Le récit débute le 20 juin 1815, au surlendemain de la bataille de Waterloo.

Emmanuel-Augustin-Dieudonné-Joseph, comte de Las Cases (21 June 1766 – 15 May 1842) was a French atlas-maker and author, famed for an admiring book about Napoleon, Le Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène ("The Memorial of Saint Helena").

Interesant cum autor poate rămâne în analele literaturii grație simpatiei deosebite pe care a avut-o față de un personaj istoric celebru.
Este, pe undeva, relația dintre Las Cases și Napoleon, deși, ca să respectăm întru totul realitatea, istoricul francez își făcuse deja un nume (și, mai important, o avere considerabilă) prin publicarea, sub pseudonim!!!, în Anglia, a faimosului său Atlas Historique (1802).
