Very sexy alpha cowboy!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💜💛💚
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌎🌏🌍🌎
Character development: 👤👤👤👤

The setting: Deer Haven, Texas

The Hero(s): Jacob Donovan - Ex CIA, Jacob’s last assignment was in Europe chasing a group of terrorists who had been kidnapping political interns, raping, torturing and murdering them for some unknown purpose. He is now retired from the CIA and is a Rancher on a successful ranch in Deer Haven.

The heroine: Sallie Hamblen (a.k.a. Kyra) - Sallie is in Deer Haven because she is running for her life. She has fake documentation provider to her by her wealthy step-father and he got work for her. Sallie recognizes Jacob immediately as the guy she spent three days and nights with six years ago before he left her with no word.

The Love Story: After spending an amazing weekend with Jake six years ago, Kyra waited for him for a week but he never came. She is now on the run from an unknown assailant who has found and attacked her more than once. She is devastated when Jacob doesn’t recognize her, but she doesn’t acknowledge that she knows him.

The story is very romance heavy and when it starts going, it is great. I liked the fact that Jacob is a cowboy and that he isn’t a playboy. He is selective about who he takes to bed and isn’t known for choosing women from town, so all the women who aren’t related to him are hoping he will choose them. Though one nigh after three years in town, he approaches Sallie and they are off to the races…

The book is super steamy! Jacob and Sallie have explosive chemistry and once they finally get together, they can’t keep their hands off each other, even though Jacob doesn’t remember her. Jacob is the quintessential dominant alpha male cowboy. Of course the fact that he used to be a spy doesn’t hurt either.

The book is a stand-alone which I like since I get sometimes get sick of always having cliffhanger endings. One thing I did notice is the fact that the POV kept switching within chapters. I am not an expert on POV, but most of the time in romance it seems to be in first or third person POV and is either told from the heroine’s POV or multiple POV’s switching every other or few chapters. This was third person and it seemed that within a scene, one paragraph it was the Hero and the next the heroine. I had to keep checking who it was as I was reading.

Granted, I generally don’t notice POV much, other than the fact that I really like books that have the POV of both protagonists. So this switching within a chapter could happen with a lot of books and I just happened to notice it more in this one. It wasn’t a huge deal and didn’t really take away from the story much but I thought I would mention it. Other than that the book was great and the last 20 percent was terrific.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a Cowboy Suspense Romance, and this is the 2nd book in the Moving Violations series. This book as a lot of adult bedroom moments. I wish it was more about the suspense drama going on then the fact the two main characters having sexy times moments. I think the book was well-written, and I could not put it down. I really enjoyed all the characters, and the suspense parts keep me guessing. I love the twist and turns even if I guess some of them. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Press) or author (Lora Leigh) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

This man was dangerous, and she knew it. Something about him warned her that he rarely played, but when he did, he played to win.

Lora Leigh books have been a guilty pleasure for years and will always be what I reach for when I want a super sultry story with an uber alpha.

This is book two in the series, but easily enjoyed as a standalone. I didn't love book 1, but I did enjoy this one quite a bit.

I won't spend too much time on the plot, because you can really gather most what you need from the blurb. Years ago, Sallie gave her virginity to a man that owned her, body and soul. They spent an unforgettable night between the sheets, only for him to disappear from her life. Sallie is also running for her life from a dangerous enemy while struggling to figure out why they're after her. Hiding in the small town, she comes face to face with the man that stole her heart all those years ago. The problem? He doesn't remember her.

Now if you're looking for a super hot story, look no further. If there's one thing that Leigh can write is one hot sexy scene. I also live for her uber alphas, and a CIA agent turned small town sheriff and with a filthy mouth is right up my alley. Sallie took me a bit to warm up to. She's a bit hot and cold. She won't give her heart away, but she can't turn him down when he kisses her. She wants him, she can't have him. She can't put him in danger by sharing her secret, but she continues to sleep with him.

Ultimately, where the story dwindled a bit for me were on the details. Or really, the consistency of them. The years were jumbled and jumped all over the place. Three nights spent together or one night spent together. She spent 2 years on the run or 3 years on the run. It's been 6 years or 3 years. I mean, it was all over the place and made me wonder if the published version will have this fixed.

There's also some details that are left unanswered at the end that left me hanging. I had hoped the epilogue may touch on them, but ultimately, they were just left mostly unresolved.

All that aside, I did still enjoy this. The added suspense element kept me turning the pages, and the chemistry between Sallie and Jacob kept me invested. If you're looking for a super steamy, suspenseful read, this one may do the trick.

First, I just want to say that I was sad to hear about Veronica Chadwick's passing. This series is what introduced me to this co-author. I'm a big fan of Lora Leigh, which is what drew me to this series. Her and Veronica's collaboration was seamless and I've had every intention of checking out more of Veronica's work. My prayers go out to her family.

Now for the book, Jacob is everything I've come to love about a Lora Leigh hero. He's very intense, pure alpha dominance, protective and possessive of what he considers his. And Sallie is his. His pursuit of her was a thing of beauty if you are a fan of the alpha hero.

That doesn't mean Sallie was some pushover. I really liked that she had self respect and didn't just fall at Jacob's feet. They were a great combination of what I like in my main characters.

Even though you learn real quick, I won't give this little tid bit away. Let's just say, Jacob and Sallie's reunion had a bit of twist/theme to it that I do enjoy. It made things more interesting on top of an already interesting plot behind the reason Sallie was running for her life.

This was a pretty quick read and it did end kind of abruptly, but I am hoping that's because we will be getting more in this series and more of all the interesting characters.

Wow! This was one hot and steamy read with plenty of drama and mystery to hold it all together.

May be a black-and-white image of 1 person and beard

While I enjoyed Sallie and appreciated her ability to endure the ordeal she’s been through, this book really got me with Jacob. He’s a super alpha hero that’s fiercely protective, extremely possessive and exhibits a streak of jealousy when the situation calls for it. And oh man, things between him and Sallie were explosive. Yeah, you can totally go there. They literally set the pages of this book on fire.

This has several surprises and along with all the steam, it’s actually got a great storyline running through it. The inclusion of a trio of brothers has me hoping we’ll be seeing them in the future as they all carry great potential to be just as amazing as Jacob.

Highly recommended if you like a strong alpha and a lot of heat.

Sallie has been in lust/love with Jacob for awhile. The stars align and they finally hook up, and boy to they hook up. That first night was hot, but they just get hotter after he realizes that one night wasn't enough. There's a bad guy from the past looking and causing trouble. Loved all his friends and cousins. (When Justice and Lily finally stop snipping at each other and hook up, it's gonna be hotter than this book.)

Now why only four stars, the ending sucked. Yes there's a HEA with no cliffy, but it just ended. No sweet wrap up, no epilogue...just done.

Lora Leigh has always written some hot and steamy books and this one is no different.

Jacob and Sallie are drawn to each other like moths to a flame. She knows why and he doesn’t. That is part of the mystery trying to figure out why he can’t remember Sallie from their past. I’ll give you a little spoiler - he has a valid reason.

Sallie was definitely wise and mature for her age. I kept forgetting that she is only 24 in this book. Which is amazing, so many times our heroines are written to act younger and totally immature.

Jacob was everything I love; hot, over protective, extremely possessive, bossy, ex CIA and a Cowboy to boot.

There is really no better mix (well maybe a biker).

So we have two great main characters in this hot little cowboy book and now you are probably wondering why this book was only 4 stars and not 5 for me? Well we all know how I feel about epilogues and endings right? This one just ended. Like I kept pushing on my kindle to turn to the epilogue and it wasn’t working. I almost called kindle support because there was no way it was just over. Was it a happily every after? Yes it was. But there was no sprinkles, no bow (which was definitely needed for a few loose ends in my opinion), no 5 minutes of reading in their future happily every after. Guys, you can’t do that to me. I NEED CLOSURE, like seriously!

All in all this was a solid smut-tastic read. I would definitely recommend picking it up if you are looking for your next hot romance to indulge in.

Loved the romance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was really looking forward to this story so I was happy I was able to get into it pretty quickly. The authors created a compelling read that was set up to add a little bit of intrigue to the story.
Something substantial happened in the past between these two characters and we get a little peeks into the event here and there. Sometimes it was a bit frustrating trying to piece together the entire story and it wasn’t until the end that much of it came together for the complete story.
But regardless of what happened in the past, these two have a fiery connection today. The authors write a story rich with yearning and heat that seems to envelop the reader. That hidden thread that connects two hearts is beautifully designed.
I was deeply connected to the story they tell. There were a few places that I got a bit lost while piecing together their past. But their future looked blissful as Jacob recognized a kindred spirit in Sallie. His protective personality is put to the test as the past and the future blend together at last.
A heated romance with plenty of fire and passion make these pages sizzle.
I haven't read a book by this author for a while and I forgot how steamy her books are.
This was a romance with some mystery, suspense and action.
Couple met in Switzerland 6 years back. She was 18 and he was 23 or 25. Had an affair and then he disappears. He was working for the government and was injured. His injury had side affects of not remembering his affair with heroine. He had an alias so she could never find him.
Three years latter they are living in the same town (he still has not recollection of what happened but has dreams of a mysterious woman). She's under an alias as someone has been stocking her and looking for her ex-husband (not a real marriage). For the next three years she avoids him until one night they are both at the same bar and have a one nightstand.
Well from their they begin an affair. We have the unfolding of their past and his memory as well as the suspense of the heroine being in danger.
Everything comes to head and all is revealed about the past. The hero's memory returns and a lot is made clear about what transpired in the past.
He's an possessive, alpha male. I loved him. She is sweet but tough. I did skim some of the sex scenes as it was a little much, but there might be some that will love it. 😂
Strong, Silent Cowboy is the second book in Lora Leigh and Veronica Chadwick's Moving Violations series and takes readers back to Deer Haven, Texas. Following former CIA agent Jacob Donovan, now a rancher, and his one three-night stand who shows up in town on the run from danger.
Their relationship moved pretty quickly and felt a little too fast considering Jacob and Sallie had a history. Jacob didn't recognize Sallie when she showed up in town but he lusted after her and had dreams of her, yet never acted on that. It led to a slow-burn type of romance in the beginning of the book that I found to be intriguing and still enjoyed it when it moved faster. The story was heavy on the romance which I did enjoy but I actually felt like the suspense took a back seat to everything else. Which I wouldn't have minded too much but in the end I felt like the mystery part of the book was too rushed and wasn't given enough space for detail.
Overall, this was an interesting story and I did like the relationship with Jacob and Sallie. There were a lot of steamy moments that were fun to read and also made the connection between them very clear.
* * * A Quick Review
We have a woman who had the nights of her life, experiencing what made her "a woman." She learned all, felt all with a man who made his mark and showed her what it should be like. He then disappeared in the night.
The man was undercover, had to leave, and then while working loses his ability to remember past times in his life.
Due to this complication, he can no longer be in the CIA, it is too dangerous.
Fast forward to now, he is on a ranch being the cowboy who just wants an easy life and love. Little did the man realize his past would be the woman he has his eyes on at the bar in town. There is something about her causing the draw...and she refuses to share she is running from her own past.
These two knock boots and eventually figure out there is something there.
Like all Lora Leigh writing, there are hot scenes she is known for.
This is the second book in the Moving Violations Series and My review is basically the same as for the first book: Lots of hot, steamy sex and a fairly good plot, what little there is of it. I would say that it is about 50-50, sex vs plot. But I do have to say that I was very intrigued by what little plot there was. Lots of angst, repetition and you really need to suspend reality in places.
Sallie Hamblen has been in this small northern California town for three years. She has a good job and a few close friends and secrets, lots of secrets. Secrets that, for some reason, someone wants her for. She also has come face to face with the man that rocked her world for a weekend six years ago and he doesn't remember her.
Jacob Donovan is a former CIA agent, now a rancher. His life is good, but he is plagued with memories of a mysterious lover he can't put a name to. Picking up Sallie from the bar just felt . . . right. Holding her in his arms felt right. Loving her felt like coming home and that scared the spit out of him. When Sallie is attacked, Jacob comes to her rescue and now he demands to know exactly why Sallie has become the face of his dream lover before whoever is chasing her gets them both killed.
What would you do if you moved to a new town to run away from people that were chasing you and you found the man that rocked your world three years earlier...and he didn't remember you? Well, that is what Sallie Hamblen is faced with when she moves to Deer Haven, California.
Jacob Donovan was recruited by the CIA when he finished basic training at the age of 18. He was on a mission in Switzerland gathering Intel on a terrorist group when he met Sallie and they spent a fantastic weekend together, but he never returned to her like he said he would so she returned to her home in the US.
Sallie is on the run from people and she doesn't even know why they are chasing her. Her step-father has helped her procure a new name, and a job that sets her up in Deer Haven where Jacob lives as a rancher. When they are first introduced her heart speeds up and he has NO CLUE who she is. Well, isn't that kick in the head.
This story spans over six years, from when they first meet to when they finally get together. This story had great promise, and if I was rating the book on the hotness factor alone it would have gotten 5 stars because it was HOT, but I felt the story line wasn't developed to it's potential and I am left with a couple of questions that most likely will never get answered. I thought everything would wrap up in an Epilogue or something but it didn't so I'm left wondering about a few things.
Strong, Silent Cowboy can be read as a standalone even though it's the second book in the Moving Violations Series. This story revolves around one couple and there is no cross over between the books other than being friends.
If you enjoy Erotic Romantic Suspense than I would recommend this book to you.
Happy Reading!!!
Audiobook Review
Overall 2 stars
Performance 4 stars
Story 1.5 stars
Strong, Silent Cowboy had a lot of potential, but too many inconsistencies and a lack of a coherent plot derailed it. The bit of suspense helped move the story along, but unfortunately I often found myself with more questions than answers. The sex scenes were plentiful (bordering on too many), but the language and dialogue during most of them made me cringe. Phrases like "feminine juices", "glistened with her cream", "...stabbed inside", etc, really took me out of the moment. I just really wanted to see more connection between Jacob and Sallie (besides in the bedroom). All the action felt a bit anticlimactic after all the years Sallie spent running and the book ended very abruptly with quite a few loose ends.
The narration by Lidia Dornet is one of the only reasons I persisted with this novel. She's a new to me narrator and her performance was very compelling. I thought she did a great job voicing all of the characters, especially Sallie. This is my first book by Lora Leigh, and though it was entertaining enough to finish, I don't think I will be reading any more by this author.
I’m always looking for a good romantic suspense and this synopsis sounded perfect...too bad it’s not at all what I got as a reader.
Sallie and Jacob had potential. They both have secrets and connections and a secret connection between them. The idea of their previous weekend was a sort of new to me plot thread that had me intrigued. Sadly, instead of captivating me, it spiraled into inconsistencies and bland inner monologues.
Plot wise, it’s a mess. There are a lot of repetitive (and icky) word choices, more sex scenes than conversations, and no real explanation of wtf is going on until the story is nearly over. Oh, and top it all of with a very abrupt ending that, for me, left the story feeling unfinished.
Overall, this had little to no build up and tension was definitely something I needed in a story like this. I kept reading because I couldn’t look away (basically why it’s a 2 star rating), but I won’t be reading any more of this series.
Second in the Moving Violations romantic suspense series and revolving around "Sallie Hamblen" and Jacob Donovan.
This eARC was sent to me by NetGalley and St Martin's Press for an honest review.
My Take
Leigh/Chadwick use third person dual protagonist point-of-view, so we get into both Sallie's and Jacob's heads with plenty of whining on Sallie's part. For his part, Jacob is obsessing about his attraction to Sally and wondering what he forgot all those years ago.
Action-wise, there is plenty of sex in Strong, Silent Cowboy with a melodramatic story weaving it together. The prose is amazingly repetitive and quite confusing; it's all that sex, the year discrepancies, and Sallie's indecisiveness. She wants him. She doesn't want him. She should flee right this second, but then his lips meet hers and she's a goner. I gotta admit I do admire Sallie, but she also ticks me off with her mental whining about how she must run, so no one else will be hurt...even though she's had some pretty solid proof that Jacob can help her.
I gotta think they wrote and edited it fast because there is one huge, I mean, HUGE, issue I have with this. It's those years. I swear, my head spun with how the years flipped back and forth, rarely settling on one single set. Well, there are other issues that niggle away at me, too...keep reading.
"It had been three years...since he'd disappeared..." and "She'd spent three years agonizing over him, two years of that time, she'd spent running for her life." Now, it's three years later when the story starts up. A total of six years since her lover up and disappeared. So, Sallie has spent two years running for her life, but then it turns out that she was "forced to run from home ... four years ago". Huh? Then, "she'd been running for nearly five years..."
It was also three passion-filled days and nights, then suddenly she was "remembering that single night far too often".
I think I'm jealous of Kara's first time. It's been six years since she exploded with those three days and nights, and she's still obsessed with the man with whom she spent that time. It is sad that Jake had been her only lover...and it's been six years! Oy.
Well, Sallie may not stand up for herself very well, but Dillerman's customers know to respect her and anyone who works for her. I love it! She is a woman who cares.
Hmmm, a man who's interested in how a woman's home is decorated. And one who's interested in giving her pleasure first. Don't we all dream of a guy like that??? But why would Jacob give Sallie a bad time about not letting him protect her when she first arrived in Deer Haven? How was she supposed to know what his past had been? Why would he think she'd have a claim on him? And I certainly can't blame her for being angry that he didn't remember her!
I do wish that the Culpepper brothers had tried harder with Sallie. It wasn't too convincing. I do like Gram, lol. She's one heckuva social media busybody, although she does have compassion and all her wits with a great sense of humor.
Okay, I'm confused again. Why is it that Sallie doesn't want Dillerman's to make a profit? And how can Sallie say that the man who's after her never hurt anyone who tried to get in his way, but Sallie also says a neighbor who tried to help her was beaten. And if Lily and Shay don't have extra clothes at Jacob's ranch why is it that Lily managed to get "dressed in jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers she kept in his spare room"?
The ambassador has gone out of his way to try and hide Sallie. Yet Sallie is so negative about him. That he's never cared for her. I am also impressed that the ambassador has time to work on building his consulting business. As for Sallie's mother...ick. What a cold fish she was!
It's that hindsight you get as an adult when you look back over your childhood and suddenly see that life from an adult perspective. Dang it.
Why did he marry her?? What was the point? Why did he abandon her? More important, why did he lie to her?
I dunno. There are a ton of loose ends in this one, and I certainly didn't care for the abrupt ending. Well, that's probably because of the loose ends...
The Story
Three nights of passion, and he left. Three years later and he doesn't even recognize her. She can't have changed that much. Could she?
It's Sallie's face that haunts Jacob's dreams, but he doesn't understand why. And dammit, he's going after her, despite his reputation.
The Characters
Sallie Hamblen is the new manager for Dillerman's Feed and Supply in Deer Haven, California, who bought the old Hanover place. Lord knows how long she'll stay, for "Sallie" has been on the run for years. Megan Dougal had been Sallie's mother, who had married Rance Dougal, an ambassador. Ray Masser is Dougal's current aide.
Jacob Donovan is one of Deer Haven's most eligible ranchers — and related to most of its citizens. Gram, a.k.a. Mary Ann Donovan, is Jacob's grandmother, who now lives with him on the Rocking D. Tyler Donovan, Gram's son, had adopted an eight-year-old. John Grange is the ranch foreman...and I think he's dating Gram. Jacob's ranch hands include Kenny and are almost all former military. Missy is Kenny's wife. Lily, who prefers the online college experience, and Shay are Sallie's friends and Jacob's third cousins.
The Culpepper brothersJustice (runs the ranch and its various businesses), Rancor (joined the FBI), and Pride (went into the military until his injury) — own a nearby ranch. I think Keller might be their ranch foreman. They're all good, reliable friends with Jacob.
Dillerman's Feed and Supply...
...supplies four counties. Stanley Dillerman is the greedy owner. I'm not sure who Myron Dillerman is, but he owed Dougal a favor. Tara Danner is Sallie's new assistant who becomes a friend. Roger Oakley is the floor manager enjoys overseeing things on the weekends. Daniel is the dock manager. Roy Davison is the bullying supply manager. Jim Allen is his assistant. Cora is the head of the pet department.
Prader's is another feed and supply store, but over in the next county. Bit of a price gouger, they are.
Rhonda Foley is the head of the Chamber of Commerce, who tries every year to ensnare Sallie's help. Chet Morris is the bank president and Rhonda's brother-in-law. The Ladies Auxiliary, of which Gram is a member, has a betting pool going on Jacob and on Sallie.
Three years ago...
Jake Rossiter, with his exact memory, was attached to the embassy in Switzerland. Kyra Bannon and John Dillon were aides to the ambassador. John Milton had married Sallie and dumped her a year later. Seems John Kenton Mayler had been married five years ago (eight years ago today).
Sister Rebecca had been the beloved headmistress of a boarding school. Nonny had been Sallie's caregiver before that.
Forefront is...
...a Swiss-based militant group intent on destabilizing economic partnerships between major nations. Former Swiss military and law enforcement, they had a preference for torture-murders of young women. Jorg Deverson is one of them.
The Cover and Title
The cover has a fuzzy background of a light summer sky with prairie and mountains in the background. In the forefront is a cowboy in jeans and a black shirt and hat, hauling a saddle over his right shoulder. That hat is tilted down so we don't get to see his eyes, but that jaw...ooh là là... At the very top in a deep red is an info blurb followed by the authors' names above Jacob's hat. To the right of his head is the information, in a deep blue, that this is "a novel". The title begins mid-chest on Jacob in a combination font of serif and script in yellow.
The title is true, for Jacob Donovan is a Strong, Silent Cowboy...until you get him in bed!
3.5 stars!
This is the second book in the Moving Violations series and features Sallie Hamblen and Jacob Donovan. Sallie and Jacob have three nights of passion that changes both of their lives but Jacob, an undercover CIA agent, disappears after. Sallie is left with a broken heart and no idea what happened. But there are sinister forces around her that even she doesn't understand and she soon finds herself on the run from an unknown assailant.
Years later she finds herself face-to-face with the man that broke her heart and he has no recollection of her and the time they spent together. Jacob knows there is something special about her but can't put his finger on it. His obsession with her grows and he soon finds that he will never be able to let her go. When Jacob finds out that Sallie is in danger, secrets unravel and the race begins to find out who is after Sallie and why. Can Sallie and Jacob put aside the pains from their past and make a future? Who is after Sallie? Will Jacob remember what he has lost?
I enjoyed this. The heat level was on point for what I like in my romance novels. It was hot and passionate (although I kept thinking Jacob was going to be kinkier and he never was). I liked Sallie and Jacob as characters and I liked the side characters. The suspense element was well done and kept me guessing. And I love cowboys so there's that.
description
So why 3.5 stars? A few reasons...
1. It was repetitive. Some of the writing got repetitive with the inner thoughts of the MCs. Like I get it...Jacob doesn't remember you. It's been 3 years...5 years...or 6? I wasn't entirely clear on the timeline. Jacob is never letting her go now. Nope never letting her go.
description
2. The ending. I'm sorry but what in the hell? I needed a little more closure than that. It was HFN but it just ended really abruptly. It was like someone texting with you back and forth quickly and then poof they throw their phone in a river and run.
description
3. I'm not sure if I'm just dumb but the change in POV threw me a few times.
description
Overall, a fun and steamy read that I enjoyed but wouldn't necessarily read again and again or anything.
My Review:
Strong Silent Cowboy is the second book in the "Moving Violations" series and this is the first time that I have read this companion author but you can definitely feel the Lora Leigh influence in this book, she definitely has a A typical style that many readers will recognize. I absolutely adored this book. It starts out so SLOW though, so keep that in mind. Which is why I would recommend this in audio. Or just keep being patient with this one here. Its definitely worth it as the second half of the story is epically beautiful and so intense. But Keep in mind that if you don't like much steam in your book, to skip over Lora Leigh....she does a LOT of sex scenes lol But the good news is that she makes up for it and really builds that emotional connection in those steamy scenes. I really was intrigued by the plot. In the beginning of the story you can sense that there is so much more going on, but the pieces to the puzzle slowly start to come into place. Now there is a ton of miscommunication especially from the heroine. The hero has suffered some portion of amnesia, so much of what happens is on her. I didn't truly understand her reasoning for not communicating very well with him. Yes she is in danger, but its because of him lol and yes he doesn't remember her but she isn't curious why? And doesn't want to reveal it all to him? And I was so proud of her step father. I loved him so much because he was willing to share the truth even though she was taking her sweet time and there were some things I don't think she would have shared that our hero definitely needed to know.
Overall I found this story to be beyond fascinating and I had such a solid time with it. It kept me on edge and even though I felt like the steam was a bit too much at times, I still had a great time and eager to read the rest of the series.
Reviewed for Romancing the Readers Blog: http://www.romancingthereaders.com/20...
It might have been a little long since we've had a book by Lora Leigh but it was well worth it. This is the second book in the Moving Violations series. I almost reread the first book in the series to remember it because it was out in 2019. Unfortunately, I was a little lazy so that didn't get done. The good news is that this one is pretty much standalone. The first book is mentioned but only in passing.
I'm going to start out by saying that I really loved the characters in this book. The Culpepper brothers remind me of her Nauti family which I just love. A lot happens within the story and you have to pay attention to make sure you don't miss anything.
The idea of how Jacob and Sallie met and parted is a good one. I kinda wish the beginning of the book handled it better. I must have needed more of an explanation because I was a little lost. I did get into the story pretty quick so I got over the confusion. Once in the story, it moves really fast.
I really love Jacob too. Any man that lets his grandma live with him is okay in my books. She's a fun lady and I wish she was in the book more. Since the story moves so fast you don't have time to question anything. The great part is that even though the book is fast-paced you really get to know the characters within it. I like that about her writing.
You'll feel for both of these characters they've been through some crap. Sallie more than Jacob. Her family life really sucked. How she turned out so nice is beyond me. As a whole, this is a wonderful story. There is plenty of action and sexy scenes to keep you reading more add some great characters and you have a wonderful book.
3.75 stars.
I really enjoy Romantic Suspense, especially when it involves cowboys and small towns. After reading book one in this series, I knew I'd read the next book.
Sallie and Jacob
The H/h have an over-the-top amount of chemistry; with just one look at each other, I knew things were going to get hot. Having both perspectives made the book incredibly erotic. As with the first book in the series, I felt there was way too many pages of intimacy. These too were so intense that they couldn't be in the same room with each other without touching, kissing, etc. I enjoy intimacy between the H/h because it helps to show me their true feelings. However, this book had pages and pages and pages of it and I found myself skimming to get past it all. In my opinion that unfortunately took away from the story. My biggest intrigue was the suspense/mystery aspect and I felt there were too many cracks in the story despite how exciting parts of the book were. I had many questions by the end where I assumed everything would have been wrapped up nicely. Instead, I did not have closure on a few things. Like, why did John do what he did to Sallie and lie to Jacob in the hospital? How did Rance end up at that last conflict when did? Although the book ended in a happily-ever-after, I expected an epilogue to tie everything together and give me answers to questions I still had. I was disappointed with no epilogue.
I also had some of the same issues after reading the first book in the series; questions that needed answers. Even though I felt let down with a few things, I overall enjoyed the book. The talents of the authors are amazing and they definitely know how to give you all the angsty, emotional feels using a broad imagination. Truthfully, it was the suspense/mystery aspect of the book I enjoyed the most.
This second book in the series is a standalone and you don't have to read book one prior.
I just want to say something else. I recently learned that Veronica Chadwick recently passed away. My heart goes out to her family and close friends. I am sure she will be missed and it saddens me that we won't have more stories from her. She will be missed.
This is my honest and unbiased review and I thank you for taking the time to read it. :)
Content warning: miscarriage, possessiveness
This one was...interesting. I won it in a giveaway and the person I won it from knew cowboy romances can annoy me in general so she said she sent me the steamiest one she had - she wasn’t kidding!
The steam was 🔥 (first action within the first 15 pages), but there was a low level of confusion for me about what *exactly* was going on for a good 70 pages or so. Once I got past that, the story got better, but it wasn’t great.
It definitely was engaging - I finished it quickly - but I went back and forth from enjoying the story to cringing about it. There was alluding to Jacob being this strong, almost dominant-type lover (which Sallie was into, not a consent issue), but it was a lot of him thinking about how she was his because he had “marked” her (literally because they didn’t use a condom), and it just seemed...not great.
I would categorize this as romantic suspense...light? The romance was the main focus, and there was a storyline with danger involved, but it just seemed like it couldn’t quite find its footing. (There was a quick mention of a miscarriage but literally it was less than a paragraph and I couldn’t figure out the point of including it).
One of the authors (Veronica Chadwick), passed away in 2019 and I think the other author (Lora Leigh, who seemed to be a close friend) finished the book. I want to be respectful of that (I can only imagine how hard that would be), but I definitely think that contributed to some of the inconsistencies.
I wouldn’t recommend it as the best book ever, but I enjoyed a lot of the story so....maybe recommend?
This is a contemporary second chance romantic suspense.
This is definitely one to avoid if you prefer not to have a significant portion of the story taken up describing, in detail, the couples' "hot bedroom activities". Sorry, but there was just too much of that for me and it actually detracted from what otherwise was a great plot. The plot itself has great potential, with plenty of mystery and a great community being protected by Jacob Donovan and the Culpepper brothers and their employees. Jacob is a strong alpha male, intransigent, overbearing, domineering and determined to protect those he cares about - which includes Sallie Hamblen, especially when her life is in danger. He's also definitely not silent and seems to take pride in having marked Sallie with a huge hickey to show she was his. She's not really a pushover, except where he's concerned!
The "but" in this review is because it felt as if  someone decided the story needed padding out to make it the required length and, rather than giving more details about the intriguing mystery and elements of suspense or life on the ranch ,they just went back to sharing too many hot and steamy scenes described in too much detail and taking over too much of the book length. It also seems very strange to call the hero a cowboy in the title of the book and then never hear anything about him actually working as a cowboy in any way other than living on a ranch and introducing Sallie to one horse (which he doesn't ride!) You may well not agree with me and thoroughly enjoy the whole book, but, as usual, I'm being honest and it wouldn't be great if we all liked exactly the same things!
Thank  you to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and, obviously, honestly reviewed.
~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~
This is the second book in the series - and whilst Jacob appears in the previous book, and the leads in that book are mentioned, there is really little other overlap of the couples, or the storyline. I have to admit I was a little disappointed, and I had assumed that Hunter and Samantha would have featured more.
We get the story from both viewpoints, so we soon know that there is history between the two leads, but that only Sallie has memories of it. She has been on the run for many years, and although confused by Jacob ignoring her for the last three years, she has settled down more than she had expected. If I had been her, I would have avoided a few of the lonelier places she found herself, but I am a bit of a worrier! There are some great side characters - such as Jacob's Gran, and the twins at the ranch, as well as the Culpeppers and Tara. They add to the levels of comfortable that Sallie has achieved at Deer Haven, and increase her reasons to stay - even if Jacob seems to have no idea that they once spent a weekend together.
As they finally spend some time together, Jacob starts to try and understand who exactly Sallie is, and through his CIA contacts the mystery starts to unravel. It is full of twists and turns, as well as some hot passionate encounters between them. Some of the plot is wildly complicated. but it is a fun read for sure - and these two definitely deserve to have a more peaceful future.
Do you remember me
This author really shines where she can have her hot alpha males find and protect the women who hold their hearts, even when they don’t recognize them at first. I really enjoyed every step of the buildup in Jacob and Sallie’s relationship, each new turn of the page brought more depth to them as characters and as a couple. Not to mention the steam that just wafted off the pages anytime these two were within touching range. The author kept the danger and intrigue high, and I was lost in the story before the end of the first chapter. This book is a fast-paced read that I was sad to see end because the story was just that good. Although it is part of a series, this book can be read as a stand-alone, and I can’t wait to re-read the first two books until the next book in the series comes out.
I like Lora's books, I dont find that they have crazy drama, I dont feel jittery wondering what the heck is coming next, however that being said when I see one of her books I tend to grab it because I know it will be an enjoyable book and not make me crazy or too sad, which right now I dont need. Wit these two main characters you felt the chemistry and you were good at going along the ride with them. I liked but I hated not getting an epilogue, I know I know can't ask for to much, but was it too much to get me a little one or two page epilogue..that would be all that I could complain about Enjoy!
I really enjoyed Strong, Silent Cowboy. The dynamic between Sallie and Jacob was quite heated and I was absolutely there for it. You know from the beginning that something happened with them in the past and he doesn't seem to remember her. I assumed from the get go that there was an underlying reason behind that, but I understand why an insecure young woman wouldn't think that way. She would just assume she didn't make an impression on him and was forgettable.
You know that Sallie is running for her life from a group that is looking for someone they think she knows the location of. She believes it's only a matter of time before they show up again since she's been in this town for quite a while.
I really liked that this book had a mystery/suspense factor blended with a cowboy storyline. The characters were solid and relatable. In addition, there were interesting support characters which enriched the storyline. It was an enjoyable read and I hope there will be more in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC. I chose to voluntarily review this book and the opinions contained within are my own.
Woot! Very smexy, hawt read! The intrigue starts at page one and had my heart beating fast for most of the book. Sallie Hamblen is what I’d call lost…there’s so much going on with her, and in her past, and I don’t want to give any spoilers. She doesn’t trust easily – nor should she – and then she runs smack, dab into that past…
Jacob Donovan is a former CIA agent who has a ranch. The ranch connection is important as that is how he pops up on Sallie’s radar. Read the book; Ms. Leigh and Ms. Chadwick do a MUCH better job of weaving this intrigue and story than I ever could. Each chapter peeled back another tiny bit of layer of the story and kept me reading straight thru.
It is a VERY sexy story, what I’d expect from these authors, but it is also a big part of Strong, Silent Cowboy. Really enjoyed this read.
