Jennifer's Review - 3/12/23
4.5 Stars

Lissa is trying to get her journalism career off the ground when she is given a story. One of the subjects of the story is her high school boyfriend Trevor. She only has one shot to get his forgiveness. To say Trevor is shocked when Lissa enters his office to get his story is putting it lightly. He has never forgotten her and will use this opportunity to see if there is still something there. I absolutely adored this story and how sometimes two people are just meant to be.

4.5 Stars - DiDi's Review - 12/31/11

I started to like Lissa just a lil' bit in SERENDIPITY, but wasn't sure if I could like her enough to want her to have a HEA in her own book, cause, well let's face it, she was a BIATCHHH. In KISMET, the reasons behind her behavior are revealed and by the time I finished I was a total Lissa Fan!

Trevor and Lissa had strong chemistry and feelings for each other while in High School, one bad argument led to a mistake that would drive them apart and have Lissa married to one of the town golden boys. Trevor took off to college to make something of himself. Ten years later their paths cross again, Lissa is divorced and Trevor is a much sought after rich bachelor.

When Trevor sees Lissa for the first time in ten years, he knows he is not over her and wants closure. Lissa has always known she was never going to be over Trevor. They decide to take one weekend to get their closure, only even though their minds said it had to end, their hearts weren't listening.

This short story has the emotional PUNCH of a full length book. I felt my heart breaking for both

Trevor and Lissa. OMG, there was one scene, their last night of the weekend, that I had to get tissue and remind myself I WAS NOT LISSA, because I could feel her despair and her heart breaking. When Trevor met Lissa's daughter, Livvy, for the first time was quite emotional for me too.

AND WHOA!!!!!! I know in the past all of Ms. Phillip's men are ALPHA...BUT as I stated in my SERENDIPITY review Ethan was dominant with Faith and WOWZA Trevor has that dominant side too. Don't get me wrong, it's not full out BDSM DOM type dominant, but they both show a little DOMish traits in the way they take control in the bedroom. I LIKE, I LIKE IT, A LOT!!!

KISMET is a sweet, sexy addition to the SERENDIPITY series and leaves you feeling like you read a full length book instead of a novella. There are tidbits about the residents of SERENDIPITY, but not a lot, most of KISMET takes place out of town.

How I got this book: advanced copy from author

When Carly announced on Twitter that she was releasing a novella set in the town of Serendipity, I got all sorts of excited, asked if she wanted to do some promotion with us, and then nearly fainted when she offered me an advanced look. I loved the town of Serendipity and the folks in it, so this was a super sweet treat for me!

We only had a few moments of page time with Lissa in Serendipity, and she wasn’t exactly portrayed in the greatest light. But I always got a sense that there was so much more to her, and was hoping we would get more time to know her better. What we don’t see is that Lissa has had it rough. Her history in the small town wasn’t easy, and because of one dumb choice in high school, she ruined the best relationship she could have hoped for. Now that she is divorced and working on interviewing up and coming business men, Lissa will have to come face-to-face with the boy who left her behind, the one she let get away.

Trevor took Wall Street by storm and while he hasn’t stopped thinking about Lissa, he refused to let anyone tell him about her either. When she walks into his office to interview him, all the emotions from high school come back and Trevor realizes he is far from over her. But with the vast amount of history behind them, will they be able to come together as adults and admit they let the real thing go all those years ago?

I absolutely adored this story! It’s a short one, but it packs quite a punch in the small time we have with Lissa and Trevor. It’s obvious from the get-go that both Lissa and Trevor are still deeply in love with each other, despite the years and distance. But despite that love, there is also a bit of distrust and uncertainty, especially for Trevor.

I really liked that Phillips had Trevor struggle with his decision to try again with Lissa. He was obviously hurt by the way things ended between them, and yet even after they rekindled their physical relationship, Trevor wasn’t ready for more. I was glad to see him be the one to struggle with trust issues and a little insecurity as to whether or not Lissa would hurt him again. It was real and emotional and I loved that he didn’t hold back in his honesty with Lissa.

Although the story takes place over just a few short days, it feels like there is so much more going on. The short story packs an emotional punch and the tension between Lissa and Trevor starts strong and simmers until it finally explodes. There is a wonderful smexy scene that is not only hot but very heartfelt as well.

All in all Kismet is a wonderful novella to add to the Serendipity series. The connection between Lissa and Trevor is unmistakable and their romance was quick and yet so sweet and romantic. Fans of Phillips and the Serendipity series will want to make sure they get their hands on this novella!
I give Kismet an A

Very enjoyable - but I wish the characters would have gotten a full length book. There was so much more about them - their relationship, the daughter, Trevor dealing with her ex-husband - that I would have loved to have read more about.

But I loved what I read, plus wanting more isn't always a bad thing and maybe Carly will revisit them in future books or another short story perhaps :)

Quick listen. Not a bad romance story with the leads having a past chemistry that is obvious. Entertaining at least.

Lissa was such a bitch in Serendipity that I didn't know why she got her own novella and not Kate. Nevertheless this is a wonderful story of past lovers who eventually find love again.

I understand why Lissa was a bitch. She had a rough life because of one mistake when she was young - she lost her love, she got pregnant and had to marry a jerk early and when she left him, she got nothing from the divorce, a young daughter to raise and working on part time jobs that barely paid rent. What i like about her is that Lissa knows when she is wrong and is honest enough to admit her mistakes. She also worked hard to support her family and achieve her dreams.

Trevor also came from a poor family, loved Lissa but was insecure that he could not provide for her, so he asked Lissa for a little break, then discovered she had a one night stand with her ex and got pregnant. Ouch! I thought it was reasonable that Trevor would be angry and hurt because he was faithful to her and she ruined it. And I disagree with his statement at the last part that he should have not left her and married her even if the kid wasn't his (it probably wouldn't have worked out too). When they met up again, he obviously was shocked (compared to Lissa who had plenty of time to brace herself) at first, but I'm glad he was able to get past his hurt and this time, fight for her (now that they are adults).

What I didn't like a bit was how they broke up for the second time - like they were in high school all over again, with Trevor not sure and wanted some time to think and Lissa jumping the gun and getting angry again without understanding him. I thought Trevor had a valid reason and it was mature of him to take a step back and think of the consequences since this time as he said, continuing this will impact Olivia's life too. And yet Lissa accused him that the main reason was that he couldn't face her daughter because it is Brad's. Uh Hello. If she didn't have sex with his ex in the first place they would probably still be together now. And Trevor didn't say he hated the kid, but being a bachelor to a potential stepdad is a huge step and it must have been scary for him.

The ending was sweet, with Trevor coming back to Serendipity to proclaim his love for Lissa in front of everyone, though I think Lissa should be the one swallowing her pride this time but I guess since Lissa got a full time job in Manhattan, it shows her also meeting him halfway.

Now please, I want Kate and Nick's story!

My Review:

Please let there be more of these little novellas to come for this wonderful town of Serendipity. There are so many wonderful stories to tell in this little town and if they are all as good as this one and the first book, then we NEED them all!

Kismet features the story of Trevor and Lissa. They were high school sweethearts from the wrong side of the tracks, but completely in love. Trevor didn't have the confidence in that love though and decided that they needed to take a break. Lissa, heartbroken and dejected, drank too much and made a single horrible decision that ended up with her pregnant and in an awful marriage. Neither of them ever recovered from those events or the abrupt ending to any possibility of a future for them.

So when Lissa is assigned to interview Trevor for her job ten years later, things heat up between them quite quickly. I love a good angsty love story and this one was PERFECT! So much heartbreak between these two...for both of them. They both made horrible decisions and paid an awful price for that. But what is VERY obvious is that neither of them ever got over their feelings for the other. Now it's just a matter of if they can move PAST what happened to them in the past so that they can have a future.

I really loved Lissa's character. I wasn't a huge fan of her's in Serendipity (no huge surprise there...she wasn't a very nice person), but I just loved her in this. Suddenly all of her actions make so much more sense. One single bad decision on her part which probably only covered a two hour span of her life, ruined her entire future. How can you not feel badly for her especially knowing how much she regrets what happened. She's made the best out of her circumstances and hasn't wallowed which is so admirable, because she has a LOT that she could wallow about.

I love how willing Trevor is to accept that he made some serious mistakes and assumptions about Lissa. He's matured so much over the ten year span and after his initial reaction, begins to realize his mistakes. He's a great character.

And this was quite simply a great novella. I truly loved it!

I loved this novella! When I first read Serendipity, I wanted more stories about the other residents in Serendipity. Glad we got Lissa's story first.

I’ve made it no secret how much I love the Serendipity series by Carly Phillips. I can honestly say, it is my favorite series ever by Carly, and that is saying a lot since I’ve loved all her books. When I read Serendipity, I was hoping we would get stories from other characters in the town, and with Kismet, we get our first non-Barron brother story.

We first met Lissa when she was working at Cuppa Café and was extremely rude to Faith Harrington. She was recently divorced and selling coffee part-time and writing obits for the Serendipity Gazette and waiting for her big break. Luckily, Lissa and Faith found some common grounds and when Faith was ready to tell her story, she gave the exclusive to Lissa, who is now working for The News Journal. Her first major interview was with Trevor Dane…none other than her high school sweetheart, and her one true love.

Trevor hasn’t seen Lissa since he found out she was pregnant with Brad Banks’ child and marrying him. Even though his family still lives in Serendipity, he hasn’t allowed anyone to tell him what is going on with Lissa since he left ten years ago. He finally agrees to give her the interview, and then discovers what Lissa’s marriage has really been like. The attraction is still as strong as it was 10 years ago, and neither can resist the other. Lissa and Trevor are so hot together, but Trevor has to decide if he can accept Lissa’s daughter, who is also Brad’s daughter. Trevor and Lissa are so great together, and it was fun to watch the high school sweethearts fall in love all over again.

I really loved Kismet and can’t wait for my next visit with the characters in Serendipity. The next release in the Serendipity series is Destiny, which is set for release on January 3, 2012.

Lissa Gardelli was working at the coffee shop and writing obits for the local paper until she got a break in freelance journalism. Her assignment is to profile the small-town boy, Trevor Dane, who took himself out of the wrong side of town and made a name for himself on Wall Street. This is the same boy Lissa dated in high school, and the same boy who made their temporary break permanent.

It doesn’t take much for Lissa and Trevor two to reconnect because all those old feelings are still there. The only problem is Lissa's ex, a guy Trevor can’t stand. Because they share a ten-year-old daughter, the ex will always be in Lissa and her daughter's life, and Trevor isn’t sure what to do about that.

I love this Serendipty series so much, and my only complaint is that this book wasn’t longer. I wanted to spend so much more time with this couple. But it's still a sweet, spicy, heartfelt story, and just the thing for when you don’t have a lot of time in your schedule for reading. And once you’ve finished this one, there's more Serendipity waiting for you!

This book definitely lived up to its title! Carly Phillips gives a great story about two lovers that were once meant to be to what is next. These characters have a tangled past that they need to over come. I truly believed that these two would finally become friends to say the least.

Kismet is a sweet and saucy romance story that you itch to read another chapter late into the night. I loved how the characters in this story have so much to overcome, but in the end all is right in their world. Not to say they had to jump throuh some hoops to get there.

If you are looking for a fast weekend read, Kismet is a great story and part of a series that you need to dive into!

This is a wonderful second chance romance. The mistakes we all make as teenagers can haunt us, more so than others. Trevor and Lissa came from the wrong side of town, but had loved each other deeply. After a stupid fight, Lissa got drunk and ended up with her ex boyfriend. Unfortunately she ended up pregnant, and Trevor left town. Ten years later with Lissa trying to get over her bitterness of how bad her ex husband treated her, she gets her chance to write some articles for a well known magazine. Who is her first person she has to interview? It is Trevor Dane, Wall Street financial guru, and Lissa’s first love. You need to read how their first meeting goes and what happens afterwards. I enjoyed the book and encourage you to read it. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.

Trevor and Lissa have a past and it's not a pretty one. This one was fast paced and when I finished it, it seemed like I was missing a few chapters to fully forgive Trevor and how he ended things when they rekindled their love. I still loved this story and I wanted a big epic love story for Lissa. She has gone through so much and despite her no being all that kind to Faith in Serendipity, I could tell there was more to her than her bitchy attitude.

But even saying I wished a bit more explaining for Trevor's part this was still a great Carly Phillips book.

Kismet is book 2 in n the Serendipity series by Carly Phillips written years ago but has been updated and loved both versions!

Trevor Dane and Alissa Gardelli were high school sweethearts until misunderstandings separated them. Now 10 years later, Lisssa who is trying to to take a huge step forward in her journalism career needs to interview Trevor but will he let her?

Emotional, steamy, feeling from the past are stronger, is fate giving them a second chance…only time will tell…

I liked this little story a lot. Even if Lissa is not one of my fav character in the series, I'd liked a whole story for her and his ex-boyfriend.

The thing is that I think that short stories between books should be a particular situation or a scene between already known characters and not a brand new story. That's my opinion.

That said the (short) story was good.

This second chance romance is fast paced but filled with passion, regret, love and forgiveness. Trevor and Lissa’s story is filled with chemistry but also laced with past memories that have anger and hurt brought to the surface. A story that holds you captivated right to the very sweet end.

This was a good read. Lissa and Trevor had a thing together in high school. It ended and she ended up with the guy she eventually married. That turned out to be a huge mistake. Now years later they are given a second chance. Thankfully, this time it all works out and they get their happy ending.

I'll be honest, I kinda hated Trevor. Not really book boyfriend material with the way he acted about Lissa's daughter and then his grovel was basically making a 180 after 2 weeks without any actual emotional growth...

The audio was good. Pippa Jayne and Eric Michael Summerer were both great and I enjoyed listening to them.

Universal

Lissa's life has changed drastically since the last time her high school sweetheart saw her. Now she's in his office to write an article on him. Over the years since they broke up, he's never let his family give him info about her, so he's spent the years thinking something about her and her life that is patently inaccurate. When he realizes he's had the wrong idea about her all these years, he realizes one thing - he still wants her, still loves her. Now to convince her she feels the same.

Lissa's never gotten over Trevor. Seeing him again after all these years is making her realize that and it's going to be hell following him around while writing this piece on him. She knows he's never forgiven her for what happened back in high school, so the last thing she expects is for him look at her with that familiar heat in his eyes. Will she allow herself to fall back into his arms again? Or will the most precious part of her life be the main obstacle in their path?

I love second chance love stories. And this re-release is a prime example of why. It was obvious from their first on page reunion that they still loved each other, but getting to the happiness they deserved was not an easy journey. Trevor had insecurities that all the years and his success had not completely abated, and Lissa was obviously not sure how they could ever make a relationship work, with all the pain that lay in their past. I love this couple and their second chance, and am impatiently waiting for Nash and Kelly's story next, Destiny.

Lissa Gardelli has lived in the small town of Serendipity all her life. Growing up on the “wrong” side of the tracks gave her life lessons that have helped her get through the tough times in life but they have also made her the strong, successful woman she is today. Her biggest life lesson; money does not buy you happiness.

Trevor Dane also grew up in Serendipity and lived on the “wrong” side of the tracks. He’d always thought that Lissa was beautiful and he’d had a crush on her forever. But Lissa was dating Bradley Banks-quarterback, popular, rich; how could he compete with that.

When Lissa and Bradley break up, Trevor decides it’s now or never and he makes his move. He’s surprised and thrilled when Lissa accepts and they begin dating. Their relationship quickly blossoms and they fall in love. Their love is real and true and they spend lots of time together making plans for their future. But Trevor worries too much about the things he can’t provide or give to Lissa, even though she’s never asked for anything. His self imposed feelings of inadequacy start a silly teenaged argument and Lissa and Trevor break up-sending Lissa back into the arms of Bradley Banks.

Unfortunately, Lissa and Bradley’s little comfort session results in a pregnancy and because it was the right thing to do, Lissa and Bradley got married and had their daughter, Olivia. But there was no love. It was a marriage in name only. Lissa put up with ten years of a loveless marriage for her daughter’s sake until she couldn’t take it anymore and finally divorced Bradley.

Now, on her own with a new career thanks to her exclusive article featuring Faith Harrington, Lissa is working for The News Journal and has been tasked with doing a series of interviews on successful entrepreneurial men who’ve had success before the age of thirty. First up on the list is Trevor Dane.
Trevor left Serendipity, went to college and moved to Manhattan. He’s made a name for himself there in the financial world and is an “up and comer”. He’s single, works way too many hours, and really has no personal life to speak of. He visits Serendipity on occasion and while he gets regular updates from his mom and sister, they’ve learned to steer clear of any subject that might include Lissa Gardelli.

So, he is completely unprepared when Lissa walks into his office to interview him for her article. Obviously rattled, he doesn’t know what to say to her. As they make small talk, Lissa reveals that she’s now divorced and that the marriage was a complete mistake. Trevor is flooded with feelings that he’s struggled with most of his adult life. He decides that this might just be the perfect opportunity to finally get Lissa out of his system.

Ten years of separation did nothing to cool the feelings between Trevor and Lissa and they wasted no time in picking up where they left off. But while they both realize that they have something special, it comes down to one thing: are they willing to make the sacrifices necessary in order to make the relationship work. Lissa has a new job and her daughter to consider and Trevor is at the height of his career. Big changes at this time could have negative ramifications. Is their love worth it?

Kismet is a story of love lost then found. It is proof that true love exists and when a love is meant to be it will overcome all obstacles in its path. I enjoyed the additional back story on Lissa who we met in book one, Serendipity (September 2011). Initially, I didn’t like Lissa, but this story put her attitude and personality into perspective for me. I totally enjoyed the premise of second chance love, especially for Lissa who endured so much because she thought she was “doing the right thing.” This is a delightful short and I look forward to Destiny, out in January 2012.

A satisfying and sweet pick-me-up
5 stars

This is the second book in the Serendipity series. Lissa first appeared in the previous book, also called Serendipity but just briefly and, well, she was wasn’t that nice in that book. So this is a fresh start for her as she gets her own story - and it completely stands alone. This story was previously published as Suddenly Love.

Sometimes I’m just in the mood for a short and sweet story - which at 101 pages is exactly what this is. And better is that Lissa and Trevor have a history together so we don’t need to spend pages of the pair getting to know each other. We jump right into our story and the re-acquaintance of our childhood sweethearts.

Lissa was introduced to me in the last book and, as I mentioned, she wasn’t very nice. But I was happy for her to redeem herself and it took no time at all for me to like, respect and root for her. She’s a single mother but much of the story takes place away from home so we get to know her well as an individual rather than just as a mum. I liked that Lissa was equally reserved and feisty and while she might have been the one more in the wrong back in high school - it was never about continually berating her for her mistake.

As a hero, Trevor really runs the gamut of emotions on the way to his happily ever after. He starts off with a visceral reaction to Lissa, before deciding to “get her out of his system”, then it’s onto forever, then back to “this was just a fling” before finally coming to his senses. It was amusing to watch him panic under his feelings for Lissa. But he was also very honest and a really likeable guy.

There was a definite chemistry between Lissa and Trevor, even when they’re just reunited. And when they get closer, it’s electric. There’s enough sex to keep things exciting but, for me, it’s the sweetness of our pair as they discuss their past and their potential future together that made me happiest. Those statements of yearning just made my heart sigh and made me even more convinced that Trevor and Lissa were meant to be together.

I admit that I did want this to end with the fairytale of this being a secret baby story. Completely unrealistic (and not actually necessary) but I do love my fanciful notions. But as it was, this was a completely satisfying romance - even more so since it’s a nice, short story. Trevor and Lissa were the perfect pairing and it was nice to see some more residents of Serendipity that I hope will be getting their own stories in the future. This is the perfect pick-me-up and another winner from the always wonderful Carly Phillips.

Two souls lost to each other only to be brought together years later with a second chance! Lissa and Trevor were high school sweethearts, she loved him fiercely and he did the same with Lissa. Only Trevor had a self esteem issue, he felt he wasn't good enough for Lissa to love, and one fateful night after an argument and break up Lissa ended up drunk and at a party where an old boyfriend took advantage and she ended up pregnant. Heartbroken, Trever left for college and never looked back to Serendipity. Meanwhile Lissa did the right thing and married the father of her child only to realize what a mistake it was and after years of living with lies and affairs she took her child and left. Living day to day and working in a coffee shop to make ends meet, with a part time gig of writing for the local paper, Lissa dreamed of being a journalist, Lissa makes a life for her and her child. A little bitter and not very accepting of people, Lissa gets her big break with an interview of a childhood acquaintance who has a huge story to tell. Many want this elusive interview but Lissa ends up writing the story and it brings her more attention to be able to do the thing she loves. She's given the opportunity to write another big story on three successful men, the first being the one person she gave up a long time ago, Trevor.

Trevor left Serendipity and the girl he loved and never looked back. He never allowed his family to speak of her or her life. So imagine his surprise when she walks in his fancy office in NYC as the person who will be writing this article on him. At first he's not accepting and says no way but after some talk he agrees and when he realizes Lissa's life isn't what he had built up in his mind he's determined to take back what he wants. This time on his terms. But can he accept her child as his own? Can he forgive all the hurt? This is something he has to figure out and determine is this second chance what he's been searching for since he left Serendipity all those years ago.

It's a great second chance love and Lissa and Trevor both overcome some huge obstacles to get their HEA!
