Shadowkeeper

Rate this book
Death can die as easily as any other man.

Cedra has kept her sister safe for years. None of that changes just because Pethra got herself kidnapped by Death himself.

Claiming the questionable aid of Death’s weary older brother, the Shadowkeeper, Cedra forces her way through mist and shadows in pursuit of her hapless sister. But Death wants much more than he has revealed.

A wish that will splinter her and Pethra’s world no matter what she chooses: death, or a chain.

A retelling of Hades and Persephone, mixed loosely with the story of Castor and Pollux, Shadowkeeper will sweep you into a world of wavering mists, shadowy passages, and the love of two siblings fastening them with ties stronger than Death himself.

Hope Ann

Hope Ann likes to think of herself as an undercover resistance fighter in the battle for truth. In reality, her bluntness and sarcasm make her anything but ‘undercover.’ The oldest of nine children, she has an arsenal of experience ranging from jiu-jitsu, living in the Dominican Republic for two years, and working with troubled teenagers.

Her greatest struggle is realizing she can’t do everything, but it hasn’t stopped her from periodically trying.

Based in central Indiana, her day-to-day life involves brainstorming theories about Sanderson’s Cosmere with her husband, collecting situation-perfect memes, and struggling to remember the difference between ‘effect’ and ‘affect’. She is the author of nine fantasy books, a writing coach, and a founding board member of Story Embers.

What a beautiful and dark and slightly depressing but still beautiful tale!

I loved the premise. I'm always DOWN for retellings especially of myths. This book was also beautifully described, I could actually see what was going on.

My only complaint was that the world building was a little confusing. I was kind of just thrown in there with all of these terms and this world that I had no idea about and it was never explained. So I spent basically the first half of this book wondering what the heck was going on. This is my first book by Hope Ann so I don't know if she actually had other books in this world that explained it.

But the world was well fleshed even if it took me a while to figure it out. I really enjoyed the Aara's powers, they were so cool. Honestly, I would have loved to have seen this as a longer book. Of course, I say that about every short story that I read. I liked Cedra and the Shadowkeeper but seriously he did take a while to get into the story (you know what I'm talking about). I would definitely read more about them in the future.

ALL THE STARS FOR THAT ENDING THOUGH!!!

I received a free copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

*drowns in a sea of tears*

It's a book about death. How terribly sad could it be?

I will never recover. Never. This book will forever remain in my memories burning away until all I have left to think about is how bittersweet that ending was. How terribly heartbreaking it was. How my very being was just splattered across the whole universe and I will never again be put together right, even if all my pieces are found.

The passion with which this book is told brings fierce feelings and much remorse. I have never read anything so sorrowful, nor passionate. This book triumphs them all and I admire Hope Ann. The deep feelings and sorrowful story that is hiding behind these pages has become to much for my mind. I am emotionally unstable and Death has never been given a truer perspective.

The description was beyond marvellous. I have an infinity of stars sitting over here, begging to be spilled into this rating and review. I am only to eager to read more of Hope Ann's work. Her passionate words strung together on a line dancing with death, causing readers to be lost in a world so huge we will never escape. I will never escape.

The Characters were more real then real. It is extremely impossible to describe how much this book has affected me and how well these characters were shaped. They have such a feel and love, such a desire to fulfill the loss of their loved ones. Every character in here is fighting for someone. And their fighting so fiercely it will cost them something, but they are willing to trade such. It all boils down to pure love. Love that I have never found so sufficiently portrayed.

Overall I cannot recommend this book enough. Everyone should read it. Everyone. And when I make that statement I do not make it lightly. I make it with a heart full of overwhelming emotions that believes an author has never created such a powerful book. Such a Novella.

A mystical story with all the sibling relationships! It's so complex, despite being a novelette, and the concept is beautiful.

Absolutely looking forward to this one releasing.

What I Liked:

The best thing in this book was Death.... That sounded much better in my head, lol. (Really Death was scary, but...)

And actually the Shadowkeeper is pretty cool.

I loved all the characters in this story. There is some really great sibling dramatics. Probably one of the best things was how the characters, Death and the Shadowkeeper, were represented. I honestly have never read the legend that this book is retelling, but I have heard some stories where Death is a character and not just the thing that happens. I really loved Cedra's sass, she really made the book. I also loved Pethra's caring nature towards others.

This book is very emotional, I was nearly crying. And the ending, wow. I LOVED IT!!!

What I Didn't Like:

So I kind of felt like I was just thrown in the world and expected to know how it works. And, well, I was a little confused. I never really understood how the magic worked. I wished I knew more about the world.

It was a really cool world and I would have loved to explore it a little more. I think this book would've been five-star material if it was a little longer and showed us the characters normal lives before throwing us into the conflict. Either that or had this book as a sequel rather than the first book that we see in the series (I'm not sure if this is going to be a series yet I'm just assuming). I actually did really enjoy how this book was written; I was just a little disappointed that it didn't explain some of the world a little more. Plus I was a little confused.

Content in Book:

1. Death. I mean, duh. *eye roll*

2. Violence. (Blood, killing people, etc.)

3. Ghosts.

4. Dead bodies.

5. Magic.

Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:

Those who want to read about Death as a character. Those who want to read a story about close siblings. Those who like sad books.

3.5 stars? Maybe? I DON'T EVEN KNOW. I HAVE FEELINGS.

Vivid, intense, fascinating. Though a little melancholy and dark for me and sort of sad, so I don't really know how I feel about it. I have so many feels. o.o

So I'm not sure I like it, in one sense, but I keep thinking about it, and I bet I should have known more about the mythology it's based on so that I would know what to expect. XD

While I'm not totally happy with how things turned out (aaahh!), I suppose it could have been way worse. XD And some of it was sort of epic, in a poetic, bittersweet sort of way. I suppose any kind of story about Death is going to be... interesting. :P

ANYWAY. I have mixed feelings about it but a lot of it was really, really good, and I do love the characters. :D Particularly Halcion!

Hope Ann’s latest novella is arriving today, and I was privileged to get to read it ahead of time (which in no way affects my review). Shadowkeeper is inspired by the myth of Castor and Pollux and the story of Hades and Persephone, which is awesome in and of itself, but then you add in snarky, stubborn characters whose family means more to them than anything and it becomes even better.

The worldbuilding in this book is wonderful. It’s been good in the other two Hope Ann books I’ve read, too, but I think it most comes through and it’s most clear in Shadowkeeper. I really enjoyed learning more about the magic system she’s created.

I also enjoyed the characters. Cedra is stubborn and fiercely protective of her sister, Pethra, which I loved. It’s rare to find such strong family ties in YA (at least in my experience), so the relationship dynamics between Cedra and Pethra were encouraging to see. The relationship between Death and The Shadowkeeper were also really intriguing, and very well-written. I did have trouble telling Cedra and Pethra apart throughout the book–their names are similar and their voices aren’t especially distinct from each other–but I was able to keep enough of a mental image of each one based on Hope’s character images that I was able to remind myself which was which.

I really enjoyed the plot–it centered around all the sibling dynamics, which I already talked about–and overall the book was a really good read. :)

4 Stars.

Can we just take a second and drool over how beautiful that cover is? It's stunning! I love the creativity in it and the design, and I love how blue and dark and dreary it is!

Okay, now on to the review!

Shadowkeeper was a very interesting novella. I thought the world was creative and the characters were well developed even though the story was so short. The relationship between the sisters was really refreshing and very sweet, but also normal (as in the normal "if you do this thing I'm going to kill you" that goes on between siblings). I think a lot of authors make their sibling characters too much alike, but Hope Ann did a great job of keeping them similar but also different.

The world was dreary, dark, and mysterious, as a world about death and the rift ought to be. I found myself intrigued more and more as I continued through the story's pages. The starlight, healing, moss weaving, and stone weaving abilities were fascinating and so cool. Though I must say I was disappointed I didn't see more of the powers and what the characters were really capable of with them. Hope Ann kept hinting at what each of the sisters could do, but she didn't really show much of the extent of their powers. I mean a stone weaver sounds so cool! I'd like to see how those powers can really work and what Cedra could do with them.

I understand that this little book is a novella and isn't meant to be a full-length novel. However, I did find myself a little disappointed with how short it was, and I was a little confused toward the beginning as well. Almost like I jumped right in the middle of something instead of beginning a whole new story. I kept checking to see if I'd accidentally skipped something, or if there had been another book previous to this one. On page one you see Cedra sitting with the Shadowkeeper and conversing with him, but Hope Ann doesn't really go into great detail as to why Cedra was sitting with him. It almost seemed random as though Cedra had spotted him and plopped herself down in the chair opposite of him for no reason whatsoever. It was a little confusing, and slightly disappointing because I did really enjoy the story and would have liked to see more of this scene. It could have had some great potential!

Overall, though, the story was great, creative, interesting and eerie in a way that made me want to finish it all in one sitting. I loved the spooky atmosphere, and I loved the rift's voice and how it talked to certain people. It was a really great story and I hope to see more great things from Hope Ann in the future!

I think this book could be appropriate for anyone, though I would recommend it more to teens and young adults more than children just because of the complexity of the plot and the darkness within the pages.

I hope you give Shadowkeeper a chance, and I hope you enjoy it!

Happy reading!

This is a good book with a good concept that could have been amazing it it were expanded and smoothed out a bit. The focus on sibling relationships was excellent, and the concept of Death and the Shadowkeeper is as well. That said, I felt a bit lost at times because things moved so quickly, and I semi-frequently got characters' names confused.

I really enjoyed this story. It was sadder than I thought it would be, but the world was really cool and I liked the sisters. I kind of wished Halcion did more, I wanted to see a little bit more from him, he still seemed a bit depressed by the end and I wanted more hope. It was there, I just wanted more.
I will say, I was a little confused by all the rift walking and rift talk. But I think I was able to understand well enough to understand the story.
I also somewhat expected a romance because of the "Hades and Persephone" aspect. There was no romance. At all. Which is fine, I don't normally go for romance anyway, just a warning to anyone expecting it, it's not there.
It's a short enjoyable read, I finished it in a couple of hours. I'd recommend it happily.

*reaches behind her wings to pull out a sticker book* *flips it open to a page of star stickers* Here we are. *peals off four star stickers to stick on the book* I give it four stars. *nods*

Between Cedra’s determination to protect her sister, her sister wandering off to help people, and Shadowkeeper being all mysterious (What? I like mysterious characters.), it kept me wanting to know what happened next. The world, characters, and plot were well done. It had a good ending. I enjoyed it. *tries to find the balance between spoilers and not being vague* In short it’s an interesting novella about two sisters who look out for each other and end up facing Death.

If you don't read this book, you're wrong.
Simply said.
Between the relationships, the amazing characters of each person, the magic and the cool implementation of it, Shadowkeeper and his scarf-y cuteness, this book is and has everything.
I absolutely love it, and it is one of the BEST books I've ever read.
It's gripping, I was literally gasping and shouting, that's how good it was.
Read it!

First of all: the characters. Amazingly lifelike. I could feel their emotions and see their different personalities clearly.
Then she hits us with that ending. Not expecting that. LOVED it.
Definitely recommend if you like fantasy and retellings.
(And if you're sad and don't want to leave when you reach the last page, just start over ;) )

Really good, much better than I expected. I loved the description and characters, but parts of it were confusing. I also think Halcion could have gone through a bit more development, but the end does hint at it, so that's satisfactory.

I think I'll be looking out for more of Hope's work in the future.

This was my first foray into the author’s work, though I’ve seen her around for a while. Well, my library holds were delayed, the cover looked cool and gosh darn it, I decided to take a chance. I was glad I did!

The worldbuilding:

I felt as if I were stepping into an established world with weather patterns and ice caps and migrating birds. If this isn’t a setting from another of the author’s series, highest marks there. At the same time, world building is why I rated it 4.5 stars instead of 5. There were points I probably shouldn’t have read before the coffee kicked in. I got confused at times, but that’s really my only criticism.

The plot:

I love stories this length because they get to the meat and marrow of the characters without excess “fluff” or “body fat.” It was an exciting story that was recognizable to any mythology geek and yet original enough that I forgot it was a retelling. Two thumbs up here!

The characters:

The author’s touching portrayal of two very different, but equally heartfelt sibling relationships was incredibly well done. Pethra and Cedra and Halcion and Tanel were recognizable and unique at the same time—not an easy feat. Plus, we have sarcasm and banter that any person with siblings will recognize. The dialogue alone makes me want to read more of Ann’s work!

I’ll definitely be looking to more of Ann’s writing. Christian Fantasy Novellas are such a niche and it’s always great to find I’m in good company!

I just finished and I wish this was a longer book, or if we had a sequel that would be cool too. :D
This book was about sisters and brothers and ahh yesss! I liked the characters. I think the Shadowkeeper is a bean (aka, he must be protected). I was confused about some parts of the story (could be because I finished reading it very late in the night), but it was epic too. I got some loki and thor feels with the bros.
Anyways, I liked it. :)

Wow! Just wow! I was captured into the story by the first page! The dialogue between characters is so smooth, and I could actually imagine myself in the story observing it all. The ending was rather unexpected for me, yet still felt right. As a twin with a truly special bond with my sister, I totally related to the sisters in this story. Absolutely loved it!

Beautiful!!

I have no words to describe this story! The imagery, the characters, the world! It was so alive and so vivid I could not put it down! If you like fantasy at all, you must read this story. Right now. Don’t hesitate a moment, it’s more than worth it.
This will not be the last story I read by this author! She’s got me hooked for life!

Although short, with sibling dynamics and strong writing, Shadowkeeper is a great read. The way the rifts and starlight worked were really fascinating, as well as the concept of Death and the Shadowkeeper.

My rating’s now 5 stars instead of 4 because some of the bits I was confused by when I first read it have been changed.
