Frostgrave

Frostgrave: Perilous Dark

Rate this book
A supplement devoted to playing solo and co-operative games of Frostgrave .

There are many tales of the Frozen City, and not all of them tell of battles between rival wizards. Often, the greatest adventures are those that pit a wizard and his trusty warband against the myriad perils found amidst the ruins of Felstad.

This new supplement for Frostgrave presents full rules for playing solo and co-operative games in which the feuds and skirmishes of wizards take a back seat to the exploration and unlocking of the mysteries of the city. These include guidelines for both dungeon crawls and adventuring in the ruins, new traps, unique random encounters, and four multi-scenario mini-campaigns to get players started.

Why should wizards fight amongst themselves? There is plenty of treasure for all and the Frozen City is enemy enough!

Another great addition to the Frostgrave gaming series. While this book is presented as a solo or cooperative (which the author states the material was written with two players in mind, each controlling a spellcaster and warband members, but advises players to experiment with rules to create play for more than two players) campaign, it’s main focus is to provide guidelines and examples for players to come up with their own scenarios. Many RPG and board game players will recognize a lot of these techniques (random dungeon generators, creating progressive objectives, etc.). The basic Frostgrave rules are tweaked to provide a more challenging experience for a cooperative or solo campaign and the author stresses the importance of focusing on the narrative aspect of the campaign. Additionally, there are new magic items and monsters.

This expansion for Frostgrave not only provides a 10 scenario solo/coop adventure, it also explains the design process behind each of the solo play concepts, and how solo play design is different from competitive play. As usual, Joseph McCullough has added new creatures that aren't part of a typical miniature collection and will require some hunting, modding, or 3D printing and a fair amount of painting. For instance, I don't have eight werewolves or any "hellcrows" in my collection. But that's a big part of what Frostgrave is about.

I have not played this supplement. Raring is based on enjoymemt of reading. I really enjoyed reading this book.

It is a master stroke for a supplement to an open and narrative game like Frostgrave to be written in a way that gives the tools for creating solo scenarios. It is all done using an easy to read and enjoyable voice.

A Solo/Co-op alternate rules set, plus notes on crafting your own solo/co-op campaigns, as well as some scenarios. All written in a clean, easy to understand manner with astounding art.
