Grim Lovelies

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Anouk envies the human world, where people known as Pretties lavish themselves in fast cars, high fashion, and have the freedom to fall in love. But Anouk can never have those things, because she is not really human. Enchanted from animal to human girl and forbidden to venture beyond her familiar Parisian prison, Anouk is a beastie: destined for a life surrounded by dust bunnies and cinders serving Mada Vittora, the evil witch who spelled her into existence. That is, until one day she finds her mistress murdered in a pool of blood—and Anouk is accused of the crime.

Now, the world she always dreamed of is rife with danger. Pursued through Paris by the underground magical society known as the Haute, Anouk and her fellow beasties only have three days to find the real killer before the spell keeping them human fades away. If they fail, they will lose the only lives they’ve ever known…but if they succeed, they could be more powerful than anyone ever bargained for.

I think this one will be very appealing to those on the younger end of the YA spectrum. I'm not sure where my expectations came from, but I was certain this would be darker and more mature than it was, and the failing of those expectations were solely on my end. While the idea was superb, it seems that the story fell a bit short for me, mainly due to the fact that I found this entire book to be mostly a setting up for the following stories that may take place. I think, if this part had been condensed into a novella and utilized as an introduction to Anouk and co, that my attention would have been snagged more thoroughly. All in all, not a bad read, and my first from Megan Shepherd.

Grim Lovelies by Megan Shepherd is the first book in the young adult fantasy Grim Lovelies series. While this is primarily fantasy readers will also come across a bit of romance and mystery mixed into the action.

Seventeen year old Anouk is a Beastie. She spends her days peering out and envying the human world from her place in the captivity of Mada Vittora. Mada Vittora is the evil witch who captured and spelled Anouk and the other Beastie's in her command.

One day however Anouk comes across Mada Vittora's body and realizes that her captor has been murdered. Fearing being accused of the crime Anouk and her fellow Beasties go on the run looking to find out who was behind the crime before the spell keeping them human wears off.

Grim Lovelies was another of those books that kind of contradicted itself as far as the pacing goes. It really didn't take long at all for the action in the story to begin however a lot of it still felt slow paced even while things happened. Perhaps this was due to the fact that I found myself not overly invested in the characters along the way. The ideas were interesting and the way it left off I'm intrigued to know more but for now this was just a so-so start for me.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

A perfect read if you're looking for a fast-paced urban fantasy. There was a literal ticking clock that kept you at the edge of your seat. I loved the concept of the characters, too, turning the Cinderella tale on its head and letting us see things from the perspective of animals-turned-people. And what could be a more magical setting than Paris? Personal side note: the covers for this series are pure eye candy! I'll definitely be reading book 2.

I… don’t remember much about this novel, and that’s honestly the first problem with Grim Lovelies. While the idea of the book is so cool, the end result leaves a lot to be desired.

I will say this though—I’m excited about where it could go. The ending left me with ideas of where Anouk’s story could go next, who she could be. Most of the novel, I experienced her grow from this innocent little beastie. If I have one weakness, it’s watching those sweet, sheltered characters grow into a hardened soldier.

That being said, there isn’t much else I really liked. I mean, there was the idea of witches in Paris and the whole Pretties and beasties thing. Beasties are basically animals turned human and serve Pretties and witches—I think. (re: I don’t remember much about this book.) I felt there were so many ways this book could go, but for more than half the book, it felt like travelling from point A to point B to point C. There wasn’t much action and it was boring.

I could have done without the romance too. The guy, who is still as irrelevant as he was during my time reading Grim Lovelies, was initially friend-zoned but of course, that boring relationship progressed. Guys, there was no chemistry at all. The book could have done without this. The only thing that made up for it—to me, at least—was the fact that I picked up undertones of interest for another character… the villain. So. This is me hoping.

There’s another thing that made me super uncomfortable too. I’m, like, 98% sure there’s that dreaded bury-your-gays trope. From here on out, there will be spoilers for events occurring near the ending.

Remember what I said about Beasties? How they’re animals turned human? Okay, well, Anouk is one of, like 4 or 5? total in her witch’s household. One of them is gay—and he was described as being the lone wolf, coming off as cruel to the others. He wasn’t always the nicest except to the human boy he was loyal too.

Near the end, the Beasties face a terrible fate: going back to their original form. But most of them are okay—just, uh, held hostage by The Bad Guys. The gay character, though, is the only one that dies. Which makes me, a) sigh for a thousand years and, b) so tired. If this is the type of thing that keeps you from reading a book—and understandably so—steer clear of Grim Lovelies.

With all the pretty Parisian culture and witchy stuff this book had to offer, very little was shown. This book had so much potential! I hold out hope for future sequels, maybe foolishly. I wished this was darker, a bit more action-packed, a little less… dull. Overall, 2 stars.

Welcome to the Haute!

This book is: Paris, witches, pastries, blood, fast cars, fashion, Goblins, fairy tales.

This is the story of secondary characters who grew up hearing fairy tales and never realized they were living in one of their own.

My inspiration was the mice-turned-servants in Cinderella. At midnight, Cinderella loses a pretty dress, but the mice stand to lose so much more: They’ve been taken from animal to human, allowed to experience things like laughter and music and love, and for them, midnight means The End. In GRIM LOVELIES, my "beasties" refuse to let midnight come and claim them.

Thank you for picking up this book, lovelies. May a little magic wander off the page and into your own life <3

Well this was a waste of my time!
And I only feel like this because I actually liked the book in the beginning.

At the beginning of 2020 I vowed to myself to focus on quality instead of quantity for my reading challenge of the year. And I've been trying to honour that promise by not picking up stuff I knew were going to drive me crazy. What I didn't count on, however, were good books with potential that turned painfully bad!

Megan Shepherd created an interesting and unique world and I can honestly say that I haven't read the likes of it and I have read all types of stuff!
The characters, their challenges, and the rules of this new world were all a breath of fresh air for me. Something new to get obsessed with.
But the author had to go and ruin it by butchering what made the characters interesting in the first place and a weak plot with the stupidest bad guys in the history of stupid bad guys!

Do you remember the bad guys in children cartoons who were so obvious, had no background or anything to make them exist as a character beyond wanting world domination or some boring shit, and who would stand around doing nothing and laugh at the hero before they got destroyed by them? Yeah, worst!

Here's the biggest problem with the book: the characters!

The world-building was good and it could've improved as we went along, and the plot by itself was not half bad. But the characters were insufferable.
The author writes about them in a way that indicates we should already be caring about them, yet she does nothing to make them likable. They are boring and lack depth. If they were to all die overnight in a gruesome manner I wouldn't bat an eyelash. And the sad part is that they had potential.

We have a character who could have been a good person turned "bad" because of all the hate and blood hungriness she possessed for the villains.
We had a guy who could've literally been our comic relief. The one we love to hate and hate to love.
We had a character who could have been that sidekick and loyal friend we just need to love and protect.
And we could have had a complex grey character we swooned over no matter how fucked up his ways were.

Does this sound exciting? Yes, I think so! But the author takes all those awesome characters and flushes them down the toilet and instead writes them as these cardboards who we should care about because she said so.
And the MC who was interesting for the first half of the book got dragged down with them.

But don't worry, it gets worse. I wish I didn't have to mention the romance, but we must at least acknowledge that boring lump of porridge that was so excruciating to swallow. (I apologize to those who love porridge. Just imagine a badly made one.)

The boy meets girl. The girl sees him as a brother. The boy confesses his love at the very beginning of the book. The girl stops seeing him as a brother like that. And the rest is the most boring and annoying courtship in the entire universe. The boy is so dull and has no personality. He is also a jealous dick who makes out with another person on a whim of jealousy.
He also lies to the girl. We also have no idea what he looks like beside the fact that he has sandy blonde hair.
(Come to think of it we have no idea what any of them actually look like, not really.)
And to make it all worse the girl wastes all her magical power to "save" the damn bitch and fails to save them all because of it which I found totally unnecessary. Basically I hate his guts and wish he were dead!
I really feel like the romance was forced just for the sake of having some love in the book. I gotta say a YA book with no romance can also be interesting. There's nothing worse than shit romance.

The last thing I would like to mention is the writing which was all telling and no showing. It got to a point where I just read the dialogue parts in the last two chapters and could totally follow everything. The book, especially the second half, read like a badly written TV script. You know, the ones where the actors have to explain everything in long "speeches".
I wish we could really experience what was happening instead of hearing about it from the author. Yet again, the plot got so lazy by the end that nothing could've saved this wreck.

I'm not sure if I should continue with the second book, I neither trust the author nor the MC to do well going forwards. And I need my brain-cells for better books.

I really struggled with this book from beginning to end. I was very tempted to DNF this book... but I felt that I deserved to give it an honest go.

The premise of the book was what drew me in. A young servant girl named Anouk, finds her witch master murdered. She is a beastie, which means she has three days to figure out a way to save herself and the other beasties otherwise they will turn into the animals they once were before they became human. They race through Paris and across France to find a way to cast a new spell to keep them human.

I really really really wanted to love this book. But the characters were difficult to connect with. There were too many characters that were very similar and didn't have a unique enough voice to distinguish them other than their names.

They story just seemed to go around in circles as well, the characters kept going back to the same places over and over again.

Sadly, this was a miss for me and I'm not sure that I'll be continuing on with the rest of the series.

How to kill a great premise: YA fantasy edition.

First, let your main character have a very obscure name and quirky personality. Then, throughout the course of the book, make her into the most powerful creature of her kind.

Second, have a weird and rather pointless romance that only adds unnecessary drama to the story.

Third, never really develop the magic system and the world building except to further separate the unique main character.

Next, make the whole plot a trip from one place to another that can be summarised in around a hundred pages.

And finally, kill your only named gay character even though it literally contradicts the tone of the book; because despite all the effort to make this novel dark and mysterious, it really isn't.

This was a very enjoyable read, but it didn't manage to intrigue me as much as I had initially hoped. It might also be that I just wasn't in the mood for reading, but I'm not sure.

The characters are quite lovely but I feel like some of them lacked depth. The story itself is cute, but I recommend it more for younger YA readers.

ARC provided by HMH via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There we have it, folks. My first one-star rating of 2018. I am so sorry and hope I don't offend anyone with this post, but Grim Lovelies was the biggest disappointment of the year for me.

Grim Lovelies is an urban fantasy set in a Paris where there are different classes of people/supernaturals:

1) The Pretties: humans like us who live in the world, existing with their flashy technology and cars.
2) The Haute: The magical elite such as witches and goblins.
3) The Beasties: Animals who were enchanted and turned into humans with the purpose to serve the Haute.

Anouk is a Beastie who serves a powerful witch, Mada Vittora. Anouk also lives with other Beasties: Luc, Beau, Cricket, and Hunter Black. Mada Vittora also has a human son, Viggo. However, one day Mada Vittora is murdered, and the Beasties are now living on borrowed time. You see, once the witch who "made" a Beastie dies, her powers die with her. The Beasties only have three days to find a way to remain human or else they are turned back into their original animal forms.

Grim Lovelies failed at pulling me in from the first page. I was really hoping for more witchy story lines and a stronger magic system. The world building also fell completely flat. There were no explanations about how their magic system worked; it was just there. And even though Anouk is a subservient girl who isn't supposed to be able to do magic, she was able to all of a sudden cast powerful spells without any training at all. It was like she was "the chosen one" and there was no explanation on how she became to be powerful.

The other characters were also just... there. I didn't fall in love with anyone even though they all had so much potential for better character arcs. The gay rep for Hunter Black was so cast over and I really hated what happened to his character towards the end. Also I felt zero chemistry between Beau and Anouk. Their romance was such a failed attempt at friends-to-lovers. It really didn't even need to happen.

Then there's Luc who is our POC rep but he's basically stuck in a giant hand bag throughout the ENTIRE book, so we only meet him much later. Dare I say my only favorite characters were the "villains" or "morally ambiguous characters": Petra (I loved her; she is trans and was the one redeeming character in this entire book), Viggo (he's only funny when he's under a love spell), and Rennar, the main villain. But even then, Rennar was such a weak villain and I didn't even understand why he had to exist other than to just... be the bad guy. He has no back story or purpose other than "wanting power."

I don't know, y'all. I think I just had way higher expectations and I was really let down. I wanted a vast world of beasts and witches, a stronger magic system, and back stories on how this all came to be. The writing and progression felt juvenile, and I think this book would benefit more as a middle grade book. Better yet, I believe some of the scenes and characters could translate well if illustrated in a manga. But it all ends on a cliff hanger, and this just disappointed me even further. I wasn't expecting this to be a series, so that's my bad on my part.

I didn't hate this book and I'm not angry at it. But it just left me feeling so disappointed about so many things. And overall? I was so bored. I got really hopeful around the 50% mark when things finally picked up, but then it all went downhill again.

I hope you all like it more than I did!

Can you remember the mice changed into footmen to conduct Cinderella’s coach? The animals-turned-into-humans have left no names in the many fairy tales where they appear. They remain faceless silhouettes, sentenced to serve the wizards and witches who gave them birth.
In her captivating novel, which I had the opportunity to read pre-publication, Megan Shepherd rights this wrong and finally gives a voice to those who never had one. She invites us to join a small group of runaway metamorphs in their breathless quest for freedom, across a Paris that is both contemporary and magical, glittering and dark. Eventually, she asks a question that concerns us all: what does it mean to be human?

Grim Lovelies is one of the loveliest fantasies I've read in a while! Shepherd's world of witches and beasties, goblins and magic is one of the most fully realized and immersive constructs I've had the pleasure of diving into. Anouk is a worthy and admirable heroine, full of fiery resolve and quiet strength. I cannot recommend this book enough!!!! DYING FOR THE SEQUEL.

I wouldn’t say that I went into reading this with overly high expectations but this book did have considerable hype prior to release. Enough hype that I thought it would be a fairly good read at least. Well. I can honestly say that this book and I were not an adequate match.

With that being said, this isn’t necessairily a “bad” novel as a whole, it just was not something that fit my reading taste. I know a lot of people felt that this novel was action packed and a quick read but for me it was somewhat of an opposite experience. From the beginning (and throughout), I felt the story had an incredibly slow pace and that made it hard for me to really get into the story because I was getting bored from it. I do not DNF books because I need that closure of knowing the ending but with this book, I got halfway through and was seriously tempted to just put it down. Again, not that it was necessarily terrible but because I was bored and I knew that there were better books to be read.

As for the action, I do have to admit that there was a lot going on which you would assume would quicken the pace of the story but I didn’t feel that way. I just could not become truly invested in either the story, the outcome, or the characters.

Additionally, I didn’t expect that this novel would include a romance and I was okay with that. However, this book did in fact have a romance, and it was an incredibly dull one at that. I literally spent half the time I was reading wondering if there was going to be a love triangle introduced because there was no chemistry between the two main love interests. Even after finishing this book, I can’t help but wonder if this couple is ‘endgame’ because they were just so boring together.

I don’t think that I’ll be continuing this series because it is just not the series for me. I think if I read the second novel, it would be with the expectation that I wouldn’t like it and I don’t want to do that to myself.

The premise of this book is supposedly built on fairytales, but I really didn’t get that in the story. It’s its own beast.

This book struggled with trying too hard - I felt like I could see the mechanisms behind the scenes - how the plot would go, etc. There wasn’t enough to truly pull me through the story.

This was kind of okay but I expected more. The characters weren’t anything special, the plot was just okay, and nothing really happened. I was really excited about the concept, but it was just a small let down.

3.5 ... almost 4 stars?

It was different, at times intriguing, it was good and then it became meh. Certain paths were set up in this (Prince Rennar’s character being at the forefront in my mind) and I was so excited for the story to follow that path but then it didn’t and I became so tired with the cat and mouse. The premise is absolutely fantastic, but it fell a bit flat for me. To the point I hoped this was a standalone so everything could wrap up and I could move on. Except it isn’t. I’m not even sure I’m excited about where the story appears to be going.

Anouk herself wasn’t terribly stirring. The attempt to transform her from innocent maid into a powerful leader was okay but not convincing enough. About halfway through the book it was as though Anouk’s character skipped the process of transforming completely and was just suddenly someone different.

The romance in this was sweet but also not terribly compelling. I enjoyed the character Anouk is involved with but really hoped she would take another path that was offered to her. Something more intriguing that I felt would have assisted with the complexity of the story. I really cannot see why the story didn’t go this way as every path was leading to it. Perhaps it’ll come in the sequel?

The most interesting characters in this were Prince Renner, Hunter Black and Viggo. In other words, my love for morally grey characters continues. 😂

I don’t know whether to recommend this or not. It’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it at times, but the last half or so of the book was so meh and all over the damn place that it ruined how much I had been enjoying it (and I had been!).

I don’t know, everyone has different opinions. Give it a shot! I’ll probably still read the sequel to find out what happens but this definitely should have been a standalone.

Megan Shepherd is one of my favorite authors and I knew I had to read this novel. Fantasy is not one of my favorite genres but I really enjoyed this novel, once I got into it. With beasties, witches, pretty’s, royals and goblins, I really got myself in deep with the magic in this novel.

Anouk watched the world from the windows of the townhouse she was imprisoned in. Anouk was a beastie, enchanted by witch Mada Vittora, preventing her to leave, making her a servant, along with many other beasties who were under Mada Vittora powers. Then, one day it happens, the beasties discover the body of Mada Vittora and they realize they need to escape. They all claimed their innocence yet someone killed her.

The beasties know that individuals will be others hunting them down, for they need to find those responsible for her death. As the beasties run, they also know that they are under a time-constraint. With Mada Vittora’s death, her enchantment on them will end in three days. The beasties which are now in human form will return to their beast state unless they receive a new spell. They can’t hide for they need someone to cast a new spell on them. Another witch? Yet, that witch might be looking for them. Who can they turn to?

The more I read this story, the more I couldn’t put it down. The imagination and other fantasy aspect of this novel were entertaining and captivating. Again, I’m not one for fantasy but I couldn’t stop thinking about this novel. The fights, the battle, Anouk’s love for her friends and those who helped, it became a whirlwind of action at times and other times, we caught our breath and mapped out the next plan of action. I feel that the novel showed a commitment, a responsibility that Anouk felt. I can’t believe that Ms. Shepherd left me hanging in the end, just left me hanging……

Now, I can’t wait for the next book in this series to be released. Wait, me excited for a fantasy book to be released, this is a first!

¿La traducción que más he disfrutado hacer desde los libros de Leigh Bardugo? Sin duda. Qué ganas de que lo leáis y flipéis como yo.

I really loved this book!  But it's another one that is going to be tough to review without giving anything away.  I apologize now if this is a mess.

I enjoyed the writing and it the pacing was great.  It was easy to like a lot of the characters, but there were some that I didn't like.  That was kind of the point though.  There were some very questionable characters in the book.  I also really loved the magic system.

Grim Lovelies takes place in Paris, but it's not the Paris we know.  This Paris has a lot of magic.  The Royals are at the top.  Then there are the witches that are powerful.  The Goblins are treated poorly.  There are also Beasties.  The 5 were created by a witch.  She took 5 animals and made them into humans.  These humans, Anouk, Luc, Beau, Cricket, and Hunter Black all serve the witch that created them.  This witch also has a son, Viggo, that gives her the blood she uses for her magic.  In a sense, they are all slaves to Mada Vittora (their witch).   The magic used is either done with blood or with other life, like herbs.  Witches use small amounts of blood, but they can't take a life.  If they do, that comes back to them.

When Mada Vittora is killed, the Beasties must search for someone strong enough to recast the spell that made them human.  It is tied to the witch that created them.  They have three days before they become animals again.  Also, Luc went missing a couple weeks before, so they don't have their typical leader.

The four of them, plus Viggo, go visit another witch that was banished.  During this time, they are tricked by different people, find allies in others, and find out more about themselves and why the Beasties were originally created.

I was surprised by some deaths that made me sad.  I really loved the ending and cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

Thank you to HMH Teen for sending me a physical copy which I read and also Netgalley for the digital arc that I got before the physical copy.  I gave this book 5 stars.  It was fun to read and exactly what I hoped when I first read the summary.

"And it was true, there were rocks and there was smog, but there were also stars. The city was like life itself: good and bad, pretty and ugly, kindness and cruelty all in one. But most important, it simply was. And that felt like a kind of magic too."

I am the Queen of waiting too long to read fantastic books. I’ve had this arc sitting with my other unread books for over a year now. Finally decided to try it out and I am blown away. This was phenomenal.

Anouk is currently content with her life but sometimes wishes that she had more. She is a maid for a Witch who takes advantage of her but Anouk knows no different. She is just happy being in human skin for once. Before all this, she was an animal. The Witch put an enchantment on her and a few others to become human. They are known at Beasties.

The Witch, Mada Vittora holds an extravagant party with Royals attending. At the end of the party, Anouk discovers that Mada Vottora has been murdered and the Beasties are all suspects. But that is the least of her worries. With the Witch who cast the enchantment dead, the enchantment will wear off in a few short days.

Anouk and the other Beasties are now on their way to find another Witch who can cast the same enchantment and keep them human forever.

*I can't say anymore in my description without giving anything away.*

Grim Lovelies was an exquisite read that captured my imagination and let it fly. Everything about this book was original and it stays with you after you finish reading it. It does leave you on a huge cliffhanger and I'm grateful that I have the second book close by. This is the perfect urban-fantasy that you don't want to miss.
