Have you ever gone days with no water? Weeks? Have you ever spent the night with a dead man?A heinous nightmare. Frank bolts up in bed. Except he’s not in bed. His head slams into what feels like ten-million tons of solid rock. He rolls right, then left, only to be foiled by more rock. Like a stone coffin. What is this place? How did he get here? Maybe the dream was real, and this is the nightmare. His heart slams with panic as he stares into the darkness....the plot twists were so frequent, and so dramatic...Something has happened. Something terrifying. But the harder he strains to recall the event, the deeper it retreats into the labyrinth of his mind....an excellent psychological thriller...A stalker in his dreams. Horror when he wakes. A passage. A password. A vanishing snake. What does any of it mean, if anything?...one of the best horror stories I have read in a long time.No light. No water, no memory. And he's out of time. He must remember. If he wants to live. His amnesia is fading, but so is his hope. And perhaps his sanity.

This was a book selected for its cover. Somehow I was in a mood to find a random short scary kindle freebie and this jumped out, for obvious reasons. It stands to mention, you get less of a story than you think, page count says 99, good novella length, but 50% of it is a preview, so you really just get a novelette and an offer for another freebie. The story was actually surprisingly (from an unknown) decent, the narration style took a minute to get used to, but it essentially read like a recurring nightmare. There was an actual story, mind you, a good creepy story about two brothers and their own very claustrophobic nightmare they find themselves in. So basically a dark psychological thriller told in a conceptually intriguing serpentine way. I found it to be entertaining and it took maybe 25 minutes and was free, so yeah, worth it. The best and funniest thing about it was…I mistakenly originally downloaded it onto the wrong device, which resulted in a freaked out fiancé, reaching for a Fire at 4am during a bout of insomnia and seeing that peering back. Yeah, fun story, awesomely creepy cover.

It's just confusing and awkward

I had no idea what was going on and by the time I seemed to grasp it the "book" was over. It reads like a long poem with unnecessary visuals and descriptions that leave you scratching your head. Immensely boring and not worth the time. It has no story to get lost in. Your just left lost.

Frank wakes up but he's not in bed. Where is he? He's not sure. He can barely move, feeling rock everywhere. Is he in a coffin? Is this a nightmare?

A very short, fast paced read with some really great twists. For such a quick read it really delivered on making me feel confused, claustrophobic, and full of dread. Very appropriately titled.

A great little short story. Brings back some old memories as a young boy entering some unknown caves and making those choices to continue any further down certain tunnels (not knowing where they might lead) or turning back; to have future adventures another day. Thank goodness my gut instincts paid off and the right decisions were made on those fun filled, yet unpredictable days. Recommended reading for all readers. Looking forward to another Jeff Wade venture soon.

This is the first work by Jeff Wade that I have read and I know I will be seeking out more of his books. This novella is beautifully written and was engaging from the very beginning. I couldn’t read it fast enough and enjoyed every second!!

Well-written, but goes nowhere. Just a series of random events, not apparently amounting to anything. Because the writing is solid, I held on, hoping for things to come together and make sense. They never did. Not recommended.

Huh? I feel like I picked up a book, opened it and just read the last 100 pages. What it happening here? It’s ramblings of thoughts with no plot and no story. I’m glad it was free.

Unique perspectives

Dread by author Jeff Wade is a stream of consciousness book which takes us into the mindset of main character Frank as he desperately recognizes his demise. The author's writing style is extraordinarily descriptive; his flowing sentences are loaded with feelings, comparisons, and connections.

It was really interesting how Wade waits until the middle of the story to reveal some reality to the reader. The first part of the story reads like a hallucination, and although well written, felt like a bunch of disconnected thoughts from a character we don't know. He describes a boy with a toy monkey, hovering over his wife and child, finding dead bodies and body parts. It was really unique that Wade then explains the circumstances of the character. At that point, the reader can return to the beginning to make some sense of the main character Frank's ramblings. Hidden within his in and out thoughts, we learn a bit about who he is, who he is with, and most importantly, why he is trapped and facing death. This is still intertwined with Frank's inner thoughts, which at the point of the story, are tainted by thirst and hunger, isolation, entrapment, and certain death.

The only regret is that the story does not seem to end--perhaps this is purposeful, as Frank's circumstances for survival are not hopeful. This was a rather quick read, but definitely had entertainment value, and was so thoughtful, that a second and third read would not only be helpful, but also bring new understanding of the complicated story.

The second story included was called Finding Nowhere. It was also a brief snippet of a larger story. At the beginning, once again, author Wade offered a description of confusing and somewhat rambling thoughts from a main character later called Machine Man. He is stroking ponytails, and is obviously a mentally ill character. Also similar to Dread, the later part of the story offers some sense and circumstances, introducing the setting--a small town, additional characters, including the girl who he eventually kidnaps, and the potential "hero" Devin. As I mentioned, this is a smaller part of a larger story, as there is no ending--only Machine Man driving away, with hero Devin shot and following.

Wade continues to entertain with his very descriptive writing style, and his ability to tell a story from his characters' unique perspectives, especially using characters who are not in their right mind!

I would recommend both stories.

Don't miss this classical horror story!

I really enjoyed this book because the plot twists were so frequent, and so dramatic, that I just kept wanting to know more. Honestly, I'm not much of a horror fan, but this was so well written that I read it all in one go.

'Dread' opens with a scene apparently underground, Frank (the main character), attempting desperately to figure out whether he's dreaming of remembering a real event. Why does he keep hearing himself ( or is it his brother Patrick?) repeating over and over, "person's pieces"?

The characters are not just believable, they're likable and engaging, as well as recognizable. We've all met guys just like Frank and Patrick. They're regular guys, maybe a little out of the ordinary not really that.much alike, but as close as brothers ought to be. Guys who have struggled with life and are still working through it with each other's help.
The scenes are so detailed that you feel like you're right there beside Frank, trying to make some sense of what's happening, of where he is. Why are they on a railroad track, and why is Frank looking at his detached fingers lying beside his face? Why are they scuba diving in the dark with no backup, and what is Patrick's car doing at the bottom of the lake with Patrick's body looking out the windshield at them both? Why are they climbing down into an unknown cave, knowing that it's a crazy thing to do under any circumstance?
And when you (and Frank) finally understand at the very end, what the hell is actually reality, and what's not, it just hammers home the whole awful truth of the situation.
Great short read, especially if you're into the whole horror genre.
The only drawback I can point out is that it is a short story, but that may be just what you're looking for!

A rollercoaster ride of horror and fear

Dread by Jeff Wade is a mind-boggling psychological thriller filled with plot twists in nearly every scene. It opens with a man questioning his sanity. He bolts awake wondering if he is dreaming or gradually recalling nightmarish events. He asks no one in particular, "Have you ever slept with a dead man?"

Four characters are introduced: Frank, his brother Patrick, their father and Frank's wife, Veronique. The closed-knit brothers are adventurers. Out of nowhere Patrick arrives with urgency suggesting that he and his brother go scuba diving on the eve of Frank's first wedding anniversary. Without question Frank joins him leaving a very displeased Veronique.

While underwater Patrick shows his brother a deathly unsettling sight. As he struggles through dark waters to escape what he sees he recalls an upsetting conversation with his father about his choice of career. His ever supportive brother leaves him with words of advice that haunt him to the end of the story.

As Frank bolts awake again he and his brother are exploring the woods when they come across a cave. When they enter the cave they never ponder what they might find. Here the story becomes increasingly surreal when they find a body of blue water filled with fish and odd looking creatures. Patrick takes a drink from the blue water leading to horrifying moments of fear. It is left up to the reader to decide if Frank is indeed dreaming or truly lived the events of the story.

With great attention to detail the author tells a very short yet gripping story. This is a great read for fans of psychological thrillers with a twist of horror.

Have you ever made a bad decision?

If so, then read the mysterious thriller entitled, "Dread" by Jeff Wade.

Frank considers his big brother, Patrick, his best friend. Patrick is a doctor just like his father, grandfather and uncle. In fact, Patrick is a trauma surgeon. Frank wants to be a musician and Patrick respects his brother's decision even though his father wants him to be a doctor. Patrick is a 6th-degree black belt and is also Frank's taekwondo instructor.

On Frank's first wedding anniversary to Veronique, Patrick suggests Frank come with him on a night dive after midnight. Patrick is excited to show Frank something mysterious he discovered on the bottom of Greer's Ferry Lake. They go scuba diving even though Veronique thinks they should not go.

Something bad happens. A rumble, then a crash of a boulder into the lake and then rockfall. After Patrick and Frank retreat into the tunnel, Patrick, gasps, screams and ends up dying. Frank speaks of having the bends, hitting his head, being surrounded by rock, seeing only darkness and being next to a dead body. Is that Patrick next to him?

Frank experiences mental anguish and delirium. He says, "It dawns on me that I must be in shock. Post-traumatic stress, perhaps. Certainly amnesia." How can he get out alive? He puts his head in his hands and says, "This was a bad decision. I will pay with my life." He tries to focus on his only means of escape, his Swiss Army knife.

Will Frank survive?

Adults only.

Dread is a short story that is written in first person and reads like a dark dream because time shifts frequently and reality is blurred.
The storyteller recalls a time when he no longer wanted to live and he placed himself on railroad tracks in order to be run over by the oncoming train. Suddenly, he is in total darkness. Is he in Hell?, he asks himself and then he is floating above street lights without a body and he sees a boy holding a stuffed monkey toy which gives him a very eerie feeling that something bad is about to occur.
There are moments when the storyteller, Frank, reflects on his past that does not seem dreamlike. For example, he had tried to study medicine like his Father and older brother, but his real passion was music, much to his Father's disappointment. His brother, Patrick, is supportive of Frank's career choice.
Frank looks up to his brother and even goes with him on a spontaneous scuba dive at night in a lake. Frank's wife, Veronique, does not want him to go on the night dive because it happens to be their Wedding Anniversary. The brothers go on the dive despite her disapproval and as they reach 100 feet deep, they discover something very strange.
Wade puts a lot of emotion into his writing. It is difficult to know what is actually happening or what Frank is imagining which adds to the mystery and a desire for the reader to see what unfolds next.

I give Dread by Jeff Wade, 5 stars.

Frank keeps waking up from crazy nightmares. Or are they memories? And where is he? He should be in bed, but he feels like he's entombed in stone. Follow along it slowly comes back to him. Or does it?

This is a horror/suspense short story that fits its title perfectly. You are kept on the edge of your seat, not really knowing just what is happening, but needing to find out more. At the same time, you're ready to hide under the covers, dreading what may come next. The short story creeped me out and I absolutely loved that. I have such a hard time finding horror that will do that to me. This is my first time reading this author and I am now hooked. The story is only about 50 pages, so you can't build too much of the character in that time, but the author has still given us a good idea at the kind of man he is. The author could have completely ignored that and made his main character flat, the story itself carries the book. He did not go that route however and makes a good book superb. This book will leave you questioning much, including your sanity, but that is the best part. Please give us more!

If you like a quick horror/suspense book that will get your pulse racing, this book is for you.

Well oh well… where shall I start with this. I suppose it's worth a mention that Jeff Wade was a completely new author to me when I stumbled upon this twisted psychothriller. I knew nothing about the writing that would be between the cover that so intently drew me into reading this. I didn’t read the blurb I just dove right in and was so stinking thrilled that I did!

Dread takes the reader and thrusts you into the creepy and devilish world of Frank. While reading I will admit I was quite confused at times. However, when the story came to the conclusion that everything fell into place and I could see this was all a part of the story, believing that Jeff Wade wrote this thriller in a completely fresh way that sent my brain into a frenzy whilst reading. A truly wonderful thing in the end.

There is another little snippet of a story included in this book. I will say it seems that it needs more, but again I am thinking this is all the way Jeff Wade spins his stories. I look forward to seeing what else will come from him, and if we will get more of the second story in the future. Definitely a five star read though, that I can’t wait to reread the next time I need a bit of thrill!

So this is my first read by this author and I'm just not sure LOL This book scared the tar out of me, I tried really hard to keep up with what was going on and what was real and what was a dream, and what was a flashback...I had to reread a couple times just to stay straight and I think I did.

This is labelled a thriller and it contained everything a thriller should in my opinion. The cover was enough to scare me but it was also enough to make me give this book a try. I do wish it had been a bit longer or even gave us an epilogue because I cant even use my imagination for where this would go next. Was any of it real? Did it all have some sort of deeper meaning and I'm just missing it? I have no clue but I will say that yes I will read more from this author, the writing was terrific and although I don't normally read these kinds of books it was kind of nice going outside the box.

Dread

5 out of 5 stars

The story Dread by Jeff Wade is a short horror book that is wonderful to read and has moments when I got chills. It is a story that hooked me in from the start and I read the entire book in one sitting. The author has written a story that is page-turning and had me wondering what will happen next. The main character is intriguing as he tries to figure what has happened to him. There is a struggle to recalls events. This story takes the term psychological thriller to a new level. There are moments that are emotional and moments that sent shivers up my spine. There are also intense moments. What happens to the main character in the story? Read this book to find out. This book is an example of wonderful writing and making the main character come alive. I would highly recommend reading this book.

Dread by Jeff Wade is a fantastic book that will have you utterly captivated right from page 1. This is the kind of book that will have your heart racing and have you feeling like you are right there next to the character.
I found it really intense reading this book because this author does such a good job at creating the image and the feelings the character must be going through. There were times when it honestly felt like I were the one there, trapped, trying to figure out how to escape. There were so many twist and turns as well that you always felt a little unsettled. You never knew what to expect which is part of what I liked about this book so much.
The writing style the author has adopted is perfect for this horror genre. This was a brilliant book. I just wish it could have been a bit longer – although the shortness of the story could be part of what added to the intensity!

Dread by Jeff Wade. This is a creepy, creepy story. Don't read it home alone or at night! This is the story of 2 brothers Frank & Patrick who go in a cave to explore. What happens in the cave is not clear but it seems as if Frank is stuck in there with dead bodies and body parts. He wakes up or so he thinks to hitting his head on rock, as he rolls to the side its also rock. He's in a rock casket!!! He keeps thinking this is a dream and then his mind starts playing tricks on him making him think it wasn't a dream. He has reoccurring memories but he can't piece them all together. This is a short scary story that I read in one sitting. Its a scary rollercoaster ride!

Woah! This short story packs a lot of fear, confusion, and just plain DREAD into it! As the first book I have read by Jeff Wade I was unsure what to expect. However with a title like Dread, and a cover that this book has I knew it wasn’t going to be my usual happy ending, love story! There were no rainbows and no unicorns in this story.

However there was a lot to think about in this story.

“There is no reply, as is God’s nature. He only sets the wheels in motion; how we choose to steer this runaway roller coaster is up to us…”

Wade seems to be a good writer. I would recommend this story and look forward to reading more from him.

Scary as all get out and disturbing to read. This guy Frank is wandering what the hell is happening too me and your wondering too what on earth is going on. except you soon realize what it going on and you wish you didn't understand what's going on because its creepy as hell. I was confused at first because its is a short story and I thought the free story at the end was part of the original but its not you have to download it. But its free so I figured it out. And by the way, Finding Nowhere which is the free book to download at the end, it's also a great book. Will definitely watch for more by this amazing author.

This cover is not for me. Not only does it not having anything to do with the story but its garish. In this book the lines are so blurred between sleeping and awake, that it was hard for me to tell whether it’s a dream or its actually happening, because of that the story is confusing. I had trouble following along in this book. The thoughts and actions in this book are kind of scattered. The book ended at the half way mark, with a cliffhanger. And that’s for a story that's more confusing than scary.

This short novella consists of two short stories. The first story is quite confusing and I didn’t know what was going on. The story ends and everything makes sense. It is quite gruesome and macabre. When I got to the end, I realized I loved the story. It was really well written.

The second story I feel should have been a full book. You get a glimpse into the mind of a psycho. The author gives enough info to have you care about the characters but then ends the story. It left me with so many questions. I would have liked to know what happened after.

5-Stars

Dread was gripping and somewhat terrifying read. The author immediately pulls you in with his fluid writing style. The story itself captures you and won’t let you go until the end. This book was a short read but I highly recommend it. I felt as if I were living out the main characters situation with every page. I was torn with the decisions to be made. The description of each setting was easy to visualize. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more from this Author.

I'm loking at some of these reviews and I'm slapping my forehead!!!. First, he offers them a FREE book... and a great little horror short story at that... and they complain it its TOO short. Then he gives provides for them a free exept for yet ANOTHER free book... and a link to download all of it FOR FREE... and they complain about that too because its an excrpt. Yes, Dread is a short story. And yes, theres a exept for another book that's maybe the same length as Dread. So what?!?! Just enjoy all your free stuff and hush about it!!!! Anyhow the story Dread is chilling. The author takes you into inside the narrators head wehre you don't understand what's happening. That's another thing. It's SUPPOSED to be confusing at first! By the end if you have half a brain you understood precisely whats happening and me myself I had serious night mares for at least a week after I finished with it. Trust me read this book if your a horror fan. And download the free ebook at the end... its just as good if not totally different in style and story.

It is a psychological thriller that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. The twists and turns the characters take you on will keep you turning pages. The story is well written as well as the characters are engaging and make the story feel real. When Frank finds himself trapped in a cave, he starts to lose his mind. Will he make it out safely or will fate have something else in store for him. Is it real or is it a nightmare that feels real? I highly recommend reading this book.

This is a short story about 2 brother's who go and explore and cave when as they are making their escape Patrick suddenly dies.

This leaves Frank stuck in the tiny tunnels unable to get passed Patrick's body. To deal with the situation Frank drifts off to a nightmare world and the story switches between his nightmares and the real situation.

I did enjoy the story but it was a bit confusing at the start trying to work out how to tell the difference between his nightmares and reality

Dread by Jeff Wade is a short psychological, horror story. This story starts with Frank wakes up and feels like he is in a coffin but what is really going on? Dread by Jeff Wade is a thriller/horror suspense short story. This story was horrific in its telling and my skin still crawls at times. The emotional elements of this story are off the chart and if it doesn't leave you wondering... well, you haven't read it thoroughly through. Jeff Wade is a scary writer and doesn't a chilling job of delivering something that hides in the recesses of the mind that many may wish to avoid.

First things first, this short story is only half as long as it appears. Half of the actual content is a preview of another work. I was a. It startled when the story ended quite a bit before I thought.

Other than that, it was a creepy little tale. I was a bit unsure of what was going on at first, which was part of the appeal. As the story unfolded, things became a lot more clear, but even more horrifying. I really enjoyed it.
