What a cool way to play with Hot Wheels again! This gaming system is really fun, highly adaptable to a lot of different scenarios, and comparatively simple compared to other tabletop games (like, significantly so). As expected (but not always delivered) from a rulebook, it’s meticulously clear and consistent. There aren’t a ton of story campaign scenarios, but there are a bunch of fun skirmish scenarios that could easily be used to form a narrative campaign. And the book itself is gorgeous—well laid out, and the high quality photos showcase some seriously rad modded vehicles.

The only reason for the -1 ⭐️ is due to the typos—there are a LOT! Still perfectly understandable, just annoying to my English teacher eyes.

An amazingly, written instruction book. Began playing as soon as it is indicated in the book. It's actually engaging and funny, for not really being a story.

Vrooooom! Pew pew! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhk! Boom!

Relatively simple rules for ... well, the subtitle of the book, "Post-Apocalyptic Vehicular Mayhem". It's easy to read through, but unfortunately relatively hard to reference while playing. The basic rules are really simple, but the book packs quite a punch of extra content, including new vehicles, weapons, scenarios, war rigs, perk & sponsor system, campaign system.

There is plenty to explore, and as wargaming systems go, this one is really cheap to get into. All you need is a couple of toy cars, some paper templates you can print, and random objects to help create tracks.

Ton of fun so far :)

Revised version of favourite post-apocalyptic skirmish game Gaslands. Huge fun modding Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars then racing or battling them on the tabletop. This version has nicer production values, some rules revisions and improvements, and expanded content from later online releases, all following extensive playtesting from the Gaslands community. That community also contributed to the book's artwork, with pictures of players' beautifully made and painted vehicles throughout.
Rules are gently improved, and extra material adds to the game. The new "sponsors" actually open the game up for more scenarios than the races and arena events - you could have players hunting Beverley the Devil Car in a horror game, or pit the Highway Patrol against Rusty's Bootleggers in Smokey and the Bandit style. Especially with the option for cars jumping over ramps now...
The only slight disappointment was that there is still not a useful index in the book. I shall be resorting to post-it index tabs.
I have already run a game using some of the new rules - oh, the looks on the other team's faces when I deployed remote-control car bombs - and I'm looking forward to modding some more vehicles now.

We found Gaslands through the Kid's Mode (which is free!) while looking for a car themed tabletop game to use in our Fun Dungeon Fridays for homeschooling. Kid's Mode strips out all the weapons and instead just focuses on crashing vehicles into each other and objects while trying to reach the finish line, and it's a ton of fun. After trying that out we picked up the rulebook to try out the full version.

The ruleset here is more complex than Burrows & Badgers (another Osprey tabletop skirmish game we love) but less complex than Warhammer. The big draw, of course, is getting to use the matchbox cars you probably already have in a tub somewhere. Scratching, scuffing, mudding, and blooding the vehicles is actually one of our favorite aspects of Gaslands. We've put together a fantasy team with Games Workshop goblin drivers, a horror team with hacked apart Horror Clix models, and a steel plate-clad Warden crew. The printable movement templates and car-themed dice are top-notch, and we've found use for them even outside of Gaslands.

The basic gameplay is like any given skirmish game - pick one of several different high octane Twisted Metal style combat scenarios and hope to come out with more loot than the other team. There's also room for story-driven campaign play if you want to take a team and move them up through the rankings. There are some other "modes" included for more ways to play, and there's no question that Zombie Bash is where the Gaslands driving templates really shine. We already had 100+ perfectly sized zombie models from games like Zombie Town, so that's become our favorite mode.

If you do pick this up, be sure to join the Gaslands online communities for tips on vehicle and terrain projects. There's some really passionate players out there who have put together absolutely stunning Mario Kart games, hilarious ice cream truck builds, and so much more.

"Gaslands" is a tabletop game with a setting that resembles Death Race, it's vehicular mayhem at its finest.
The book is broken up into several chapters with the basic rules running over 24 pages. After reading them you can get started, everything else is additional but also more exciting.
The additional rules introduce extra variables into the game: simple hazards, collisions and attacks that will definitely spruce up the race.
Following the additional rules come the Advanced Rules, adding weapons, vehicle types, terrain and an audience. Considering the simplicity of the game, it is rich in detail. If you with to get even more personal with your cars you can add perks, sponsors and throw them into a campaign.
This game was written with 1:64 scale in mind which means Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars are perfect. Coming from an army based tabletop that is severely overpriced and calls plastic a luxury this is one hell of bargain.
With an abundance of sponsors in the tail end of the book, Gaslands encourages you get get creative with the models. Even though it is not mandatory, customizing little death machines is plenty of fun.
At the end of day, the reason why Gaslands is so effective is that it gives grown men an excuse to play with toy cars once again...and I'm okay with that.

This Refueled edition, in my mind is a great improvement over the initial release. The layout and order of presentation of material is easier to grasp and follow; the addition of the light blue paragraphs as explanation and/or commentary really aid the future and past player.

This edition does have what is becoming, to me, a glowing sore thumb in Osprey war game books of late: horrendous grammar and spelling errors. As the sections progress, formatting and font consistency also drop. If I thought the idea would hold water, I would volunteer as proofreading and layout for Osprey: just pay me in finished, correct books.

With regard to the game: BUY IT!! PLAY IT!!

I'm excited to play after reading the rules. The rules scream Mad Max and seem easy to use. There's a ton of optional content that just furthers that, letting you play with ice cream trucks, walls of amplifiers (like that awesome fire guitar dude in Fury Road), zombie mow down scenarios, and so on. A star taken off for how sloppily this is presented - it's a second edition with extra content yet has probably the largest amount of tense issues and other grammar mistakes I've ever seen in a commercial publication. There's also a sorely missing reference/index section.

I prefer the first edition. Cleaner, and more streamlined - the original ruleset did not overstay it's welcome. "Refuelled" captures all of the expansion material, offering an "omnibus"-like volume. Encyclopedic rulebooks are good references, but not the easiest to use during a game. I own and have read both copies, and expect to keep both.

This is a very ingenious war game system that you can play with very limited resources. The systems involved specialty dice and templates, but you can get by with plain D6 and cutout templates. The book I have is hardcover and very reasonably priced. I doubt I play much, but it is without a doubt a unique gaming experience.

It's not really a book, rather game rules. But... It's book-shaped, so probably counts like book. The game itself is quite simple, follows interesting story and looks interesting to play.
