This wonderfully-presented and engaging junior chapter book is told from the POV of Kamal, a rescued tiger and long-time resident of Colorado's Wild Animal Sanctuary. He takes readers on a tiger's-eye-view of the large, professional facility, and explains a new resident's experience from rescue to acclimation to release into their own personal football field-sized habitats.

Along the way, we learn plenty of facts about tigers--even those who consider themselves well-versed in wildlife will likely learn something. We also learn about the troubles that face these magnificent cats, including the problems that are happening right here in the U.S. that are the reason facilities such as the Wild Animal Sanctuary exist. (And not all sanctuaries are created equal, there are also places that call themselves "sanctuaries" that deal in breeding and selling exotic animals and cub selfies/petting; which is not the behavior of true sanctuaries. This is also briefly discussed in the text.) As many Americans learned accidently via a trashy Netflix series, tigers and other exotic, dangerous wild animals are kept as pets and as roadside zoo attractions. These situations rarely turn out ideally for the animals, to put it mildly. A lucky few find rescue and refuge , like those we read about in this book.

The only quibble I have with this book is its inclusion of images of baby tigers being held and fed by humans. I realize this is obviously a necessary part of care when orphaned cubs are rescued and they need to be nursed back to health. However, these images, when taken out of context, also look too similar to pictures captured in "cub petting" schemes--an ugly industry that has resulted in many big cats needing rescue after they grow too large and dangerous to handle. I don't want readers to glance at these pictures and think it would be a fun idea. However, this is less likely in the U.S. at least, now that the Big Cat Safety Act has finally passed.

Tiger Time is about an American rescue program for large cats in Colorado. Kama Einhorn continues her True Tales of Rescue series with one that is so heartfelt and fascinating as it connects to the problems for big cats around the world. Most are dwindling in numbers and that is due to the human race and how we choose to treat these magnificent beings. Well, Einhorn will take us from the rescue, to rehab, to recovery and finally to release in a more managed way than her other books. Most of these cats can no longer live wild, again. So, the Colorado rescue Hope and Haven finds a way to give them as close to natural habitat as they can with the help of community, rescuers, veterinarians, and educators they do everything possible to help the cats learn to be wild cats.

This is another excellent nonfiction book on animals by Kama Einhorn! I loved how the author made the tiger "talk to" us as if we were newly-rescued tigers. She described the rehab process very well, and teaches a tremendous amount about tiger and other big animal rescues!
