Technology can save us. It can also kill us all if we're not careful. How far will a parent go to save their child? If you're John Taylor, you'll go as far as it takes. The year is 2051. Due to a devastating natural disaster and a regime oppressive to any technological advances that are not military in nature, most progress has been slowed to a standstill. Scientists and inventors must hide their work to avoid having it usurped by the government for military use. Some people just have a knack for overcoming the odds, though; for example, there's Lucas Taylor... Stay tuned for the thrilling tale of a boy who is one of a kind. You might even say he's singular... Fans of Stephenie Meyer, Suzanne Collins, Rick Riordan, or JK Rowling will love Singular. Click now for your copy!
The powers of technology are stretched with science, inspiration and hope. This story is about a young man who is so loved by his father that he is on the receiving end of an unbelievable miracle. The time set is in the future, but gives us something think about. This is the beginning of an adventure that pits the government thinking against groups of scientists and others that are trying to save the world in their own way. Life has gotten so bad that most people are living on the streets homeless and fighting for survival. You discover many facts about Lucas as you continue reading. Who do you trust as you’re running from the government? A wonderful read with some interesting tidbits to learn.
engrossing. initially. set in a believable near future. grabbed my attention on page one. then it slowed down, but also expanded, keeping my attention in spite of the pacing. good enough core story to wade thru the extraneous. definitely recommend to anyone without pacing issues/patient readers will love it, i'm sure.
This book is completely different from anything I've read so far and I absolutely love it. Without giving out too many details so you guys will read it too, It went so unexpected in the beginning of the novel with Lucas and his mom, and then his time in the hospital when he woke up and then the whirlwind adventure they embarked on just to keep him safe from the government/keep his secret; it's quirky, Lukey has a really innocent personality (think Sheldon from the tv series "Young Sheldon") that easily lets him get confused by things his 9 year old brain doesn't understand, yet the astounding bravery he encompasses is amazing and not often seen. I wish I could give this book more than a 5 star rating !
So excited to have the beginning of a new series by Larry Buenafe. This sci-fi young adult novel is set in a future where climate change and government oppression are a reality. Lukey and his mother are in a devastating accident. Lukey's father, a brilliant scientist, spends several years developing a secret technology that will heal Lukey's horrendous injuries and make him a one of a kind being (singular). The government wants this technology and will do anything to obtain it. Much of the story takes place in Australia, blending reality with the author's imagination. Great action scenes that make this book a page turner. The book ends with a cliff hanger; I can't wait for the next book in the series.
I am 72 years old, and to this day I enjoy YA, young adult science fiction. At first I thought “oh hum” but the storyline quickly took off with a wild and frenetic galloping pace from one exciting scene after another. To my surprise and amazement, I am delighted to say this is the best young adult science-fiction story I have ever read. Where the author got the ideas for this story, I can’t fathom, for it is filled with interesting & different technological ideas, science to the nth degree, diverse and culturally rich people and characters you would never expect in a YA novel. It is a fast paced interesting read with a new surprise around every corner. Perfectly appropriate for middle school on up and no unnecessary hack & slash. Yes, there are a few exciting battles between the government and the indigenous people, with no inappropriate sexual innuendo nor filthy language.
To the author: The link to Amazon to leave a review at the end of your book was not working. I tried multiple times. So I had to leave my review on Goodreads.
I bought this book and only realized I had read it as I got further in the book. It didn't matter because it was fun to read it again. I am not sure why I hadn't left a review but I guess it's never too late to do so. Great imagination. Great pov of the kid. I am wondering a bit why he never mentioned his mom but then again, with all that happened to him, I can easily see how this could slip his mind. I read the author first series. I believe he has made great progress in his writings. A great read. Worth reading twice.
Anne Kinslow. I absolutely enjoyed reading and loved this first book in a new series called SINGULAR by Author Larry Buenafe. It is set in the Australian Outback near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. I don’t want to give too much away. I can’t wait to read the next part of this futuristic story in book two. If you have read any of this Author’s books, then you will enjoy this one. I would have given a higher score had it been possible. Do yourself a favour and check this book out.
The premise of this story is interesting. A child, severely injured in an automobile accident, is saved by having whats left of him fused with nanotechnology. I have to question why, not once in the entire book after the accident happens, is his mother mentioned. What 9 year old, who wakes up from a coma, doesn’t ask about his mother who was in the car with him? There is no mention of her death or disappearance. No grieving or questioning at all. Its totally unbelievable. The writing style was not to my liking. The story was there, but it never flowed organically. Things happened, people spoke, but it felt like a litany of facts rather than a story. There was just never any connection. The characters are stunted. They need development to make them feel real. Most come across as stereotypes rather than ‘real’ people. Not a bad read, but it didn’t pull me in and make me want to keep reading.
The main character was very unbelievable. He was knowledgable on some subjects that were far above a nine year old. Also nothing was said about his mother.
I received a free copy of this in return for an honest review.
I was looking forward to reading this book and really wanted to like it but I just didn't. The concept is great and had the potential to be brilliant but I found I simply couldn't become invested in any of the characters and the story just wasn't as thrilling as I expected it to be. It felt like there was a token stereotype from many different countries/cultures with no real character development. I don't particularly enjoy the first person style of writing but if the story is good enough I can get past it so I tried to put that personal dislike aside and didn't remove a star for it but by the end I just wasn't interested in what happens next and so won't be buying the next book.
I removed a star for the slightly sloppy proofreading as it's a personal bugbear of mine.
All in all I appreciate that I didn't pay for this but unfortunately wouldn't recommend it.
I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi, and I am far from a young adult. but Damn! if I didn't get sucked into this excellent story! Set in a dystopian (although not to far off from where we are now) world, a young child is horribly disfigured in a car accident. He is saved by his scientist father and some of his colleagues. We learn through out the telling of this tale that our protagonist is on the spectrum, and has new abilities with his newly created nanobot body and AI implant. I tell ya, this is a hell of a story and brilliantly told, and this series is one to watch!
John Taylor, a scientist has done what any parent would hope to be able to do. He has augmented his son Lucas with artificial limbs and an AI to assist him after severe injuries that left him in a coma for 5 years. Much has changed in those 5 years and now Lucas and his father and those who assisted them must hide from the government lest they take Lucas to recreate what his father has done. Written from the son's point of view, who also is in the autistic spectrum.
In 2050's a young boy Singularity in Nano biological form may save Humanity from a US Military Government that has continued into the despicable ruthlessness from the current day evil. This is an amazing story that I was captivated by and could not put down. I loved the story and the characters are believable and very likable. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What might the future look like for humanity? Part of a series, this book introduces Lukey, his dad and multiple other characters who worked to save him from a coma caused by an accident. It's an story about an alternate choice to prolonging or protecting life. Excellent read!
Very fast paced mystery with some cutting edge future tech. You will want to read it through in one setting!! Its going to be tough waiting for book 2.
Sometimes it is a character that grabs you and sometimes the writing. This book with a boy that is a one of a kind. This is a book that is both interesting and well written.
