Sizzling Romance: A Quick Read
“His Jewel”is a quick read, almost a novella at 99 pages. Fiery sex revolves around Rex, a self-made captain of industry, and Jewel, an efficient and skilled software designer who works under contract to Rex. *Spoiler Alert*
Kane O’ Neil, Rex’s competitor sets off an ancillary plot thread by trying to hire Jewel away from Rex’s latest security software project. Jewel refuses citing contract clauses. Jewel and Rex quickly become caught up in Kane’s clandestine maneuvers to steal the software and do away with them. The showdown among Kane, his hired thugs, and Rex trigger his seldom called upon but gutsy and colossal fighting skills.
There is not much character development in ”His Jewel” because the story is so short. The dominant - submissive thread in Rex and Jewel’s first intimate relationship baffled me. At the beginning of the relationship, Rex is all macho man not thinking twice about pulling Jewel’s hair, slapping her, and barking out orders. Jewel’s strength and willpower are kept hidden, while superficially she gives in and submits to Rex.
Rex quickly, without reason given, becomes Mr. Nice Guy. Is this because his daughter from a previous relationship is introduced to the plot. Is it entirely her presence which softens Rex’s demeanor? Or is it the strengthening relationship between Jewel and Rex?
Jewel also discovers that one night of unprotected sex with Rex has consequences. Does the future of being a father help to develop Rex’s softer side.? The end of ”My Jewel” arrives all too quickly. I wish that the author had spent more time on improving the characters, especially Rex and Jewel. Focusing on their interaction with supporting characters would have brought sustenance to the story. Overall, the author might have finished with a longer novel.
I received an ARC from the author via BookSprouts and vountered to write an unbiased review.
