Finally done. It only took me nine months to finish a book supposed to take only three months. But I was using this in conjunction with Duolingo. It was very helpful in detailing the grammer, but as a language guide it didn't give nearly enough practice. And no, I didn't memorize every vocabulary word in it, but it is amazing how many of the words I already knew from Duolingo. I will continue to use it as a grammar reference.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should perhaps mention that I have had this book at least fifteen years and am still nowhere near fluent in Italian. On the other hand, I was a lot more fluent three months after buying it, and the problem is not so much with the book as with my patchy application.

The book is clearly organised and easy to study. The first couple of chapters provide a pronunciation guide and after that it is presumed that you have got the gist. Each chapter comes with a selection of vocabulary, two to four conversations and associated exercises, and an element or two of grammar. With systematic study this book could easily introduce you to all the important elements of a full Italian grammar and enough vocabulary to get by in all non-specialist situations.
