Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age

Rate this book
A mass-battle fantasy game in which players can field combined armies of humans, elves, goblins, dwarves, and more, and develop that army over the course of a campaign.

Empires have fallen, and the land is broken. The great oathmarks that once stood as testaments to the allegiances and might of nations have crumbled into ruin. In this lost age, fealty and loyalty are as valuable as gold and as deadly as cold iron, and war is ever-present.

Created by Joseph A. McCullough, designer of Frostgrave and Ghost Archipelago , Oathmark is a mass-battle fantasy wargame that puts you in command of the fantasy army you've always wanted, whether a company of stalwart dwarves or a mixed force with proud elves, noble men and wild goblins standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the battle-line. Fight through an integrated campaign system and develop your realms from battle to battle, adding new territories, recruiting new troop types and growing to eclipse your rivals… or lose what you fought so hard to gain and fall as so many would-be emperors before you.

Oathmark is a mass-battle fantasy wargame from the author of Frostgrave. Sadly Oathmark made its debut right in the midst of a global pandemic, so that has slowed its acceptance with gamers-- I think its only catching on now that people are starting to game together again. There is little about Oathmark that seems all that complicated. I think the endearing trait to Oathmark is that it is perfectly simple and without a lot of bells and whistles. I've been looking for a mass fantasy game exactly like this and Oathmark fills that need for a mass battle game that is truly miniature figure agnostic. I've played four battles now, only one of them non-solitaire, and I'm very satisifed with it. The only element of the rules that I found a bit squishy was the retreat and routing rules that cause a boomerang retreat dynamic to happen as units collide with each other. That leads to some very gamey troop deployments on the battlefield. Other than that I really enjoy Oathmark, it's exactly what I'm looking for.

A very easy to read set of rules for fantasy figure games, well illustrated throughout, it covers the main things you will need. The main fantasy races of Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Orcs and Goblins are covered, including magic, so no need to buy extra books for your army lists like some systems!
The fun part comes from the kingdom building campaign system that will give you lots of reasons to fight your games and the ability to mix units from various races in your army!
I would thoroughly recommend these rules to anyone wanting to play fantasy based war games, and with a little conversion they could be used for historical too!
