone who likes a good honest read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were a good crowd and believable. I liked the couple the way they were cheeky with each other but still professional . I have never been to Ireland but I could picture it through out the story.
A little light reading. No surprise as to “whodunnit” but enjoyable read nonetheless. Likeable characters. It was very much like a BBC mystery. I have another case from this series and will pick up more should the opportunity presents itself.
I love this series, it's well written with likeable characters that are evolving well with each book and the crime stories are interesting and realistic.
Brilliant book, keeps you guessing the whole way through and would definitely recommend for anyone who loves crime mysteries. Can't wait to read the next book!
Another really good read, likeable characters and I appreciate the way their lives and careers move on. Recommended reading for those who like easy to read crime novels.
