Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas

Rate this book
Billionaires, cowboys, and romance collide during the holidays in this next book in the River Ranch series!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year at the Ford family ranch. Will one cowboy’s homecoming be the greatest gift of all?

He left town and never looked back.
Cody Ford is a Wall Street honcho with humble Texas roots. This holiday season, he’d be content to just stay in New York and not face his family―and dodge their questions about when and with whom he plans to settle down. . .and if he will do so back at home. But his father isn’t getting any younger, and Cody doesn’t want to miss any last chances to see him and the rest of the folks back on the ranch. The last person Cody was expecting to see? His one-time girlfriend, Lexi Murphy, who’s been working as his dad’s new live-in nurse.

She never forgot him. Can she ever forgive him?
Lexi still holds a grudge against Cody. Back then, the college-bound heartthrob believed he was too good for a small-town girl like Lexi. But now Cody can’t help but see her in a whole new light. Could it be that this beautiful single mother with an unbeatable can-do spirit is the one he’s been waiting for all along? That depends on whether Cody can prove to Lexi that, this time, he means business―and if a sudden snowstorm can lend just the right amount of Christmas magic to help move things along. . .

Awwwe - sweet HEA.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Second chance romance stories are fun to read for the most part. Especially when so much is changed in the interim. It’s almost like they are strangers but better because they still had those warm feelings and love from when they were young.
The story was a little different because Cody admittedly had issues surrounding his family. That in turn shut Lexi out as well which led to heartbreak.
Written with deep feelings and emotional attachments to family and ill parents, it was a tough read in spots. Especially, if you have a parent who is aging or going through tough medical issues.
I could not hold Cody’s feelings against him. In fact, I think that endeared him to me even more. Eventually Lexi had to agree.
Learning to handle your emotions and dealing with the scary things we don’t want to have to deal with is what the story is about. Family is a huge connector here as well.
The author brings us a touching story that is emotional, so realistic, but yet very loving too. It’s a heartwarming Christmas story with a magical ending.
This is the first story by Lane I have read, but she captured my attention and I cannot wait for more from her!
Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas by Soraya Lane
A River Ranch series novel. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a standalone.
Cody and Lexi were high school sweethearts. When Cody’s mother was diagnosed terminally ill, Cody left River Ranch and everyone behind. Cody returns for Christmas more than a decade later and finds Lexi in his childhood home caring for his father. She’s beautiful and kind and stirs his interest.
He thinks: continue where we left off with no strings and return to New York. Business as usual.
She thinks: haven’t had sex in a long time, so why not?
Problem: multiple family issues intervene including a mother with Alzheimer’s getting kicked out of her home, an adorable 6 year old loving a pony, and an ailing father that needs nursing help.
I did not like Cody until the very end. Business as usual means he bought the nursing home and kicks everyone out. Sure, it was good for his bottom line. But it was just stupid not telling Lexi up front. It was all about him having a good evening. And he doesn’t even question the underlying complications until she makes a public protest. He doesn’t really care about fixing the problem, but rather his business and fixing his image.
Ok, sure it’s a romance and it’s not a spoiler to say he redeems himself in the end, but his attitude made it tough for me to care about this couple and then the novel as a part of the whole.
In the end, a romance with an HEA which is the most important part for me. I’m giving it a 3 and rounding up slightly because of the family that were more personable than Cody was, especially the young boy with the pony. And the attempt to have the women rally around Lexi although that felt flat to me too.
I won a copy of this book from Goodreads First Reads.
This book is part of a series. I was weary about reading it as a standalone but I did not get lost. This is a second chance love story. I actually liked it but at times I found myself skimming through some of the pages.
I couldn't stop myself from loving Lucas father Walter and Lexi son Harry.
Lexi is one strong woman, single mom and she has to take care of her mother.
I was able to retrieve this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Book 3 into the series River Ranch.. So far my favorite in the series.
Billionaire’s son, Tanner Ford, a rodeo cowboy is injured enough to have a long recovery. Right away the words, private plane and Fiji Islands come up and you know this is not your usual man about town. What we know about him from the first book is that he’s asked his father for money and he’s wealthy.
Lauren walked away the first time. Determined to work for her career she pursued a medical carrier. Not a bad move, every young lady needs to have independence affording them to make better decisions in life.
A second chance story, he needs her physical therapy skills to recover his physical abilities to return to the rodeo. They fly to Fiji. The whole time they are in Fiji, a little forced for the plot, ( why not just stay home where they would have access to equipment ) they work on mending their relationship and hashing through problems from the past along with the therapy.
I did like the conversational parts where misunderstandings get ironed out. The reason for their break up becomes clearer and more outlined. I do like that they work all this out without becoming annoying.
The book took a turn for the much better for the second half. Leaving Fiji and returning back to normal life, and having to deal with family, left you with a much better understanding on how these two ended up together.
If you’re a cowboy book fan this book is book is for you !
Enjoy ~
Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas is a great contemporary romance about second chances and spread some of that Christmas spirit.
Cody left his family’s ranch to make in big on Wall Street. He’s only coming home because his father is getting older and he wants to see him on Christmas, but he is not looking forward to his families expectations of him settling down with a family…he has his career, what else does he need. So, isn’t he surprised when his high school sweetheart is now his dad’s live-in nurse?
Lexi’s heart was broken by Cody, when he left their small-town with out a glance back. Will she give Cody a second chance when Cody quickly realizes he might have missed something huge when he walked away from Lexi. They just might need the magic of Christmas to lend a helping hand.
Soraya M. Lane delivers a heartfelt, emotionally charge story that rings in the holiday season with just the right touch of Christmas magic.
I loved the premise of this one and couldn’t resist an early Christmas story, sadly it was disappointing.
The main issue I had was that I didn’t care for either of the characters. Lexi was nice enough, but she was stuck in the past. Cody was super cocky and came across as self-centered. There’s a fairly large family, but it never felt confusing keeping everyone straight. The best part was Lexi’s son, Harry.
Plot wise, it was a bit all over the place and everything felt unfinished. The high school relationship was a focal point, the chemistry was non-existent, and the conversations between Lexi and Cody were superficial. Most of the story was telling instead of showing and several phrases and words were repeatedly used...like pleasure.
Overall, I kept reading because of the promise of a second chance romance. And while I did get that part of it, the rest of the story didn’t deliver for me.
**Huge thanks to St. Martin’s Press for providing the arc free of charge**
ARC kindly received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a sucker for a second chance romance, and for cowboys, so this one had it all in there for me, ready to catch my eye.
I liked both Lexi and Cody, even if I did get frustrated with Cody a lot of the time. His family and also Lexi's son Harry were fabulous secondary characters too.
There's a lot going on in this one, on both main characters sides, but the storyline only covers a few days. It feels like it goes for much longer than that.
I wouldn't say that there's no angst in this, but what is in there isn't drawn out which is really nice. I read this in one day so its a nice and easy read.
Can be read as a standalone, but I would like to read the others in the series that I have missed. Other than this one, I've only read one other.
Would recommend.
Once Upon A Cowboy Christmas
By: Soraya Lane
*Review* 🌟🌟🌟
Once Upon A Cowboy Christmas is a charming holiday read, and I enjoyed most of the story. Cody and Lexi were young sweethearts until he up and ran away. Now, he's back because his father has cancer. Ironically, Lexi is the father's nurse. There are so many questions and hurt from the past, and Lexi must decide if she can forgive Cody for his terrible behavior. I'm not sure he deserves forgiveness, not completely at least. The reasoning behind his actions and their consequences for everyone else are glossed over much too easily and kind of just dismissed. I don't agree with this part of the story. It's sweet and delightful, but it's also too unrealistic for me.
It's never too early to start reading Christmas Romances, especially when there are so many and the holiday season isn't long enough to read all the ones I want. When I read the synopsis for Once Upon A Cowboy, I was excited. Two of my favorites things are Christmas and cowboys. That said, this book had the potential to be a five star rating from me. But unfortunately, the hero was a bit too full of himself for me to love. By the end of the book I did like him, however I didn't love him and that was a bit disappointing.
Cody moved on from the family ranch right after high school and didn't look back unless you count the few and far between times he came to visit. He believed he had good reasons which I will not divulge to you because you should read that on your own. I will say that while I understood his reasons for staying away, I didn't feel they were the huge drama he made them out to be. But that is just my own opinion, and one of the reasons I couldn't fall in love with Cody. Also, I didn't feel the connection between him and Lexi. Lexi, I loved. And on her behalf, I was frustrated with Cody. Look, I don't want to downplay his way of thinking too much just because I couldn't connect with him. But I can say that his situation was one that I know personally; it never would have even occurred to me to leave the way he did or stay away so long.
The synopsis for this book gives you good insight into the premise of this story so I won't need to summarize it. You must be wondering why I gave this book four stars after reading how I didn't like Cody. Well the answer to that is easy. The secondary characters and Lexi are who brought me entertainment and kept me turning pages. I especially adored Cody's dad. He was such a wonderful addition to this story which takes place the week leading up to Christmas.
Cody and Lexi's story is the third book in the River Ranch series. I have not read the previous books yet. Because I truly liked Cody's younger brother and sister, I would like to read their books as well. In addition, there is the oldest sibling, Angelica, still to have her great love story told.
While this was my first book by this author, I would like to read more from her. Even though I wasn't a fan of Cody, I enjoyed the author's talent for storytelling; she kept me engaged in the story and that is all I need.
This is my honest and unbiased review. Thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
This a first time read by the author, I enjoyed Soraya Lane's Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas.
Lexi and Cody were high school sweethearts until Cody went off to college and never look back breaking her heart. He returns after 15 years to visit his family and hope that the painful memories that surround his home do not rear its ugly head and envelope him to return to his life in New York City. He stumbles into the beautiful nurse/caretaker to his father, later to find out that it is Lexi, his old sweetheart. He tries to rekindle what they had before but Lexi is bent on keeping her heart to herself and a cold wall of anger against him.
Although she can never forget him, she tries hard not to forgive him and comes off a bit cold in the beginning of the story. As Cody spends more time with Lexi, he begins to learn a bit more about her and sees her in a whole new light. She's a single mother that will not let anything and anyone break her spirit...not even Cody. Eventually, they both find themselves drawn to each other again. Can the many years that have passed between their last encounter bring them to love again?
This story was very heartwarming and a comfortable read. Each party had their demons to deal with...Cody has to rediscover his love for Lexi and overcoming the memories that drove him from his family and his home. Lexi has to learn how to not let her past relationships hinder her chance at love again with Cody. In the beginning, I was put off a little by Cody's arrogance and Lexi's cold austere but as I continue to read the story, these faults start to melt away from the main characters. Lovely well-written story that I would love to visit in audible form.
I would like to thank the author, St. Martin’s Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cody Ford left home years ago because his mother was sick and dying from cancer. He did not want to continue to watch her suffer, is what he has told himself all of these years. Now coming home with the father being ill is bringing back those same feelings. The problem with being home is his younger brother and sister who stayed are looking at him expecting him to leave once again. The person taking care of their father Lexi Murphy has been not only taking care of the father but is also living on the property with her young son. Everything changes for her when she sees Cody, but he does not remember his former girlfriend from high school. The same girlfriend that he said nothing to before he left and she has always wondered what she did.
After he figures out who she is and they begin to heal she comes to find out that he is now the person responsible for her mother and all of the other elderly persons having to move in just four weeks’ time with Christmas being right in the middle. When he begins to understand what he has done. It is what happened right before she found out that he is the one that owns the company that destroys her. His brother does not have to tell him I told you so because it is written all over his face. I liked this story and for much of it, it felt like a regular story with a little Christmas. The characters were all still very good and if you read the other books you won’t be disappointed. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
He’d be content to stay in New York and dodge his family’s questions about when and with whom he plans to settle down and if he will do so back at home. But Cody Ford’s father is getting any younger and Cody doesn’t’ want to miss any last chances to see him and the folks back on the ranch. Lexi Murphy is working as Cody’s dad’s new live-in nurse and she holds a grudge against Cody since he believed he was too good for a small-town girl but she ever forgot him.
This second chance holiday romance is an angst ridden, emotionally gripping read that puts readers through an emotional wringer as Cody and Lexi tries to overcome the past and some emotional issues. Readers can’t help but experience all the emotions of the strong, compelling characters as they draw readers into their story which means they shed some tears but also hope and forgiveness as Cody works to prove that this time, he means business.
The plots is steady paced and captivates readers right from the start while keeping the readers glued to the pages with suspense as the HEA remains in question until the very end. Lots of family and secondary characters add that something extra to the story that makes it enjoyable and while Cody may be a bit of over dramatic, the magic of the holiday season and spirit of togetherness during the holidays makes this a gratifying and entertaining read.
Cody comes back for Christmas and see the woman he left 15 years ago. And does not recognize her, ok so that I could not believe. They had been a couple and he does not recognize her.
Back to the story. She is his dad's nurse. She needs this job. He is in love with his job, and he obviously never processed the death of his mum.
They meet again, they fall in lust. Then there is some drama that I can not mention, but let's just say he sees dollar signs and not humans. I did want to kick him there. What an asshat.
But they will work it out and live happily ever after
It was a good story. And what they had to overcome was themselves
I like the narration. She did well with different voices and, and emotions.
ONCE UPON A COWBOY CHRISTMAS is the third story in the River Ranch series. While there were many parts of Cody and Lexi’s story that I enjoyed (thanks to secondary characters) this is a story that I was rather torn on – not feeling connected to the main characters at times, or simply wishing they’d get over themselves and live in this moment, not in the past. Actions often have far-reaching consequences, this is something that Cody is about to learn firsthand.
Secondary characters can make or break a story for me, and that was very much what happened in ONCE UPON A COWBOY CHRISTMAS. In the end, I finished this one not for Cody and Lexi but because of Cody’s family, and Lexi’s fight for her mother’s health and safety, and her devotion to her son, Harry. Sometimes a story simply doesn’t work for me yet there are portions of the story that keep me reading and liking parts of the overall story – and that is exactly what happened here. I could load this review with spoilers to justify my feelings but that’s not fair to readers who haven’t experienced this book for themselves yet.
So I’m going to leave saying that I liked this one, but didn’t love it while still looking forward to the next story in the River Ranch series. It’s a good book, it simply didn’t connect for me and that’s life, not every book is for every reader. Give this one a try and make up your own mind, this couple’s families make it worth reading and that’s what got the 4 stars.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I was looking for a guilty pleasure Christmas romance story. I know it’s not Christmas but Christmas stories are usually romances. Now I also love a good cowboy gets the girl romance so this book was perfect for me.
I did say guilty pleasure and I meant it. Stubborn good looking cowboys who are real men and the beautiful women who have either broken their hearts or had their hearts broken by the cowboy are just what a girl needs sometimes. This is about a girl that got left behind with a broken heart and the guy who comes back years later and has no idea why the girl is so angry with him. You got to love it!
Well written characters especially a little man named Harry who loves his Mom and tells the truth, maybe too much truth at times. Beautiful Mom Lexi who carries a grudge, stubborn patriarch Walter who is very ill, even more stubborn egotistical son, Cody who is also convinced he can’t settle down, and the rest of Walter’s kids who have gathered at the ranch for possibly one last Christmas together.
I enjoyed this cute Christmas story even thought it’s not Chrismas.
I won this book in a First Reads giveaway. Thank you to St. Martin’s Paperbacks and Soraya Lane.
Cody and Lexi have a second chance at love at Christmas. He's been avoiding home for years, and it's kind of weird how he didn't think anything about the girl he left behind. She's all kinds of awesome though. A good mom, great with Cody's family, sincere.
Cody's dad and Lexi's kid were honestly my fave characters, and I'm glad to see he could make a turn around on it all. Pretty good holiday romance. A couple little things made it less than 5 star for me but I enjoyed it.
Did not finish - at 30% the hero was so unforgivable I could not continue reading. First he totally forgot about someone he supposedly love because of the painfulneess of his mother's illness and death. Just runs off. Then he finally recognizes her and feels somewhat bad, but not really because he tries to go about seducing her with no intention of hanging around. She's a single mom with a mom in a nursing home going under. What dude do you think you are doing besides messing with her life. Then to find out he bought out the nursing home and is kicking the people out to make a investment. Yeah, I had enough. I don't really want to know how the author redeems him because he would have to change a lot for me to even look at him again.
This is my first book by this author; Soraya Lane. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and had I had more free time I most likely would have finished this in one sitting. I could identify with the main characters and the author created a very good story. It was just a little predictable; but, in a good way. Of course everyone that reads a romance novel wants a HEA ending. Cody and Lexi are two likable characters and their situation/families/story are realistic. This story also touches briefly on the real-world problem of finding decent/affordable/local care facilities for our aging parents; especially those with special needs like dementia/Alzheimer's. The characters are well developed and the story flowed well. I hope you have a chance to read it and enjoy it as much as I did. Happy reading!
Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas is the third book in Soraya M. Lane's River Ranch series, but it's the first book in the series I've read as well as the first book I've read by this author, and I was somewhat less than thrilled with the experience for a number of reasons, which I'll get to, but because of those issues, I cannot give this novel more than a 2-star rating.
First, although part of a series, this novel worked just fine as a standalone--I had no trouble figuring out the many characters in it, but this story is about Cody Ford and Lexi, in fact, Cody is the first character we meet. He's on his private company jet en route from his busy career in New York to his former home in Texas, and the large family ranch, a place he's been avoiding for more than a decade. It's nearly Christmas and his father is dying from cancer. Cody fled his home a decade earlier, when he was 18 years old, when his mother was dying of cancer, and he also fled from Lexi, his high school girlfriend whom he claimed to love. He's only been back to attend his mom's funeral, and a few short holiday visits in the interim--emotions just aren't his thing.
Once his younger brother, Tanner, picks him up at the airport, the first person he encounters at the ranch is someone who looks strangely familiar, but he can't quite place her. She tells him that she's his father's caregiver, since his father doesn't want to be either in a hospital or in hospice. Even when she tells him her name is Alexandra, he still doesn't recognize this woman as his high school love, Lexi, and to say she's less than thrilled to see him is putting it mildly. Adding insult to injury, not recognizing a woman you said you loved after only 10 years was quite telling. When he fled 10 years earlier, he never even said goodbye or told her he was leaving her, in such a hurry to get gone that he never even considered her or how hurt she'd be that the man she'd planned to marry deserted her without a word. When he finally realizes who she is, he's got more than a little explaining to do, and Lexi isn't going to be satisfied with just an off-hand, "I'm sorry," and all I can say about Cody is that he's a wuss and a gutless coward, although Lexi is still drawn to him physically, heaven knows why.
In the intervening decade, Lexi was married briefly, divorced the husband who bankrupted her, and had an adorable, now 6-year-old son, Harry, the light of her life. Lexi's ex is a deadbeat dad, and Lexi was thrilled to find a job that paid well at River Ranch, caring for Cody's dying father. She desperately needs the money because her mother has Alzheimer's and needs round the clock care at a nearby nursing home, which costs a whole lot of money that Lexi doesn't have--the job at River Ranch was a godsend, because she's now living there free of charge, but still trying to figure out what to do about her mother, since she's received notice that the land the nursing home sits on was just bought, the residents given just 4 weeks to vacate the premises so that the facility can be demolished to make room for developers to put up a pricey condo complex, and guess who that developer is? Yup, it's Cody, yet none of his cowardice, or his cold-hearted businessman brain stops her from having sex with the man.
I found Cody to be totally gutless, totally self-absorbed, totally closed-off emotionally, and what Lexi saw in him aside from his bedroom skills totally escaped me. But Lexi does have a backbone, and does organize and stage a protest, first posting it on Facebook, and then gathering outside the nursing home with like-minded people including the nursing home staff--even drawing TV coverage. Yet, Cody is still planning to go ahead with his plans, because for him it's all about the bottom line--profit over people. After one more night in bed with Lexi, he again sneaks out of the ranch in the wee hours of the morning, and flies back to New York and his business, but at least this time, Cody let Lexi know it would be their last night together. What a jerk!
Since this is a romance novel, I expected an HEA ending, but Cody's redemption and apologies were far too little, far too lame, and far too late to redeem him in this reader's mind, and his plans for the future, commuting to and from Texas and New York also made little sense, because it would leave Lexi and Harry alone a good part of the time. In this age of easy global communications, why couldn't Cody move his business and operate out of an office in Texas?
In short, this romance novel was way too short on romance, although there was plenty of sex, but I kept asking myself why Lexi couldn't resist Cody, who I found to be an absolutely thoughtless and unfeeling dolt. The only things that kept this from being a one-star review were precious little Harry, Cody's dad and his kind treatment of Lexi, as well as Cody's kindhearted siblings and their spouses and their treatment of Lexi and her son. I recommend taking a pass on this novel.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
Lexi still holds a grudge against Cody. Back then, the college-bound heartthrob believed he was too good for a small-town girl like Lexi. But now Cody can’t help but see her in a whole new light. Could it be that this beautiful single mother with an unbeatable can-do spirit is the one he’s been waiting for all along? That depends on whether Cody can prove to Lexi that, this time, he means business―and if a sudden snowstorm can lend just the right amount of Christmas magic to help move things along.
REVIEW: ONCE UPON A COWBOY CHRISTMAS is the third instalment in Soraya Lane’s contemporary, adult RIVER RANCH erotic, romance series focusing on the Ford siblings. This is thirty two-year old New York investor and businessman Cody Ford, and nurse / single mother Lexi Murphy’s story line. ONCE UPON A COWBOY CHRISTMAS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Cody and Lexi) ONCE UPON A COWBOY CHRISTMAS follows the rekindling relationship between investor and businessman Cody Ford, and nurse Lexi Murphy. Fifteen years earlier Lexi Murphy’s heart was destroyed when her high school sweetheart left town without so much as a good-bye. Fast forward to present day wherein Lexi is now the in-house nurse for the ailing Walter Ford, where she will come face to face with the man that walked away without looking back. Enter billionaire investor Cody Ford. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship and romance between Cody and Lexi, and the potential fall-out when their time together comes to an end.
Cody Ford rarely comes home but the Christmas holidays meant quite possibly visiting his father for the very last time. What Cody never expected was to find the woman he once loved, a woman whose heart he destroyed when he walked out of her life. Lexi Murphy is a single parent whose heart belongs to her seven year old son but seeing Cody Ford brings with it too many memories from the past, memories that continue to push Cody out of her life.
The relationship between Cody and Lexi is one of second chances. Cody Ford didn’t recognize our heroine further adding insult to Lexi’s already broken heart. Offering only a few night together, with no promise for the future, Cody finds himself spiralling out of control, struggling between going back to New York or staying home. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are reintroduced to Cody’s siblings: Mia Ford (Cowboy Stole My Heart #1), Tanner and Lauren (All Night with a Cowboy #2), sister Angelina Ford, and their father Walter; as well as Lexi’s seven year old son Harrison.
ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS COWBOY is a story of family, loss, grief and second chances. The premise is heart breaking but encouraging ; the characters are sassy and broken; the romance is spicy and captivating.
And here we go to the story of another Ford sibling, Cody.
Cody was a financier in New York. Even loving the country life and the family ranch, Cody desperately had to flee there due to his mother's terminal illness.
He couldn't see her dying day by day. So as soon as he finished high school, he went to Harvard and didn't come back.
His mother has passed away, and now, years later, his father has the same disease.
Cody came on the family private jet to celebrate what could be Walter Ford's last Christmas.
Arriving at the ranch, he is surprised to find out that his father's therapist/nurse was his sweetheart from the high school, Alexandra (Lexi).
Lexi was a divorced woman with a young son and a mother suffering from Alzheimer's that was in a facility that had its days numbered close, since a businessman had bought the land and was expelling patients and causing health professionals lose their jobs.
With so many worries in mind, Lexi didn't have time for romance, right?
Wrong.
Cody was the great love of her life, and had broken her heart by leaving for college without saying goodbye.
Now they would have to live peacefully during those Christmas days.
While away, Cody did everything possible to forget everything that meant the sadness of losing his mother, including Lexi. However, being with her, it was impossible not to see
the wonderful woman she had become, and the good mother she was to Harrison (Harry).
However, old hurts are hard to heal, and can become even worse when revelations come to light.
4.5*s of moving and charming ranch romance
This is the third book in the series, and whilst I think you would benefit from some of the back story, you could read this as a stand alone and enjoy it. You may choose to then go back and enjoy the previous two as well! I don't think it would spoil anything too badly if you chose to do that.
Ford senior is very sick, and wants his whole family home for Christmas, as it is likely to be his last. Having been a larger than life, and very successful business man, he is now a shadow of his former self, but thanks to his live in nurse, he has retained his dignity and his style.
Cody left home at 18, when his mother was dying, and has rarely left NY since, but he knows that this is one time his presence is required. He plans to fly in and fly out again, just touching base for the festivities themselves. Little does he realise how his life will change forever when he gets home. Because, somehow the ranch does feel like home, and yet also a place he has hidden away in the deepest vault in his heart and brain. Watching him realise this, and realise what he avoided for so long, is moving without being sentimental.
Lexi, the live in nurse, and single Mum to Harry, was Cody's high school sweetheart, that he left behind without a thought. She has had a lot of time to try and understand why she was lacking, and never quite got an answer. Finally he is back, and yet he seems to place no blame on himself, or even really remember how close they were. As they both work through this gap in his memory, they get a second chance at being at least close, but the question of whether it can last is an entirely different one.
Be ready with tissues, because there are definitely points where tears are likely to spring, but it is beautifully written, and done for a purpose, rather than to play on your emotions. A very satisfying and engaging story, with plenty happening which adds to the narrative rather than distracting. Harry most certainly deserves high billing, as he is fabulous too.
Highly recommended especially if you are ready to get into the Christmas spirit with a lovely second chance romance and family reconciliation story.
ARC kindly received via Netgalley for an honest review
I love a second chance romance. One set around Christmas time? Well, I am just putty in the hands when it comes to reading them.
Cody and Lexi's story is full of emotion - it would switch me from loving to hating Cody in 2 paragraphs lol
I enjoyed the push/pull between our lovelies, never knowing where things would end up.
I was a big, big fan of Lexi's son and of Cody's father - they rounded out our MC's lives well.
Lexi is one strong woman - so much on her plate, but she never waivers in her love and care for those around her, when a lesser person would crumple under the pressure.
This is the 3rd book in a series, and I have not read the previous books, however this did not affect my reading or enjoyment at all.
I found “Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas”, by Soraya Lane (St. Martin's Paperbacks), an enjoyable read featuring a couple who were high school sweethearts and had a rough breakup.
I usually love this trope and this story was no exception, with a combination of bitter-sweet memories, regret, hurt, lost chances, misunderstandings and new beginnings. I really liked the way Soraya Lane wrote the familiarity, comfort and intimacy between Cody and Lexi, and how we, readers, realize that despite their 10-year separation, they’re still amazingly close.
I think Cody’s reasons to stay away were smartly, although a bit unexpectedly, handled. I liked the fact he’s a bit broken, yet very rational and practical.
The Texas setting, Cody’s family and Lexi’s son create the ideal environment, sometimes a little cookie-cutter, for the romance to flourish.
Lane’s outlook on caring for ageing parents gave a realist tone to the story.
Cody Ford is a Wall Street honcho with humble Texas roots. This holiday season, he’d be content to just stay in New York and not face his family—and dodge their questions about when and with whom he plans to settle down. But his father isn’t getting any younger, and Cody doesn’t want to miss any last chances to see him and the rest of the folks back on the ranch. The last person Cody was expecting to see was his one-time girlfriend, Lexi Murphy, who’s been working as his dad’s new live-in nurse. Single mum Lexi still holds a grudge against Cody
This is the third book in the series & I think it could be read on its own. A touching second chance love story. I loved Lexi a strong independent woman, I liked Cody but didn’t love him as I found him a little too arrogant, however I did love Walter & especially Harry who was the star of the book for me.. A heart warming story that held my interest all the way through & a welcome addition to the series
'It’s the most wonderful time of the year at the Ford family ranch. Will one cowboy’s homecoming be the greatest gift of all?'
It;s not often that i read a cowboy romance, but so pleased to have read this wonderful story by Soraya Lane. I've read a few of her books and have really enjoyed them. Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas was a book that was an easy read and one that i enjoyed curled up whilst all was quiet around the house. Loved the characters, but there were times when i felt like the two main character's needed their heads banging together to bring them to their senses. Each character had a part to play and little Harry i thought was so adorable. The book at times did pull at my heartstrings.
I am not going to write what the story is about, as i prefer one to read the book for themselves, but i do highly recommend. I would like to thank Netgalley and St Martin's Press who invited me to read this ARC, and this is my honest review which i have freely given.
When tragedy struck his family, Cody was unable to handle the emotional trauma so instead he left his family, his girlfriend and his hometown and only returns home for infrequent visits. He has forged a successful career in business but now that his father is ill, he has agreed to spend the holiday season with his family never expecting that would mean spending the season with the girl whose heart he broke as well.
Lexi has her hands full between caring for her mother, being a caregiver for Cody’s father and a single mother to her son. She hasn’t forgotten the devastation she felt when Cody left her behind and isn’t about to just forgive and forget. As they spend time together, they become close once again but there is one thing he hasn’t told her that could ruin the fragile relationship they have been building.
This is a heartwarming story about love, family and forgiveness with all the feels.
Four Second Chance Stars.
I enjoyed this read. This was my first book by this author.
Christmastime at the Fords Ranch is entertaining say the least.
Cody Ford would rather stay in New York than head to the family ranch but with his fathers health, he decides to go home for Christmas. What he wasn’t expecting was to run into his ex girlfriend, Lexi Murphy. She is his dads nurse. And he definitely wasn’t expecting to feel all the emotions of being home, feeling lonely, feeling guilty and feeling sad and scared. Cody tried to keep the walls up but this time around it’s not as easy to end.
We get a good wholesome story, with entertaining characters and a storyline that keeps your attention the entire time.
A feel good romance with deep emotions.
Do you like romance?
Do you like Christmas?
How about billionaires?
Or perhaps billionaire cowboys?
I do, and I loved Once Upon a Cowboy Christmas by Soraya Lane!!!
Cody Ford fled Texas when his mother became ill, and he has been living in NYC ever since. He returns home for Christmas to visit his father, as his health declines. Surprise of all surprises, his teenage sweetheart Lexi Murphy is his dad's live-in nurse! This was such a sweet second chance romance with a slow build and plenty of steam! And plenty of Christmas cheer and Christmas Cowboys! I love when a romance has a little bit of conflict and a good backstory.
Probably my favorite part of this book was the well rounded cast of characters. I fell in love with the Ford family. There was a warmth between them, while at the same time being so real. I am going to have to go back and read the first two books in the River Ranch Series. And I can't wait for book 4 coming out March of 2020.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
FTC DISCLAIMER: I RECEIVED AN E-ARC FROM THE PUBLISHER THROUGH ONE OF A VARIETY OF SOURCES. I VOLUNTARILY OFFER MY HONEST REVIEW OF THE BOOK, THOUGH IT IS NOT EXPECTED OF ME! RECEIPT OF THIS BOOK IN THIS MANNER DOES NOT AFFECT MY OPINION OF THE BOOK OR THE CONTENT OF MY REVIEW!
Once again, this book was a disappointment for me! I hated Cody's motivations, felt like he was cocky, selfish, and manipulative, and not at all honorable. Lexi was too focused on the past, to the point where I had to wonder if she believed that she could be happy in a relationship at all! The plot was a bit unfocused and felt like the author left some plot threads hanging unfinished. I really had to struggle to read this one! Suffice it to say, this is one author I will avoid in the future!
