So apparently my mom was a witch. And not just a witch, but a witch who turned bad. My poor, sweet, normal dad wanted me to have a good college experience. Instead I get a magical offer I literally can’t refuse, from the world’s most elite school for warlocks.

WARLOCKS. As in GUY WITCHES.

Even though I definitely have lady parts, somehow I ended up at a warlock school to learn the gentlemanly arts (which are a lot more badass than, ahem, lady magic). Did I mention the witch world is stuck in the 19th century? Unmarried witches and warlocks barely see each other outside of society balls, which are still a thing.

No one knows how I ended up here. I’m thrown into a whole new world where I am outcast and friendless, except for:

—Firian, the enigmatic fox shifter who has been watching over me since I was born.
—Alec, my new roommate, a sexy-as-sin incubus enchanted not to lay a hand on me. For safety. Or cruel and unusual punishment.
—Montague, the black sheep of the school since he got turned into a vampire on spring break.
—Harris, an arrogant ass from the most elite of all magical families. Okay, he’s not my friend but he’s Montague’s. I’ll work on him.

My existence here breaks all the rules. Am I here for the right reasons? Or am I the pawn meant to destroy the very world I’m starting to love? When my magic proves stronger than anyone expects, and the school is attacked by a demon, I’ll need help from the four gorgeous magical men who are willing to break a few rules with me. They’re each forbidden to me in their own way, and the greatest danger of all might not be demons, but falling for them. All of them.

This is the first book in A Witch Among Warlocks, so expect cliffhangers. It’s a medium burn reverse harem story intended for 18+, which means, BE PATIENT LIDIYA, YOU’LL GET ‘EM THERE. And I will, dear readers, oh, I will.

Lidiya Foxglove grew up on a steady diet of fairy tales, folklore and fantasy and also reads way too much manga. Fantasy romance is her favorite thing in the world, but she likes it steamy. She also loves cats and tea--it's cliche for a reason!

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I was really excited for this book. I've read multiple of this author's books and most of those I really enjoyed. This sounded like it would be the start of another great reverse harem series. Unfortunately it just didn't work for me. It fell flat with not enough of the things I wanted to see and it didn't keep my attention. I kept hoping it would get better and grab me, but in the end it just didn't.

There were some good parts. I enjoyed the set-up with how Charlotte is a witch who under mysterious reasons get accepted into an all boy school. It was interesting to see how she found her place here and tried to make things work, but also had enough personality to stand up herself when she really wanted something. She was a likable enough character and the four boys who are her love interests all had their own personality and were easy to keep apart. Which was well done. Their relationship with Charlotte was also unique as I've grown to expect from this author's previous books. And at the end when the romance really starts forming we get to see a bit of how they all interact with each other too. I also liked that it was a bit of a slow build, but it still felt relatively quick somehow.

I think my main issue with the book was the pacing and the way things lacked depth/ impact. There are multiple important events and happening and it just felt like they got brushed over. Oh this happened and then the story just continued. I wanted to feel the impact of these events, how severe this was or how it impacted the characters. Instead the story just seemed to move on, important hints might come back and play a role later, but it didn't feel like enough for me.

Due to this the reveals and events lacked impact and the vibe of the book stayed so steady that eating dinner and summoning a demon felt like it had the same impact. Some events felt almost a bit rushed with the way the characters moved on again. It's not a short book, I think it's about 400 pages long, but at the same time it felt like there wasn't enough happening. There are things that happen ofcourse, but I think with the events lacking the impact I was looking for, it felt like nothing mattered as strongly. At times it felt like nothing big happens and when something big happens it lacked impact.

I also would've liked some mystery/ foreshadowing/ build-up throughout the book. There are some interesting things going on, with an important warlock dying, a teacher who might be hiding/ lying about something and Charlotte being accepted in this school under mysterious circumstances. But I felt like there was potential for more here, I didn't feel engaged or excited about it as there wasn't as much build-up and mystery surrounding it.

While I liked most of the main character well enough, I never felt invested enough that I really cared for them in the way I had hoped. Charlotte has a difficult time adjusting to life in this all boy school and she gets bullied a bit. Luckily she has some guys who stick by her. Montague is a friendly and charming vampire with a bit of a struggle adjusting to his vampire side. Then there is Firian, her familiar who has watched over her for long and is now coming out of the shadows to stand behind her. Harris, who is quite frankly a bit rude and arrogant, but there are hints there is something more to him. And Alex who is Charlotte's roommate, he's an incubus who needs to learn control. I liked how different they all were. There are even some chapters form the boys their point of views. I just wanted more to really feel invested and connected and that was lacking.

The romance is a bit of a medium build. Charlotte likes them all form the start, but it takes some time before she grows closer and only by the end of the book they even start dating for real. I liked that it took some time, but even then I wanted more scenes withe the guys and seeing her grow closer. I also didn't feel fully comfortable with the situation with Firian, he is her familiar and later we find out he can't go against her wishes, which just felt a wrong. It gives her power over him and he can't go against her even he doesn't believe in it because of their bond. And it also made the romance feel off to me, as he can't love her if she doens't love him and the way he got forced into the harem situation.

The way the harem aspect was build worked well enough. I liked that they communicated about it and agreed on this and how it all made sense to them. Not all of the boys are in the hare yet, which leaves room for expanding in future books. I just didn't like how Firian got added. It was clear he wasn't on board with it, but had to be because Charlotte was, which didn't work for me.

I am glad I read two of the Brides of the Sinistral realms books before this one as I have the feeling it all takes place in the same world and having read those books it gave me a better understanding of this world already. I think this really helped as I thought the world building in this book was lacking a bit. And having a bit of background knowledge helped me form a better picture of the world. I was interested to see the opposing point of view in these books as the Sinistrals are the bad guys here. I just wanted more about the magic and the world so it could feel more alive. And more magic! This book is all about people with magic and there was very little actual magic being done. The parts that dealt with magic were interesting, so I wanted more of that.

To summarize: I really wanted to like this book, but I didn't. The premise was good, the characters likable enough and the four boys are different enough. But it felt like event slacked the depth and impact I wanted. The pacing felt weird, with things being rushed over, but at the same time it felt slow with not as much happening. There are some big reveals and events which lacked impact for me. The boys were different enough that it was easy to remember who was who and I liked it was a bit of a slower build-up, although I still didn't fully feel the romances. It bothered me how Firian couldn't go against Charlotte's wishes as that felt wrong to me. I felt the world didn't come as alive as I had hoped and I wanted more magic. Luckily I had a bit of a feel for the world thanks to having read two of the Brides of the Sinistral realms books. Sadly this book just wasn't for me.

The heroine is boring and lame. There was barely anything interesting about her or the book itself!

2.5 - 3 stars: I was really looking forward to this one as it did offer spellbinding magical experiences in a world of warlocks and one particularly mysterious young lady. Entering an all male academy, when you have no idea what your power is, much less knowledge of the paranormal world and its complicated hierarchical structure seemed like quite the fascinating journey to me.
The concept of the FMC just having discovered her heritage alongside her connection to a very famous necromancer did pique my interest and I was genuinely looking forward to see how the story plays out. However, I did find the characters lacking depth, the inner thoughts of the heroine alongside the bickering between her and her potential love interests felt a bit juvenile to me. There were some scenes that just did not make much sense to me. As curious as I am to find some much needed answers, I think it would be for the best to stop with this first installment in the series.

Charlotte goes from gaming geek loner to witch extraordinaire after receiving her acceptance letter to an esteemed Hogwarts-style all boys warlock academy. Along the way she learns more about her heritage, her powers and meets the challenge of being a witch in an all-warlock school.

No direct spoilers in the content below, but some commentary on world building and relationships, most of which you could guess from the plot-line.

Ugh. I was soooooo excited for this book. I started reading it the moment I downloaded it. I wanted to love it, I was desperate to have it be everything I wanted it to be. I have a huge weakness for a single girl in an all guy setting. But this book unfortunately did not live up to my hopes and dreams. In fact, it shattered them and then set them on fire.

Before I get into world building and society issues, I want to start by sharing my complete disappointment in Charlotte's guys. Their characters were incredibly disappointing to me. They were very two dimensional, flat and stiff - and not stiff in a fun way.... *side smirk* Firian started out so well... for the first few pages of the book. He was her best online friend and they have gamed together and flirted lightly for years. To finally meet him, I had soooo many delicious expectations for how that would play out. But it was boring and distant and awkward. He was so dismissive of her and made himself out to be very non-human, which would be fine if that was how he was supposed to end up, but he really bugged me with his actions and how suddenly they changed. He went very suddenly from being her distant familiar to protective bodyguard to smitten and in love. But there was no delicacy with the transitions. It was very jarring and seemed insincere and unbelievable, which was a theme for all the relationships. Then there is Harris, Montague and Alec. Alec was the only interesting one of the whole lot now that Firian had lost his charm. Sooooo much potential with a incubus roommate. But it was so tame. And I don't mean tame as in it wasn't smutty enough, because I am a true lover of the super slow burn reverse harem. I love when it takes several books to even discover that there is more than just friendship, so I have no problem with a slow build. Alec was tame because he was kinda boring. He faded into the background and there wasn't much there. So much fun could've come from his character and the whole "can't touch her" thing. I think that's my whole review in a nutshell "so much potential, so much disappointment". He was the best of them all, though. Harris and Montague just annoy me. How Charlotte can bother to be attracted to these guys is beyond me. Boring, stuck up, chauvinistic, self-centered posers. Charlotte needs a new harem fast. I'll let her keep Alec though, maybe with a fresh perspective. Charlotte herself is okay, I guess. A little weak willed for me, but she did apply herself to learning and wanting to fulfill her potential which I can respect.

Then the world building. The warlock and witch society is portrayed by the author as a supremely stuck up society with old world rules of character, honor and propriety. However, the professors and headmaster are going around flipping people off and swearing at students. The students, themselves, are cruel and brash to the only female among them, calling her names like "slut" and groping her when they catch her alone. ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Does that sound anything like what the author described? Hell no! These "gentlemen" had no respect for women, had no class or propriety AT ALL. It was a COMPLETE dichotomy between behavior and description. I HATE that. If an author wants to write about a modern group of chauvinistic warlocks with an attitude problem, then be honest with that or else it simply seems like the author doesn't know how to write the characters she's describing.

Okay read

Loved the book cover and the storyline. What didn't work is the off putting and crude descriptions of sex. It was not steamy at all. The mc saying my loins a few times when she's a female just didn't sound right. The sex talk was weak. The story was too slow. No actions and the bullying drag too long. The h was really not that powerful or badass. Having a Fox as a familiar didn't work too. I mean a Fox is not too alphaish. Too cute and cuddly. The romance build up was slow and then all of a sudden it's a reverse harem. The familiar love relationship was a bit incenseous. I mean he was born from her magic and she ended up being in love with him or should I say herself? Didn't feel the romance and ended up not liking the mc. I think the book should have focus on the h learning to be powerful and less on the bullying. I ended up just flipping the pages. The multiple POV did not help the story to my opinion. Won't be reading the next book.

So great!!

I really enjoyed this book. The storyline and characters were interesting, true, but holy crackers I loved this authors writing! It was funny and snarky and had enough pop culture to make me instantly love it. The characters are developing in this slow burn RH. Will be interesting to see where it goes in the next book. Family issues, insecurities, white privilege, sexism, slut shaming, taboo relationships and other fun topics are tackled in this story. It was faced paced and fun. Will def be reading the next!!

An entertaining read....
The Fairer Hex is a slow burn, rh fantasy filled with college students from different magical backgrounds. (I just finished Wicked Gods which featured teen MCs in a RH...yuck)

This wasn't a totally kick butt action novel, but the action that did take place within the story was well written and entertaining. I did not absolutely love all the characters, but I like them enough to want to see how each character line plays out.

Book two is ready for download so let me get to what I love most....good reading!

I'm on the fence here. I'm thinking this book is really more of a 2.5 stars rounded up. There were a couple of things that really kept me from loving this book. First and foremost the plot just didn't make sense. Why in heck would anyone actually have let this happen. I think maybe the whole "girl ending up at the school for dudes" thing would have made much more sense if he had been pretending to be a dude the whole time? Instead these teachers are just like meh lets roll with it. It makes no sense the way everyone was both against a female being at the school but also all for it. Second the misogyny was so freaking real here, I'm pretty sure I rolled my eyes so many times I got a migraine. I realize it was done intentionally but I'm wondering if the author was rolling her eyes while writing it. Lastly relationship depth between the characters. Other than the panty melting incubus boy I really didn't feel any of the other characters had any "real" chemistry. They seemed kind of forced together and it just wasn't feeling real for me. Especially the whole relationship with the familiar, that relationship if any should have been the most real and it just wasn't for me. Lastly this really felt like a spin off series. Too little to late since I've already finished it but I'm pretty sure it is. I have seen author's place notes at the beginning of chapter one letting readers know whether something is a sequel or a spin off... I wish all authors did that lol.

Charlotte our FMC, is going about her normal human everyday life when she gets an acceptance letter from an exclusive Warlock school and her father has to reveal the supernatural world. Not only is she decedent from a witch but her online BFF apparently lives next door and is a fox shifter, and her familiar. Unfortunately for Charlotte she is a girl so this Warlock invite must be mistaken.. yea its a mistake. Who cares you have to stay at the school anyways until we find out what is going on... (mmmk) Now Charlotte is belittled, downright bullied by both teachers and students, and made to feel entirely inadequate and unworthy all so the grownups can figure out what is going on and it has something to do with family Charlotte has never met or known. It seems her only friends however reluctant they may be is her familiar, her roommate, and his other 2 friends all of which have volunteered to champion Charlotte, at least some what. All the grown ups seem to be hiding things, wolves are popping up and attacking students, and instead of summoning a demon her dear old evil mom picks up. Shaping up to be a bad year for Charlotte it seems.

All in all the book was just entertaining enough for me to maybe pick up the next.. if I can't find anything else. There was just a lot of nonsensical stuff happening here.. Leaving this at a maybe.

After chapter 1, I decided I don’t really care if I like the actual story or not because I had already laughed out loud more than once. The conversations with her father and her entire introduction to magic was hilarious.. the fox in the yard, the “I’m not the police” and the casual “he lives in the backyard” had me rolling.

By the time she got to the school there was no going back for me. When she insulted homeboys cape and actually hurt his feelings, a permanent soft spot formed in my heart for him.

The school is so ridiculous and her attitude about it all is so.. on point.

So now, after finishing the last chapter I can say that the story did flag a bit, as well as the humor but both were still present enough to keep me engaged. (Still giving it 5 stars though)

The moral quandary that is familiar-witch relationships is a fascinating and interesting one BUT moral aside, I have a feeling the reason they are banned is a lot more to do with power and control than actual morality.

The only other woman in the book, Daisy, I enjoyed. She wasn’t what I’d expected from this genre where all the other women are jealous ‘whores’. She was blunt about who she was, her intentions and was self-aware of her place in life. A+

I will be reading the next. I also found there are other books in this world and am curious if it’s her grandmothers story 🤔 time to check!

I really enjoyed this start of a new series. Charlotte finds out suddenly she is a witch and she is being sent to a school where she is the only one and surrounded by warlocks. Several of those warlocks are drawn to her but have their own personal reasons for resisting.

Charlotte is a fun character. I really enjoyed reading her experiences at the school and seeing her adapt to her new environment. She finds herself attracted to her half succubus roomate, his half vampire friend, and his rich friend from an old rich magical family. I am really looking forward to seeing where it goes next.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

Na. Paranormal. Mystery/Suspense. Rh. 4 guys. Multi POV Magical Academy setting. They do NOT have a insta bond. I would love to hit a few in the head with a shoe. Charlotte finds out she's half witch and has been excepted to a prestigious all boys school for warlocks. A incubus that's spelled not to touch her, a newbie vampire that has flash back memories of his lord, a not so new fox familiar, and a miserable warlock prince. Sounds fun right?

Good story, meh characters

I've read and enjoyed other Lidiya Foxglove books and I was super eager to read The Fairer Hex. The blurb sounded amazing, and while the storyline was as interesting as the blurb promised, the characters fell flat for me. They are supposed to be in college, but their tone and just how they came across was too immature sounding for me. The story is still good, though, and I know these characters will appeal to other readers, so I still recommend readers who like fantasy, magic, and characters dealing with major mommy issues give this book a try.

I cant remember the last time I laughed this much reading. This book is ridiculous in the best possible way.

I love Charlotte and her interactions with everyone. Shes such a strong and interesting character. If i was faced with situations she got herself into i would’ve bailed long ago.

The boys are all so different and a breath of fresh air. Firian with his protectiveness, my heart was breaking for him at some points. And H.A.M is always good to add to a sandwich 😁 I love how their relationship started off slowly and naturally. This is why i love slowburns

The majority of the book is Charlotte trying to control her powers but towards the end theres a little more plot and what direction the next book will take.

I really loved the writing, its light and funny without trying to hard, just perfect for me

The author is new to me but i’m defo going to be looking into more books because damn.

So May can come along now so i can get my hands on book 2.

I didn’t finish it yet. I couldn’t. It was so so bad.
I would Not recommend this book for preteens or teens.
I love the premise and idea behind it. A girl going to kick butt at an all guys school.
But it became too much like porn for me and that’s not why I want to read.
According to kindle I only got 9% of the way through.

This isn’t labeled as a YA novel, but it’s written like one. The concept was okay, but there wasn’t enough detail about anything. There’s little-to-no information about what the school looks like, where it is, or general world-building. Why are vamps treated like second class citizens, why are succubi expected to fight their natures, why is sharing memories with your vamp sire so bad? Why is there so much misogyny that everyone’s okay with? Why was the “best option” to send the fem MC home at the end (with no explanation as to why home is suddenly safe, especially when she no longer has magic to protect her)? There’s a lot of “this is how it is” but the fem MC never asks why and no one ever explains it to her. Honestly, I know more about the video game she’s always playing than I do about her world.

There’s a lot of focus on the forming male harem but no one says why they’re so attracted to the fem MC, which is pretty common in “reverse harem” type books. I also didn’t get why the Lock brothers (I listened to the audiobook so I’m guessing on the spelling) were so determined to get after the fem MC. That kind of a grudge seemed like more than a “you don’t belong here”. The rest of the guys at the school were all pretty faceless, I found it odd that the only guys who were nice to her were the 3 male MCs and her familiar.

For a magic school, the students don’t do much magic wielding, especially against each other. What’s to stop them from setting each other’s homework on fire etc? Doesn’t seem like there’s much oversight or punishment.

The relationships between characters (besides the one she had with her familiar) also felt pretty tenuous because we were told the male MCs were friends but I didn’t really feel the closeness. As it was, the female MC also didn’t say why she was attracted to all of the guys (except the succubi which was obvious, but begs the question is she really attracted to him for himself or is it just his nature she likes?) so she came off as Catherine-esque from Wuthering Heights, having her cake and eating it too but not really committing to anything until the guys approached her.

None of the characters really had a personality except the male MC who challenged her to summon a demon, and he only had two modes: arrogant and protective.

Conversation topics felt like they were stretched across multiple chapters of the book instead of being addressed in one conversation and wrapped up so it felt like the characters weren’t really discussing anything important most of the time.

The head master was dangerously negligent and it’s wild there’s no repercussions for him and his part in putting the fem MC’s safety at risk.

I don’t get the fem MC’s sudden obsession with “saving” her mom. She felt pretty indifferent about her mom previously, what makes her think she can or wants to be saved? Or that the cost of saving her isn’t too high like the Headmaster said.

Why wouldn’t the professors teach the fem MC to use her magic if she’s so dangerous? An untrained witch can be more harmful than a trained one. Or they could have brought in a witch professor from another school and has her privately tutor the fem MC.

There were a lot of ideas, but the book as it was very thin on everything, conversation that pushed the plot forward, details about setting, building connection between characters, sharing character motivations. This audiobook is a little over 9 hours long and I feel like I don’t know much more than can fit in a 40 page novella. Maybe the intention was to spread everything out across the series, but I don’t think the first book provides a firm enough foundation for the rest of the series.

I had accidentally read the first book to the spin off series for this main series, A Witch Among Warlocks, and was super drawn into it. When I found out this main series existed, I had to see what it was all about. Here, we get to read about Helena’s brother’s story with Charlotte and her other hotties.

Charlotte didn’t know magic existed or that she was a witch. It’s thrust upon her rather unexpected and she’s forced to attend a magical school for warlocks. That’s right. It’s an all boys college. With her new found familiar, Firian, at her side, Charlotte has to embrace this new change to get the answers she desires about her mysterious admittance and her mother. Along the way, we meet her harem members. Her new roommate Alec, an incubus who doesn’t want to delve deeper into his sexual nature. Montague, a freshly made vampire and seemingly only outwardly kind person to Charlotte at the beginning. And lastly, Harris. Harris is the rich and arrogant asshole who can’t seem to stop butting heads with Charlotte.

I liked our feminist FMC in our chauvinistic world of warlocks. She knew just how backwards their thinking was on the divisive roles of men and women in magic society and stood firm in her beliefs, never backing down when challenged. Charlotte was a very open character and had good communication with her guys, which I was so happy about because I hate misunderstandings that could have been prevented if someone had just talked. The guys were unique enough characters that I was drawn into their stories. The dilemma between Firian and Charlotte, with him only being able to follow her wishes even if he opposed them (broke my heart honestly, sweet boi), Alec not trusting himself with his incubus powers, Montague trying to repress his sire’s memories and distinguishing them from his own, and lastly Harris’ internal struggle of fulfilling his life plan or following his instincts.

The plot was good enough, it felt a bit rough in places but overall had a good flow. I’m curious to see what the rest of the series is like, so I’ll venture onward into the next books. Although, I really am just so drawn into Demons in the Bedroom that his seems more like me trying to get the background information before getting to the real story.

**Cliffhanger Warning! ** I had fun with most of this book. This is a fast paced, fantasy, New Adult, college, slow-burn, high drama, reverse harem romance. It has plenty of suspense, a couple of steamy dream sequences, laugh-out-loud moments, and an interesting cast of characters. There's lots of magic (the main characters are witches/warlocks), it takes place in a private, all-male college, and it has a hilarious female main character.

There are some bullies, and some of the guys in the "harem" start out as kinda bully-ish. I don't usually read "bully romance" because real bullies are not attractive to me. (And it's one reason why I'm not giving this a 5-star rating. It's non-sensical that a female lead who's been bullied in the past could be attracted to a bully now.)

I think Charlotte, Finian, and Charlotte's father are what kept me reading. Charlotte seems like a real 18/19 yr old, because of her uncertainty in who she is (I.e. going from clueless to badass and back again). Finian isn't a fully 3D character, but as a "familiar" he would be limited in his personality... I would totally read a prequel/sequel about Charlotte's father. He didn't get a lot of scenes, but I still wanted to hug him.

In general, this story is predictable. I felt invested in "Dad" and wanted him to get his daughter and/or wife back. I wanted Charlotte to turn all the sexist warlocks on their heads. I felt a bit let down by the lack of scenes where she could make the piggy warlocks rethink their misogyny.

Maybe in the next book? I have to applaud the lack of overbearing feminism. It never felt like a soap box rant.

I'm guessing that the romance will be kicked up a notch in part two of Charlotte's journey, but I'm not holding my breath. If nothing else, I want to see some chauvinists get their butts handed to them by "a girl."

Several typos, but nothing too distracting.

The Fairer Hex

This book was a dichotomy. It had an intriguing plot, good characters, but the execution isn't there. It's a slow burn paranormal RH, so multiple partners, but is firmly YA. Writing seems very juvenile a lot. She is boy crazy in the beginning, though as the story progresses the writing gets better. The relationship with the guys us Tue slowest instalove I have ever read. All of these guys are all about her, but there is zero chemistry, zero build up, zero circumstances or conversations here they might fall for one another. I mean, the criteria is VERY low at this point for her to want to date you advice versa. All this seems bad, but the storyline remain a interesting throughout. The situations she gets herself in are fun to read. I'm really hoping book two is much better or I may not be able to finish series. This will need to be read on order.
The h is raised as human, because her powers were blocked as a child. Her familiar, a fox/man named Farian, has watched over her from afar. Her dad is a fantastic human, loved him. She meets Montague a warlock/vampire who was turned over spring break and is now shunned by a lot of families, Alex a warlock/incubis who turns put to be a roommate and spelled to not be able to touch her and Harris, the rich elitist Warnock with all the family pressure to marry well and flash in line with his mother's demands. When Charlotte is admitted to Merlin school, an all boys school seemingly in error, she is shunned, ridiculed and made an outcast. Farian is extremely protective of her, even though technically he isn't even supposed to stay with her anymore. Since she is new to magic and very powerful, he is allowed to stay. It's been an adventure so far. Fingers crossed book two is more like the ending of book one. So far the RH portion hasn't really taken off and is just awkward.
