Mark Romain is a retired Metropolitan Police officer, having joined the Service in the mid-eighties. His thirty-year career included two stints on homicide, and during that time he was fortunate enough to work on a number of very challenging high profile cases.
Mark lives in the county of Essex with his wife, Clare. They have two grown up children and one grandchild named Archie. The family includes two English Bull Terriers and a very bossy Dachshund called Weenie, who, despite being the smallest dog in the pack, definitely rules the house! Mark grew up in North London and is a lifelong Arsenal fan. He is also an avid skier, although he didn't actually start skiing until his early 40s!
In addition to writing, Mark loves going to the theatre, reading as many books as he possibly can, and going for long walks with the dogs. He also enjoy lifting weights.

I finished it…. Is about the biggest positive thing to say - though in truth, I ‘scan read’ loads. Gruesome in parts? Yes, and as a fan of Chris Carter that’s fine. Good story? Yes, though anything remotely connected to Jack the Ripper holds some appeal…..
But……
Overly long by 50%. Sometimes reads like an Organisational Map of Police London. Characters using teems and language that have been unacceptable for decades. Super human cops that make Mission Impossible heroes seem lazy….. And every detail so stretched out it is obviously padding.
Before checking, I knew the book was written by a former Police Officer. There IS a talent for writing and clearly the basis for many great stories. The latter and great, well developed characters make for books that draw readers in and keep coming back. I will try another (five or six books down the line) with great expectations.
This is the first book I read from this author and let me tell you that I loved it! Such a good book with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one. The ending of this book.. come on! I just didn´t expect it! Can´t wait to read other books from this great writer! Amazing job! a must-read!. A fantastic book that has it all!
I happily endorse this serie to any and all who are looking for a thriller enjoyable read and a completely different experience than anyone could imagine on their own. I'm looking forward to reading further Jack Tyler novels from this author. A very good read. I highly recommend Mark's books
Jacks back deserves every one of these 5 stars, it's a great story with an insight only gained from being in the job. Love the characters and the way their relationships intertwine. My only bug bear is the readability faults - generally in the middle, although these could be down to the proof-reading and/or reliance on spell checking. These do not spoil the story though. Fans of Patricia Cornwall's Scarpetta are definitely likely to enjoy this book. It follows all the gore and fine detail of Cornwalls writings.
Jack’s Back delivers a gripping crime thriller that pulls you in from the opening scene. DCI Jack Tyler faces a brutal new killer who leaves a horrifying message at the crime scene and seems to stay one step ahead at every turn. With media pressure rising and fear spreading through the city, Tyler’s determination and intensity make him a compelling lead. The twists come quickly, the tension stays high, and the story races toward a nail biting finish. A sharp and thrilling read for anyone who loves smart, relentless detective fiction.
To say this book is debut book ,the author has wrote a incredible and complex book. If you like detailed police procedures in a book ,this book is for you
One request Mark . Could you put the glossary of acronyms at beginning of the book. I didn't realise it was there and I had to stop reading to look up the acronyms meant . I will watch out for further books about Jack Tyler
This is the first book I have read from this author and thank goodness I stumbled upon this by chance. Excellent factual reference to police procedures by a ex policeman turned author. Just from the first chapter I was hooked and the twists and turns kept my interest throughout. The ending just pure genius, just downloaded the second in the series which I can't wait to start, thank you Mark.
Found it a bit slow at first nearly put it down then bang couldn't put it down a good twist through out discription of some of the murders a bit gruesome but a good read
Long on police procedure low on storyline. And some of the spelling errors made me cringe. I've given two books a go but I can't see myself reading a third.
This is the first book I have read by this author, it certainly won't be my last. The story of Jack the Ripper was was interesting and gripping. I kept reading thinking, just one more chapter. A really good read. Buy it!!!!!!!
