[This is a special shout out to plumbers and butt cracks.] ;- )
This short, fun 65-page read turned out much better than I had hoped.
My only other read from Roberts to date was "Forever Under a Rainbow," which left me with a case of the "blah's," but this one was a home run, in my opinion.
At 27, oil field worker Luther has been running from anyone finding out about his sexuality for close to a decade.
His family and old neighbors in his tiny North Dakota hometown can't find out. He just can't let that happen. So he keeps moving from job to job around the US.
But when the water in the oil field trailer where he lives only comes out at a trickle, the oil company sends over a plumber to fix the problem.
So 24 year old plumber Erik shows up to fix Luther's clogged supply line (not a euphemism.) And, oh boy, did he fix that supply line, and how. ;- )
But during the repairs, Luther noticed a provocative ass tattoo of an arrow pointing to Erik's butt crack, so he takes a chance and lets Erik know that he's interested.
The two men don't immediately hook up, which I liked. Instead, they swap phone numbers and begin to text one another, hooking up shortly thereafter.
There was quite a bit of hot sex to be had in this short read.
But as the guys text and hang out more, something else begins to happen. Feelings, which Luther can't bring himself to voice.
Luther's lack of opening up eventually costs him Erik, as he loses his job and Erik sends him on his way to find out who he is and what he wants, which was pretty hard to read, but necessary.
Luther eventually realizes what he *must* have in his life for true happiness and puts in the work to make it happen, so we do get our HEA.
My only niggle was why Erik was written as bisexual. From every indication during the book, it sounded like Erik never even looked at women and was sort of waiting in his ivory tower for his prince to arrive and sweep him off his feet.
So, no, the bisexuality (in the context of this story) didn't make much sense to me and seemed more like the 38th piece of flair on his vest. Dunno, I just found that odd.
But the book was both light and enjoyable, without any unnecessary dramatics stinking up the joint, so this one was a solid 4.5 *I've-come-to-fix-your-sink* stars for me.

Luther has been running his whole life. He's not out to his parents and is not entirely pleased when he inherits his grandmother's house, as it means settling down.
When sexy plumber Erik helps Luther fix his pipes (minds out of the gutter, please), Luther is struck by Erik's delicious plumber crack.
It's a rare man who can pull that off, people!
Luther and Erik bond over hot sex and ... more hot sex.
The MCs actually didn't spend a lot of time together on-page. Most of their interactions were summarized. I'm reading along, and all of a sudden it's "a few weeks later." We're told the men get along great, but we don't actually see it.
Big issues are sort of brushed aside: Luther coming out to his mom; Erik's traumatic past. Also, Erik gets on Luther for not sharing his feelings or living his true self, but Erik does the same thing!
Still a fun, easy read with a satisfying ending.

Posy Roberts is a name I’ve been aware of since my earliest days reading M/M romance. Regrettably, it’s taken me years to finally dip my toe in and try one of her stories. But here we are, and I must say, I really enjoyed the experience.
This 72-page novella covered me warm, hopeful feelings, with the stories two MCs, Luther and Erik, proving to be compelling characters, both laden with a deep sense of loneliness and a quiet determination to make their individual marks on the small chunk of world they live in, each working hard in their respective jobs at the Bakken oil fields of North Dakota.
This wasn’t a hugely eventful book, but I appreciated the quieter, gentler story of these two lonely men falling-in-love at a time and place in their lives that they least expected it but needed so very much.
Next time, I’ll certainly try my hardest to pick up another Posy Roberts book sooner rather than later, considering how much I enjoyed this first reading experience. <3

Occasionally, when I'm in a mood, I just want a softer love story. Bent Arrow is just that. I appreciated that it wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel or be flashy...it's was gentle, low angst, sexy, and entertaining.
Luther left home as soon as he could so he could be free to be who he really is. He enjoys hook-ups without commitment until the day he meets Erik. Erik comes over to clean out Luther's clogged supply line...
...and get his water pressure back up. When Erik's pants ride down, Luther admires Erik's hockey ass and spots part of an intricate and distinctive arrow tattoo, which, after a moment of fear on Erik's part, sparks a dialogue between the two.
I liked that it wasn't an immediate hook-up, instead Erik gives Luther his number, and they get together a few days later. They have hot sexy times and Erik's gone by the next morning. Then they begin texting each other and slowly getting to know another. I really liked that them falling in love is not instant, but not super slow either. There's also a depth to Erik's backstory, which drew me in and I waited patiently for Luther to grow out of his inability to articulate his feelings.
It's not a long story, and it took a couple of chapters for me to get into it, and though there isn't a lot packed in to it, what is there is sweet, enjoyable, hot and pleasurable. This was a lovely Sunday morning read.

I picked this book up because I loved Posy Roberts' Cheeky Hipsters & Jocks novella. Hello manties!! After that saucy little introduction to this author, I had to check out more of her books.
Unfortunately, this was just an okay read for me. The story definitely had lots of potential, but nothing was fully developed. Not the plot and definitely not the characters. Neither Luther nor Erik's histories were fully explained. I never quite understood their motivations and what they were running from and why. If Erik was so close to his family, why did he move away? Why did Luther dislike his parents so much? Besides being in the closet, why did he feel so suffocated by the world? Why did he shy away from responsibilities and commitment?
The story takes place over the span of a few months, yet all the time the MC's spent getting to know each other was generalized and glossed over with a brief sentence saying they texted all day, or that days off were spent together. We didn't get to see any of that.
Also, the emotions in the novella were told to me rather than allowing the words to be felt. Because of this I lost any feeling of chemistry between the MC's and in the end I just couldn't fully buy into their relationship.

I thought this was a sure thing:
#1- I love Posy Roberts
#2- The cover is all sorts of smexy
#3- The blurb sounds like one hot ticket.
Well, for me, this was not a sure thing. Why? What happened? Well….Luther happened. You know what ruffled my feathers from the get-go? How he treated him mom. I hold high regard with how children treat their parents. I think if you study how a person treats their mom and dad, you can learn a great deal about them. Luther was plain mean to his momma. And….she didn’t deserve it. Okay, so maybe she was nipshitting a little bit, but that’s what mom’s do. I’m a mom, I know this. I believe it’s a motherly right.
So, Luther and I didn’t start out on the right foot. Then he continued to push me further away with his attitude towards Erik. Now Erik, I liked Erik. Actually, I liked Erik a lot. I’m going to give this book some extra love because of Erik. What Erik sees in Luther, I’ll never know but that’s not important.
Luther is running around sowing his wild oats. He has no plans to settle down and plant any roots, but when he inherits his grandmother’s house he is forced to make a decision. He has no interest in moving to the old money pit lake cottage….alone. He might change his tune if he finds someone that wants to share this new path with him.
Erik is called to fix a plumbing problem in Luther’s trailer. Luther’s interest is piqued when he sees something not meant for his eyes. He propositions Erik and finds himself challenged with a rebuttal. Erik is not looking for a quick screw but he might agree to a date. He makes Luther work for it. Which is a different sort of ‘working it’ than Luther is used to. I enjoyed how Erik threw Luther out of his element. Erik was good for Luther. Luther is scared of the probability of the R word. He does fast and furious, not long and frequently.
A lot of steam is packed into this novella with a little bit of angst. I’m not big on crack but I do like ink and I love how Luther wanted to help restore the beauty of Erik’s ink.
All in all, I do enjoy Posy’s stories, and I liked this one….enough. Even though I didn’t click with Luther, I did click with Erik and that bumped the story up a notch for me. I’ll let my grudge go with Luther and say, yeah…I think you should check out the story behind this Bent Arrow. I’m thankful Luther helped him restore the gorgeous and significant art and I’m thankful that Erik helped to restore Luther.

Cute story, but really you can only do so much in 65 pages. It's hard to connect too much with the characters in that amount of time. I felt for Luther and his overbearing mom who wanted him to find a nice girl and settle down. I liked Erik and how he convinced Luther to stop hiding. The story was a bit rushed, but again it's only 65 pages. 3.5 stars rounded up because I like the cover :)

I read Bent Arrow in a night, it’s written so well it was quick and easy to me to follow the story. No surprise since I discovered Posy Roberts with Silver Scars and I realized she is very talented author. There were different things I loved in this short story too. First her characters, well defined and developed, with some baggage on their shoulders to make them more real. Characters with scars to erase thanks to the love of their partner. What I especially found beautiful was the journey Luther went through, a simple one, because there is no drama or angst in this story. But still seeing this young man changing during his time spent with Erik was unexpected in a story of just 65 pages long and so welcomed. He slowed down his life and finally started taking care of himself and settled down in his grandma’s house with the man he’s in love with. Often in books so short the relationship is rushed using the sex, while in Bent Arrow I was so glad to see Luther and Erik know each other better with texts, dates, sex too sure, but it wasn’t the main way used to bring the MCs together.
There are some emotional parts I don’t want to talk about but they were the icing on the cake. They could have been handled differently and the story would have been too heavy to be enjoyed. I think Posy made a great work at balance everything in the right way, deciding to not tell us too much of a couple of things in Erik’s past, focusing instead in their relationship and their newborn feelings.
The only tiny little bad note I can make is about the ending. I was hoping to have another chapter to see how they settled into their new life together and I was so sure there were more pages that when I read The End I was really disappointed. It felt almost like it missed something. Still I really enjoyed Bent Arrow, it was a light read full of good feelings.

The 5th star is for the descriptions of North Dakota - especially driving across the prairie with nothing to see for miles and miles. Yep. That's exactly right. AND the mention of my hometown. Gotta love Fargo.
I enjoyed the story of Erik and Luther -- the awkward moments, the connection - the questions about a small town and being accepted. The courage to be who you are. It was just completely relatable to me - from the part where "I left right after high school" all the way to how it felt to actually feel like this could be your place.

Short sexy story : a quick satisfying read.
Luther and Erik both work for an oil company where working conditions are quite tough. They share companionship while Luther needs to figure out whether he’s ready to settle down now that he has inherited his Grandparents’ home.
Of course, too short for a good development, but still, entertaining : no drama and a nice HEA.

Set in the North Dakota oil fields, Luther and Erik meet over a plumbing crack ... and move from some very steamy hook-ups to a relationship that surprises both men. 3.5 stars.

Another good read from Posy Roberts. Low angst, feel good, falling in love, comfort read from her. You learn something new everyday. I’m not familiar with the oil field, or the work that goes into it. This part of the story, I can say bored me a little. I liked seeing Luther change and grow when dealing with his feelings for Erik. I feel like they switched personalities by the end of the story. It’s not necessarily bad, but it was nice to see them finally get what they deserved.
Luther has been traveling since the age of 18 just to hide from his demons and family. He’s now working somewhere close to where his family lives, and he’s finally in his own trailer. He meets this lovely plumber by the name of Erik. Erik was super shy in the beginning, and after hearing his story, I definitely understood why. I liked Erik a lot, he encouraged Luther to be himself, and was very patient with him. I think this is typical Posy Roberts with her realistic writing of two guys falling in love. They are never perfect but they make it work.

(Deep sigh)…(Glares at screen)…. I think I might need to give m/m reads a rest for a while. Cause this book…it was a bit like the summer I decided to watch all 86 episodes of Felicity. This sounds like a good idea and it started out well enough. But then there got to be a point where at the start of a new season depending on what Felicity had going on with her hair I just knew what she was going to do that year. By the end, though I did mourn the loss of my friends, I was glad to have graduated, because I had grown during those 86 episodes and it was time for me to move on.
That was this book for me. Yes if I had read it prior to the 485 m/m reads I’ve read this freaking year it may have been a three or four star read for me. The problem is when it’s your 486th….well you’re jaded. I could see what was going to happen with the inherited house & the plumber. I even knew when Erik would finally give up that ass….and I found myself mad that it turned out exactly how I predicted. I didn’t care, I was bored to tears, I even found myself unenthusiastic about the thrusting hard fucks….the bisexually bended arrow tattoo…..don’t care, don’t care, don’t care. Cause seriously from page 1 we knew it would be ok in the end.

3.75 - What happens when you are a scared of commitment but you fall in love? This is what Luther finds out in Bent Arrow. He runs from commitment of any kind; from where he lives, to his job, to his relationships. Being still, making a commitment is scary, it is easy to keep things light. A hard worker, Luther only stops when he has to. At more or less the same time, two things happen. His mom gets on at him to do up the lake house his grandfather had left him, and Erik walks into his life. (Or rather, Erik comes round to repair his plumbing, showing off a sexy arse and an intriguing tattoo). These two things shake up Luther's predictable life and make him start facing some truths.
For a short story (65 pages) this was an enjoyable read. It left me smiling as I followed Luther and Erik's journey towards each other, towards commitment. There was enough of a back story for this to be more than just fluff, more than just smut - yet it was still an easy, fun read. Again, it's another story for those times when you just want to sit and fall into a story without thinking too much. Really enjoyable, thank you.

Reviewing novellas is not my favorite thing to do but it was worth it in this case.
Bent Arrow is the story of two men who find each other at a point in their lives when they think they might never find that special one.
Luther is a little bit of a player. He doesn't have time for relationships nor is he looking to settle down soon.
He's not ready to go back home.
Erik is reserved and not as comfortable showing he is gay as Luther is. He has very good reasons but, sometimes, it's worth breaking the rules.
Them meeting totally changes their perspective on life and, together, they'll find a way to overcome every prejudice and fear.
Posy Roberts is still somewhat a new author to me but I love the way she writes. Her stories are always "real",perfectly balanced with just enough drama, angst, humor and passion to keep you glued to your chair until the end, while characters are a little bit flawed, sometimes hurt and disappointed by life but, in the end, they always find a way to reach out and grab hold of their dream.
I highly recommend each and every one of her books. I promise, you won't regret it.

That was surprisingly good! I needed a book set in ND and while I wasn't overly enthused about the blurb I decided to go with this one anyway. So very glad I did.

I so enjoyed this story. I felt so bad for both of these guys. Their pasts have left them wary and hesitant to do more than screw, but a little time and a lot of texts showed them both it was time to move on. To hopefully, finally be free, happy and where they want to be.
Luther always felt so smothered my his family. Especially living in a small town, where everybody knew everything about you. And with small towns you normally get small-mindedness. He was terrified to come out, so he ran. I don't blame him. I live on the Bible belt in fairly small towns, so I totally get it. He didn't feel like he could be himself and ran far. He'd had guys when and where he could, but until Erik, he never had one that really mattered. And for the first time, he wanted everything.
Erik was a little different. His family knew and were all ok with it. But it was people he worked with that turned on him. Assaulting him and marking him. When I read that, it broke my heart. It's horrible the way people are. So I don't blame him for being wary. At all. But he felt the way Luther did. He was just tired of hiding and wanted to be with someone who was ready for him in every way. He deserved it.
Not everyone is ready at the drop of a hat to make changes. Major changes. But if fear is holding you back, it's not worth it. Especially if you could lose the one thing that means more to you than anything. These guys had things to overcome. Who doesn't? But the good outweighed the bad and it was time to be free.

This was a quick, okay read.
I thought the set-up was okay, and I liked the characters and their chemistry well enough, but the writing just didn't pull me in. It moved too quickly and skipped over too much for me to really buy the depth of Luther & Erik's relationship. And then the climatic moment, where Erik accuses Luther of 'hiding' was such bullshit I rolled my eyes so hard I was worried they'd be stuck that way. Erik hadn't exactly been forthcoming about his feelings either, and it was so random and hypocritical. There was potential here, but it wasn't realized.

This was a nice little short read. It was a little rushed but I liked both of these guys and their journey from strangers, to hookup, to lovers & friends, to boyfriends.

This was a short quick read that I wanted more of. Luther Almond inherits a lake house he likes his life. Luther likes working in the oil field's he gets temporary housing a quick hook ups. Erik Heat is the plumber that arrives to fix the pipes in Luther’s temporary home, but when Luther spots Erik’s tattoo, he finds himself talking to the guy, thinking maybe he has a potential new hookup. However, the more time they spend together and actually talk (or text), Luther surprises himself by wanting more, even asking Erik to help him with some repairs at the lake house. This story read like it was missing something. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling I just wished it was longer.

Erik and Luther meet when Erik comes to fix the bad water pressure at Luther's trailer in the oil fields of North Dakota. When Luther notices Erik's tattoo, he thinks maybe there might be some extracurricular activity that could be a great respite from the work and the boredom. Erik seems nervous but maybe interested.
When they get together, Luther is impressed with the really good sex. The more they get together, the more they talk and the more Luther looks forward to his time with Erik. They begin to help each other out with other things - fixing up the house Luther has inherited, taking Erik to his tattoo removal appointments - that friends do. And the sex is spectacular as well.
Luther has been running from his hometown, his family and his life forever. Erik is tired of running. They aren't too great at reading each other's language though. But Luther finally gets tired of running and hiding. He makes an effort and things go better than he expected.
This was a good short story that could be a really good novel I think. In the short page count we get a pretty good understanding of Luther and Erik, but I would love to have a more in depth story of their lives. I'm really looking forward to reading more from this author. She has a really nice writing style and I've got some longer works that I will tackle next.
