The definitive, lavishly illustrated history of the Green Bay Packers, commemorating the team's 100-year anniversaryNot only are the Packers the only fan-owned team in any of North America’s major pro sports leagues, but Green Bay — population 104,057 — is also the smallest city with a big-time franchise. The Packers are, in other words, unlikely candidates to be pro football's preeminent team. And yet nobody in the NFL has won more championships. The story of Titletown, USA, is the greatest story in sports.
Through extensive archival research and unmatched insider access to players and team officials, past and present, Mark Beech tells the first complete rags-to-riches history of the Green Bay Packers, a full chronicle of the most illustrious team in NFL history. The People’s Team paints compelling pictures of a franchise, a town, and a fan base. No other team in pro sports is so bound to the place that gave birth to it. Here is the story of the Packers and of Green Bay — from the days of the French fur traders who settled on the shores of La Baie in the seventeenth century, to the team’s pursuit of its fourteenth NFL championship.
Featuring essays by Peter King, Chuck Mercein, Austin Murphy, and David S. Neft, The People’s Team is a must-have for fans, old and new, and the definitive illustrated history of the most important team in the NFL.
The history of the Green Bay Packers is really a history of the team, the city, and a history of the NFL'S beginnings to the present day juggernaut that the league and the Packers are today. The Packers, unlike any other professional sports franchise in North America, is owned by the city of Green Bay, it's fans, as well as the state of Wisconsin as well. The Packers are not owned by one person, of that were the case, the Packers would have left Green Bay. The Packers are The People's Team, and this history of the franchise by Mark Beech shows the blue-collar attitude of the Packers, it's fans, and the city and state as a whole. If you love the Packers like I do, this book is an amazing addition to your sports and Packers library.
I HAVE FINALLY FINISHED THIS MONSTER OF A BOOK! AND IT ONLY TOOK ME 359 DAYS!😂
I received this book as a gift for Christmas in 2019. I started the book about a month and a half later and read about a chapter every few weeks, chalked up to an average of a page a day. This book is tall, thick, and has small print that more often than not takes up the entirety of each page. For that reason, and because I read so little at a time (a LOT of information in each chapter to take in and process), it took me almost exactly a year to read. But boy was it like a grand adventure. I am a huge Green Bay Packer fan and reading and learning about the history of the team was so amazing. I love how the book was categorized and written. I didn't find a single typo. And I think everything that could be written about the team was included in the book; I don't think Beech left a single detail out. Thank you, Mark Beech. I was treasure this book always.
Mark Beech has gone deep into the archives to come up with the definitive book on the Green Bay Packers. The great games, the Hall-of-Fame players and the unique connection with the fans are all part of the Packer legend, and they're in this book. Beech, though, goes beyond those well-known highlights to uncover stories maybe even those of us who have been Packer fans for decades weren't familiar with. A massive book, an interesting and easy read, and a glorious walk down memory lane.
I really enjoyed this big book of Green Bay Packers history. It was fun learning about all the history of the team that I started only following as fan in the Farve era. I heard some of the stories, but this really filled in a lot of the history for me. It was really fun to read for me. Go Pack Go!!
... if you're a Packers fan or even a pro football fan. The most startling fact was that Vince Lombardi was a cool personality, deeply respected but not universally loved in Green Bay. At 77, I lived through the glory years of the Packers, but this book offers in-depth history that's new to me.
To be clear, I just ran through the photos, but even that gave me a much clearer picture of the early Packer years in Green Bay. I imagine the text -- there's a lot -- would be fascinating, but I'm just not into the reading thing these days.
Getting to read about my favorite team and its history is great, reading a comprehensive, fully researched history, is even better! A must read for any Packer fan who wants to know the history and story of the Packers. Complete with a pictures and stories, this book is addicting and hard to pit down. Definitely recommend!
