No Quarter November: The 2018 Anthology

Rate this book
There is a time for rhetorical qualifications. That time was not No Quarter November. During November 2018, Douglas Wilson hoisted the Jolly Roger and went merrily swashbuckling his way through the culture and the church. Where he might usually make careful qualifications and check all the "on the other hand" boxes, he instead wrote a series of blog posts that slashed right to the heart of various matters. From the worst of the worldly (sexual chaos and atheistic evolution) to the frailties of the faithful (lame church music and foppish liturgical garb), both foes and friends got skewered. This book is the resultant shish kebab.

I write in order to make the little voices in my head go away. Thus far it hasn't worked.

This book is a collection of online articles posted by Douglas Wilson on his website during the month of November in 2018. The online articles can be deemed as "Douglas Wilson Unleashed" because there is not as much of a filter to him as is the case with his other articles. As a result, there are no qualifications made by him in this book and this is actually a good thing. Wilson is a breath of fresh air as we live in a time where political correctness abounds and a departure from the truth of Scripture and public discourse has occurred. In my opinion, Wilson will always have the "Moral High Ground" because of his reasoning from Scripture. This does not mean he is right about everything, but what it does mean is that he is consistent with his reasoning and his reasoning has a Standard. Moreover, Wilson is a modern day prophet and is able to spot things and predict things that are not as clear to the average "culture consumer." I appreciate his discernment, wisdom, and wit and benefit greatly from his cultural analysis. Lastly, he is an example of a man who does not fear men and one who examines the narrative of the culture and discerns if it aligns or opposes the narrative found in the Bible.

This book is a collection of blog posts, which I read as they were published. As usual, Wilson's satire and wit cuts right to the issue. Sometimes these cuts make me wince, but cuts are often needed to get to the heart.

This was a great set of blog posts, and it's fun to have an anthology published. My wife and I had a great time reading these out loud one or two at a time and they were great for discussing afterwards.

Wilson's other works include a cult in small town Idaho, a heavily plagiarized book about how American slavery was just dandy, defending a pedophile after he had sexually assaulted a young woman, holding talks at the local college about how sexism is good and Catholics are bad, and photoshoots where he stands on the pride flag and suggests we ostracize our LGBTQ friends and family. Give his name a good search on the Southern Poverty Law Center's website too, it's got disturbing quotes about his views on rape.

great read

This author is one of the most direct, and frank, I've read. I've loved just about all of his books that I've read so far. This is great for any Christians that want to dive deeper into more practical parts of Christianity.

The chapter “Your Suburban Church Needed a Drum Kit the Way J.S. Bach Needed a Kazoo” is one of my favorites. It’s such a good way of articulating the considerations of QUALITY as well as style of music in a church service. But this whole thing is so spot on that I’ve read it more than once.

5 star content but with many typos and editing mistakes. Overall, pretty good.
