Unexpectedly reincarnated into the setting of her favorite video game, Katarina swiftly realized that she was the villain of the story–doomed to death or exile, no matter what future came to pass! Armed with that knowledge, she’s done everything she can (with maybe a few blunders along the way) to try and change her fate. Now the stakes are higher than ever, because it’s time for her to begin studying at the country’s magic Academy. What’s waiting there is the greatest threat of all…the true heroine of her new world’s story!
10/7/22: Reading this and volume 1 in quick succession, the art shortcuts show up on every page but the frontispieces and are now impossible to ignore, so I'm downgrading the manga version of this story by a star. Maybe the anime is the only version that's above average, though I won't test that out for a while, since I have my doubts that going through the first major arc yet again with no rest in between is going to do it any favors.

The story had a time jump toward the end of the first volume, showing Katarina's social debut. Here, she's started attending the magic school, and meets Maria, the character who was Katarina's rival in the video game. As often happens, there's very little magic and practically no actual schooling going on. :D It's all about the characters being cute and having fun interactions.
The throwaway short story in this volume is an AU fanfiction featuring this set of characters, by the author herself. Going hard on the meta! There's a slapdash charm to the writing. Katarina's being an oblivious, unreliable narrator isn't reflected as well in the manga as in Yamaguchi's own writing. It almost makes me want to turn back to the novels and their iffy-at-best translations.
Oh my goodness, I am in LOVE with this series! Katarina is an absolute DELIGHT and I love she constantly bounces between wanting to change her fate and instinctively doing what she wants. It's also amusing watching her worry about changing the romantic routes for the capture targets because she STILL thinks she could end up doomed, even though she effectively accomplished her goal. Going off of that, it's hilarious that she's effectively BECOMING the capture target by inadvertently stealing their moments and now all the girls adore her. This is such a clever way to handle this scenario, especially since Katarina schemes to change the routes, then ends up changing them by accident by virtue of being herself. Also, LOVED seeing her put her villainess persona to good use in this volume!
This volume also eased up on the info dumps (thank GOODNESS) and introduced the heroine, who Katarina immediately becomes friendly with. It's weird that I have to keep reminding myself that this is supposed to be a video game she's in when it doesn't necessarily feel like it, but I'm not complaining. I think it would feel weird if they tried to make it feel more like a game because, at least to me, it would ruin the characters by making them more one-dimensional (as a LOT of dating sims tend to do). On the subject of characters, can I just say that I fucking ADORE Keith so much and how protective he is of Katarina? Also, his design is my favorite out of the boys, just sayin'.
That's about all I have to say, fangirl squeeing aside. I am so thankful I gave this series a shot, I am enjoying it so much more than I thought. I highly recommend other pick this up, it's such a fun series with a unique twist on the isekai formula.
I love this series so much! After the ending of volume 1, I've been really intrigued to know what was going to happen in this manga and it did not disappoint! I liked seeing how the characters have started to mature and it feels like the real story has begun with Katarina trying to ensure her survival now that she has started school. I really liked the introduction to the protagonist of the game and I'm interested to what will happen next!
W tej części oprócz wkroczenia Marii ogólnie jest trochę więcej dziewczyn and I really love it.
Parallel reading on manga and light novel -- which means light novel #2 and manga #2,3, and 4. Spoilers ahead for the earlier volume -- and each one may spoil the manga before.
The light novel, and the first manga, open with the arrival at school that was the beginning of the dating sim game (with the novel having more backstory about her preparations for this day). And at once, Katarina shows the same failure to notice things as in the first volume: when Jeord, her fiance, meet the game's heroine, Maria, climbing a tree, she remembers only that was the start of their romance in the game, and caught up in that, does not hear how he and Keith, her adoptive brother, jest about how much forthrightly she acts when she's caught climbing a tree.
Katarina, over the classes and the summer break, does miss other obvious stuff -- poor Keith comes across as censorious for trying to urge some manners as their mother would approve of (plus, of course, jealous) -- though she does have the sense to befriend Maria to try to ward off her Catastrophic Bad Endings. (Never realizing, for instance, that the endings were caused by her reaction to Maria's romances, not them in themselves -- again, sometimes it's comic, but not often enough to my taste.)
Still surprised at how into this I am! Also it’s absolutely hilarious that everyone is seemingly falling for Katarina - boys and girls alike - and she has no clue. Love it.
This volume continues the story of Katrina, who in a former life was a fanatic player of the otomi (dating sim for young girls, sweet rather than steamy like adult ones) game that is now her world and her life. Because she remembers the game, she knows that she is now the villainess who either dies or is exiled with little more than the clothes on her back -- and she wants to avoid that.
She spent the first volume trying to make friends of the people who'd be her rivals in the game, and they've all come out better people for it. But now they're all fifteen, old enough to go to magic school -- where the otomi game begins in earnest. Now she meets the heroine of the game, and she has to find some way to avoid all the various traps that doom the character from the game.
Even as she makes friends with the heroine, she inadvertently takes several of the other characters' big lines. But as she's feeling terrible about that, they assure her that they are by no means offended
Overall, it's the same light fun as the first volume, complete with "Katarina TV" showing us her internal debates in a humorous way. And there's even a flashback to her previous life, talking with a friend about the various capture targets and a fifth, hidden capture target.
In addition to the manga, there's also a prose short story at the end, based upon the inside cover illo of book one, which shows Katarina as a modern girl in a private school, and how the various characters ring changes on their roles in the magical world of the otomi game. In it, she still remembers living in the magical world, and is happy to discover that in this world her doom is only a restraining order, rather than death or exile into penury. And then she wakes up to discover that it was only a dream, that the magical world is still her reality and not the other way around.
It's interesting to read, because it feels like it could be a hidden level or cut-scene of the otomi game the protagonist once played. And given the way a lot of games work, it's completely believable that there could've been such an Easter Egg hidden in the software, to be enjoyed by those who find it.
As before, it ends with a note from the mangaka. There is also a brief teaser for the third volume, which I really hope the library acquires. This manga may be aimed at tweens and young teens, but middle-aged me is enjoying the heck out of it, and I know I would've loved it when I was in the target audience.
Catarina Claes is the spoiled daughter of a duke and the primary antagonist in a dating sim, Fortune Lover. Or rather, that's how the story is supposed to go. That was before a high school girl woke up in her body and made it her life goal to avoid all the horrible fates in store for this villainess.
She's been working diligently to avoid those fates, but the stakes keep rising as time goes on. Now that she's at her magic school, she's finally about to face the game's primary character. In other words, one mistake can easily lead to her doom.
My Review:
Ohhh boy, I forgot how much fun this series is! As the second installment in the series, My Next Life as a Villainess Vol. 2 is a blast to read. We've met most of the love interests at this point – with a few notable exceptions. Maybe I shouldn't be calling them love interests since Catarina is too oblivious.
Anyway, moving on. This volume introduces one of my favorite characters, Maria. She also happens to be the player character from the game, sooo....you can see how that's just a touch worrying for Catarina.
Once again, I freaking love how goofy and oblivious Catarina is. More than that, I adore how everyone is aware of her obliviousness and even comments on it (not that Catarina is aware of this, naturally). It kills me.
My Next Life as a Villainess is perfect if you're looking for a light and funny read, especially if you like Isekai and reverse harems.
Highlights: Isekai Strong Humor Clueless Lead Dating Sim Game Reverse Harem
I've been waiting for this to come out, specifically the manga version because I like the cute art. This one focuses on Katarina meeting the heroine of the game's setting, Maria Campbell.
This volume has five chapters and four of them focus on the newest character, Maria Campbell. In "Fortune's Lover", Maria was the player's character and the one everyone fell in love with. Naturally, this is different due to Katarina's presence but Katarina herself doesn't realize this, and that is where this volume's humor comes from.
Our self-identified "villainess" has become wrong-genre-savvy, and the dissonance between what she thinks is going on and the reality that is apparent to others is as funny to the reader as it is baffling to her friends. One moment in particular has her thinking that Mary is tsundere to Alan when this could not be farther from the truth. It is a skillful use of Dramatic Irony. The running gag that is Katarina's farming hobby returns and is also good for laughs. However, not all is humor.
Just because the villainess of "Fortune's Lover" wants to be Maria's friend that doesn't mean Maria isn't subject to bullying. Also, her home-life is implied to be rocky. Being the most special girl in this country has its drawbacks. The student council president has a scene and a follow-up event which just screams "something wicked this way comes".
The other characters are a bit Out Of Focus due to Maria's introduction but I feel that is only for the introduction and things will even out later. The fifth chapter mitigates this by showing what Katarina does with each of them during summer break.
The art continues to be cute and funny.
Overall, it is a great follow-up to the first volume but it feels a little lesser in content. Everything basically boils down to "Katarina and Maria become friends" instead of the more expansive plot line of the previous.
Trickster Eric Novels gives "My Next Life as a Villainess, All Routes to Doom volume 2" a B+
Today's post is on My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom, volume 2 by Satoru Yamaguchi and Nami Hidaka. It is 166 pages long and is published by Seven Seas. It is the second volume in the series. The cover has Katarina and two of her friends on it. The intended reader is someone who has read the first volume and comedy stories. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from the third person close of the Katarina. There Be Spoilers Ahead.
From the back of the book- MAGIC SCHOOL’S IN SESSION Unexpectedly reincarnated into the setting of her favorite video game, Katarina swiftly realized that she was the villain of the story–doomed to death or exile, no matter what future came to pass! Review- We pick up right where the first volume with Katarina starting at the magic high school and she is working hard to not be killed by anyone! She does not realize that she has changed the story so much that none of her friends would turn on her. In this volume Katarina meets the heroine Maria Campbell. Maria is very sweet, a hard worker, and Katarina, being as open-hearted as she is, likes her too. She saves Maria from bullying and is making Maria love her too. Other than meeting Maria not much happens in this volume but it is still a good volume and I am curious about where the plot is going on that Maria is friends with Katarina and none of the capture targets are interested in Maria.
I give this manga a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought with this manga with my own money.
School has started, the heroine has arrived, and Katarina is trying not to die. Sadly, she's operating under the assumption that everything in the world is exactly like the game (which to an extent it is) but forgetting that she's permanently altered the story in her attempts to avoid the bad ending.
This is a continuation of Katarina accidentally stealing the spot of heroine. Because not only is Prince Jeord (her fiancé) in love with her, but so is her adopted brother Keith, Prince Alan, Prince Alan's fiancée Mary, Nicol, and Nicol's sister Sophia. And Katarina is totally oblivious because she's assuming the real heroine (Maria) will Mary Sue™ her way into their lives. Also, Katarina is an actual good person (not the evil in-game version of Katarina) so she is 100% down for rescuing Maria from bullies and becoming her friend... which messes up the narrative even more.
But then there's a hint sorta near the end that something is off. And while I usually hate when authors contrive reasons to alter the known narrative, because what we know of the game narrative is based on Katarina's original memory (and memories are glitchy to begin with) it makes total sense in universe. Good writing.
I am having too much fun. -I am not LMAO but i really fly through this manga and I don´t have to think about it too much after I put it down. Mangas with tougher stories stick with you a long time, but this is so light hearted, it´s pure enjoyment.
Catarina and her friends are as the university now. They even met the Protagonist of the Game, Mary. Mary is the generic cute and innocent girl (the type of characters i trust THE LEAST!!!). But Catarina befriends her as well and everybody is happy.
fun fact: in the game there are some scenes, where Mary is supposed to meet the boys. e.g. one of the princes saves her from bullies and thus they forge a connection. Catarina saves Mary by accident and only later realises she stole the princes chance to be knight in shining armor. I think the incident backfired and Mary has fallen in Love with Catarina, cause following the line of the game, she would fall for whoever saves her from this situation.
I like this story very much cause Catarina still is not the pure, pretty and innocent girl, but she has loyal friends and I think the boys didn´t fall for Mary but for Catarina instead.
'My Next Life as a Villainess, vol 2' is a delight, as we get to see Katarina at school and fully in the territory she knows from the game - but despite her constant anxieties over her doomed status, she's instead made friends everywhere! She also gets to meet the ostensible heroine for the first time, and immediately falls for her - I don't know what the Japanese is here, but in this English translation, Katarina is calling her 'sweet Maria' from the moment they meet, and it's adorable how head-over-heels she is without realizing it. Anyway, I'm loving this story, and the way she's bringing together everyone simply by being her charming and friendly self; if you're not following this series in one way or another, you really should.
In volume 2 our MC Catarina continues to grow her own dating game harem without realizing it. And now she also adds her most feared enemy to it - Maria - while subconsciously undermining her romantic relationships with the other cast, effectively wooing Maria herself. Catarina is again our unreliable narrator, but it's easy to see what really happens in the manga. I wonder if the light novel is less easy to interpret... Anyway. Why 4/5? Because there wasn't much tension in this volume. Everything is smooth sailing and mostly plain fun. I hope volume 3 and this secret route character is going to be more of a threat for Catarina to overcome.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
*Now I understand why this manga is nicknamed Bakarina. She's really dense and a bit of an airhead. I like her anyway. At least, Katarina has redeeming qualities.
*She makes life easier for others by being herself.
*This reminds me of A Fiancé's Observation Log of of the Self-Proclaimed Villainess.
*I love it that she unknowingly 'seduced' everyone mainly involved in the og game. I especially love it that the fiancé genuinely cares for her.
Details are more prevalent in the light novels, but the manga is equally as enjoyable. I liked this bonus chapter about Katerina in a modern-day private school setting (related to the image from the manga Volume 1). Wholesome, fun series with interesting characters. Who do we ship? Who do we predict? The manga and light novels are still ongoing, anything can happen. But for now, I'm reading the manga until the paperback editions for the English translation of light novel 13 & 14 are released (approximately November 2025 & June 2026). I could very well read the ebooks too.
This was a good follow-up of the first book. We got more of "Bakarina"'s crazy strategies and cute friendship fluff, but I am concerned that this will become stale quickly. Don't get me wrong, it's fun to see a comedic take on this kind of "isekai to otome" stories, but there will come a time when plot will become predictable. That being said, I hope you can enjoy more of the manga, and that I may be wrong in the volumes to come.
This series continues to highly amuse me. Katarina is now in her magic school and comes across "the heroine" of the otome, Maria, and she is an absolute adorable bundle of sweets. Katarina is still trying to stop her doomed fate and in the process is pretty much befriending everyone and making even the girls trip over themselves to be close to her. So freakin cute. And her continued obsession with gardening as a fallback... XD Love this series.
The Series Continues Being Awesome! The Introduction Of Maria (The Heroine From The Otome Game) Was Well Placed & Seeing How Everything Is Unfolding Is Really Good. Katarina Is Such An Amazing Character, The Perfect Level Of Determined, Nice & Oblivious Which Makes Me Laugh As Well As Face Palm (In A Good Way!) I'm Wondering How It Will All Develop Further Between Her & The Rest Of The Group The Last Few Panels Were Quite Ominous & Im Looking Forward To Seeing What It Leads Too!
I’ve only read two volumes of this series but it is actually SO GOOD. It makes me laugh so hard and I love how it is not what I expected at all. I expected it to be funny, but in the same way that like Fruits Basket is funny. Like the comedy is there, but it’s actually has an extremely dark tone underneath the haha. NOPE I was wrong this whole thing is hilarious with not even a little dark undertone 😂
The first few pages of my copy has typos/duplicate pages. It was probably a bad print job unless other people also have the same issue. The actual story has the right pages, just not the right introduction info.
(I own the side stories, the first 3 volumes of the manga and volume 1 of the light novel. It’s a great series and I recommend the show if you haven’t watched it yet)
Short story is a high school AU. Geordo and Alan are the sons of the school director and the only ones who break the dress code. Katarina is so relieved that the bad endings here are so mild compared to the game that she happily tells Maria that her engagement with Geordo can be called off easily, much to his disapproval. Katarina wakes up before she can enjoy her school lunch.
