Read it for the #48HourJapaneseReadathon.

Plot thickens in the futuristic police series! 4,5 stars.
Review of the Finnish edition.

The first volume of Akane Tsunemori manga (adaptation of Psycho-Pass anime) introduced skillful but unsure Akane and threw her and the team into their first case. This volume continues straight from where the first left off and then brings in a new case. And everything is connected?!

The first case isn't terribly interesting but it works as a setting to show characters' personalities and group's dynamics. Kogami's unorthodox ways to solve problems is highlighted a lot, paving way for his story which we get a glimpse later as Akane grows more and more interested in him. Which is kinda predictable, of course the guy with secrets and bad attitude still somehow charms!

Most of the volume two is about a case where somebody is stealing virtual avatars in the internet. This is more interestingly built case and the virtual environment also brings some funky visuals that I didn't expect in a serious crime drama. The series already seemed good initially but by the Talisman case I really started liking it. It had intriguing build-up, good pacing and worked well as its own little arc and as a piece of a bigger puzzle.

Character-wise this volume focused a lot on Akane's work vs home persona. At work she's cool and professional but outside of it she's struggling with stress and her feelings. Even though her work is quite different from real-world bureaus', I think many of us can relate and sympathize. She can seem a bit boring at times but I think she's just reserved.

There's a big plot which we get to peek at here but nothing is solved yet, and the biggest reveal is actually about Kogami, which all makes you want to read the next book too. I like that not everything is revealed yet. However, the last chapter in this volume is a bit disjointed as many different plotlines are crammed in it to lay groundwork for things to come.

This series is for slightly older readers and thus has some blood and guts and is quite talk-heavy. Which is not bad at all, quite the contrary, I like more mature series get releases here too. Crime series are aplenty across medias but this has light scifi to make it more interesting. I recommend taking a look whether you've read manga before or not.

The art is very nice, and the problem with print quality that made the first volume a mess is fortunately completely gone: pictures are crisp and clear. There's also a nice colour foldout included.
One thing irked me on translation: when Akane got confused/surprised she said "hä?" and while I don't know what are the Japanese expressions used in those lines, it clashed with the rest of her dialogue. "Mitä?" would've been more fitting.

Thank you for the publisher for a review copy.

The second volume of Inspector Akane Tsunemori ventures into even darker territory than its predecessor volumes, covering episodes 4-6 of Psycho-Pass. Akane continues to be flustered by Kogami, whose mixture of wisdom and brashness proves a headache to his superiors; senior Inspector Ginoza tries to warn Akane from forming relationships with Kogami and the other Enforcers, fearing it will cloud her Psycho-Pass, with little success. This volume spends some time plumbing the heroes' backstories and interactions (including fun scenes hinting at Enforcer Yayoi and tech whiz Shion's sapphic relationship), but the stars here are the criminals, far more compelling than the miscreants we met in Volume One. First up is an angry shut-in who is murdering popular chatroom hosts and impersonating them, a cliched character given depth by a well-imagined Gibsonian world of avatars as displaced personalities, separate from their creators. The volume's final chapter begins the darkest, and best arc of the anime, where popular art student Rikako Oryou begins murdering her classmates for use as hideous "sculptures." Both are being manipulated by a mysterious figure named Makishima, whose motivations are glimpsed at by his quoting Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus and carrying a volume of 1984. It's heady stuff, and this volume spares neither the violence nor psychological terror, ending on a murder tableaux worthy of Se7en or Silence of the Lambs; the narrative finally starts coming into its nightmarish splendor (to borrow Makishima's phrase) as the themes, characters and content start falling into place.

George Orwell. Shakespeare. And Shuji Terayama. And here comes Makishima Shougo. I understand Shougo's hate of 1984-ish life but the unnecessary killings is beyond me.

Despite being labelled as comic for adult (21+), there was heavy censorship for the Shakespeare an case. M&C didn't censor the whole Sasayama's corpse but..ah forget it.

Anyway, I just googled about Titus Andronicus and like wow Lavina? That's so cruel?

OH this got a lot dark, a lot faster than I was expecting! Which kinda makes sense now that I think about it because this was only, what 6 volumes? And it's not like I mind it at all, I love me some good dystopian manga any day. The crimes we were solving this time were super interesting and I love learnign more about these characters
